It's nearing the closing bell, my friends

All great journeys begin with a single step, and this has been one helluva journey.

DayZMod started as a backyard garage experiment by some unknown New Zealander, and from these simple roots the revolutionary new idea of zombie survival blossoms. I would like to start this farewell to DayZMod as we know it with a short history...

It started as a simple project, which I believe was released accidentally. At first glance, the idea of a brutal zombie survival mod seemed unorthodox and unlikely to succeed, but many people found it to be a relaxing change of pace. It slowly grew and grew, evolving and changing, until it booms forth with hundreds of thousands of gamers buying ArmA II for DayZ. It swiftly broke the one million mark, and then plateaued off approximately one month later. Public interest in the direction of the amazingly successful mod was huge, and finally, as all were hoping, the standalone was confirmed. Now we sit in the lull of development, playing the good old mod, listening carefully for all news of the SA.

I would like to share my story about how I came to play DayZ, and how I got drawn into this unique community.

Being an avid fan of RoosterTeeth, my brother showed me their video presenting the mod. I was somewhat interested, but he seemed really pumped. After we finally got ArmA II CO, we slugged through four hours of installation, and then my brother played it...for awhile...he got done, then I gave it a whirl. I got frustrated at first, but the I figured out the groove rather quickly, and looked up some maps to get a feel for the geography. Soon, I had memorized many strategies and items, and made my first trek to the NWA with two of my friends who I introduced the mod to. The suspense was amazing to me, as I struggled to protect my friends as we fought off player after player. I ultimately failed, but it was still amazing. My brother soon stopped playing it because he gets easily frustrated with games in general, so I got it all to myself, having a myriad number of amazing experiences, trying out the new maps, and having all sorts of adventures and misadventures. I came to the forums as many people did, angry about a feature, but then I started just browsing it, and began placing my input into the forums freely and with glee. I always thought of myself as a bridge between casual and hardcore, since I don't play that often, but sometimes I get into it.

No, I am not a hipster, and I did come out of the forum gates whining, and my experience was probably

Pretty standard among many, but I still find it exhilarating to be able to say, when people are playing this game two years from now, that I slugged through it, made my voice heard, and shaped DayZ as it will become.

I will take a short siesta from the forums, checking every now and again, still holding my ear to Rockets lips, but this is my goodbye to DayZ for a bit at least.

Maybe post your starting experiences too? I would like to see how the people with 2k+ posts got Into this great project :D

See Y'all on the Fields of Cherna'+!

In game name-Quab or LBX Quab

See me, give me a shout if you know me from this fine forum, and you will not leave my company hungry or without 12k blood. Especially true to the user L0Gin, who I would like to personally thank for giving me a gateway to jump into discussion. I would also like to tell Login. Hat his medical compilation thread was mentioned by Dean specifically, so you especially shaped this mod:be proud!!!!

See Y'all on the Fields of Cherna'+!

Quaby

(A goodbye to the forums without bitching? Does this even happen anymore?)

(Got all deep again, need to shower and purify myself, *sigh*)

No matter how deep you may think your post was, you're still playing a computer game.

I liked it , bit of an insight is always cool :) although i also liked Welchs follow up post, very dayz forumesque :D

Kepping in the spirit of the op.. i found out about the mod via another forum , an arma guy was posting some bits and pieces of info in May and i was semi sucked in when i saw firstly that it was based on arma but more so that it had a massive map. The zeds did not really interest me but a vid he posted did. Him and two of his buddies looting a shop and then running for ages trying to lose these zeds, picking off a few here and there and then losing first one then his other mate until he was alone, running , unable to bandage until he finally was also beaten down and eaten. They had killed heaps and fought until out of ammo, it was a very desperate looking few minutes of gaming action.

It was definitely not the standard looking fps type that i had grown bored with since years ago and i thought fuk..30 bucks ..why not. That was back when the zeds were impossible to lose and they would follow you for miles..and miles..and miles. Was brilliant getting a zed train on, which you do not see any more. You could basically move the Cherno zed pop to Elektro :)

First couple of gaming sessions felt very unique and it was a cool experience.

Cool post, hope you keep with DayZ. Also LOL@ Welch's comment.

I got into it through some guys off topic comment about it on a drawing site I use www.drawception.com I think he stopped playing shortly after he told me about it. I admit that I used a pirate copy as I was convinced I wouldn't like it since I've never really been that good at FPS/PVP type games and had virtually stopped gaming anyway, I had just grown tired of the same old crap games. Anyhoo I used that Tunnagle thingy and had to jump through all sorts of hoops just to get a few servers to show that wouldn't boot me out for having a dodgy key and stuff. When I finally played it actually didn't take me too long to work out the basics (I purposely didn't look for guides) and after just 5 minutes play (where I got battered by Zeds and fell off the Elektro docks) I knew I was hooked :) I bought Arma 2 OA legit shortly after.

In all seriousness, there are so many people that come on to these forums and tell everyone that they quit. It's really just pointless to have any sentimental feelings for someone that you'll never even see again. I also don't feel like typing 8 paragraphs explaining my DayZ life story, because I still actively play...

Wait so rocket is from New zealand?

and no one cares that you are quitting. You may think that you quitting is going to some how impact the game, but in reality.. you quit and someone replaces you. Welcome to life!

I did read his whole post, but I was sort of thinking the same thing when I got done. It was entertaining, but way too deep for talking about a game lol.

Actually, I only commented that because of his signature. I think there is no limit of depth, even if it is just a game. But anyway.
