How to remove peripheral dots

Recommended Posts

This original post was to ask about peripheral dots in game and how to remove them as an administrator through the config files.

I then edited it because I was too impatient to wait for a reply.

I have now edited it again to reflect, somewhat, the original topic of this post to make it easier, for people who are also searching for the same answer, to find it.

Cheers.

If you're patient enough there's loads of people that will tell you how to remove peripheral vision dots from your server.

Well, given that I tend to search, and all threads on this topic provided no answers, I concluded that, in fact, no one does know how to do this.

But hey, lets see. If I wait long enough (what, 2-3 years?)

The thing is I've run loads of game servers before, plenty of which were also in alpha. The difference with these other servers was that people actually knew how to configure them without conjecture and speculation.

DayZ has a very long way to go, yes I understand that it's only 7 months old, but really, that should mean the info is still fresh at hand.

Cheers.

Well, I've played on plenty of servers with it disabled so it can't be that hard. Sometimes you need to wait more than 5 mins before getting pissed off that no one has answered.

You could just wait like any other player would and not rant to staff about how 'unprofessional' this site is. In truth, it's not even that. It doesn't have a strong dev community, but that isn't what it's for.

Plus, it can be changed by a server admin. Here's an example, quote from BL1P, as a result from a quick site search.

Now I'm not an expert but if you're a server admin you can change the setting on your server.

Thank you for your reply.

I too found this post, and as with all other information for running a DayZ server, it's all conjecture and heresay.

I tried those settings, with no luck. Seems to me that some of these setting have since become hardcoded into the server and are thus uneditable.

I didn't rant about this site being unprofessional (but am beginning to assume as much) rather at the lack of support ANYWHERE when it comes to running a DayZ server.

Some people have worked out how to change these hardcoded settings but are unwilling to share their information as they want to have the only servers that run properly.

As the topic I originally posted in was from 2 months ago, from someone else asking how to remove peripheral dots, and someone simply replied with THE EXACT SAME COPY AND PASTE AS YOU, I can safely assume that no one knows how to, and after 2 months still no one knows how to.

Why am I frustrated? Because I'm paying close to $100 per month for my server hosting and all accessories that go along with it just to find myself unable to change what should be a very simple setting.

Again, thanks for your copy and paste, much appreciated. As I said, however, I search before I ask questions so no amount of copying and pasting is going to show me anything I haven't already found by searching myself.

Cheers.

BTW Solitude, which of those settings would you assume changes peripheral dots? Your Copy and Paste is about as helpful as the original post where it came from.

Just so you know for next time, here's my config where I'll ACTUALLY comment the line that's supposed to disable peripheral dots:

Armor=1;

FriendlyTag=0;

EnemyTag=0;

HUD=1;

HUDPerm=0;

HUDWp=1;

HUDWpPerm=0;

PeripheralVisionAid=0; <----------------------- HERE IT IS!!!!!!! But having this setting doesn't change anything anymore.

WeaponCursor=1;

AutoAim=0;

AutoGuideAT=0;

3rdPersonView=1;

ClockIndicator=0;

Map=0;

Tracers=0;

AutoSpot=0;

UltraAI=0;

DeathMessages=1;

NetStats=1;

VonID=1;

Thanks again.

BTW, just to clarify, your not paying anyone here. All of us here keep this site running in our own time, for free. Perhaps you should contact the people you are paying the money to and air your grievances there.

I never once stated that I was paying anyone here. I was explaining that my frustration at not being able to configure the server due to lack of official documentation.

If people would stop copying and pasting irrelevant information, finding the correct info would be a lot easier.

And trust me, I have aired my grievances at my hosting provider, but they are in the same position as me, as there complete lack of official documentation for configuring this mod.

I'm sorry for coming across as though the dayzmod community owes me anything, of course they don't. When I talk about the DayZ community, I am not only talking about this site, I am talking about the entire community. As I have said earlier, I have run many many game servers, and thus far DayZ is the only one where nearly all the information contradicts itself. Too many people simply copying and pasting without actually knowing if what they're copying and pasting is correct. They just assume it is because it exists in a thread here. That said, it would be best for the community if people who don't really know what they are talking about stop offering their two bits. It only causes confusing and creates a big misinformation trail that people like myself have to sift through, trialing everything and breaking their server over and over because someone found something to copy and paste without even knowing if what they are posting is correct. I have seen great games fail because of the secret squirrel society that keeps information to themselves instead of sharing it with everyone. Sure, you have a great private server, but if this continues in 12 months people will be saying 'day... what?'.

I will keep searching and researching and perhaps I'll find the answer I need. I will also keep an eye on this thread but I am 99% sure that no one here will be able to answer my question properly except to pass the buck and blame something/someone else.

Fraggle, you and I have obviously got off on the wrong foot. I'm big enough to admit that I'm 50% responsible for that and I'm able to get over it and carry on. Maybe a setting in your forums to auto close threads that are 2 months old so as people like me don't waste their time posting in a topic that seems relevant only to have it closed without answer and a snide remark stating that I 'shouldn't have resurrected a dead thread'. Then be told that I should have asked my question ANYWHERE but in that thread. That wasn't helpful one bit. Of course though, I should have looked at the dates, and realised that the person asking the same question as me hadn't received a helpful answer in those two months, only copy and pasting of uncommented config information that seems to be irrelevant.

I hope you find the answer you want I really do. When you ask people for help on here you are asking someone for a favour. Nobody here needs to spend their own time helping you. If you read back through this thread, two of us have tried to help you so far and every one of your replies has come with a barbed comment. You simply won't find people wanting to help you with that attitude. And for what it's worth, whether intended or not, you are sounding a tad entitled.

@Caffeind

My server had this problem.

