This would prevent teleporting but not server hopping for loot. If you add a n-second freeze in connect' date=' you get the best of both worlds. [/quote'] I agree 1 hr ban for leaving is too long and arbitrary, I say if you leave server A you can rejoin server A without penalty... unless you connected to another server (Server B) in which case you have a 10min ban on server A. That would stop the more obnoxious ghosting and wouldn't unduly inconvenience people either. 20 sec staying on server when disconnecting + 20 sec freeze on connecting. How about that?

I'd say 30 seconds. 10 seconds is still short enough to possibly escape and just server ghost to a new position. Possibly even prevent you from joining a new server for up to 5 minutes. How about if they could implement a system that would just auto-ban you from any server you quit from for an hour or so? If would completely prevent server ghosting to kill others, and if you’re just trying to find a server that’s playable, it won’t affect you, and it would also help you by keeping you from joining a server you’ve already checked. In a server but need to take a short break, and still want to play on the same server? Just quit to the lobby and come back in once you’re ready to go again. A system like this could be setup to only ban you once you fully quit from the server. This solution seems to me to be the best: 30 second timer coupled with being temp-banned automatically for 1 hour from any server you quit from.

There isn't much you can do, and I doubt the engine allows for moving a player's spawn. It seems simple, but moving a player from position A to B is very complex, especially if they were on a tower, prone or otherwise. Just look at the debug spawning problems going on even now. Forced spawn points could be camped (like the coast) and alerting people to a incoming spawn is asking to be griefed on arrival, and trying to adjust the engine code could be a nightmare (as I haven't seen or touched it). But if it is possible, moving an inbound player away from others could be good, although it would go from them spawning behind to, to them spawning in the tree line and watching your front door (or window) awaiting his cause for removal to leave his abode. EDIT: They could just add in a delay in saving the player's location, making them spawn in at an older location. This makes the player take longer to move back to their location, or they'd have to sit in one spot for a time before disconnecting so it will save. Ghosting via server hopping would take far longer, and people trying to server hop for loot would either have to wait longer to hop, or sometimes end up in a place they don't want to be (outside, where they had been 5 minutes before they raced into that barracks to begin their server hopping). Just an idea. I'm not in agreement until I see a much better idea. Sorry.

It's this kind of crap that really pisses me off. I'm fortunate enough to not have had it happen to me as far as enemies server ghosting, but I have had people do the quick D/C after I kill them and respawn in right near where I killed them. Oh, and I don't think there's anything against posting someone's name that does it.

to solve this, why not have a wake up period? where someone couldnt instantly spawn in and start shooting unless someone jostles them or wakes them up by walking into them? After all, spawning in is already a disadvantage for players who are silly enough to login at say... the nw barracks? so why not encourage people to find a safe place to log out by having that little time of vunerability. It would drastically reduce the feasibility of ghosting to perform pvp.

Liberation! (Mechanic of reclaiming towns for Survivors)
damonjay replied to Dreganius (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Am i the only one that see's a major flaw in this Idea? All it would require is a a group of bandits to take advantage of "ghosting" - or what ever its called All bandits would need to do is go onto a different server, go to the same town as the liberated town, Disconnect, Reconnect on the same server as the town. and you have yourself within the town Probably in a House with a prime View on all the inhabitants. essentially Ruining the game for everyone who tried to liberate the town. Dont get me wrong, i like the idea. but there are just a few things that would ruin this feature. -

