  1. Is the server Lingor or Chernarus, and have you added any special vehicles to your server I know some private servers have planes and tanks
  2. TL;DR: towards the end of the post. Why single shard? DayZ has persistent characters, so it has to have a persistent world. Single shard solves most problems like server-hopping, disconnecting to prevent death and other types of abuse and cheating. The problem is, an endless Skyrim-like territory will require endless server capacity, so we need to apply the 'multiple separate solar systems' idea from EVE Online to DayZ in an authentic manner. Islands: a solution to horizontal load balancing DayZ has to be set on a cluster of islands. Each island is supported by its own server instance. When the character travels from one island to another, he moves between instances, yet all characters persist on a single server simultaneously. You cannot see one island from another. To get to another island, you have to swim 1 km into the open sea in the direction of the destination island. Then you’ll be prompted to confirm that you are willing to leave your current island and enter the destination island. After a loading delay, you will appear 800m out in the open sea next to your destination island. You will approach the shore as usual by swimming. The resulting drop in body temperature will depend on what gear you have (fins, wetsuit etc). By using a boat or a helicopter, you can travel to islands that are located much farther and more importantly carry more items. Much like normal travel, you’d have to fly 1 km out into the sea, select destination and spawn next to it a few seconds later. Depending on the implied travel distance, an adequate amount of fuel is consumed by your vehicle, which is a big restriction on round-the-world travel given the scarcity of vehicles and fuel in the world. It’s a cold new day All new players are spawned on the shore (let’s say they are survivors from a sunken refugee transport running away from infested mainland) and have to make their way inland to survive. To avoid spawn camping, players are spawned across multiple islands a certain distance away from anyone who spent more than 1 hour in-game. Example: rough perimeter of Limnos is over 100 km, so that is a lot of secluded space for people to be washed ashore. ‘Lawful good’ players may police the coastline to search for newbies and repel griefers. ‘Chaotic evil’ griefers may do the exact opposite. It’s a hardcore dog-eat-dog world out there. No safe landing zones, PVP anywhere. Something to die for Hunger, thirst, cold and scarcity of medicine, fuel and ammo dominate the post-apocalyptic landscape. Single players will have to look for supplies and fight off the infected and animals. Of course, at some point they will accumulate good gear and start looking for more things to do. Carpool lane While it is entirely possible to be a lone wolf (good or evil), it is much easier to survive as a group. An organised group can do more like find enough spare parts to fix a boat and find enough fuel to travel to another island (and slaughter everyone there). Joining a team will expose players to a whole new layer of gameplay: using vehicles, raiding enemy camps, protecting own camps, clearing towns of infested, securing buildings etc. Also, ammo, fuel, water, medicine should not spawn close to each other, so it should be economically justified to form a group, split to scavenge, then regroup and exchange the findings as compared to raiding a single location altogether (power should not be in numbers alone). Goodnight, sleepy head Logging off is an equivalent of sleeping. Players who fall asleep must realise that they are vulnerable when asleep. Normally, sleeping players disappear in 30 seconds. Players, who shot a gun within past 5 minutes, will disappear in 5 minutes after logoff. Wounded/bleeding/shocked players will disappear within 10 minutes. Finders keepers Backpacks and player stuff disappear with players. Stuff placed in tents/vehicles/lockers will stay in-game. Stuff placed anywhere else will be destroyed during daily server maintenance. Tents have no locks, so stuff can be stolen by anyone. Vehicles have no boot locks so stuff can be stolen from them but they do have ignition locks, so vehicles cannot be stolen. Lockers, you guessed it, have locks. To access a locker or to start a vehicle, you need the unique key (it’s 21st century, you can’t hotwire a modern car or military chopper). The key can be picked from the (dead body of the) owner. If a key hasn’t been used for too long, it’ll despawn and spawn in the corresponding lock, granting free access to the locker/vehicle to whoever finds it first. Buildings work like huge lockers and can store vehicles and stuff. But players need to fortify the buildings before they can be locked securely, which requires gathering a lot of scrap metal, wood and other supplies. Only organised groups can afford creating and maintaining (yes, they degrade and decay over time) secure buildings. Karma police There is no karma, no bandits, no friendlies, nothing of sorts. The only way to identify a person is their unique player name. You can 'tag' people you see on a scale from 'friendlies' to 'enemies' and share these records within your group. Access to strategic information on who is roughly who in your region is huge incentive for group play. Conclusion I think it is beneficial for everyone to start thinking in the direction of a stand-alone game, because Rocket said there will be one. The community should start discussing possible game design choices (single shard? trainable skills? character specialisation?) as early as possible. TL;DR 1. DayZ standalone should be played on a single huge server like EVE Online (the most hardcore space survival sandbox simulation of all MMO games). 2. To avoid building the biggest data center in the world, players will exist over a cluster of islands, each island supported by a single server. Travel between islands requires resources. 3. End-game is geared towards group play. ... 99. Discuss.
  3. You already have to micro manage your inventory and health your survival depends on it, weapon chance to jam would be low on maintained weapons, making bullets is optional, but it gives you something else to do. You have to scavenge for parts to repair vehicles anyway so this integrates easily enough into the current system. This is just the natural evolution of a diminishing supply of weaponry and ammo that would take place anyway as society devolves. It would also make camping spawns harder, weapons much rarer, encounters become riskier for both players. It would certainly make it more challenging. Right now all you do is server hop, grab weapons and sit on a spawn/hill till you get bored...