I checked this old Arma 2 page:

http://forums.bistud...p/t-132596.html

Then added

PeripheralVisionAid=0;

and the following parameter:

visionAid=0;

so the Server profile looks like this:

singleVoice=0;
gamma=1;
brightness=1;

shadowQuality=3;

Then I ran the server at highest difficulty Expert/Mercenary and the dots disappeared. Even though those parameters are in there now, I still had to run at highest diff in order to remeove the dots. Running at Recruit/Regular left them on screen. Didn't test Veteran though.

Test this and see if it works. Can you put a quick post in this thread to confirm if working or not?

Horde,

Thank you VERY VERY much for taking the time to properly address my question and offer an easy to understand response.

Unfortunately I have tried those settings on my server and run as Expert. Unfortunately the peripheral dots were still there although other features were not (waypoints for one).

It seems that perhaps my host is using a non standard DayZ set up and as such a lot of these configs are not working (I had to force Expert in the actual config text file as the TCAdmin only allowed the first three, something, something and veteran).

Thank you again. Also I would like to appologise again for seemingly blaming the dayzmod community when in reality I'm just an angry old man.

Peace out.

[EDIT]

Bear with me until my next server restart. I noticed that HUD=0; is different to what I had (HUD=1;) so I'll try that along with PeripheralVisionAid=0; and visionAid=0;

After I try it with HUD=0; I'll report back as to whether it was a success or not.

Thanks again.

It should be removed with the settings above veteran.

If it's not it might be bugged.

Also even though servers are set on difficulty, if you goto options - difficulty sometimes you can manually turn them off, but the problem with this is that not everyone will do that...

Could you post up the contents of the batch file you use to start the server if ok?

I'm not sure if this is what you're after. I don't actually know where the bat file is on my hosted server, but the command line is:

-mod=@DayZ;@BlissChernarus -ip=23.29.74.90 -port=12802 -profiles=Bliss -config=Bliss\server.cfg -cfg=Bliss\arma2.cfg -name=Bliss -netlog

If this isn't what you meant then let me know and I'll try and find the bat file (although it isn't in the root dir of my server, which is the highest level I have access to).

Thanks again for everyones help despite my horrendous attitude yesterday.

I've asked the admin of my home server for some advice but it's sods law that he seems to have taken a couple of days off. If he gets back to me in time I'll let you know what he says.

After trying restarting the server (in Veteran) with the following included in the config file:

HUD=0;
PeripheralVisionAid=0;
visionAid=0;

The peripheral dots were still there. I'm going to have to put it to a vote to the regular players as to whether I'll increase the difficulty settings. It probably wouldn't be a bad thing anyway.

Thanks again for all the help. If anyone does have any other suggestions I'd be happy to hear about them.

Where I play the servers actually got busier when they went hardcore! Not allowing 3rd person is too much for some but removing all of the other stuff makes it a much more enjoyable game. BTW I'm still waiting for my guy to get back to me, he's been away for a couple of day's but as soon as he's back I'll have an answer for you...

I think I have approached this the wrong way and have made it much more difficult than it needs to be.

Again, I'll be waiting for restart to try this, but here's what I intend to do:

Change to Expert. Change the Expert config to reflect what I want, eg 3rd-p on (I know I know, I want to go with first person, but the majority of regulars don't), waypoints on, peripherals off, and just work back from there. I'm pretty sure there are a lot more Expert servers with the Vet settings enabled than there are Vet servers with Expert settings.

I'll let you know how I go after that.

Cheers.

Have you searched for Arma2-Servers or only DayZ? My Google Fu found 2 things. Peripheral dots are turned off with difficulty "veteran" and there is a bug with changing the settings.

http://guides.gamepressure.com/dayz/guide.asp?ID=15601

https://dev-heaven.net/issues/6406

Arma2 is now 3 years old. There should be documentation provided by the creators. If not, they should get kicked in the butt.

Thanks for the links tommes, seems it is something of a mystery regarding some of the config settings.

I just tried a restart with the server set to Expert, with the following settings (for expert):

class Expert
{
class Flags
{
Armor=0;
FriendlyTag=0;
EnemyTag=0;
HUD=0;
HUDPerm=0;
HUDWp=1;
HUDWpPerm=1;
PeripheralVisionAid=0;
visionAid=0;
WeaponCursor=1;
AutoAim=0;
AutoGuideAT=0;
3rdPersonView=1;
ClockIndicator=0;
Map=0;
Tracers=0;
AutoSpot=0;
UltraAI=0;
DeathMessages=1;
NetStats=1;
VonID=1;
};
skillFriendly=0.94999999;
skillEnemy=0.94999999;
precisionFriendly=0.94999999;
precisionEnemy=0.94999999;
};

Unfortunately this hasn't removed peripheral dots. It has, however, removed the ability to add waypoints to the map.

I would have thought;

HUDWp=1;
HUDWpPerm=1;

Was the waypoint configuration. Would seem this is hardcoded to disabled for Expert.

I'm not really too sure where to go for now. So I'm very keen to hear back from some of the others waiting to hear back from their admins :)

Cheers.

We have also encountered this problem with the peripheral dots to show up on our private hive though its setting says its disabled; server runs on expert mode - did you find any solution to this@Caffeind?

Some Arma options are hard coded in the profiles. Merc for example, on a saintly build only allows the changing of a couple of things, waypoints, and 3rd person are not one of those things, I know that this is not the answer you are looking for, but it reflects the same for the difficulty Veteran as well. The white dots stay, but you can change 3rd person, and waypoints. I get so many complaints about the white dots, and I cannot do a thing about it. This is my second post on the second topic. I'm waiting on some replies from some hard hitters at Tunngle, I'll report if i hear anything.