to piss on datguy's self-righteous parade, here are my last three lives a) DMR and mk48 mod0 with all gear (NVGs, rangers camo, coyote pack, GPS, ect) - 11 murders, one bandit kill, 530 zeds and 11 days on the clock after maybe 40 hours in game I died to a random ak on a hill, my buds avenged me and split the loot b) none of my mates wanted the mk48, so I crept north and retrieved it - turned out to be useful: before I'd shot a single zed it murdered someone racked up another three murders and died after two dayz/six hours to some ghosting cheater c) I took a few days out to cool off after meeting that weaselly little shit I when met up with my tribe again, one of us stumbled onto another group's camp and walked away with a spare M107 I didn't like it though, so when we found a crashed heli with rangers, a DMR and mk48 I made the switch I'm now five days/25 hours into this life and have taken NVGs off one victim, a coyote backpack off another and hacked some poor woman to death when she refused to say hello @pfcWilliam yeah the mk48 is lovely oh my god so lovely gotta keep finding them choppers bud, we just been getting lucky here's the mk48 kill that earnt my latest NVGs -
Stop exploiting, and maybe I'll stop making your life a living hell. List of exploits: Server Reset (could be coincidence) Item Duping Ghosting To anyone doubting their duping: There was 10+ nvgs/ghille suits at their camp (took them all). I checked their camp again (after I murdered them) and I found more nvgs.

Solution for server hoping to gain position.
CosmicOsmo replied to PintOfBass's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This is the perfect "ghosting" fix and the OP is right on. A relog timer for server-hopping A->B->A kills ghosting without impacting players who disconnect and just want to get back on (A->A) or are trying to find a server with the right settings, low lag, etc (A->B->C). Disconnecting to avoid death requires a separate fix (logically, a logout timer). -
Attention: These suggestions are aimed towards what the game can be. The Arma engine is a completely different system compared to most of the DayZ community's idea of what the game can be. Rocket did mention a little clue about possibly making this a standalone game. Also, the development team could have thought of these already. Please post your opinions and modifications to this post and keep it on track. Environment: [The ideas and possibilities are endless and only limited to the imagination of fellow DayZ players. Perhaps a New York themed large scale map?] -Lights in the city some perhaps flickering due to damage. This is only depending on the time frame of how long it's been since initial infection but would add another "creepiness" factor to the game. -Wild animals including bears and wolves in the forest would take out the simplicity of traveling more treacherous. -Wandering Zombies should be able to roam the lands simulating their search for brainz. -Minor amounts of farming due to the theory of moving towards the survival aspect and learning to leave our "lives" behind. -Additional weather conditions and various tactics on how to outlast/survive them. Inventory: [The current inventory that we, as players deal with, was not made for an in-depth system that we are used to as DayZ players.] -Receive an error message when not enough spots are available Perhaps "Inventory is full" -Option to have the Backpack inventory open while looking at your main character menu is open. -A sound of "rustling" while someone goes in your backpack. -A trading system between two characters until a final solution to dropping items and not deleting them. Vehicles: [Once a better physics engine can be added/modified, the vehicles will become even more fun and worth it to complete. Although, many will request more vehicles to servers.] -Inside a vehicle, the option to roll down a window, shoot with a limited field of fire restricted to your seat/location in the vehicle. -Ability to look at the gear/inventory while in the vehicle. -Vehicle listing of the amount of spots in the inventory that are available in the vehicle. Items: [This is a very exciting section due to all the ideas we can come up with together.] -Matchboxes should come in quantanties of 32 matches and can run out. If the elements are harsh at the time of starting a fireplace, it will give a message saying "Match went out due to rain/wind/etc." -Magazines should have an additional feature due to the fact that ammunition is interchangeable now. Now, keep in mind, just because you have 50 rounds of 7.62 and two DMR magazines, you could only fill to only two of those magazines. Refilling a magazine could have it's animation and timed cooldown. (Fillling M16 magazines in real life is very time consuming. =P) -Campfires should have an inspect feature available with three tiers with a time window; Coals are hot (been put out in the last 5-10 minutes, Coals are smoldering (been put out 10-25 minutes), Coals are cold (25-a number left to the players' imagination.) -Option to utilize your sidearm alongside your flashlight at the same time. It takes a lot of training to become effective firing at targets this way and the suggestion would be increasing accuracy when your flashlight is not out. -Weapon attachments system similar to Resident Evil in game would add another dynamic to your personal loadout and have you pay attention to what you are equipped with. Nothing too detailed yet nothing too simple.(Will edit this later.) Character: -To groups and clans, a "leader" should be able to create a badge/patch of some sort and have the option of handing it out to their teammates for identifying purposes. This will alleviate the problem of spies and bandits that infiltrate a group but if that person is patient, it will make the betrayal even sweeter. =) -While spawning in game either a normal day or a malicious ghost tactic, the player(s) that are still in the same room should receive and "Player spawning in." notification and makes all affected players to become invulnerable for a time period. They can A. High tail it out of there without threat of attacks from zombie or player if they were clearing/searching a room or B. Stick it out and wait to shoot the new spawner. Now realize this is immediate area spawns like same room/building. You as a person and player should be able to hear it but it falls upon you if you do not pay attention to the slightest of noises. This will mitigate most spawn deaths but not all. -Spawning over and over to find a "faster" run back to their body so be discouraged. Set a respawn timer of 10 seconds or more to prevent the spam of deaths just to get a good location. Deal with you death and get over it. -!Ghosting! One of the hottest topics alongside DC'ers. Here is my solution; If you have fired your weapon or been fired at in the relative area, your character should be unable to leave the game for an extended amount of time. Your character will remain vulnerable and you will be susceptible to death and perhaps will receive a notification on how you have died while trying to log back on. Now onto Ghosting, a system should be thought out where if you haven't fired or been fired at and still trying "Ghost" towards an enemy position, should you spend a certain amount of time in a server, you should not be able to join into the same server, I.E; I am in a server for 2 hours with buddies and stumble upon figures in the distance and we pin down 2 survivors in a building but they are smart. I have not fired so I leave the server to get into a better position while my friends keep them pinned, I cannot re-enter that server for 15/30 or more minutes depending on how long I've spent in it and my friends cannot ghost since they have been firing at the survivors. There will be no "true" way around ghosting in my opinion. V1 Reminder! This will be a post that I will follow as best as I can and update with new ideas regularly. Thanks for reading! - Grimm

