vehicle "hoarding", what the hell is it?
Daddy'o (DayZ) replied to Daddy'o (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You're assuming people who don't hoard vehicles (in other words owns 1 car or such) stashes it close to the coast, which rarely happens. Most likely people who don't hoard vehicles and do not collect them still take them as far away from high traffic areas such as the coast. EDIT: And if you figure that stashing vehicles in general is considered hoarding, would you go through the trouble of fixing a vehicle just to drive it from A to B and then just leave behind? I don't think so. -
vehicle "hoarding", what the hell is it?

You must have down syndrome/dyslexia so I will keep this simple. Clan A) hides all vehicles at campsite A) Player B) does not find any vehicles due to clans hiding them all The.Fucking.End. -
Some minor changes to improve (re)playability
LockeDown replied to kawaiigirl42069666xxxxxx's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
heli crash sites are rare, and I've come across plenty with viable loot on a server that's been up for quite a time. I don't believe this merits change. More vehicles would be nice, I'm not against the idea but more vehicles brings more stress on the server. As for vehicles despawning after x amount of time not being used- they already do that. Making it so that vehicles just vanish after a few hours without someone in them is less realistic then they are in their current state. Plenty of servers I've seen reset at the onset of their night cycle. I would like to see that changed. As for the viability to see in darkness, you don't have to turn your brightness up or anything. You have a flashlight. Illuminating your position is dangerous, but it gives you visibility. That's the point. Spawning in more NVGs makes no sense. Night vision is treasured because it's rare AND useful, unlike mountain dew. Again, killing is too grey to define black and white like this. If you're forced to kill a group of freshly spawned bandits who attempt to kill you, all the sudden- you're the bandit with the bounty. There shouldn't be visible or game changing action taken against bandits. Guess what? In real life, it's easier to be an asshole to get what you want than it is to be charitable and kind. So this holds true to our nature in game, methinks. As for hackers; if a game exists- there will be hackers. That's life. -
vehicle "hoarding", what the hell is it?
Tigger (DayZ) replied to Daddy'o (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Honestly, I would think it's rarer than everyone claims. Spent last 2 days running through W and N forests. Found a number of vehicles, but always just a single one, parked under some tree. Found tents too, but rarely more than 2-3 at the same place. -

Oh Andrej, I'm the guy that shot at you, there seems to be loads of people at that airfield and I was itching to try out this sniper. Not used to the bullet speed yet otherwise it would have hit  That and I was heading there to help Megaman myself, hes the third person in our group (don't let him drive the vehicles you love). He mentioned you might have an M249, that wouldn't be the one I found would it? Anyways since you're just crazy enough to help an armed person I'll give you the location of your bus, but don't think I wont shoot at bus drivers any less. Tons and tons and tons of 1.7.2.4 servers LOCKED
ODoyleRulez replied to chaossound's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Post it here, we can dish out justice ourselves lol. I will personally go to many of them on my bare assed character and crash their parties. Search the borders of the map, swim to the island, if you see a camp with hoarded shit it is likely the admin and friends. Then just have a blast. Empty the tents into the vehicles. Blow them up or hide the stuff... then save the tents empty. It is a good time. -

Yeah I can understand just having one for transport, but there is group with multiple vehicles. I was just wondering whats the purpose in having so many? Just to say look what we have or do people with those many vehicles Or make like a vehicle convey making raids. But for me there is nothing like having 8 guys in your group looking over a car in the middle of the field at electro in the middle of the night with the car lights on. Not only is fun to shoot people, its funny as hell when we had a player nearby talk to the guys that we shot, saying "lOok boy dont you dare try to steal my car" or stuff like that. -

Have an arbitrary amount / percentage of vehicles that respawn after 24hours regardless. Maybe the Quad & Trials Bike & certainly the bicycle as these have little to no storage capacity. For the non bike vehicles add a more gamey mechanic where the vehicle must be kept to a certain state of repair else it is respawned again after 24hours. ie add engine probs (fixed with toolbox/scrap metal), add punctures so all 4 wheels must be inflatted (either a new wheel or repair & pump), Fuel Tank may leak (pierced by a crash/running over a zombie) so it becomes empty or if its empty from use, no fuel = respawn and lastly if the windscreen is broken (by crashes/running over a zombie), if any of these aren't "fixed" then vehicle is respawned.

