You know that the standalone will be released in the next month or 2 right?? Also I'd advise you to play on a private hive that has a whitelist (You can usually get whitelisted by emailing the admins) as they have less of a hacker problem :) Other than that good luck and enjoy it!

Standalone is this December I believe, not sure exactly when.

Anyways, when you're new the main keys to use are ctrl + esc to minimize the game and check the dayzdb loot map, when you spawn you wont have a map so it's a little cheat to help you, helped me tons :D

When you spawn make note of the middle location in the bottom right corner, it will come up with e.g. Chernarus - Kamenka - ............ , you'll usually spawn along the north shore or halfway up the east coast. Quickly look at your map and plan your route, use landmarks to guide you, you can click the loot dots on the dayzdb map to show the buildings that have loot in. When I first started i wanted to go into every building but you'll soon learn which ones contain loot and what kind.

My tip's to get you on your feet in the hell that is now Chernarus !

1. Trust no one. Don't, by any means, shoot on site unless they are a bandit (Bandit's have rag's covering their faces, not hard to differ from the standard). TRY to be friendly, but alway's have your weapon ready. And if they are up to suspcious activity, just tell them to back away slowly and go your seperate ways, if they continue, then, in my opinion, is the time to shoot them dead.

2. When you start, as CptMugwash stated, you need to look for the middle line of text that will pop up in the bottom right corner. Use >>This<< loot map to find out where you are, and as CptMugwash said, use it to plan routes, find the high loot buildings, etc. etc.

3. Especially while your new, it's a good idea to avoid the big cities, like Cherno. Im not saying don't go there, they have good loot area's that should be explored, but until you have a better understanding of the game, and have better equipment, it is best to avoid these, not because of Zombies, but because of Players. (P.S Refer to story at the bottom)

4. Always have room for food and water. Until you can find a water bottle, always try to stockpile at least 2 soda's and 2 can's of food. And don't eat/drink when the indicators start to turn (This is a mistake made by many new players, at least me :|) But rather when they start to get a dark orange/red. This will conserve food.

5. Contradicting #3, i highly reccomend you try and find a hospital, as this will provide you with very essential's that you will need more then you know. The 1 i use is on the outskirts of Cherno, in a small residential area by a helicopter. It's dangerous because alot of players might be in this area, but it's good because it's still on the outskirts, and you will run into less, if any players at this part.

6. As other's have said, it is best if you find someone to play with. Not only will it make the game MUCH more fun, but it will provide you with more secutirty. A lone survivor is less likely to f**k with 2 guys then 1.

I will add more tips to this later, but now i have to leave for work, also i will add that story :P Check back later today !

Yup. Install the alternate mods whilst you're at it, unless you have no intention of playing them.

Neither. Double click a server and it'll load up the game for you.

Know that you're buying the game Arma2 : combined operations and not DayZ(DayZ is the mod) .

Just saying cause speculations are that the standalone is coming out this or next month you'll be paying again for it.

Well thats nice to hear that a new player is joining the world of DayZ this is the personal rules i live by: Never shoot a person unless you know the person is hostile, always try to communicate with them and maybe team up did this 5 times the last week so it works well but got shot a few times cause of some bandits oh and heres a tutorial so you can get started

Zombies will be hassle till you learn their ways ;), You will die quick in big cities ;), Run game in windows mode and use http://dayzdb.com/map to help navigate from your starting point (your starting point will be displayed bottom right when you log in/spawn)

There isnt that much loot to be had in cherno or electro thats worth the risk tbh, Id run north a bit and either go to berezinho, polana and navigate the towns across the mid area of the map, dont go too far up north tho lol, but southern cities you will just get into a deathmatch scenario time after time :P

And also never listen too much to the players who say zombies are easy, and try claim they have never dies from zombies,.

we have all run into houses/buildings that we dint know had only 1 exit before we learnt the buildings :P

We have all broken our legs and been eaten by zombies lol :P

We have all been 1 shot knocked out by zombies :P

So whilst zombies arent difficult, they can be if you make a wrong turn or take them too likely ;)

My advice on your 1st login is to run to a town and run around with the zombies and learn to lose them with LOS and learn how fast they run and even let them kill you a few time so you learn their power lol

(play with them if you will lol)
