James Duke 28 Posted October 23, 2012 Hey so I'm getting the standalone and I have watched a lot of YouTube videos about the game, but what are some things a noob like my self and others should know before just jumping in there? Please try to stay on topic. person915 345 Posted October 23, 2012 You're getting the standalone? I don't believe the standalone is out yet, and there are absolutely no videos with standalone gameplay, I'm pretty sure. So I don't really get your details. Anyway, if you are waiting for the standalone that will be out at the end of the year, no one can really tell you because it will probably be pretty different than DayZ now in most regards. All we could be sure of is most likely that the controls will mostly do the same things. So sorry, but all "a noob like my self" should know is that the standalone isn't out yet, no one knows much about it, and that I hope it stays that way until it comes out so WarZ doesn't steal everything. Grundlenugget 0 Posted October 23, 2012 I'm gonna disagree with you about it being "different" overwatch22. I think hall will likely keep what works with his formula and just add some new features along with better hit detection, sounds, lighting...etc. I think it would be a bit crazy to think he revamped the whole game in a matter of months, not sure if you've ever been involved with trying to make a game, but it's really hard work, and nothing ever seems to work exactly as you intend the first time through.Anyway point being... Pvt. James, you can check through a good number of Dayz walkthroughs to see what it's like to play the current mod and that should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect when the standalone does release (probably close to christmas, if we are lucky). But here are my golden rules of Dayz:1)This is not a rambo game, no gun lets you mow down all enemies without having to worry about getting your own ass killed from stupidity. Think before you shoot.2) Don't attract attention, if it's zombies, or people, doesn't matter. Don't be too visable or too loud, it will result in either teeth or a bullet in your head.3) Other players are the biggest danger. Most people would rather put a shot in your skull than say hi, or you might get lucky and they say hi...then they put a bullet in your skull.4) At night light is bad, if there happen to be any other players around, I guarantee that they are looking for a flare of flashlight as something to shoot at in the night.5) There's safety in numbers, if you got friends or a clan to play with, they do a good job of covering your ass. Going solo can get you killed pretty easy, but it also reqires you to have friends you trust (one of my buddies likes to "desk pop" and that's not good).6) THIS GAME IS SLOW, it's not COD. It's more like a proof of concept for that late night drunk conversation- 'so if zombies took over the world... I would totally kick ass and not die'Good luck and see you when the standalone drops. Lets hope it's a stable build.

Right now, rocket has redone the inventory. This affects everything to do with it, including backpacks, guns, loot, gear, tools, toolbelt, thrown weapons, melee weapons, and not to mention everything else he will add so people spend initial money on the alpha. We know guns shooting and all will be mostly the same but polished, but that can't really be put into words except "get used to it". So looting, storing, and using items will be different. Heck, even the "f" key menu will be different because it shows ammo in your inventory, and it has to communicate with it, so since it's been redone, it'll be different. But yeah, night lights will be bad, zombies and players will kill you, it isn't like CoD... you got that part right. That won't change. Pvt. James Duke 28 Posted October 23, 2012 Like nugget said the gameplay aspects of it shouldn't change that much, aside from an ease of storage and accessing supplies. The YouTube videos were of the mod but for the reason of it shouldn't be that different.
Cappin Caveman 7 Posted October 24, 2012 Death comes to EVERYONE. Don't get too attached to your gear.
Spandex 5 Posted October 24, 2012 As far as I have seen thus far the rules are simple:Rule 1 - Do not get attached to your gear.Rule 2 - DO. NOT. Get attached to your gear.Rule 3 - Trust no one.Rule 3 can be flexible to make things more interesting IMO but rule 1 and 2 are concrete. Remember them always. filas02 37 Posted October 24, 2012 Honestly, when I play I never get the time to trust or not trust anyone. I walked into the NW airfield (stupid me) saw a few zombies running in a direction, I followed them (stupid me) went into the wood at one of the barracks (stupid me). Saw a Bandit, said "friendly" (stupid me) He shot me on sight (stupid me).He never said anything therefor there were no trust. I'm not whining, it's just. If you wanna survive for as LONG as possible, get water, food and morphine. Move north and stay there. There is no reason to go for weapons if you hope to survive for more than a few days. Odin. 34 Posted October 25, 2012 As far as I have seen thus far the rules are simple:Rule 1 - Do not get attached to your gear.Rule 2 - DO. NOT. Get attached to your gear.Rule 3 - Trust no one.Rule 3 can be flexible to make things more interesting IMO but rule 1 and 2 are concrete. Remember them always.Rule 3 is NEVER flexible, sure play with people you have met in the game, but always keep an eye on anyone you are with in case they switch to psycho. Also an addition to that rule never approach anyone you see and say "friendly" until you are sure you can take them down if they aren't friendly.
Spandex 5 Posted October 25, 2012 I was thinking mainly of perhaps entertaining the idea of not executing any stranger you meet the instant you see them. Makes the game more interesting. Of course just trusting them with your life and gear the instant you meet them is not a good idea.

Thomasmoore 3 Posted October 25, 2012 What are the basic know hows of this game? I want to try to play this game and it would be great if you’ll help me. Plus, is it that scary? If I have a heart problem, is this game still recommended for me?
joebob 117 Posted October 25, 2012 Thomas the game can be pretty frustrating if you're not familiar with ARMA2 ... and even if you are there are some goofy things with the mod that can take some time to get used to. We provide free one on one training that will help you get over the "hump" of Day Z, if you're interested just click on the link in my sig and fill out a request form and we'll give you a hand. And no, I'm an older gentleman and my heart stood the strain ... mind you those damned zombies hooting and hollering all around you as you crawled through a town at night FREAKED ME OUT ... for a while, until I learned more about them. <_<
OrLoK 16185 Posted October 25, 2012 hello thereThe major issue with any iterations of this game from OFP to ToH to DAYZ is the "individual" control system. If I was you I would download Arma2Free and see if you can cope with it's peculiarities.RgdsLoK
JamesButlin 108 Posted October 25, 2012 (edited) Use DayZ commander my friend, will save you a bunch of time and effort with game updates and gives you the opportunity to try private hive servers with new maps :) might help you get used to the inventory mate :) Edited October 25, 2012 by JamesButlin

mzltv 2281 Posted October 26, 2012 Sorry I do not know why it duplicates my posts maybe something with my I pad. It's not duplicated the post because you've not edited anything? It'd say otherwise.. :blink:The biggest thing to overcome will be just the way ArmA2 is made in terms of the way you control the player - I think it's pretty different in comparison to any other game I've played (bar OFP).I think once you've got that down, you're sorted. Just gotta learn how to read the DayZ UI and learn how to play the game after that, really..
duke0095 106 Posted October 26, 2012 (edited) You should have a good PC, because the requirements here aren't similiar to today games e.g. cod or bf. It's an big open world with moving things, like trees and grass in the wind, animals, clouds and other stuff, which your PC needs to calculate.