Problem: vehicles are as rare as hens teeth, and a favorite item to hoard Solutions:alter some vehicle characteristics, and introduce some new (crappier) vehicles I think there are some nice offroad vehicles in this game, e.g. the dirt bike and jeeps. Keep them as they are but make the town cars and road biased vehicles so terrible offroad that to hide one in the forest would be the most tedious act ever. i have seen suggestions for adding things like scooters, other old motorbikes would suit too. put these in and make them dangerous and pointlessly slow offroad, also make them spawn in a decent (but perhaps not perfect) condition. you could also make them have no storage and be unsavable so they reset fairly often. The idea is to have rare vehicles that people can hoard and cherish, and can be seen once in a blue moon, but also to have other common vehicles that stay in constant circulation and aren't such a valuable commodity that people have to selfishly hide them. this would also give players more to do and more to fight over. The rare chances i have had to use vehicles in DayZ have been fantastic, and it is a real shame that people can't enjoy them more. Plus it doesn't seem to add any to realism, rural soviet towns are rife with old bangers and bikes there is no reason they should disappear when zombies show up. Driving a large bus 3km up a forested mountain on the other hand, is a pretty unrealistic survival tactic IMHO. What do you think?

Whether you're a hardened veteran, or a fresh off the shore newb - everyone can benefit from a couple tips, tricks, and pointers. This post will be dedicated to the giving, and receiving of tips that may change the way you play for the better. Others who have good tips to share are welcome, and those who would like to receive pointers even more so. Hopefully this will be pinned eventually. This is a lawless zone, DO NOT TRUST ANYONE unless you have reason to do so. Other players will, more often than not, kill you at the first opportunity. It doesn't matter if you don't have any gear they need, they will often kill you just for kicks. If someone commands you to "stop", or "stop moving", or "halt" - DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE. They are often just trying to get an easier shot at a target standing still. Serpentine (*run in zig-zags) and head for the closest tree line - DO NOT attempt to take cover behind nearby debris. You will often be a sitting duck while they can advance their position or lure you out with a false sense of security after time has passed. Stick to the tree-line, even when you think you're deep in the middle of nowhere. Never assume that all the other players are somewhere else, or in major cities. You're not, and they may not be either. When you hear shots that are close to you (whiz by, or hit the ground near you) - resist the urge to stop and attempt to pinpoint the direction, or position of the enemy. They already have the jump on you - because 1. You're now confused 2. You're adrenaline starts going 3. They already know where you are - you aren't so lucky. 4. There may be a sniper mil dot on your head the moment you crouch or go prone. I would venture to say 60% of the people who tell you they're "friendly" are not, be on guard, and even if you decide not to engage them - be aware of their actions. Switching weapons, reloading, or even them bringing their gun up to your body or face may be red flags that you need to kill them or be killed. Just because you are nice to someone does not mean they will be nice in return, just because you helped a survivor kill some zombies does not make you BFFs, and there's no indication that he won't turn his gun on you afterwards. Go into every situation prepared - not gear wise. Ready. Go into every residence, market, church, firestation, hangar, or even town EXPECTING players to be armed and ready. Go around every corner like you know there's a player waiting on the other side to ambush you. Go through every door prepared to see someone in the next room. This will make your life a lot easier. The real thing that kills most people aren't the tactical disadvantages, but it's getting comfortable - and not being prepared when shit goes down. Learn the controls newb. Know what your character can do, and how, do not just try to jump into this game and learn as you go - you may be missing something important. No matter how good your gear gets, or what items you aquire...make sure in the back of your mind you remember how easily it can be taken from you - IF YOU GET ATTACHED TO YOUR GEAR: YOU'RE GUNNA HAVE A BAD TIME. All good things must come to an end (probably around 2-4 days IF YOU'RE LUCKY.) Treat everything as temporary, you can get another. Just because you met someone on the forums, does not mean they're trustworthy - people are looking for newbs to set traps for on the forums all the time. If you see a marker on the map entitled "Heli crash site!!", or "Camp site found! lots of loot!" or anything that seems too good to be true? It probably is. Do not investigate unless you have absolutely nothing you don't mind losing. Other people can see markers on your map, do not mark important areas, like where you set up your tent. Others will run up, and you might get done up. Know what the tools do: Flashlight(L): obvious.cmon. Entrenching tool: removes barbed