viewrange clientside

Hi there

Everyone who comes from arma2 will know how awesome a viewrange above 2000m is. Its not comparable. Dayz looks like a world of fog. Fog here fog there. The limited viewsize (its actually just 1000m) makes sniping much harder. Its kind of unrealistic to never be able to watch further than 1000m. Sniping above 1000m is impossible too ofc.

Cmon rocket, give us the option to choose viewrange by ourself. Viewrange limited serverside is sooo... it would be ok if it would be 2000-3000m viewrange but 1000m is just not enough. 2500m wont need much more cpu power than it takes at the moment.

I'd have it still server side but increase the minimum draw distance to 1500m or 1600m seeing as they as50 zeroes to that.

although I do believe some servers have theirs turned up, I came across one server where let me see black mountain from berezino hospital roof and the lighthouse on skalisty from rog fort. I think it depends on if the server owner and your luck in finding one.

I would like to see something in the area of 2km view range, so players can get the most from their scoped weapons. But the option shouldn't be client side, unless the highest possible setting is default and you can choose to set it lower if your PC can't handle it (I have no idea how much effect it would have TBH)

Fog closer than this should be linked to the weather system. There shouldn't always be the same level of clarity, but this MUST be synchronised for everyone.

I would love to have a day or two where snipers are useless because if you can see another person, you're close enough to punch them in the face. :thumbsup:

It can never be clientside folks, the view distance determinate how far the server send you moving entities (players, zombies, etc...). The higher the view distance, the more network use.

Chabowski I like you idea but 2000m is not enough. 3000-4000m should be the max limit. There are not much pc's out there who can handle 4000m anyway so... :) I will post screen to show you why 3000-4000m is better.

thats just wrong. You can set your viewdistance in arma2 from 500m-4000m and it works without any issues. It doesnt affect network use. Arma2 netcode is bad in general but thats another topic. I guess you didnt play arma2

All kidding aside, there's enough snipers in game already. Making sniping easier will only make things worse.

Its not getting worse by making sniping easier. You didnt play arma2 too otherwise you would know thats its quite hard to hit targets at a range 1000m or even more. Hitting moving targets at 1000m or more is almost pure luck.

In multiplayer the view distance is enforced by the server because it's the server that decides how far away you can see entitied (players, vehicles, etc...)

Changing how far you can see client side doesn't change anything considering if the server say 300 meters, it won't send you entity movement data past 300 meters, making your sniper rifle useless.

There IS a real cost to an increased view distance:

  • The server cannot put far away entities to sleep/despawn ambient wildlife
  • The server has to generate ambient wildlife further away around the players.
  • The server has to send movement data for more entities around each player, that means more bandwidth use.

It's a balancing act between playability, server resources and bandwidth consumption.

And before you tell me that client side the view could be higher than the entity maximum sync distance:

Do you really want to see zombies and players magically appear at the 1000 meter mark? How annoying would it be to scan a town with your sniper rifle for 10 minutes, before realizing it's beyond the 1000 meter mark and you wouldn't see any entities there even if there was any?

So before telling people that they didn't play arma, you might want to check who you are talking to before making a fool of yourself.

I still think you didnt play arma2 multiplayer or you are just a retard.I am not speaking about the viewdistance in video options since this has effects singleplayer only (as far as I know). I have wf options on my favorite arma2 co server. There I can set viewdistance from 500-4000m. This means viewdistance is limited to 4000m serverside BUT we can set it clientside from 500-4000m. Thats just what chabowski suggested and it works flawlessly in arma2. So why not use it in dayz?

You care about playability, server resources and bandwidth? I dont know how much you are into the arma2 engine or how much developing experience you got but I wonder how arma2 co manages to make it work flawlessly.

At the moment zombies magical appear at a distance of 300m (or 400m). So what? Players magical appear at 1000m till i never can see above 1000m in dayz. I would be able to see them at a distance of 4000m if... so what is better?

I would be able to see players if there are in my viewrange and Im always aware that zombies spawn at a distance of approx 300m. Sorry im not stupid enough to make such mistakes.

Please stop it now. Its senseless to discuss with you