Weird Server Log Glitch ... WTF?

You, the client, spawn medboxes when you're near a hospital. Same for backpacks. Backpacks are not items, they are "vehicles" - they are created via createVehicle. Perfectly normal loot spawn and player initialization what you're seeing there...

    Players as Zombies?

Apologies if others have talked about this idea, but I only saw a couple general references to the idea in forum searches, and nothing as specific as what I'm thinking, so here goes: What if players could be zombies? I'm not talking about a trivial "choose your role: player or zed" thing here, I have a more subtle idea... here's how I'm thinking it might work... You always start out as a normal player. You can play, get killed, etc. But infection doesn't just pose the threat of weakening you, it may turn you into a zed! Then, all your priorities change. You have a certain amount of health, but just like players you gradually get hungry. You don't pass out from injuries like players (you have extraordinary stamina), but as you get weaker, you may be forced to hop or crawl (just like the other zeds we've seen). Your attacks become entirely melee based (i.e. you may keep your inventory, but you can't use it anymore -- BUT, players that kill you can loot your inventory). You increase your "health" by feeding on downed players -- but just like cattle, these resources can be consumed... then you need to find the next one. Your melee is stronger than normal players and, of course, spreads infection much, much more easily. You could lie on the ground and play dead until an unsuspecting player checks you and with one swipe, you infect them!! (maybe not kill them, but then they need a cure, etc. -- THINK what that would do for the idea of fear of zeds and looting random corpses!) You can't use vehicles. You can be shot and killed, or killed by falling (but not by drowning -- zeds don't drown). If you are not critically shot, you lose "blood" (or fluids?) to a minimum -- but instead of dying or passing out, this governs whether you can sprint, run, walk, jump, or crawl. You can't be healed. Once crippled, you have to get along at reduced capability. You can't kill other zeds. However, sounds you make will attract other zeds to your location. (i.e. you can "alert" zeds in the area by making noise). Getting too hungry also scales you down from sprint to run, walk, jump, crawl (like losing blood) except you can regain capability from hunger by eating new people. Sprinting uses more energy than walking, etc. This is a constraint on just running forever looking for fresh players. Once you're really dead, then you get to start over as a player again. Players *might* choose to spawn and then immediately find a zed, get bitten and have more fun playing as a zed... EXCEPT that the infection rules still apply! This means that you only have the chance to turn into a zed... you can still bleed out and die before turning into one. Or the zed can kill you before you change... so respawning and turning into a zed isn't an easy or sure thing... it's just a chance. The chance of being infected and the process of turning zed is just enough to instill paranoia in people that were involved in close attacks. Were you bit? I don't know? Why am I shivering? Hey, he's shivering guys, I don't think we should risk it! shoot him! or: "you may be infected or not... here's a pistol, good luck!" -- man, the paranoia in groups would be *evil*. The other reason I like this idea is that it gives some reward for time investment in the game: even if you get infected, you get to play as a zed. How fun is that?! What do you think?
  7. So I was on a private hive with the wife the other night. We were scavenging around for about 45 minutes and came upon a field of vehicles by the factory in Cherno. Boats, on dry land. fully-repaired vehicles, fully-fueled. Definite hacker presence. We shuffle on past and continue looking for tools and supplies. Then, the hacker started getting cute. He would teleport in by people and kill them. Sidechat was lit up with the typical "ermagerd hacker" cries. Then it was our turn. He teleported in behind us, and we ran. He started firing with a suppressed M4. Couldn't hit us. He emptied two mags trying. I started talking smack in sidechat about how he can't shoot. He got madder, teleported behind us again, same shuffle. After two attempts, he finally got us. I gave him so much shit about it he tried to make us his personal bitches. I spawned, he teleported next to me. I'd run circles around him as he tried to kill me unsuccessfully, until he'd finally get me through sheer brute force of attempts. I'd spawn, he'd do it again. Some of the funnier moments: * He spawned a 4x4 and tried to run me over with it, but missed me and drove it off the pier at Cherno. * He tried to kill me with a Bizon. Given his poor marksmanship, this was HILARIOUS. * He tried to kill me with grenades. He missed twice, and with his third killed himself. After this, he turned God Mode on. * He tried unsuccessfully to kill me with a sniper rifle of some kind from about 100m. I was standing at the end of a pier (waiting for him), and just sidestepping before he'd shoot. He gave up and tossed a satchel charge on the pier to kill me. I turned him into such a laughing stock in sidechat that others joined. Nobody was mad anymore about the hacker, we were all just laughing at him and making humorous speculations about his home life. People were announcing in sidechat when they respawned, and arguing over whose turn it was to be killed by him. This went on for a good 90 minutes. I eventually had to quit out because I had work this morning and couldn't be up all night.
  8. It should be the same with vehicles, tons of them everywhere..But fuel will be worth its weight in gold...or blood. Same as weaponry, guns gun guns gun guns everywhere, on dead bodies, hanging on military zombies, shoved in outhouses, in barracks etc. Its ammo that should be rare, forcing you to thing before wasting a precious bullet to kill some unarmed asshole or that zombie that refuses to leave you alone. Also realistic inventory and handling of guns would be nice, but I'm certain thats going to happen in the stand alone.

