Ghosting, server hop farming, combat logging..... all due to the nature/design of public HIVE. If servers were to manage the guns like the vehicles in the MOD, server hop would end . Imagine coming back to the server you were just on after ghosting on another and you get a message, " Client state has changed since last known point! Do you want to check your Firearms at the Door? ". If I had a server and I could implement gun control, I would. No more hopping! Problem solved. Although problems created? Some clients don't like being tied to a server? I suggest multiple characters to allow people to use other servers instead of moving chararcter from server to server without penalty. Each chararter can have it own "home server". You could still hop but you won't have any guns when you do so.

No one but hackers should be getting banned at this point. With that said, I think server hopping/ghosting is ruining the game. The game was not meant to be played as if we are magical teleporting people jumping through alternate dimensions, trying to get into a good position to kill another jumper, or trying to get that loot before any other jumper does. DayZ is not supposed to be the movie Jumper

I know that the Dev team are looking at this . .But they need to add the wait timer to the game ASAP.. They reported that they will look at added wait timers to players that are server Ghosting. For me it is bad. We have alot of players ghosting into other servers to Flank our groups all the time. This is breaking the gameplay. Please look at adding a 60 sec timer per server jump, Doubling the time for every jump.. This would stop the Ghosting. Thanks

I killed a girl and I feel bad about it.
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to gsp167's topic in Gallery
Actually, I've been killed quite a bit in Rust as well. That is to be expected in any game of this sort. The difference is that I don't cry about it. However, I and a few other people actually started a town of 20+ people, (which admittedly got trolled a bit and some mild hacker attacks took place, alpha) and grew to almost 50 members. We had to form a basic government, we had town meetings, ect. Some people are rude as fuck, others are quite friendly. Eventually some of the core members and I had to change servers due to the hackers, to go to an admin monitored server. The fact still remains that I have friends which I made in game, whom I can actually trust. We even have two female members of our group. You're playing Rust wrong if you can't find anyone friendly, and you're making huge assumptions about human nature. The first group I ever joined was 5 hours in the game, just me and six naked guys chasing down deer in the woods with our stones. It was so utterly hysterical and actually necessary that we bonded and formed a cohesive group. This is actually fascinating to me, because on a fundamental level, Rust and DayZ are not that dissimilar. In fact, they're so similar that fanboys tend to gather on either side and try to argue "which is better." But the fundamentals are almost exactly the same. So the question remains. Why is it that Rust players are generally more inclined towards diplomacy than sheer deathmatch PvP? DayZ has formed a culture of selfishness and murder. People are introduced to this game by getting killed, and for some reason, they can't seem to move past that. Murder is basically encouraged within the community as a playstyle. There's so much paranoia in the game and so little to do that PvP becomes an eventuality, rather than an activity engaged in for a real reason. Some of the key differences I think that Rust has are obvious. You get to see peoples' names up close. Everyone hates on that idea here, but it actually forms a natural reputation. Because the game has construction, people get invested in their bases and they can't just switch servers whenever they want. Learning blueprints on a server doesn't transfer to other servers. Logging out causes your character to sleep on the ground, totally vulnerable to attack. These small forced investments make a huge difference, as well as solving obvious problems,\ (such as KoS, ghosting, loot farming, ect) which plague DayZ and utterly destroy the gameplay dynamics. People get killed in DayZ with nothing and ask "why did you do that?" Usually to have their attacker respond "I don't know." It's because the culture of this game has been totally fucked. The mod created a huge stigma about "how the game should be played." There's no construction, no real goal, nothing at all to do or aim for, except for shooting other people. Let's face it. This game needs drastic changes, or else it's just going to boil down to a repetitive survival deathmatch with no real long term appeal. -
[POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners
Rantanplan replied to floj's topic in General Discussion
1PP servers and a separate hive are no solution to the problem at hand. You just divide the player base and roughly double the costs of hosting and maintaining the hives (on what might be high availability servers, and that over years). It may also increase the costs of designing the game for these two hives (balance etc.). I think it is a better investment to once spend the development time to address the real problem, evaluate it, and maybe find a super solution 1000x better than everything discussed so far... All that the separation achieves is that it reduces the number of players that feel the need to get the issue addressed. And that only temporarily, as with the steady growing player base, the number of 3PP players who demand a change to this game mechanic will grow as well. The separation may just postpone the investment in the design change, but meanwhile maintaining two versions of the game... I couldn't care less about the normal 3PP players, enoying the view of themselves, and having a nice and fair game with everybody else on the server. What I do care about are the people that build their gameplay around such issues. The "best" of those will scout for you with this exploit, then circumnavigate you on a different server (=ghosting), and after they killed you they duplicate the best items they can find on your body. These guys spoil the game for many others, and that's why I'd like their "tools and tactics" thwarted. But preferably in the least intrusive way for the "normal" players. No need to remove 3PP, but improve/reduce/remove the parts that lead to its use as an exploit. -
The only time i "server hop" (not sure if it would even technically be called that in the scenario im about to say) is when i have just joined a server and start taking fire before ive even had a chance to get my barrings. Then i exit out and join a different server. I.E. I decided to log off to go to work the other day and i logged off near the edge of the woods near the balota airfield. The next time i logged on again and joined the server, within 10-15 seconds (i hadn't even moved yet since it takes awhile for the whole screen to be rendered and crap like that) i was already hearing gun shot sounds and started to see a few bullets hitting near my feet, so in that instance i just immediately jumped to a different server. Im all about actually fighting and if i do die then i die, thats dayz for you, but if i just relogged on and immediately begin taking fire thats not really fair. So in those cases i believe its okay to exit and jump to a different server. But on the topic of server hopping to get geared out quickly/ghosting to an area to relog in and be better positioned to kill someone, yes thats ridiculous and i cant wait for them to implement something to stop that.

