Yeah, I hope they have either new or arma3 animations. The arma2 options are quite... Quite terrible lol. Some of them anyway. That running animation is yuck. And to be honest, in dayZ, I'd rather not look like I'm moving around like a soldier. But I do hope we get that last stand feature where you lie on your back. That's really cool and looks useful! Another set of animations I'd like to see implemented is limping when low on health. Right now, you run around like you're on speed, even when you're close to death. Doesn't seem right.

Don't even make third-person an option for DayZ standalone
iashford replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Yeah... I don't wanna be forced to play in first person (cause apparently your way is the only way), especially when I know third person was once available. A lot of people, including me, would stop playing and that's why it'll never happen. If the game started off as first person, and only first person, then you might've stood a chance. Unfortunately you don't. Keep it a server side option. PS, all you people wanting first person only? What would be your argument if people started saying they wanted third person only? Pretty sure you'd come to the inevitable decision saying 'why not just make it a server side option?'. -
What stages of StandAlone would you set the Outbreak in?
iashford posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Now I'm not sure if this has been ever discussed, but I'm genuinely interested in what kind of setting people mostly like? Initial outbreak : The initial outbreak is obviously within the first week or so where it has become out of control. To me, this means: - Supplies would be plentiful (Loads of household weapons, food, clothing, etc) - Environments (buildings, etc) will be relatively clean and in their normal structure - Electricity still running in some areas, trains still operational etc. - Avatars still dressed and looking Normal - Military Presence is high (i.e military blockades, military camps set up in large areas, helicopters flying over, dropping off supplies, etc) - Zombies look fresh - Vehicles are plentiful - Fresh bodies everywhere - If possible, NPC's inside barricaded houses telling you to go away, or seeing them getting ravaged to death Early Months: The early months of an outbreak would still have a hopeful looking setting, despite being out of control. Think season 1/2 of the walking dead and the walking dead game: - Supplies made less available, but things such a civilian clothing and household weapons are still plentiful - Environments starting to look more run down with broken windows, crashed cars, etc. However, a lot of remote areas still looking fairly untouched, like farms, small towns etc. - Electricity very rarely works, and if it does, only in random areas and flickering. - Avatars still dressed in normal civilian clothes, but looking a little haggard. - Military Presence is low (i.e overrun military blockades with dead army corpses, military camps have less supplies, less helicopters flying over, less supply drops, etc) - Still a lot of fresh zombies, but a few rotten ones shambling around - Fair amount of vehicles, but with parts taken out A year or so after outbreak: This is a year+ after the initial outbreak, and the hopeful setting is almost gone. Think season 3 of the walking dead, or the 2 episodes of the walking dead game: - Supplies are far less available. Difficult to find new clothing, weapons, food, etc. - Environments are close to run down, loads of houses boarded up, rubble everywhere etc. Very few remote places look untouched. - Electricity is completely gone - Avatars are dressed in civilian gear, but extremely haggard looking (i.e torn clothes, etc). - Military Presence rare. Dilapidated military blockades, military camps are overrun with little to no supplies, barely any helicopters flying around, no supply drops - Less fresh zombies, mainly rotten ones - Less vehicles with most parts gone Years after outbreak, the world has collapsed: This is after all hope has gone and the world is now overrun. This is 'The Road' sort of setting: - Supplies are extremely rare - Environments are completely run down, buildings falling apart, no where looks 'nice and safe'. Very bleak and depressing. - Electricity is completely gone - Avatars are dressed in makeshift clothes, very homeless looking - No military presence. Everything where the military use to be is picked clean. - Mainly rotten zombies - Extremely rare vehicles with parts taken out, and made rare to find. Personally my favourite setting is 'A year or so after the outbreak'. Everything looks overrun bar a few areas, military presence is still there but made rare, people dressed normally but war-torn looking. I like the road kind of setting, but I still prefer the game to look like everything still could be inhabitable. -
Where will you take a dump in the Standalone?

Defining the Setting: How atmospheric changes can improve DayZ
iashford replied to Zoring's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I wish DayZ standalone would have the same setting as the walking dead/the walking dead game... I don't mean the cartoony art style of course, I mean very saturated, colourful environments mixed with very bleak, gritty scenes (carnage everywhere, rubble, destroyed buildings, war-torn people etc) then Going into the forest and finding a farm that looks untouched, serene and nice, etc. I don't know, I've just always like that look the most, as apposed to the uber bleak, depressing visuals of something like 'The Road'. I guess the setting I prefer is more suited to the initial stages of an outbreak/apocalypse, whereas 'The Road' style is more suited for 10 years after the world ended. Obviously there can always be a blend. Once you lose blood, the world gets less saturated, more grainy, black and white etc. making things a lot more bleak. You can have both with just the change of visual filters. -

Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
iashford replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
I hope that's not the only female hairstyle we get. Buns are stupid! Also, will things such as boots overlap/tuck into the jeans? I hate games where the boots go UNDER the pants... Defeats the appearance of boots!! Looks amazing tho, can wait to see the new lighting get added in when arma3 is released. Also, I hope we get a saturation filter added into the video options. After playing the walking dead, I love the visual style of a saturated, colourful environment with gore and graphic scenes. -
What clothing will YOU wear???
iashford replied to m.w. vindicator's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I hope we get lots of outfit choices. I wanna wear tan pants, military boots, a tank top and an unzipped hoodie. If not, a bunny costume like something to this effect -
I'm sorry to hear about all the stress related issues. It's Christmas, it should be a time of family and happiness. So try and not get yourself anymore worked up. Take the time to relax and enjoy being home. But in saying that, there are lots of competent ways for situations like this to be resolved. Hiring a PR guy/department would help a great deal. Not making any announcements until you know that you can 100% follow through. I'm not saying that we need screenshots, and updates every week, etc. but just don't say anything until you know for sure. Trust me, people are hanging about for this game. I understand the pressure, but once there's actually some solid news/updates, people will be back. As long as you provide a quality, loved product, people will come. Whether new or old. So stop putting unnecessary pressure on yourself, we'll all be here waiting. This is DayZ for christ's sake lol, you're the first - and currently the only good one of its kind. Your statistics and forums only show how much support you and your game receive. Just learn from this situation. It'll make any future similar issues much easier to deal with, for both you and the players. Take a chill pill, relax, you'll be fine. We'll all be happy in the end.

I hope for at least face, hair and skin tone customisation. Maybe beards if it's not merged with faces. All I hope is that the female models don't have the slicked back buns or 'short' bald hairstyles. I wanna see ponytails, messy plaits, relatively long hair over one shoulder, side braids, etc. Same goes for the men. I don't wanna see just short hair like in arma (I get that it's that way cause its a military game) cause its too plain and repetitive. I would just like to see a large variety of options. You know, we should start a thread on what kind of clothing and appearance options we'd like to see.

For trivial stuff, I believe the game should have some sort of advantages that aren't very game changing, but are implemented to feel organic and natural. For example, repairing your first car will take a slight bit longer then it would if you were to repair a second or third car. Applying a bandage or a blood pack will take a bit longer then applying your first bandage/blood pack. Stamina should deplete faster if your character is not kept in good shape. There shouldn't be classes, and there shouldn't be any limits to what someone can do that another person can't. Anything that has an 'upgrade system' so to speak, should not affect the way the world works, and how PvP plays out, because then the game becomes to advantageous for people and breaks balance. A lot of the skill should come from the player and their experience. For example, if you have chicken meat and you don't cook it long enough (cooking time is controlled by player), you risk getting food poisoning. If you use a degraded item (wood, pick axe, etc) to make a splint for your broken leg, then the chance of that splint breaking is higher. A lot of the skill shouldn't necessarily be applied to your character, but to you as a player. Keep the character 'upgrade system' to trivial, yet organic things like bandage application, and make everything else, like player tracking, recognising cooked meat, etc. harder so people learn from experience. I don't mind being able to have more medical experience then other players, but don't make me limited to a 'doctor' and certainly don't make it break the balance and flow of the game. I should have to work towards getting better medical skills

If by 'more engaged with their environment' you mean we are able to climb walls and such, then I'll be exceptionally happy. Just don't forget about player interaction either, the thought of hoisting up a partner to a higher obstacle to gain access to a new area excites me. It's great to hear that we'll be able to customise shoes, hats, pants and torso separately, its definitely a great step towards being personally distinguished. I just hope that there's a fair amount of options, and the character customisation is detailed enough. As in choosing hair, face and skin tone (Or even just face and hair) separately. Basic, but efficient and gets the job done. Is there any word on how character creation will play out, or is that still under development?

Bring back the debug menu! or at least another way to find out my humanity!
iashford replied to elf cakes's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think the best way to show that you are a bandit is to have your skin colour become more sallow and sickly looking, maybe even more additional cuts and bruises, red eyes like you haven't slept in a while, etc. I hate the debug menu, I'm with rocket. Visuals tell a better story, as long as its done right. If you have good humanity, obviously your skin stays healthy. I am really not a fan of changing the foundation of the skin, like making your head totally different. Just sticking to enhancing (or dehancing in this case) your character - to me - is the best way to go. -
Devblog details on engine architecture for DayZ
iashford replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
While Saints Row customisation WOULD be awesome, sticking with the options we have now is not. Being able to choose your skin colour, assortment of faces, hairstyles/hats and glasses is enough for me. We don't need anything too fancy in a game that has perma-death, that could be minutes after spawn, but we need at least 4 pivotal options that allow us to make unique characters: Gender, Skin Colour, Face Shapes and Hairstyle/Hats. It'd be great to be able to choose the hair or/and hat colour, but not completely necessary. -
In world war Z, zombies would freeze then defrost when the tempreture wasn't so high. I could imagine zombies slugging around in clear snow weather, then having frozen bodies in a snow storm