Make cars more common & Gas rarer?

Yeah, make vehicles in good condition more common. But reduce about of gas. Like make each one have a certain amount of gas in each gas station. I doubt everyone in Chenarus had broken down cars and an infinite amount of gas.
  10. In reality, wouldn't gas be the rarer resource rather than actual vehicles? This has always bothered me. Maybe make it more "Mad Max-like"? I think it would add a whole new challenge to the game!
  11. IRL Information Name: Dima Age: 16 Location: Canada Timezone: PST (-8) Game Information IGN: killcamike Steam ID (if applicable): killcamike Desired group role (Medic, sniper, spotter, etc): Scavenger Why you would like to join? What interested you about us? (min. 4 sentences): I like playing with a team and I am very active. I like to looks for weapons and vehicles. I always follow the instructions and don't ever kill people without a reason. I'm also a team player :D What skills / perks can you offer to [GMS]?: I can help look for stuff, and I can consistently supply the camp with food/drinks. I also have a big penis.
  12. - The two camps are neutral. As mentioned you can NOT attack the other camp, when you see someone from the other camp consider him neutral. - Why would you kill people from your own camp??? They are your allies. It's a RPG server so act like you would in real-life, I wouldn't should other people but befriend them so I have help against zombies and protection. - When someone has a flashlight equiped he can't shoot you in the first place, when he has a main gun you see it on his back even with a flashlight equiped. when he only has a handgun and equiped his flashlight he can't immediatly switch to his handgun either. - The incentive to leave ur camp is to find one of the other 70 vehicles still on the map and reinforce your camp, getting fuel and other supplies. When we have more people we will implement capture/defending of cities aswell.
  13. Removal of the 50 cals has been discussed over and over, no one has ever provided a good reason for keeping then in. Alt+f4 is not a reason, vehicles are not a reason. There are other weapons much better suited to dayz within arma 2, rarity is not a solution, it's about what is appropriate for the game.

