Is KOS really that big of a problem?

One kind of solution for this KoS and Alt F4 thing going on has been talked over suggestions. Simple as it is just add timers to server rejoin (no more ghosting) and for log out. So if you'd have to wait 30 mins before you'r able to rejoin a server and say like 30 sec timer while you log out (you can of course cancel this instantly and return) one would have to play trough their actions. In this light I think that people would have to think more carefully when to shoot since there is no easy way out of it. What do you think? -

Like no hacking/scripting, no combat logging, no combat ghosting, and no hacked weapons, but otherwise they're pretty much standard servers. The two servers are set roughly 10 hours apart so that when one is day the other is night. That way my players can choose their enviroment. They're also both set up on a dedicated, high-speed server system. I also have a dedicated TeamSpeak server for my players and I will provide groups or clans their own passworded channel. And I'm moving into the area of offering my players two private hives as well. Currently Lingor Island is up and running and soon I hope to have the second private hive running the standard Chernarus map. Also, PvP is ALWAYS on. So please don't come in expecting a nice little PvE place to farm gear. Just sayin' :P

Up until recently we were hosting US 2881, a public hive server. Due to all the hackers and inability for us to do much of anything about them, we have decided to go private hive. We would like to build a community of players around our server that want to have fun and play DayZ. You won't be banned for killing admins or stealing our vehicles though we may hunt you down like the bandit you are.! :P Features: - Running a Bliss 50-slot private hive server on a VPS - meaning there aren't other DayZ servers on the same machine. - Running 24/7 - Veteran Difficulty - 3rd: On - Tracers: Off - NP: Off - CH: On - DM: On - Currently 130 vehicles including 2 helicopters (this may change) - Custom Heli Loot (removed L85 and AS50, put in new weapons) - Always Full Moon at night - Custom buildings for groups / clans - Vehicles / Tents properly saving - Side Chat enabled (though we don't want people using it for voice chat) - Updates / restarts happen pretty fast and you get prior notice - Server in US - Database backups every 30 minutes - Whitelist, application process and password used to minimize hackers - Our own private Mumble voice chat server Rules: Things not allowed No hacking No duping intentionally No ghosting - pretty much this shouldn't be possible on our private hive, but just in case someone finds a way to do it.. don't. No hoarding of vehicles - if you're two people, you don't need 5 vehicles. If your group has 1 helicopter, leave the others alone. This does not mean you can't steal vehicles from others, it just means don't create a parking lot of unused vehicles. No Alt + F4'ing to escape other players. Don't care if you do this to get away from zombies. Refrain from killing fresh spawns. You won't get banned if you happen to kill one, mostly what we mean here is don't camp the beaches looking for new spawns to kill. (Robbing, taking em hostage is fine). No using barbed wire or tank traps to block off popular spawn sites (fire stations, churches, etc). Exceptions to this are if you are inside the building at the time or if you are using the location as your home base. No begging admins for weapons or vehicles. If we want you to have it, we will add it as a spawn to the map where everyone can compete for it. No VOIP in side chat. We don't wanna hear your music, heavy breathing, TV, etc. No trolling or harassment over side chat. No excessive use of bad language, racist comments, basically use your common sense. We're not gonna kick your for expressing your displeasure in the fact that we just killed you, but just don't go overboard. Things we DO allow Kill on sight (KOS) is allowed though we encourage you to interact more with other players as we are trying to build a community here. Bandits are welcome, though we'd much prefer you truly play a bandit - hostage taking, robbing, etc are encouraged over just shooting on sight, though you won't get punished for KOS. Base building at major locations. If you can protect it, it's within your rights to own any spot on the map. Be prepared to really have to fight hard for the more popular spots. Role-playing is encouraged though not required. Anyone purposefully trolling or abusing someone attempting to roleplay will be dealt with harshly. Forming your own groups / clans. We'd love to have other active players on the server, whether bandit or survivor. If somehow you lose your gear / vehicles due to a hacker, the admins will work on replacing what we can. If you lose it due to zombies, bugs or glitch, we will not replace it. Sorry for this but it's impossible for us to prove you really lost the stuff this way. Interested in joining? Just visit our website and fill out the application. We'll get you processed as soon as we can, but note we like to play the game too so it may take a few hours. I held the same feeling for a while Harun, but then I realized that you run into an issue were you're screwed if the server you mainly play on goes down and you can't log on to it. You can't join another server and pick up where you left off, and if you do, when your main serve comes back up you're screwed again for the same reason. If you have the 20 second delay between a player log off and a character log off, then the scenario where a player logs in only to find themselves dead for no apparent reason can occur, when in fact they were killed after they had logged off the previous session before. This reduces the credibility of such deaths as possible bugs which can lead to late detection and often very frustrated players. Even if the delay were to be toned down to 5 seconds meaning only those who could actively perceive the player prior them logging off could act upon it, it does not solve the underlying issue of the player using their ability to swap servers to gain an advantage they would not otherwise have. My suggestion is about reducing the effectiveness of ghosting by locking a player out of any server for a set period of time after they log off. It works because it removes the player from the game for a set period of time thereby increasing the likelihood of any action they were going to take pointless. Basically it works like this; A logs off in the middle of a fight, they have to wait ten minutes before they can join any server. Once they join a server they can then go and move into a better position, but they have to log off a second times so that's another ten minutes. When they finally do log back into the original server the probability of their new position being of any importance is practically nil as the opposing side is more likely to have already left in the twenty plus minutes the player wasted ghosting.