Concerned about Standalone Interiors
iashford replied to MrBlick (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I was under the impression that zombies would be slowed down to something between a shamble and a run (even having variations of zombies, some fast, some slow), but their pace wouldn't slow down indoors, and there'd be far more zombies spawning at once. I mean, we still can't have zombies running the same speed as us, then having MORE annoying advantages. -
You want some more progress screenshots of DayZ Standalone?
iashford replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Yes of course you are right, however I didn't bring up 'the fact it's a mod' purely because the poster I was replying to was under a different impression on how games work. I was using arma2 as an example, but my point/knowledge was for games in general. We are obviously both right, but my post was a more specific response in why games can have more detail and still be open world, not just dayZ. My post is still valid, and my point about static meshes not being performance heavy, and sandbox games rendering only certain locations at a time is still true. -
I think a push animation with one hand for opening and closing doors would be nice as well. I do agree, we need more animations that show what we and other players are actually doing. In addition to this, not necessarily the same, but along the same line of animations, I would like to suggest: Having your normal-paced animations until under 5.5k blood, then you look slightly injured and move at a 20% slower pace. After being lower then 3k blood, you have heavy-limping/injured animations and move 50% slower then normal pace. I don't like how in current mod, being injured only causes your screen to go fuzzy, with no real implications on mobility. Realistically, people who are severely injured would visually show it, not to mention it could garner sympathy for an injured character if they are about to be shot. Also, it'd be interesting if they had animations that actually look like you're crawling around with a broken leg. Along with that, Id like to see animations that show fluidity, as in actually opening a car door and getting in. Actually mounting the ladder and climbing off it etc.

Just so you know, games (especially open world) never render the environment till you get close. It's the little tricks and illusions all games play, just so it looks like you're rendering the world at once, but it's actually rendering as you go. Not to mention, things such as chairs, tables, etc. are all static meshes, so they generally don't hinder performance, if any. The only reason why the current map lag so much is because of the zombie parts (like rocket has wxplained before), trees (as they are not static, they can be toppled over), and buildings (they can be bombed to destruction). Things such as rubble and trash, if made as static meshes, won't hinder performance very much at all -
Suggestions for the DayZ standalone - thinking outside of the limitations of an Arma 2 mod.
iashford replied to ruarz's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think there needs to be more cooperation incentives, as other people have pointed out. Here's a few of mine (I've suggested them somewhere in the forum, but here I go again): - An injury system that visibly shows you have sustained a lot of damage and you need health. For example, limping and moving 50% slower. This will make zombies more dangerous when you agro them. In addition to limping, I suggest a shoulder hug that one player can offer another injured player to help them move considerably faster. Resident Evil Outbreak had this system, and it worked well. Shoulder hugging should also work on people who have a broken leg to help them move faster. Shoulder hugging should tucker out the hugger more, so they become thirsty quicker. - I'm a firm believer that climbing walls should be available to players. That mod for arma2 that allows you to climb over walls should be implemented, but should have a longer climb-time when vaulting over. In addition to this, players should be able to boost another player up a high wall/onto a balcony. Imagine the schools entrances are all barricaded, and the only way to enter the building is to boost your friend up onto the balcony. Also, to add a few non-cooperative suggestions, I'd like to see a 'hop/jump' ability. Nothing like what's in your casual arcadey game, but something like the vault that's already in arma2, except this helps you clear gaps. I like the thought of jumping from one roof to a close-neighbouring roof. -
I hope they transfer the swimming and ocean mechanics from arma3. Would be quite fun to be swimming around for loot in downed aircrafts/ships, just to have a random zombie lurking around in the wreckage

New Standalone Screenshots released
iashford replied to mattlightfoot's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Looks great for alpha-modelled interiors. My only suggestions in the architecture and furniture are so bear and basic. There's no furniture or design to the houses that make you think that someone once lived there. Now I know people are asking for more messy/bloodstained/decrepit interiors, but I also would like to see curtains half hanging off windows, windows and doors boarded up, beds messy, couches used as barricades etc. As it is, they just look like hollow shells with a few pieces of furniture lazily thrown in there to help people recognise it as a house. Again, I'm positive you guys know this and will more then likely build on this, so I have no doubts it'll be amazing when we finally get it. Also, I'm pro-jumping thru the windows idea -
WarZ looks horrible. On paper, sounds awesome (so does anything when you're toying with people's imaginations) but the execution is less then average at best. The developers are so disingenuous, constantly lying, and clearly has not been in development long at all. It's obviously a modded War Inc. and it looks even more scammy since they're allowing people to buy into pre-alpha at such high prices. They're trying to scam money out of people before it flops badcore. I don't need to see any screenies or footage of dayZ, because I've played the mod. I know what they're aiming for, and I know it's in a developers hands who know what the players want an actually listen to them. Sure, I have my concerns, but I at least have an idea of what to expect. DayZ is very reputable don't forget, and it can only get better and better from what we have all seen and played. WarZ was a different story, which was claiming all these things, refused to show any evidence of its work bar a few staged and photoshopped screenies, then continued to lie to people. Then, brought out extremely underwhelming footage that clearly is a slap dash, rushed job to bank on dayZ's success. Don't get me wrong, I HOPE it's good, but I won't hold my breath. I'm just happy the limitations surrounding dayZ only being a mod have been removed, so now the sky is the limit. If dayZ flops, oh well, but the better game will always win

All it needs is a hairstyle, hair colour and face selector, then we are good
