Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
maddogx replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
From what we've been told they are going to be progressively adding new features for the foreseeable future, so the game is unlikely to follow the usual "alpha -> beta -> RC -> final" sequence. If you insist on labeling it: while they are still adding features it would (strictly speaking) be in alpha, no matter what anyone calls it. Once there is a feature freeze (if ever) and they start focussing exclusively on bug fixes and other issues, it would move into beta. -
Played a while last night - definitely still seeing the graphical glitches, though not as bad as before. HOWEVER: repeated flushing seems to get rid of them semi-permanently. For those of you who don't know the trick: First, press and release Shift + "NUMPAD MINUS" Then type in F L U S H. The screen will go black for a second or two (perhaps more, depending on your system). After doing this two or three times, the graphical glitches go away, at least temporarily.

Yes, it is. Some issues with the game, such as the Alt+F4 problem. are engine limitations - these cannot be easily fixed, especially not by a mod. They would need to make some pretty deep changes in the engine, which BIS is probably reluctant to do, as it would affect all of Arma2, not just DayZ. The potential for breaking things as a result would be high. Moving DayZ to a standalone client is exactly what needs to be done in order to get these things fixed. Your logic is backwards. Then wait until it is out of alpha.

I imagine BI will give him a lot of leeway - they are, after all, a rather small and independent dev studio themselves. Also, since they're going with the Minecraft release strategy, he/they will have more than enough freedom to try things out and tweak them later based on community feedback. That's the beauty of it. As for all the speculation on the engine, I'm pretty sure the recent Ars Technica article confirmed that it will be RV4 (the Arma3 engine). It makes sense too, since licensing a different engine (like CE3) costs money, not to mention the work of porting assets and training the devs to use it. Developing a completely new engine from scratch isn't going to happen either, mainly because it would take ages (thus costing even more money). Nope, not gonna happen. The only other remote possibility I could see happening, aside from the obvious RV4, would be the Carrier Command engine. But even that is unlikely.

You are obviously misinformed about the Minecraft model - you only pay for the game once, not multiple times. What you pay simply depends on how early you buy it.

care to share your sources ? cuz everyday we got a new player record... http://stats.six-updater.net/history_month Dropping in population. Sure...

As always, the hacking/griefing situation is just going to keep escalating. Nothing anyone can really do about it either, since anti-cheat measures will always be a step behind. (Not to mention that Arma2 is ridiculously vulnerable to hacking.) Especially with the mass global bans that occurred recently, some of the more butthurt script kiddies will be out to prove that they can't be beaten. Forum threads like this one only serve to prove them right.

The topic of realism and player killing
maddogx replied to fml's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What's hard to grasp is the point you're trying to make. You're essentially complaining that people aren't behaving the way you expect them to behave. So... what? Human behaviour is what it is. If people want to kill you for sport' date=' that sucks, but it's also life. Calling this behaviour "unrealistic" because you saw people acting differently on a TV show is not going to make people act differently in game, but it seems this is exactly what you are trying to achieve. ZedsDeadBaby is accusing you of wanting everyone to play like you because that's basically how you're coming across. [/quote'] Thats not what I am trying to "achieve". Its an example that you all can relate to because you've seen it before. In real life would you walk shoot the first person you see? That is not how I am coming across at all. You guys are just so brainwashed and biased that its what you guys want to believe, so you can feel superior or like your are playing the game "the right way" The mentality here is "I live and he dies so I win and I am smarter" "Oh look at this guy wanting to team up, he must suck. I think he sucks therefore a. He is a carebear b. He wants everyone to hold hands and bandits to be beacons of light so everyone knows they are coming for a mile away. okay i really did just gave up mid post im done forever bye kiddos. all I request is that you not enforce your own agenda on it and try to realize rockets goal. Have you guys even watch rockets e3 interview in its entirety? Of course not. You dont even have to reply to this post with a lie. We already know. It shows. Have a good day everybody. You seem to be mistaking me for someone who murders everyone else on sight. Stop getting so upset. It shows. -
Oh yeah, I forgot about that... Well then, perhaps 100 player servers aren't that far off after all. Perhaps a couple of adventurous admins would consider it.