Why not have it so that if you jump back on a server within the 10 or 15 minute period, it simply puts you right back where you were when you left. Then it changes ghosting to being essentially an alt+F4 putting you right back where you left the server at. If the hive knows where you were last, I'm fairly sure the server should as well.

We've all experienced it, you either find a guy when they least expect it or try to take out some one who's just camping a city in order to be a dick. They vanish and hop to another server to reposition themselves then reappear and attempt to shoot you in the back. The most voiced solution to this issue that I have seen is to add a delay between when a person logs off and when their character is removed from the game. I disagree. I feel that the true issue with ghosting does not lie in the ability to log out. In fact the ability to quickly log out is an important tool for those who wish to avoid conflict. No, the issue really lies in the period where the player repositions on an alternative server. The problem is that there's no penalty to rapidly switching servers, so players will hop from one server to another as it benefits them. Here's my solution to the problem. Add timer that prevents a player from logging into a server for ten minutes after they have logged out of a server. This would punish people who attempt to reposition by ghosting as it would effectively take them out of action for almost half an hour, and as an added benefit it also serves to penalize those who server hop loot spots. I also thought about suggesting that server hopping results in a random spawn location, but that it wouldn't help new players and people looking for a more permanent server to call home. The main issue with having the delay between player log off and character log off is the scenario where a player logs off one day and comes back to find themselves dead with no idea of how it happened. It just doesn't make for good game play in the end. I chose ten minutes as a cool down timer because it's a nice balance of being short in terms of RL time and being long in terms of game time.

No I understand the speed of Alt f4 it can be macro'd to a mouse button. The fail safe of the character persisting for 5 seconds is what I'm worried about. I thought for sure it was in the game already? With this though, there's no way. The ghosting servers and ending up on the coast failed too. Though i imagine that one isn't too bad as he wasn't gone long enough for him to "loot anything"

So me and my buddy were raiding Stary this morning. 15ish folks on the server. Before going in, we thermal the area. I covered him while he did so. We even did a bait run were I ran out to draw fire. Nothing, ok so we are looting the tents. I die. No biggie 25 day old character all the gadgets. I was killed by an AKM some where just infront of the tents in Stary. Guy Alt F4's to drop zombie aggro. Comes back, buddy is guarding my corpse, guy leans down to loot takes a head shot and 11 bullets exit my friends gun. I can't say for not if all 11 hit but at 15 meters I trust the majority did. Alt F4's again. We assume well at 11 bullets at best the guy is at 2k blood, bleeding broken blah blah. We've got a good ten minutes before he can even think about showing back up. Me having a hero skin starts my run back, before I could get to Stary from Otmel (Literally just a couple minutes), the guy managed to log back in kill my friend by ghosting in some where behind us (Over by the big industrial in stary) he insta aborts and sits in the lobby for a while. The player's name was Coldsteel. First of all I don't mind people using exploits its gonna happen. The question I have is, when you log out or Alt F4 isn't there suppose to be a small window where you're character can still die ? I thought it had a five second time period where all damage is recorded because 11 shots from an L85 at 15 meters...First one was probably a head shot. If not all center mass. I am curious how he managed to survive?