To fix server hopping, or not to fix server hopping.
Vitzo replied to lherron's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Perhaps you didn't read the messages suggesting characters being respawned on the beach again if they change server or being killed if they change server once too often. Both fairly obvious penalties I'd have thought? I've stated in other threads on exactly the same subject, that ghosting, dc'ing during PvP or zed aggro and loot farming are all pretty crappy. But tying your toon to a single server? Respawning on the beach if you move servers. C'mon, please get real. Servers aren't all reliable and not all server hoppers are scum. Stop trying to crack nuts with sledgehammers please? KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid!!! Having the player's body linger after disconnect though, which is the most recent topic, doesn't have these problems. It also can make for fun gameplay in and of itself. Having to seek out a safe place to sleep for the night. Or seeing a player disconnect when they left view in combat and searching the area trying to find their body before it disappears. Was their improvised hiding spot good enough? -

This just happened on Chicago 16 2:22 PST, was in Stary, I think I yelled fast enough for my friends to log off but I got launched in the air dead nearly instantly, didn't hit the ground. These are cheaters though these are just people griefing the game for the sake of griefing, ruins the game for everyone. I'm honestly done with Dayz for a bit until a bit more security can be established, I strive to be a high quality and skilled player being careful and killing anyone in my sights (sniper) I am rewarded with this determination by being launched and instantly killed by what I assume is my cover 500 feet into the air. I had a AS50, Ghillie, M4A3 Holo 203, (10 SD Mags), Coyote, you name it. been Alive for about 1.5 Weeks now. I could care less if my life was finally ended by a fellow sniper or anyone else in a fight, even if it involved server hopping ghosting, not the fairest fight mind you but still bullet for bullet. But dieing to this kinda shit is just disheartening.

I've just experienced this rather annoying bug/exploit that some people have been talking about. I killed a guy near the tents in Stary. Join and disconnect messages were disabled, but kill messages were not. I checked the player list a few seconds afterwards and see that he disconnected. He reconnected a minute later and spawned back in near where I had killed him, with all his equipment. I wasn't able to get another shot at him as he had a terribly laggy connection and kept warping. He got away and left the server for good (probably to continue server hopping for loot.) Went down to check where I killed him and found his corpse, at least it didn't disappear like I've heard some complain about. This really needs to be fixed, it's no wonder some people fall victim to server ghosting, where they change servers to move before logging back in.