    Confession: I'm a hacker.

I hadn't seen a thread like this yet, and I really don't care if someone else already posted something similar. EDIT - Actually, I have 3-4 stories that I'd like to tell and just haven't had time to type up yet. I'll let you know ahead of time so you can reject them if they're too similar to anything that's been posted. In the past couple dayz, I've experienced: A zombie swimming through the air about 20 meters up, over my camp An invincible hacker driving a tractor at over 100 kph and running over my base and blowing up my vehicles while my whole group watched in despair A head on collision on the coastal road, me on an ATV and the other guy in a military offroad. Can you say 'ouch'? A car jacking, followed by a bicycle chase all the way across the map and ending with a reverse car jacking almost 30 minutes later. So please, let me know whether or not to write up the accounts of these stories, I would hate to bore you.
  15. Differences in Lingor Island Can place military flashlight on shoulder and use it while still wielding a weapon.(do not attempt, most servers will kick you for scripting) Can refuel a car at a gas station simply by parking near the pumps. DMR sniper rifle is zero-able. DMR loses ability to work with Night Vision. New skins. (i.e. Bandit skin back - You will lose your ghillie suit if you kill someone and log back in.) Humanity system bug - If you're at 0 long enough, you lose your backpack completely. Many more vehicles.
  16. So the admin of "US 1058" who goes by the name of "ISHOOTMONDAYS" is the poster-boy for admin abuse. Please help us get revenge on this douche bag by raiding his camp, destroying items and vehicles and generally making his life miserable. Server: US 1058 - Camp Location: 024, 002 (top of map just east of main road north from of Lopatino) Backstory: So this admin has a huge camp located at the top western part of the map (right near the border). Some friends an I had occasionally stopped by for supplies. One night a friend logged in and was killed by some of the server's members. After this happened the rest of my group decided to get revenge and go attack the camp. After they attacked and killed ONE player on the server, the admin BANNED all of them. I think he banned 4 people in under a minute. So last night, I took it upon myself to log on (I hadn't been banned because I wasn't there previously). When I joined the server the admin had just landed his helicopter at the camp. I shot him, and then came back with satchel charges and proceed to destroy all his vehicles (youtube video to come). I know he reset the server about 10 minutes after I destroyed his vehicles (including the heli). And I was also banned for this, so I have no way of knowing if I actually perma-destroyed any vehicles, but I sure hope I did. Anyways if you hate admin abusing morons like this, please do anything you can to make his life more difficult (until he bans you), thanks!
  17. So you want .50's out, but you want vehicles to stay? You still don't get it. In real life, military weapons are both more common AND more reliable than civilian weapons. In the scenario at hand, there would be lots of mil weapons out and about, because they were being employed against the infected, AND their owners got killed or infected themselves. If you are NOT trolling (doubt it), give it some thought about what YOU would see in YOUR neighborhood post infection. You want Romero weapons in a post Romero world-doesn't work. Maybe you can find someone to make a zombie mod set in '58. Short of that, the weapons in this mod, as they are (discounting duping and hacking in extra stuff) is pretty close to how it would be. The only way they would NOT be in circulation would be if the military had not been overrun and was still operating with command and control. And take you hacking comment and stick it somewhere uncomfortable, m'kay?

    Tent/Vehicle Saving?