Let me start this by saying that until the recent episode I had with vilayer I was generally very please with their service. My problems as an admin arose when I found myself logging into my own server and almost immediately having someone teleport to me and kill me. Happens to me once, coincidence, 3 times over over a few days... not so much. On top of that recently I started having hackers enter my server very shortly b4 automated restarts and do mass kills. Shortly after other restarts and do mass vehicle teleports along with mass kills via teleporting ppl 100m+ up. I wanted to password to prevent this. Vilayer says no to passwords because it will infect the hive. Who cares if the hive is already "infected"? Who cares if the paying customers (admins) are fed up with public hive so had moved to the vilayer "private" hive to avoid it only to find out that vilayer has become the public hive v2.0. Btw to vilayer. You tell me how I can ban someone who shows up in my .rpt file with a hacked set of gear when I cant find them in any of the BE .log files? Only reason I know the guy was hacking or involved in hacking is he logs into my server with hacked gear. He logged out of my server b4 I caught him so I didnt get his guid anywhere. Downright amazing, but hey... the hive isn't infected unless you let ppl have passworded servers. They did say passwording will eventually happen, but not when, and were not willing to work with me so I can keep the server running. Instead Im supposed to pay them $$ for a service I cant use and they are not bothering to secure for me against pure griefing. I demanded a refund they eventually stated they would give me a prorated credit at most. Funny thing though the server advertisements state full ftp access which is NOT true. full server ftp access would not mean I can see files in the file manager but they are not visible when looking via ftp. Thats bait and switch. Now they do have an explanation for it I'm sure, but its still false advertising. Hope they have fun talking to my bank since they stopped talking to me. But if you cant get me passworded option or at least prevent people from joining my server without my pre approving I will not be reupping this account. These are the exact reason that we are making this one of our top priorities so we can help server administrators better protect their servers. Now our reasoning for not allowing passwords is similar to why the official DayZ teams does not allow passworded servers to run on their hive, people buy servers just to abuse this. Would everyone who passworded their server being abusing the system so they can infect other servers? Of course not but we need to protect these other customers as well. At this time I do not have an ETA on when you will be able to password your server at this time. They just need a server that has no active admin to pull off their hacks. So your reasoning for not allowing passwords if pretty pathetic. Go ahead and prorate me and close down the server. I will not be coming back to your service and I will be posting this in full on the dayz forums later tonight. And please dont tell me it isnt possible to have a simple solution to the ghosting issue. You could easily set it so ppl who server hop do so with no gear or end up on the starter locations when they come in. Either solution would cut down on that ghosting problem and could be done on the SQL database side. You could also mass ban ppl who write to your hive with gear that is clearly not legit like the guy who came onto my server with itemRadio. Again something that can easily be checked on the SQL database side and you could easily submit all of them to your own in house community ban list. You dont do any of that yet, instead tell the people who pay for your service to accept the glaring problems which you could address.

lol, no-pvp zones. Forget it. Hell Ive had my camp raided multiple times. Had ppl steal my car. Ive had ppl shoot me while I'm tabbed over to do rcon admin stuff. Funny thing though. The guys who were playing on the server a lot, even the ones who shot me on sight enjoyed the way it was. Did I have ppl rant at me over the rules? Yeah, but I just kick/ban them and they come over here to complain. Did I care? Not really. If they want to rant thats fine. I have no problem with them playing their way on another server that I'm not paying for. If they came onto my server though they were going to abide by the rules. If I caught you not abiding by them... I quickly show them the door. Kind of feel bad for cash4gold. He pulled his server down today and I began pulling mine down over the same issue. Unrelenting hackers have ruined the vilayer hive. I've had a very lengthy back and forth with them today about it and the responses I got were pretty entertaining. I was told I can't password.... but I can ban everyone if I want to as they enter my server. The reason for no passwording was that it would lead to bad admins "infecting" the hive. I'm thinking are they serious? Do they not realize that the problem is already happening? People just hack the stuff on server A and then go to server B to play. If they get banned from server A who cares? As for getting them on the community ban list that isnt going to happen unless the log files show whats in those magical backpacks the vehicle log shows AND the admin is on the ball for that server. Are they ghosting? why ghost to a passworded server? Why not just go to the numerous low/no pop servers that are on the same vilayer hive? The point is that the people who are hacking like that are NOT likely to pay for a server when they can easily get onto one of the many available servers. People who pay for servers want to make a place where they and their friends can simply have a good time. For most that means they don't mind new people, they dont mind bandits, or non bandits. They simply want a place where they don't have to deal with teleporting, ghosting, and a multitude of other disruptive hacks. Now if you want the kicker.... I had a guy on my arma2oa.rpt file today with an itemRadio. Now when I go to look for him in the createvehicle.log or scripts.log files he doesnt appear in EITHER!!! Now since he was on and off my server before I caught him I wasn't able to even get a guid to ban him. Clearly though he has a hacked item. Now my question is if vilayer wants to be the white knight for this game why dont they take a minute and regularly sweep their hive for people with what are very clearly hacked items. Ban each and every person they catch with them and the number of hackers will be substantially reduced. -

