The use of the GPS device

Recommended Posts

I have little Arma2 experience and, considering the general knowledge of its use I see little applications to the GPS device (RCTRL+M) in Dayz.

Most servers don't allow to set waypoints in the map so, the actual only use of the GPS is having a map and to know your exact location; considering that most players uses an external map and know their position (with some error of course) what's the use of the GPS?

You can know *exactly* where you are, plus you have an overlay map on your screen so you know exactly what's your path, as you said you only know your position with "some errors", but with the gps you know your position pin-point, in certain cases this means saves time to reach the point B from the point A. It's not an must have device (if you have a map) but it surely better than a map.

It's like saying what's the use of a Colt, if you already have a Makarov that is ok to kill anything with "some" bullets. :)

Allright, maybe it's me thinking in the wrong direction because of my daily use of the gps navigator while driving.

You are right, WalkerDown, the GPS device is pretty useful even if it appears as a dumbed down navigator.

I also noticed that the red circle in the middle is a compass, great!

If only it is possible to zoom out mhh.gif

Ye you can't zoom.. the level of zoom is controlled by your (moving) speed. If you drive a car, or even better, flying an helicopter, it show a larger portion of the map.

I am not yet sure if it is dependent on the server settings or the GPS since I have not tested it much yet, but when playing on beta servers with my GPS I can see myself on the in game map as a blue circle which updates constantly of course. If you get into vehicles the circle takes the shape of the vehicle.

Hopefully that is the GPS and not server settings. I will be doing testing with it tomorrow to be sure which it is.