Saving a vehicle or tent will set it & its inventory to that position, until it is moved or destroyed by another player. A server restart will re-set all vehicles/tents to their last save location + last save inventory.
  19. Alright, easy enough; noticed that the Debug window is gone in the game...for alpha, -bring it back-. The reason for this is that it supplies valuable data concerning zombie spawns, health, humanity, and other such important factors that, when something goes wrong in the game due to a glitch, can be noted down for the purposes of a detailed report which, in turn, helps -you- correct issues. By disabling it in Alpha, you're really only hurting yourself. Beta, I can understand a bit more since it's more stress-testing, and gameplay testing than bug finding (although there's still enough bugs to be found in Beta), but in Alpha it is vital for well-rounded reports. I've seen and heard of a few alarming suggestions that will hinder the sales of the game once it's on the market. Realism: Yes, this game should be as realistic as possible...the fact that it IS so realistic is part of its draw. However, there's a fine line between a healthy dose of realism, and overdoing it. The game is still a game, and people are going to be curious about it..and not everyone is a hardcore realism fanatic. The Hud: The current hud is great. It offers information that is not readily available, while being vague enough that the player has to make guesses. Some would argue the hud makes the game 'unrealistic', that it should be removed: No offense, but that is a DUMB idea. The difference between the game and real life is simple; your queue for hunger is not the sound your belly makes, but how it feels. Ditto with coming down with a cold, having an infection, a broken limb, thirst...it's all stuff we FEEL first. The game doesn't offer you a tactile sensation; we haven't gotten that far yet with technology. Instead, you have to take visual queues to be more effective. Some audio ones to enhance the visual ones is ok, but to be forced to rely -solely- on audio queues doesn't cut it...for example, say the gamer's machine is in the living room, and there's lots of noise, or he/she has been told by significant others or parents to keep the volume low. Suddenly...the audio queues can't be used. Bam, frustrated gamer. If you take away the visual elements of the HUD for the standalone, you will be limiting your market to hardcore simmers and hardcore gamers...a smaller market than average gamers by far (and by average I'm talking about those people that are a little more into games than the casuals). Their reaction will be decidedly negative with the lack of information, and thus any hopes of making a decent amount of income will be rendered moot. You will even lose what little bit of the casual market that might be interested in such an involved game. 3rd person view: I know it's an option for server admins to take that view away. I personally don't use it; I prefer 1st person mode...played the original Doom back in the day, and shooting zombies with a shotgun in 1st person mode brings back memories of good times. Some people might want it removed from the game entirely, because first person is more 'realistic'...which it isn't. In real life, unless your peripheral vision sucks or you walk around with blinders on, your field of view is 180 degrees...in this game, and every FPS game I think, your view is 90 degrees...so the arguement of 'realism' to have this removed is moot point, and keeping it as an optional thing means that those players that like 3rd person views in games can go to servers and use it, again increasing the marketability of the game. I suppose at this stage this is more of a 'what not to do' list than a to do. To be fair, I can't really contribute much to the 'to do' list because so many people have put out so many good ideas. This is my response to some of the more inane ones that seem to be being heard more than the good ones. I will, however, contribute two 'positive' suggestions: Vehicle spawns: We know people LOVE to horde vehicles...in places that would take hours to reach on foot...that are -technically- off the map...so I would like to see code that allows only a certain number of vehicles within a certain radius of one another, and that if that number is exceeded or the vehicles are taken 'off map', that they despawn and respawn in one of the nominal vehicle spawns. Also, some of the lower-end vehicles (old mountain bike, ATV), should have more plentiful spawning, seeing as neither are particularly good, and both leave you highly exposed (admittedly, the one time I was shot on the bike was my own damn fault; I rang the bell as I drove by somebody fueling up the Bus at a gas station >.< Couldn't resist >.<), and don't necessarily offer the best speed for travelling, although they're a darn sight better than being on foot. Also, if the vehicles aren't -used- within a certain time limit (say 48 hours), that they return to one of the nominal spawns. Attack Helicopter: We already have the fun transport helicopter in-game; people tend to freak out a bit when they hear it incoming. I think it would be fun to have a real attack helicopter in game...make it have a single, solitary spawn point...one of the big airfields. Make it take more fuel, consume fuel faster...and make its ammo spawns rare (starts with 0 rockets, relatively few bullets)...it would be a really awesome reward for someone, or a clan, to have fully re-armed, re-fueled, and repair one. Concidentally, add a ground-to-air missile weapon, also rare, but more common than the ammo for the helicopter, so that people can fight back against it. This suggestion is a bit of a silly one, but it would still be cool to have. Well, that's all...hope these suggestions get taken. All in all, still one of my fave games to play...even with the one battleye incident I've had (got unbanned, yay me!).