Seattle 71 - Admin abuse, banning, and illegal weapons: With video
butternut replied to Sister Fister's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Can I see some proof of "60 of them" please this sounds like BS to me. No but you had 7 confirmed plus about 3 more from players that we cannot confirm. Proof please? We knew where your camp was we server hopped right next to it and launched our assault. We regrouped and rearmed on our server when we went down. We eventually had to regroup after you server hopped behind us and killed us. You can server hop in cars now? Nice job admitting to ghosting there just going to quote this. -
#1. = Not a bad suggestion, a nerf to spawn rate and % chance yes, but not one tenth. #2. = Strongly disagree, wheres the logic of having more "health"? Just because they are wearing camo automatically makes this blood-thirsting apex predator stronger then an blood crazed infected civilian? If anything the strength/fitness/speed is a decent suggestion and millzoms would technically be fitter and stronger from regular training. I think the zombies are already juiced up on the virus maximizing their psyichal potential anyway - that nullifies the suggestion. #3. = Not a bad suggestion, it stops players ghosting into another server in your building you are clearing, then hop back into your server shooting you in the back of the head. Thanks man.

Rocket I love you: Going out of bounds - exploit or acceptable?
BioHazard (DayZ) replied to Publik's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think the map area should have limited borders. But I also think that there should be a fix for ghosting into other peoples camps if their forced to keep them in map limits. These two should be addressed simultaneously. -
How do you personally deal with ghosting, and overlay hacking.
MyalTerego replied to MyalTerego's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Im assuming your just trolling, but in case you assume noone ever ghosts to sneak behind you and kill you, your a fool. Its obvious in some locations, its likely you just got ganked by a server loot hopper that got lucky in others, and some locations you can tell it was just bad luck. IE. I know if it happens to you in a barracks its probably just a lucky loot hopper. IF it happens in a random house in a town that has no point to it, its likely an overlay hack / ghosting, If it happens in a cherno, elektro, or stary, your likely just unlucky. My main issue is with the, I hear them, they hear me, or I shoot or they shoot once and miss. Everything goes quiet for a minute, then bang headshot from behind or from inside the building where the entrance has been covered. -

I have had people pop out all of a sudden, and in fact my friend has logged out in cities before, and it's pretty comical when we're all logging in to play and he's like "OH GOD THERE'S PEOPLE EVERYWHERE." So first I would say, remember that not everyone who spawns in "behind you" is hacking and ghosting behind you. There is a great deal of randomness involved. Second, keep tabs on the lower left corner of the game -- it will tell you when people are d/c'ing + connecting. Third, stay alert. Just because you checked a room, treeline, or whatever, doesn't mean it's safe. This goes DOUBLE for forests, not only b/c people may log in under a tree somewhere, but because it's the FOREST and any random player could easily stumble into you. Also, in case you're being stalked -- be especially wary when you leave cities. The easiest place to pick up a mark is as they leave a city, b/c there's generally some open field you have to run through to get to the treeline, and it's really easy to spot people as they dart across (even easier when you see newbies who try and crouch walk or crawl through the open field -- you want to sprint as fast as possible). Don't assume you're safe once you hit the treeline -- the highest odds of picking up a tail are here, so sprint full speed and keep looking behind you. If you keep full speed, your pursuer will have to sprint to keep up and thus be easier to spot. -

