These are called Private Hives and so your character only exists for that server. Some servers are all connected to the same "Private Hive" though.

For some good while now, Rocket(The main dev for DayZ) has allowed people to host servers with private hives, but it used to be so that every server was connected to the DayZ hive server.

So what is the difference?

A private hive has its own database. Everything that happens on that server is exclusive and specific to that server alone. For example, things like your character, gear, and position.

The DayZ hive in the other hand, keeps track of every server it's connected to. If you're playing on server A that is connected to DayZ hive, and log out to join server B, you will spawn where you were last time and have all the same gear as you did in the last server. But if you join private hive server C, you will start with a new character. And no matter what you do in that server, your DayZ hive or other private hive servers are unaffected.
