Character Customization

Recommended Posts

Making a character customization feature could not only immerse the individual experience of the player but enhance some game mechanics as well. Players would be able to immediately recognize who's who and act accordingly. Say you run into a guy who was hostile towards you before and you recognize him by his clothing. Instead of risking your life trying to figure out whether he's friendly or not you can take revenge straight away. Moreover, players would be able to identify themselves as a part of an in-game community. If an infamous bandit clan posse with trademark characteristics approaches, you'll know to steer clear. The customization doesn't necessarily have to be as elaborate as to go into facial features, but enough to make the character distinguishable, a good example would be the one in Rainbow Six Vegas, for instance.

Suggestions:

1. Initial Customization

Some basic civilian clothing/accessories to choose from in a separate character creation screen before starting the game. This feature would make the players feel more attached to the character and in turn the game since it is his/her own creation. Each player is unique and they want their character to be equally unique. Players want to stand out from the crowd not to be fenced in to just a couple of templates.

2. Acquired Customization

More extensive customization options received/unlocked in-game. This could include more survivalist/military equipment (e.g. camouflage patterns) allowing players to identify more experienced characters. Some customization options could be unlocked by finding them in-game others through specific tasks, e.g. unlock a bandit outfit by murdering 'x' amount of players. It would also be great to be able to camouflage yourself by collecting foliage etc. from the wilderness.

You have a whole host of faces to choose from what more do you want? although a pink camo suit would be super

I like the idea. I mean, not the whole changing your actual characters body but finding clothes, and armour. better clothes make you more camoflauge and protect you from damage.:)

Problem with this lies largely in the way the arma2 engine handles clothing customization (it doesn't). So you have to have a separate player model for every conceivable permutation of options, which is quite a lot of different models to do even though the changes are 'minor'.

That said though, Arma3 seems to have a very robust clothing and gear customization system which means that this should be a very real possibility for the Arma3 version of DayZ. Would provide a lot of advantages of being able to at least recognize your friends from their gear and clothing, so I rate this one! It just might not be possible to implement practically until Arma3.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest just waiting for arma3 cause you will be able to swap your outfits there.
