Gear across servers?

Recommended Posts

Hi, noob here asking a noob question. I just started playing DayZ and from what I understand your gear is supposed to carry over to any server you join, in most cases anyway. But I have noticed that while some new servers will spawn me in the same place I was in on a different server, with all my gear, other servers will spawn me on the coast with absolutely nothing. Are there server specific reasons for this that I'm not aware of or is it a glitch? I want to start playing with a friend but we're concerned that we'll sit down to enjoy a few hours of the game and have to go through all the looting again instead of being able to pick up where we left off. How can we determine what servers will support gear crossover and which ones won't?

Yeah some servers are Private servers and some are Public servers. Your gear will transfer across the public servers, but not the private ones. So if you join a public server and then log out and join another public server, you will have the same gear. If you then log out and join a private server your gear doesnt transfer across.

some servers are public hive

they transfer ur shit from public hive to public hive

some servers are private hive

ur shit stays on that server

some private hives run on a cluster

ur shit transfers between servers in that cluster using that particular hive but not beyond

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I use DayZ Commander to browse servers, how would I know which servers are public and private? I don't see anything in the browser list to help me determine that info. I joined a server earlier that didn't allow me to bring gear so I'm guessing then that it's private but there's nothing even in the server name/description that indicates that it is.

Well they have already answered you but basically anything that says Dayzmod.com in the server description will be public. Most private hives will say that in the title. I suggest sticking to private

You can filter unofficial/private servers in DayZCommander, they are also indicated by a cloud icon with an x in them. The vast majority of servers are running private hives now.

Will that be the same way in the Standalone do you think Smasht?

What is the advantage to playing a private server over public? Doesn't playing a single private server basically mean that you are locked into playing that server, since gear can't be carried over?

Well what I enjoy about private servers is that some kid can't load up or hack on a different server then join a totally new server and just look for a helicopter or veichle. I find that very very unfair. I also enjoy that private servers will sometimes change day cycles, veichle and weapons spawns and such. I also find that there a very very few hackers on private

Essentially admins have more control over private hives, since they have access to the hive (database)

- Can password/whitelist the server

- Can add/remove weapons, spawns, vehicles, add in additional items, new types of crash sites, items, buildings etc

- Can run additional maps

- Can run 24 hour daylight servers

- If a hacker nukes the server they can restore it to a previous point. (Many servers do 15 min backups)

- Can add additional anti-cheat features.

- Players can't ghost (Spot a player on top of a building, change servers, log back in behind that player and kill them)

Downside is all your progress is locked to that server,

- If the server is empty or decides to stop hosting you can't just join another and continue, you will have to start from scratch.

- Private admins don't need to follow the pubic server rules, while the majority of the time this isn't a problem, some will have abusive admins and your only recourse is to play elsewhere.

- Private servers vary significantly and are often entirely different experiences to vanilla/public servers, some might have new weapons, vehicles, buildings, some might not allow PvP, some might be 24 hour daylight, others might be exactly the same as vanilla servers. It all depends where you call home.