well that sucks. Tools for finding/preventing hackers are crappy, the hackers know it, admins know it, devs know it, hosting service knows it, and the rapidly diminishing player base knows it too. Admins are the only one paying for this game right now and we get all the abuse for trying to do the right thing. Whats really needed: 1. Passworded servers. Need to strictly firewall them from non passworded servers in some manner. 2. Ghosting prevention, last server being the only one you can spawn into at saved location, otherwise back to the beach you go. That one thing would substantially cut down on issues. 3. Hive database checks for hacked equipment, repeat offenders should get warning email, temp ban, and then a perma ban. Seriously amazes me how I keep finding ppl with itemRadio logging into my server. 4. A seriously beefed up rcon toolset. 5. Vehicle should only move at player request if they are the current driver. IE teleporting them should be locked away. At very least this should be logged when it happens. 6. Server admins should have a method for removing griefer barbwire. Every admin knows what Im talking about if they've run a server for awhile. 7. Player location changes should be logged if they cross a threshold from the last known location. Right now most of the teleporting doesnt show in the logs. 8. Newly created backpacks when they enter the log file should show whats in them. Would make it much easier to identify the ppl who are summoning in backpacks with full kit inside of them. Without those things I think all us admins are just being played for fools at this point. Rockit would be well served to address the hacking problem b4 ppl are fully soured with his game. At the very least he needs to say hey, I'm working on it and in the meantime admins are free to fight it however they see fit. -

no pm then? anyone else interested?.. *update* I think I can figure out whats happend, I re joined the server there to check my camp, my ATV was completely dry of fuel - even though I saved it at my camp 3/4 full, must be a bug with the current build or something and I guess thats why the helo is in the same situation. Whoever owns it is gonna be well pissed when they come back to find their chopper empty, so the clock may be against us here. Now i'd say it would be a hugh challenge to refuel the bird without a vehicle on this server, so the owner may be able to get fuel to it ghosting or, it's owned by a group and they have the means to get fuel to it. That being said it's kinda sitting in the same place now for at the very least two days, by the looks of things untouched - I have saved it, just incase it would despawn or something. -
yea server hopping causes a coastal spawn. Its an anti- ghosting feature that can be helpful to get away from the hackers that are just annoying.

Think a good portion is due to private hives. I've played exclusively on a private hive the last two weeks or so. It's been awesome. Loads so much faster. No deaths to hackers so far. Tents save and don't dupe weapons. No ghosting or server hopping and I haven't seen a single player combat log yet.

Outside of safety in numbers and some help getting geared, we have a sense of wicked team work which make us unique. If it is proven that you've done any of these things (with hard proof, server logs, fraps, or eye-witnessed by a senior member) your membership and status on the server itself may be in question. Be trustworthy. This I cannot stress enough, during your recruitment period you may be shown to a lesser priority base, and are expected to not give away said base's location. If we can't trust you, then you are worthless to us. You must be willing to do work along side other recruits, members, or senior members. You won't be given busy work, but some leg work may be asked of you, mainly to see if you can accomplish simple tasks. This includes following simple or complex instructions. You must be able to communicate clearly. Regular players "lost" to private servers?

private hive ftw atm. Generally higher populated and a more balanced mix of weapons. Some hives have removed AS50 and L85 thermal, geared up now means having an AR. Add in the fact that there's no ghosting or duping and you'll soon realise that (as said above) private hive is how DayZ was meant to be. Also don't think small community, many of the private hives have 2k+ registered players...all for a 50 slot server. -

If standalone really curbs hacking, duping and combat disconnecting / ghosting, then I am all for it and will gladly fork out 25 EUR for the Alpha stage it will be sold in.