Let me preface this by saying no ghoster has ever killed me.. I'm not that stupid.. if I engage with another player and they combat log, I don't stay in the same area. It is very sad to see the number of people who brag about server hopping and ghosting behind players to get kills. This is an alpha phase of the game and using a known exploit over and over again just because it hasn't been removed yet is so juvenile. It is very sad to see the lack of honor displayed by some. It comes down to a mentality that it's ok to cheat if you don't get caught.. When players lack the skill required to play games, they rely on cheats and exploits to level the playing field. Usually in most Alpha/Beta phases of game development and testing, if people continue to use exploits, they are banned...

You died because of combat logging/ghosting, not because you tried to help people out. Don't start with "I tried to be a good guy and I died so being a good guy is wrong/not worth it". Better luck next time.
-
Do you guys think you're clever or skilled by doing that shit? It pisses me off that people not only do this sort of thing, but brag about it... Seriously this thread is about people bragging about combat logging and ghosting just so they can get their 2 inchers up by killing people who play fair. Can we close this shit please? Damn.

KOS is just boring at this point. Last night, I was playing with a couple guys. They provided overwatch from the tree lines and hills while I stood out in the open drawing people in. Those that were friendly to me, we gave supplies, those that attempted violence, they shot from a distance. It was great! I have no idea why you would kill someone on sight at this point. There are so many other interesting outcomes. Eventually our operation was compromised by server hoppers that used ghosting to kill one of us. I could see the player and we had them surrounded on the top floor of a building. I said, "You're dead if you don't come out we have you surrounded." Their reply, "I can just log out, that's fair it's still in the game." How friggen' lame is that. I cannot wait until "ruined" items are actually ruined and the server hopping and combat logging is addressed. I think it will provide even greater experiences besides that of simply killing other players.

What do you want to see in the next patch ??
zeroy replied to africanhungergames's topic in General Discussion
- Fix Zombie going through closed doors/walls/fences and add climbing stairs capabilities to them also - More Zombies and especially inside buildings but reduce the detection distance - Fix Combat logging/Ghosting by leaving the player on the server for a time after exiting - Enable hunting/food cooking -
Me,my brother and my friend were fully geared and went south looking for trouble. And trouble we found. We jumped on nearly full server and went checking the notorious Balota airfield. We scouted the place from a hill north from balota and notice movement in the control tower. I tell my friend who had mosin and scope to take him out while me and my brother take defencive positions in case someone comes for us. My friend fails to shoot the guy and they exchange couple bullets but no one gets hit. Then the ghosting begun. First guy pops up behind our sniper and shoots him in the back of his head (they clearly thought he was alone), while he's trying to check his gear my brother shoots him with his m4. Second guy pops up near me and goes after my brother, brother takes cover while I try to search for the enemy. See him moving and but 5 bullets in his back. There was so much confusion going on back then, I shouted like 2 times whether that guy was my brother and for a moment thought I shot my bro. After the second guy comes couple minutes of peace. We check our gear, we check dead bodies gears. I start retreating from the hill walking backwards thinking someone will ghost on me. And they did. Third guy, who apparently was the one in the control tower ghosted behind me and shot me in the back. Brother kills him when he's checking my body. And that's how balota's hill became burial ground for 5 people in less than 5 minutes and how I got my first kill.