To Rocket & the “Hardcore” crowd
maddogx replied to RJ Macready's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yup. I'm seeing a pattern there... -
Arma2 admins tend to shy away from making 100+ player servers because these have been quite unstable in the past. Also, more players = more zombies = higher bandwidth and processing requirements. 100 players may still be a little too high for the average server, but I think increasing to 60 or 65 would work in most cases. On the other hand, the net code has been greatly improved recently, so perhaps larger player numbers would work after all...

Anyone else find zombies completely trivial?
maddogx replied to Sykotron's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Melee kills are indeed too stealthy and easy at the moment. -
I feel so alone... but yet, I don't?
maddogx replied to Remix (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yup, although I usually play with two other people, so I don't feel quite so alone. Seeing another (unknown) player is still always exciting though, especially if they haven't seen you. I've stalked people for hours, just to see what they get up to. :D Btw. I would recommend using direct chat to try and talk to people. So far, everyone I've conversed with via voice chat has been friendly and not tried to kill me. Though admittedly, I don't stick around for long enough to see if they'll betray me. -
"km^2" is for people who don't know how to write km². :D

One square meter is one square meter. One hundred quare meters is not 100x100 = 10,000 square meters.
-
The problem is being worked on.
-
Good questions. Presumably the development will shift completely to Arma3 (it's called Arma btw., not "Armor"), so as not to split the focus. Much tears will be had by all, of course.

WaxMan is right. 225km² = 15 x 15km. Chernarus is not 225km wide or high.

The topic of realism and player killing

Yes. You know how in walking dead peope's loyalties to each other are constantly put to the test' date=' up to and including killing each other just for a chance at surviving a little longer? Do you remember when they encounter other survivors whose intentions they are unsure of? You know how those are the most compelling parts of the story, those tense moments when you as the reader/watcher are also unaware of what's going to happen? Yes. Do you remember the part in 28 Days Later when they finally arrive at the military base and supposed safety, only to realize that the men inside cannot be trusted in any way? They grow suspicious, and then fearful, finally culminating in sexual violence and the iconic scene in the movie which is not zombie-on-human but human-on-human violence. Do you get it? That a central theme there is that humans in this situation would be every bit as dangerous, savage and unpredictable as the infected? That's, like, a central theme to the entire film and something rocket has captured incredibly well in just a short period of time. Did you read The Road? Did you get to the parts where people eat each other to survive? Did you get to the parts where they encountered other humans and were so afraid that at one point they inadvertantly murder a man in fear for their own safety? Remember? Once again we see the theme of uncertainty, and inhumanity that results form the struggle for survival and fear for ones wellbeing. Okay, so what? Does everyone have to play the game exactly like you in order for you to enjoy it? Why not find people who think like you, group up with them, set some goals and begin accomplishing them. The other people in the game, the ones who are completely free to play the game they want to play, will make things more interesting for you and your friends in a lot of ways. Let them. It's not a bad thing if you have to play strategically or think about your own personal safety before you go wandering off into the wilderness. There's not? ZedsDeadBaby nails it in every single paragraph. Kudos. -
Arma2 doesn't natively support melee weapons, so the ones we have now are really just rifles with weird stats and hatchet/crowbar skins. They are also far from finished, so give rocket some time to work out the kinks and I'm sure they'll be more fun/useful.

Spawning Without a Weapon: All of My Butthurt

- Find empty cans. Throw cans to lure zombies away from buildings. - Try going into Cherno or Elektro. There are weapons there... and what do you have to lose by trying? - You may not be faster than zombies, but you can lose them. Run around corners, through tunnels etc.