You guys wouldn't happen to be the guys who hopped on and stated up front you were videoing it all and then proceeded to make asses of yourselves were u? none of my friends ghost, and when I catch ppl ghosting I ban them tyvm. Tbh catching ppl ghosting is not the easiest thing but when I do get reports of ghosting I investigate. I also ban for hacking, burying other ppls corpses, placing barbwire, and continued use of global voice. Most bans are of the global voice variety b/c ppl tend not to get it even when you kick them. I think the incident you are talking about is the guys rolling around in the vehicle that was hacked in. Idc who has a vehicle that was legit, but if it gets hacked in and I find you in it I'm banning your ass. I told the ppl driving it up front to get out and they insisted they just found it. Incidentally I'm fairly certain one of them was the guy I killed with a full clip of dmr to the chest at point blank range. Got to love ppl who dont die when to the first few hits, but survive long enough for you empty a clip, kill u, and then they bleed out. It is a private server and I post very clearly do not bury other ppls bodies. Im very clear when asked that u can take the stuff off it and toss on a zed to bury, or just take it all. JUST DONT BURY OTHER PPLs corpses!!! Yet for some reason that was a problem for you guys. One of you was involved in a firefight and the guy who returned to it finds his body gone. Reminder of the rule goes out and then you guys complain about it. Dont like the rule go elsewhere. took a minute to watch your video, nice, but you seem to be covering the chat where you are typing away about how the rules are bs etc. you dont stop bitching and eventually get kicked for it. On a side note it is a lingor hive server so you should be able to continue where you left off at on someone elses server. Have a nice day -

I concur, avoid Slap Private DayZLingor, power tripping dickless admin, pointless to play on. Don't play on this server. The rules got weirder and weirder. From kicking people for just shooting, to banning people for DRIVING VEHICLES. Then there were more weird rules coming down. No hiding corpses. Everyone just merely asked "Why?" and got kicked. All I said was "Wow, dis admin be crazy" and got kicked. I came back and spat some venom in chat and of course immediately got banned. Anyways avoid this server at all times, the crazy power tripping admin is using it just to justify the size of his miniscule micro-cock so your amount of fun is going to be inevitably limited by this dumbass. Just pick a different server and save yourself the time. EDIT: He never once actually banned anyone that was ghosting or combat logging. No decent bans were handed out ever. To be honest the only issue with wires are the glitches for those that have them. Oh noes my fire house door is blocked I can't get in. At best this is a time waste. If something is blocked off, really easy solution is to log into another server walk around it, go back. continue on. Once on the other side of them you can remove them. Tool box fairly easy for me to find. (Hell with finding matches though jesus...) All these things people are mentioning "they block off good spawns" well...to be honest if I found some IRL and seen an area that might have more supplies for me later, yes I would do that. The ghosting solution isn't a noble by any means resort but if someone wants to use the wire that way I'll take the five minutes to log into another server just to get to the "magic" spot on the wire. As far as scripting wire and traps every where ... well...I'd vacate the server as its obvious a skiddie is there often enough to do that. (Having encountered a time when the Northern Barracks was completely surrounded by tank traps and wire.) And as far as I know...I've never broken my legs vaulting wire. Nor started bleeding, so to me the only issue is the double stacked wires behind doors and such. -

Non-hive, non-official server. Not even the official map. This is not the place to discuss it. For the record, you are kind of a jerk, going to a server that's maintained by a group for, primarily, their own amusement. You said yourself that you were able to get an L85 and NVG without their fortifications stopping you, and then you went to their base and trolled them out of spite. That's bad sportsmanship. Go to another server if you want to get helicopters. And with regards to your thread title, you know full well that you were banned for ghosting, not for stealing the helicopter.