Holy hell! Red glowing bullet firing hacker gun?!
jcrose803 replied to jcrose803's topic in General Discussion
After fighting for over 15 mins, expending over 40 mosin rounds and being subject to people ghosting, and firing whatever kind of illegitimate weapon that was I feel well within my dayz rights to remove myself from the situation. -
Should you only have one character per server?
Roshi (DayZ) replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Thanks for this but a few questions/points: Firstly, how would the loot-timer work? I am intrigued by your guarantee - inside knowledge? Also I don't see how loot timers would work for ghosting - are there any other plans that you know of that are aimed at fixing this? So far in this thread, there have been a few replies along the lines of "That's a dumb idea, there are better ways to fix these problems." However, no one seems to offer up any. Secondly, yes alpha, stability testing - I get that. Stability is the major reason for alpha, but this is a bug/unwanted feature and it has not been made clear yet how this will be dealt with. Also this is a suggestions forum and I think it's perfectly valid to shoot-the-shit/brainstorm alternative ways of doing things. While this particular suggestion may not please everyone (although 67% of voters like the idea) others may come up with novel ideas that even the devs haven't considered perhaps (my current favorite for this problem is http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/165355-server-jumping-quick-fix/) that do a better job. So I think these kinds of threads are useful (as long as they are creative and don't just mindlessly repeat the same ideas due to a search-button phobia). Thanks for taking the time to critique - look forward to more... -
I like the idea OP - a more elegant variation on the one server, one character idea I mucked around with (http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/162584-should-you-only-have-one-character-per-server/) - while still an imperfect fix gets around some niggly problems that that idea produced. I'd rather deal with the problems this sort of approach generates than the rampant ghosting and server hopping that the current system has.

We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.
Sinphaltimus replied to 1S1K-Airborne's topic in General Discussion
I don't think you can distinguish. If I put on a hero suit what's to drop me from being a bandit? Hero, bandit, civilian, are you talking 3 pc classes? Pick a side? Now you're creating a completely different game. I think the current plan I've read about more zombie, better loot/zombie respawning scheme and server hop/combat log/ghosting plans will dynamically change the way the game is currently being played in its current bare bones buggy state. A lot of these suggestions and complaints will carry a lot more weight once it reaches beta. -
What do you want to see in the next patch ??
doviszxc replied to africanhungergames's topic in General Discussion
I think they've said that they will mainly focus on the "ghosting" and "combat logging" thing. They will also add two shotguns, as far as i've seen, here they are : Yep. Both of those are planned. Chris Torchia @ctorchia "A 'WIP of the week' pic. You've seen it teased but soon you'll be able to find it." " Dean Hall @rocket2guns "fix combat logging and some other big bugs next goal :P" I don't think they will be adding vehicles anytime soon though, they are focusing on stabilizing the servers and fixing the biggest bugs. As for the desync, I agree. Annoys the living **** out of me. Oh, and theres theese guns in "planned" mode for right now. (( See DayZ wiki for more info : http://dayz.gamepedia.com )) Ruger 10/22. Not an official photo. The SKS. It has info about it in the wiki. (( http://dayz.gamepedia.com/SKS )) This is NOT an official photo. And the AK-74M. Not an Official photo either. Atleast we can get our hopes on getting some new guns ^_^ -Dovis -
I'd like that, but it's an ongoing cost for BI...then again once it's out of Alpha I'd probably be happy to subscribe on an annual basis in order for this to happen - a queue system would make sense though since it could also combat server hopping and ghosting...ideas for a different thread though :)