wire, sandbags, and tank traps. Map(M): talks to you and tells Dora the explorer where to go. Tool box: allows you to fix up vehicles, cars, boats, bikes, trucks, and (helicopters), Binoculars( B - : Allow you to scope out an area. Night vision goggles(N): Allow you to perceive things clearly at night without the use of flares, chem-lights, fires, or gamma exploits. Hatchet: allows the cutting of wood for fire. Matches: enable you to make a fire to cook meat on. Hunting knife: allows you to gun meat from animals you kill to cook. Watch(o): allows you to tell what time it is on the server. Compass(k): Allows you to attain your direction. Any others will be apparent. If you die, you body will last (30-40) minutes, if your corpse has not been looted (or hidden by your assailant) you may go back and retrieve your belongings if you make it in time. LEARN THE MAP - it helps to have use a map on the internet, or to have a map open on a second monitor whilst playing. The more you know about the terrain, and geography, the easier you'll find it to do what needs to be done. It is often easier to win 1v1 gunfights in 1st person mode. 3rd person mode can be used to see around corners, and over walls - however - know that your enemy has the same ability. Scope high traffic areas out before you enter them, you may find a sniper on a roof, or a survivor running for dear life through the streets, both are important to be aware of. Learn the sniper spots, and learn how to avoid their effective areas, so that you can avoid them (or sneak up on snipers if that's what you're into (high risky, high reward)) If you "think you might have" seen or heard something - assume you did. Better safe than than standing on that lonely shore once more. Take the high ground whenever the opportunity presents itself, it offers a better vantage point of your surroundings, and anyone who happens to be passing below will likely be looking straight ahead or down a slope, not up it. Freezing up, is the easiest way to get killed in this game, I cannot stress it enough. react fast, and rely on your instincts. Zombies, or Zeds must walk slowly in buildings, and can easily be lost by weaving in and out of tree trunks, shrubbery, or anything else that breaks their line of sight. They will investigate the area, but will lose interest in you fairly quickly. Zombies have about 4500 health, about 3 shots with a pistol - 1 shot for a head-shot instant kill. Players obviously have 12000 health, but one headshot is the end of them too. Learn how much damage guns do, and don't stop unloading into someone until you see their death message, or your murder / bandit kill number rises. They may be playing dead, or simply be unconscious. Learn the ailments and how to alleviate them. For instance, a broken bone - which can be received from gun shot wounds, Mike Tyson-like zombies, falling a distance above waist level, the wind, rain drops, particularly vengeful blades of grass, walking past other players or objects too intimately, or just no reason at all. Can be taken care of with a shot of morphine...because our characters are badass, and they only need a painkilling/sedative to sprint around like marathon runners on shattered bones. Assume everyone on a night server has night vision goggles, don't run around with a flashlight, they can be seen for miles. Don't use flares unless you don't mind being noticed from the moon, and only use chemlights if the situation calls for it. If you get night vision goggles, don't assume you can walk into any major place and loot it because you're the only one. You're not. Helicopter crash sites, and other random spawns are widely sought out - do not assume you're the only one searching, or the only one who's found it. Be prepared to kill, whether it's a player, or 8 zombies that have spawned around the helicopter crash site. Trailing zombies through a town, city, or road will easily get you noticed, not only the movement - but the noise of the zombies will alert other players. Use your weapons sparingly, and tactically, don't put a whole Lee enfeild clip into a walking zombie in the middle of Chernogorsk. Gun fight will put all nearby players on alert. It may scare some, and it may rouse others as to your position. A healthy dose of skepticism will go a long way in this game. Enjoy yourself, play the way that enables you to have the most fun, whether that's getting 5 friends and forming and axe murdering gang, hunting players on the shore, sniping, simply surviving, killing Zeds, or doing crazy things. Don't let anyone tell you the right way to play this game, because that's up to you. My goal is simply to offer tips to those who want them. If you have more tips to add, if I've left important things out, or you've benefited from the tips. Post!

i've had similar experienced with the admins of this server. as of right now at 5:12pm CST the server is passworded with the admin and his group on the server because they are trying to reclaim the vehicles etc. that they lost i'll edit in a screenshot later edit : http://i.imgur.com/rZZLC.png the admins regularly abuse global chat, restart and lock server when losing vehicles, etc. and Curgon, you guys need to seriously rethink the policy for reporting fuckhead admins/servers like us175. i'm not going to waste hard drive space, time, and effort recording these assholes.

