Social Hydration

Recommended Posts

I had been thinking about how hydration works in this game and find it particularly easy to get enough soda so that you never need to drink and refill water.

I searched for similar topics and found this: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=8197

However, beyond the idea of having soda give you significantly less hydration, it should increase the rate you get thirsty for hours (Caffeine has a 5 hour half-life.) As a positive, soda should decrease the rate you get hungry for the same amount of time.

Beyond this change in the mechanic, I feel like drinks should spawn much less frequently giving everyone a reason to seek out wells or ponds to fill their jugs. As people have stated in other forums, ponds should also have a high rate of infection which would require antibiotics. A main reason for this is that smaller towns with wells would be desirable travel locations even if the looting is low. Supermarkets would spawn sodas but sooner or later consumable liquids would run out in the main cities.

I have never had an issue with thirst or hunger and I feel like I should. Make certain areas hot spots for food and drink. Supermarkets are good for everything, obviously, but make farms (animals) and water pumps important - something worth killing over.

personally ive used the water canteen alot (out in ze wilderness) and has been very useful, ive seen a post somewhere on people wanting the canteen to refill from rainwater which i think was good idea.

but yea makes sense you should have higher % chance of getting infected by drinking pond water :S

I actually agree that soda should relieve both hunger and thirst. Soda has an abundance of calories and does have water in it. As it stands, I actually have little use for soda. I carry three canteens and can go across the map and end up with three full canteens on the other side. If I find soda I chug it and move on.

But I understand why soda is there. It's one-time use hydration. If you don't have canteens you can walk past pumps and lakes all day and be screwed.

Also, why can't you drink from a pump or pond without a canteen?

I like the idea of rainwater refilling canteens, but it might be impossible from a game code perspective.

I'm glad that you have used the canteen a lot, I have too depending on the character, but I don't like how you dont HAVE to rely on your canteen. Soda and any other liquid consumable that is introduced should be a very temporary fix to your water needs. Running around all day hiding from zombies would require at least a gallon a day. Sodas are not going to do the job.

You should be able to drink directly from a pond or pump, definitely, but it is likely more difficult to implement than the actions already built into the game.

You should be screwed if you don't refill water when you get the chance, but I have never run into this situation because soda is so plentiful and so effective.

Nah. The body adapts to water availability. You still need to drink but to function you will get used to it, both from a biological perspective and a pain/discomfort perspective. You will be dehydrated, but you'll be fine. Drinking nothing but soda does tend to put the hurt on you. But my squad leader used to pop open a Mountain Dew whenever we got to our destination. I don't know if he ever drank water. I like to think that he gorged on water in the fetal position in his hooch when we got back from patrol, and drank the Mt.Dew on patrol to feel like a badass. That idea makes me smile.

I think that from a coding point of view, there was one suggestion where if it were raining, drainpipes on houses would act like water pumps. I don't know if it would be too difficult to make them act that way during a certain weather phase. I don't know anything about coding and other wizardry.

Some people are super-human. I have a friend that just drinks alcohol, never water and he is fine - I cannot in any way function like this.

When you said 'Nah.' what were you referring to exactly?

I like the idea of rain impacting where you can get water, and I'm sure the coding wouldn't be severe as the engine already knows when it is raining and checks it while calculating heat loss (heat drops faster when you are in the rain.)