MyalTerego posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ive been a survivor for about a month now, maybe more like 3 weeks. I have gone from getting a beat down every respawn in cherno or elektro within 30 min, to usually surviving 6-8 hours. I am usually fully geared now with alice pack, map, compass, 1911 with plenty of ammo, a full auto capable assault rifle, and the ability to heal myself and my buddies, and cook meat, each respawn before i die. So I am not a total noob anymore. I know how to deal with zeds, I can get blood bags, I can take out spawns at crashed heli's solo np. What my issue is, and I am not asking for a nerf, but how to deal with it. Currently the last 7 deaths I have had, have been from getting shot in the back at point blank range. Even in random houses that really have no real value, and aren't worth server hopping for loot. Someone hears me, I hear them, i begin searching for them, and they are conveinantly gone. Que 2 min later, they are directly behind me, no sound or sight of them approaching , pointed directly at me. Bang, time to start a new charactor that days journey is at an end. They risk absolutely nothing. Ive also got a freind, that has tested an overlay of sorts that shows players on the map, vehicles, tents, and loot piles. Hes not sure what you can do to not get caught using it, but its definately out there, and most likely requires an admins help to not get banned using it. We decided to try and investigate the rash of very coincidental deaths lately, is why he even tested it. Also I know these guys are just finding players, with the overlay, ghosting behind them, and logging back in and gunning them down. What do you do to protect against that? Have any of you come up with valid tactics? Its pretty infuriating. And I know I signed up to post this thread, its not because im a sperging neckbeard, its because I have just lurked, and learned enough, that I didnt need to ever post anything, until now. I want to enjoy this game, but getting shot in the back every death, and not even by snipers, as I am good at using cover and avoiding obvious trap spots, really sucks. What do I do, aside from rage quitting. -
Here's the idea: 15 or 20 minute global ban after D/C Basically, when you DC from a server at any point, you have to wait 15-20 minutes to Reconnect. This wouldn't affect people who get into servers to play the game, but would effectively nerf people who server hop to get loot, as it would be grossly inefficient. This would also nerf people who use ghosting as a tactical tool, since by the time one got into position on the other server, and then switched back, 40 minutes would have passed. The cons would be that it would affect people who D/C due to no fault of their own, BUT at the worst they can stretch their legs and take a break. We are really just doing them a favor :p

Mass database is great in theory but...
howichrgelazer replied to Bandit (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I think the major issue with having individual databases during this stage of development is the sheer amount of headaches it would cause pushing out updates for those servers along with what changes are made to the master. Plus all it takes is one person who doesn't know what they are doing to create an unstable server which would generate bug reports that have nothing to do with the mod itself. As for server hopping for loot, there are mechanics in the game that help curb loot spawns for people who do this. Finally, in what you call "ghosting" - it's just a matter of being aware of your surroundings. Honestly if somebody logs in, there is a delay from logging in to when they actually get control of their character. If they are in an area they normally wouldn't get to with others around, chances are, they'll be shot pretty darn fast. Besides, people run a HUGE risk if they log out in lets say Stary and log back in. I've heard of plenty of people getting waxed because they didn't log out in a better area originally. EDIT: And just to make sure I'm not sending the wrong signals, I'm not bashing your idea. I just don't believe there is a necessity to have server run databases at this time. :) -
It allows for way to many issues to arise without some real restrictions. "ghosting": players who hop servers and move into an area they couldnt get into without being shot. Normally results in a gun shot to the back of the head of another properly positioned player. server hopping for loot... Having the devs baby sit ban appeals for individual server owners. Do you guys know how degrading that is to us? I have no clue how much time the devs put into making the mass database's gameplay mechanics work, but it seems to me that its entirely not needed. Possibly just have the servers that want to be listed in the leaderboards, players and all still use them. I currently have 2 servers running and both will be running an independent database when beta allows us this option. I see no reason to have them intermingle due to the above posted reasons.

Admins don't have those powers. Insta-flaw. Because he wasn't using powers' date=' he was clearly using a hack. (My friend posted without knowing, he figured they had powers, i just told he they don't and he's like "ooh so the kids actually hacking on his own server") [hr'] I don't even know what server ghosting is nor do i care. I was respawning to get back to the "Store" seeing as i wanted to get this kid that was clearly cheating. Not to mention you're his friend so get out his hole. I want to know how you both got servers in the first place? You've been accused multiple times yet no admin has even looked into it? that seems bullshit to me.