I don't destroy camps unless i suspect duping. Hoarding is fine. Vehicles i dont even leave them one. -
In the server US 848 me and my team was able to get 2 vehicles (a blue van and a white pickup) and we filled them with items, we hid and saved them, in the other day the vehicles were there, the admin said the server would restart after 30 minutes, we waited for the server to restart but when it we came back after the server restarted the vehicles weren't there anymore and in the server US 314 we got another vehicle and the server went off but the vehicle was still there when we came back but this time the items inside weren't there anymore, so what do we do? save the vehicles or not? When are u guys going to fix it?

Permadeath in the post apocalypse (bit of an essay) *repost from newbie group*
JerFeelgood posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I posted this in the Newbie discussion group when I meant to post it here so.... Yo yo, I recently discovered the world of DayZ and ArmA, but unfortunately do not have the sys req at the moment to actually play the game. I've watched a lot of videos online re the project and been reading the forum intensively... newayz.... I like what I think Rocket was aiming for when he started this project. To use existing tools (The ArmA engine with which he was familiar) to simulate a post apocalyptic world in which a social experiment regarding which direction humanity would take in such a situation. I believe when I get back to my PC to actually play the game, I would like to play keeping the ideal of the original concept in place. In looking at the way the game plays now, I believe that their are several problems outside of his control in a F2P open server environment (and that he will never be able to control with ANY update) that limit the viability of the experiment. Players will not give up ingrained tools and concepts to actively participate in the experiment. The biggest tool/exploit is communication. In a paranoid post apocalyptic world, communication should be extremely difficult. The existence of global chat, where you can assess someones intentions from miles away should be strictly curtailed. All communication should be restricted to within the game. With the existence of TeamSpeak and Ventrillo this will be impossible to enforce. Absolutely impossible. And without this restriction it makes it way too easy for clans and squads to dominate the combat environment. Imagine a group environment where you had to communicate with flashlight or visual codes to transmit outside of ingame audible distance. I think if players were willing to give up their communication tools, it would go a long way to making the game a lot more interesting from a survival point of view. It would be like reinventing the wheel in terms of gameplay. How would you assess someones intentions without these tools? would a community reinvent signals and tools to advertise their friendly intentions? Imagine your squad of four hunters trying to coordinate an attack without an independent comms tool? Imagine they had to make sounds audible to all in-game to actually communicate and coordinate, you're set up in your sniper position and one of your squad scouts 400m away to your west, and then wants to return, how does he identify himself when returning to the squad to prevent infiltration? After player death, how do you safely relocate your squad? I think this would MASSIVELY increase paranoia levels in the game... and go a long way to increase the seriousness of the permadeath experiment... How would you even relocate your friends after you wake up on the beach? how would you identify yourself to them to come within the security perimeter that would inevitably spring up? How could one enforce this in the current game environment? It could only be done voluntarily. Players would have to choose to give up the tools on which they rely. And that could be maintained with closed access subscriber based servers or a code of conduct signup in the installation of the mod/EULA. A server where one must sign up to a code of conduct before being allowed in, and being banned for breaches of the code of conduct. It should be fairly easy to determine from admin observer mode whether someone is using illegitimate modes of communication. This code of conduct would only relate to the use of tools external to game and the post apocalyptic world which the devs have not deliberately given you access. Anything in game would be fair game. PvP vs PvE seems to be a massive argument ongoing in these forums at the moment.... I would argue that it should be possible to make the PvP element part of the PvE so that there is no difference, but this would only be possible if you could limit access to the tools that make PvP play so easy i.e. ease of communication, the abiity to bring equipment from one server to another... I have no real problems with lone nuts on killing sprees, they may well be a reality of the post apocalyptic zombie world. I do have a major problem with players using tools not given (external comm programs) to them to clean up in the game... is the use of ANY external software not an exploit in itself? anyway, I also think the 3rd person look around corners exploit is a bit broken when a tool (mirror on a bayonnet anyone?) could do the same in a much more immersive and realistic way. I have no problems woth loads of guns lying about but surely in the post apocalypse ammo would get really rare really fast. Readily consummable items should have the highest rareity value (ammo, matches, food, fresh blood, meds, batteries etc) and making them extremely rare woud go a long way to absorbing the PvP element into the PvE one as camping cherno