    Should tents work...?

the tents still dont work only vehicles where fixed,BUT after ever server restart vehicles have NO gas.
  21. I stopped playing like a month ago. It wasn't because of hacking or anything, I've just become bored of it all. I've gotten all the high end gear, vehicles, etc. and I know all the spots on the map, so there's not really anything new to try out. I'll still be buying the standalone when it comes out, who knows, maybe rocket will add some more to the game that will keep me interested.
  22. So, recently our server was attacked by a hacker, moving all the vehicles to a single location, we used the log to pinpoint the locations of the vehicles, np. However only myself and one other member of our team of 4 are able to actually read the logs, so I set to create an Excel spreadsheet to decode the coordinates just by pasting them into a single cell. I've so far made it so that the program takes the correct X,Y,Z coordinates from the pasted data, however I do not know the exact height of the map so that i can flip the Y cords (As they are reversed in the logs) -Anyone know the exact height? its not 15,000 but its around that number. The rest of the formulas i feel need discussing on the Excel forums, rather then on here, although if anyone wants to help out feel free to PM me. (Working with IFs, LEFT, MID, RIGHT, and CONCATENATE formulas.)

    1.7.2.6 Vehicle Problem?

i think they fucked up the setting that controls how long things stay where they are left before they reset. i left a bunch of vehicles and many full tents on a server alone for 2 days. when i came back they were gone. it should be 7 days before they de-spawn, but i think it is 1 day now by accident.
  24. Our numbers have increased quite a lot recently and we have found that we got bored of hopping around Lingor for heli crashes, transporting it back to base, rinse and repeat. We have around 30 - 40 active DayZ players so when we all gather it's normally in large numbers. With so many players not shooting at each other, camping at the base and slaughtering live stock, all was peaceful until an argument broke out between members over preference of soft drink! Seeing this, the admins and senior clan members have now split us into two groups (coke vs pepsi / red vs blue) and using the ARMA2 code, assigned us in game to actual teams where we can identify enemy from foe. Vehicles also get a logo when owned by an opposing faction. I will try to explain the playstyle our community has adopted: The chosen map and environment was voted in as Lingor. Takistan isn't that great and everyone wanted a change from Chernarus There are four groups - Red (Coke), Blue (Pepsi), Neutral (clan members who have not picked a side) and pubbies (public players). There is also the admin team which are considered neutral. We do not shoot public or unarmed players unless they are a threat. Nameplates are enabled so if you see a roaming faction, you can shout "PEPSI!" instead of "freindly!!" and see what happens. *To join the group, you can enlist on our website (link[http://www.tpoc.co.uk]) but before being recruited, you must play with a group and talk to them in teamspeak). Each faction has a base, opposing teams have a 1km no fire zone so if a red guy goes to the blue base, blue are cleared to fire, the red guy is not; although sneaking in to steal a vehicle is fine. Community events will take place, this will be in the form of a supply drop somewhere on the map, a demolition derby or taking on the admin team who are transporting high value cargo across the map (ambush scenario). Watch out for the MOTD for more information about when these events will take place. Red and Blue teams can call a temporary cease fire to have a chemlight / torch rave. Senior community members meet once or twice a week to discuss activities, problems among the group etc so we can maximise our members enjoyment of the game. Because we are participating as per the rules, anyone breaking these rules will be banned for 2 weeks (faction players only) Here is a quick list of the great things about our servers: No ghosting as it's a private hive. Script kiddies (or hackers, but that's being too generous) are swiftly taken care of by vigilant admins. Global ban list in place from other community servers. Automatic kick and ban for common hacks. Red vs Blue community play style. Server gets reset every 6 hours (0200, 0800, 1400, 2000) to keep it running smooth. We are currently considering reducing the amount of times the server resets though. 25. So we found the Ural truck on the rooftop of the hotel in Cherno with the helo. We were able to land on the roof, get in the cab of the truck, and start the engine, but it needed tires. We destroyed it with the chopper machine guns, but it respawned back onto the roof of the hotel upon server restart. We decided to drive it off the roof. We collected all the parts needed and drove ramming speed off the side of the building. Unfortunately, the truck somehow floated up back to the rooftop and became high centered on the railing. My guess is a hacker placed the vehicle there as alot of other vehicles are missing on the map and server. Is there any way to get this thing down or have it respawn in its original location? Also, since so many vehicles are missing, is there a master reset? Server US1534
