Returning to play and in the middle of the woods

Returned after a few months absence.

I'm now in the woods with a gun, flashlight and map but no compass.

How do I get out?

run in one direction , until shot.

run and try to find road or power line they lead to towns, if you find one that you dont know the name of log out then back in and look at the bottom right of the screen, then search for a dayz map on google to find your location

If you've got the ingame map, you can log into a regular difficulty server which shows your map location on it.

My suggestion for you is to look at the contour lines (elevation lines) on your map. Are you on an EXTREMELY steep hillside? If so, look for contour lines on the map that are extremely close together. If you don't believe that you are going to be able to do this then you might want to consider running straight or whatever until you find power lines. From there, just follow the power lines. They will lead you to the nearest town which you can then look for a sign just outside of the city that will give you the city/town's exact name.

When they happened with me, I just stood up, and put something heavy on my W key and watched TV while it ran through while checking, once I saw a building I returned to playing normally :)

set way points and use them to find your self or go to a regular server to mark your location.

clouds always travel from West to East. look at the direction they are travelling, if they go from left to right across your screen then you know your facing North. from there, run until you find a building. from there pick a point on the map where you think you might be, and choose another location to run to, run that way, if you find the area you planned, bingo you found bearing and location.
