Map Tools, V3, and Standalone Maps

Recommended Posts

So, as far as the map creation tools for Arma 2 go (visitor 3, wrptool, wilbur, etc), they're terrible. Buggy, difficult to use, and an extreme lack of information on how to use them or fix problems with them. I've tried searching, and found nothing so far (most search results don't show up anything, even stuff related to visitor 3), but are there any alternatives to Visitor 3 or Wrptool for creating Arma 2 maps that could be used in DayZ?

I very much would like to create a new DayZ map. I'm in school for game design and I think it'd be great practice creating a multiplayer map for a game such as this (current experience only includes single player worlds). However, with Visitor 3 as it is, it's just not worth the time, effort, and frustration creating a new map from scratch. If there are not any alternatives, here's a question for Rocket (or any other devs for that matter): Is there going to be better tools for the standalone, maybe using whatever new editor comes with Arma 3, or one completely made for DayZ?

Thanks in advance for any answers. ;)

Most map making tools are generally painful and a time consuming thing to learn ..not all, but most. Thats why there is not a shitload of maps ..and the ones that have been done are generally of good quality. Time and patience is your friend my man :)

I come from the early days of Duke Nukem 3D, Doom and Quake user maps...and most of them were exactly this ^^^

True, but when I already have some other projects to work on, I have to balance out the pain vs. reward, and starting a map from scratch appears to be very, very painful. I think I might just create a DayZ map using a current existing Arma 2 map if possible and just make slight modifications and additions. I still hope the standalone might have better/new tools available, though. x.x'

I found tons of resources on the BI forums and wiki when I first looked into it. Quite a few people contributed tutorials and walkthroughs and even suggested alternative programs for the initial design of custom maps. Keep looking? Read through some threads? Run various searches?