Can admins kick you for suspected server hopping/ghosting?
AllDayZSimon replied to thequantum's topic in General Discussion
How does recording them have any effect when you yourself said it's not cheating and it's simply a loophole.. This is what I was talking about earlier, there's quite a few posts here that just show how much easier things will be when private hives are released. Can we please stop with; "It's not a rule that you can't hop/ghost - But they're in trouble for punishing you. Here have their server removed from ____". You can't kick/ban players for ghosting/logging/hopping. You can't kick/ban players for openly hacking because it very well may just be a glitch in the alpha. You can't kick/ban players who exploit game-breaking glitches (Such as duping). However, you CAN kick/ban a player for saying "Fgt" because it's a racial/homophobic slur. Very solid set of rules. -
True. But it has been confirmed, that this (combat logging, ghosting) is high priority for the next patch. What you can do is very simple: Move. When you don't here or see something for some time (3 mins is a LOT of time in a fight ;)) move...change your position, eyes and ears wide open ;) Because either the other player Combat logged or is trying to ghost you, or he is trying to flank you (or he ran away) Just be careful when moving - you dont want him to give him a clear shot at you ;)

Whats your Preference Private or Public Hives?
lommetyv replied to Mcleane's topic in General Discussion
The day I discovered private hives on the mod I ONLY played on private hives. ¤ No server hopping, which means players will actually roam the map. :) ¤ No ghosting! (Logging off in combat, join another server, go behind the enemy, log back to the original server & kill your opponet) ¤ There will be no combat-logging & joining another server. You have to join the same server, which means you can camp his combat-log spot. >:( ¤ You get to learn the location of tents & cars. ¤ You get to know the players you play with & some private hives even have forums. ^_^ ¤ There will be admins only focusing on their server. Private hives would solve a few issues. :) -
Whats your Preference Private or Public Hives?
phoboss replied to Mcleane's topic in General Discussion
Pro for all: You have a choice. No one is forcing you to play on either one. Public: Pro: you can switch the server if you encounter bad performance, a hacker or anything else you don't like about the server Con: It encourages people to ghost, server hop and combatlog. Private: Pro: No ghosting or server hopping. Combatlogging only to a certain degree. (You could leave, but can't be sure the guys attacking you aren't still there when you come back.) You can somewhat develop a own community on your server. People get to know each other, and its much more likely to run into someone again. Con: If the server sucks, crashes, goes down, your char is lost. You can't escape bad admins or hackers. -
I hop when I need to (bad connections, performance, etc..) . I will sometimes gear up on an empty but typically try to stay on hi pop servers as much as possible. If i die on a hi pop server AND i know it recently reset, i will stick it through and scavenge there or else I'll hit an empty server. I hate scavenging on full servers that have already been pickedclean. Seems like a waste of time just trying to find the very basics that will get me to the next location in time to search more empty houses. I've starved to death too many times to enjoy that any further. Once they redo loot spawning system, it will pretty much kill a lot of my hops. when I first started playing, it was low pop servers all the way, and a lot of hopping. I am slowly easing my way in to the desired experience, get on one server and stick it through. But there still needs to be a lot of fixes put in place such as the loot/zombie spawns, ghosting and combat logging before that dream is realized for me.

Now some discussion has been happening over this recently on the forums and even within my own group of friends. So What is your preference and why? I personally have always gravitated towards private hive servers and not because it stops server hopping as that can be stopped with the simple implementation of a downtime every time you join a new server, but more because of the community that builds around a private hive server you get to know everyone if you play on it long enough the douche bags the guys that can help you when your in a fix it's great but a lot of the community came from side channel which currently is not in the SA and I am not sure yet if I want it in or if it was implemented for there to be no voice side channel so we don't have to listen to people rage when they die there are pros and cons to both private and public hive and below I will try and update them as you guys post comments on you own opinions. Public Hive Pros - you can switch the server if you encounter bad performance, a hacker or anything else you don't like about the server. - no power abusing admins and admin friends. - no donator gear, donator bases/houses, donator helicopter etc. - no extra loot, buildings etc. Cons - It encourages people to ghost. - server hopping. - no possibility to rollback server after hacker attack. Private Hive Pros - You get to learn the location of tents & cars. - You get to know the players you play with & some private hives even have forums. - There will be admins only focusing on their server. - Sense of community. - No ghosting or server hopping. - possibility to rollback server after hacker attack. Cons - If the server sucks, crashes or goes down, your character is lost. - Possible bad admins and admin friends getting free loot.