wouldn't allow you to survive. You'd have to get out into the woods to make your own food. Similar to how vehicles are restored with parts, a limited access to lead, saltpetre, fire and relevent casting tools would allow you to make your own ammo and make it a tradeable commodity, It's the ease of access to these resources that makes PvP style of play so easy. it would be so easy to make an ingame specific tool which is a container, into which you place the required elements, then use it at a relevent spot an out pops what you where aiming for. Mouldy fruit + mortar and pestle + distillation equipment + fire = penicillin. Blood extaction kit + container + well hydrated/well fed indiviaual = bloodbag. Thinking along the lines of potion making from oblivion or skyrim. An ability to perform certain tasks could be restricted to certain environments. Imagine a garage building in a couple of towns where you would have to push/tow vehicles to in order to perform certain sorts of repairs, a chemist where one could make meds, and so on for all of the in game essentials..... Why are people so absolutely willing to circumvent the dev inspired game concept of permadeath? With a player death, surely all previous knowledge and ties should be lost to you. This includes knowledge of your friends and the surroundings.... It has always been true that the two greatest tools to humanity are knowledge and information. An ability to store and transmit these. In the post apocalyptic world, so much of both should be lost as to make certain specialist equipment both unusable and unmaintainable. In game high end electronics would suffer quickly, and as a result should disappear relatively quickly, and thence their value should be huge. This would imply the game would have to have a skill acquisition system, and massive penalties for those individuals without access to certain skills i.e. PvP bandits. These simple couple of things would inspire communities to spring up around certain resources, become protective of those resources and thence make those resources tradeable as they would have value... And with restricted access to bullets, meds and beans, I would not see a player killer surviving very long. With no comms, coordinated raids on burgeoning communities would have a much lower chance of succeeding. And lastly, the threat element from the zombie apocalypse should be massively strenghtened. If it was bad enough to take out the world in the first place it should should still present a massive threat to all human life. Ideally adding extra senses in game would add to the realism, touch (think wind sense, heat sense), smell and taste via a pc odor plume (and other odour plumes) and wind directions for upwind/downwind combined with a colour code to identify the type of odour. A zombie awareness of these elements would lead to an increased threat factor, a group of people would generate more odour and thence would attract more zombies, staying in a place too long could massively increase risk and should prevent camping.... I really don't know how many of these game devices could realistically be added to the game engine without overwhelming the server and user hardware.... Anyway. Sorry about the essay. I'm all for some PvP play once it's made intrinsic to the game device. I apologise if some of these ideas have been discussed in other threads.... and big up to the devs for the concept. It seems clear that the PC gaming public are fairly homicidal... will that be the result of the DayZ experiment...? My closing thought... do players want a survival based community game or a modern-day PvP persistent world warfare game with a zombie threat... do zombies in modern culture not just replace the wolves and bears and dragons that represented the horror threat of the medieval and dark ages? whew. that was almost to much. hope i don't get flamed... question about vehicle spawning
Turk (DayZ) replied to Slyguy65's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So basically, as every server has a clan, ALL the vehicles (excepy helicopters though no doubt every spawn point is being camped until found) are taken and stashed so there is little to no chance of finding a vehicle therefor no one will ever find 1 again... hmm this is kind of a broke mechanic, no? Surely the engine can handle some temporary "extras"? Even if it were the bicycle, Trials-bike & quads that were duplicated that at least would be something to strive for as a non clan member as it stands the best you can hope for is to stumble across their stash. Just on a brain fart i'd say If the game is to be considered a sim of sorts wouldn't there be a LOT more vehicles - i'd hazard between 2 per village, around 15 for medium sized towns such as zelero & a minimum of 30 per larger towns like cherno & elektro. Half it at least for completely unrepairable apocolypse scenario and tweak further in relation to player count and that should allow a few spares to go around. 50% saveable the other half respawn every 24hours? Surely something has to be done other than preventing vehicle saves off map. -
dupers..i gave them something they wont forget.
Bushmaster14 replied to Hashisx's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
A major reason why vehicles were hoarded is because tents were fucked up. If the tents are fixed then the need for something like bright blue van or massive V3S are over. As far as hoarding goes, get over it. Its called game mechanics and made into this game with every bit of intention. Take your communist ideals to the open fields of Electra or Cherno where you can put them into practice,I'm certain someone needs your gear or at least your ear. And duping will be ended soon enough. -

Post!
