[How To] ArmA 2: CO + Steam Tracking and Overlay with Beta Patch
castun66 replied to xcryonic's topic in New Player Discussion
Here's the funny thing, I've used this method a couple times and it's worked great, the first time lasted for a couple weeks at least. But both times now, it suddenly stops working, even though I haven't CHANGED ANYTHING. When I go to launch the game through Steam, it just crashes right after the small window pops up with the row of checkboxes. I've even tried to verify the game cache, reinstall DayZ and the Beta, and try running the games before following the steps again, and it still just crashes. I've really no idea why it always stops working. -
Teleporting back to a previous position
castun66 replied to The Manager's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
When my buddy had it happen to him that couple of times, he was visiting family and on a crappy DSL connection. His debug monitor kept disappearing and coming back, and he also would suffer from the delayed eating effects. When together with me and a buddy, he would ask us why we were standing still when in reality we were on the move a hundred meters away. It's definitely related to being out of sync with the server, likely caused by a bad connection or somesuch. I would say if your debug monitor disappears or you notice the delay with eating and drinking, best bet is probably to just quit and come back in. It usually helps hold off the problem. -
n-sec 'logout-timer' + n-sec 'login-freeze'

I've heard that the potential locations are randomized between servers, although there is a likelihood that certain locations are the same on some servers. I also think that each new version changes which ones are available to each server when the mission file is updated. Or at least that's what I've heard.

If he was just standing there with his pistol out, not moving, with zombies around him that weren't attacking him, I'd wager it was just another case of a glitches corpse. It happens sometimes.

How long do people live? Not noobs, I mean the average pro.

I was 31 days old before I got killed last week, by a guy who stumbled upon me from behind at night when I was providing overwatch for a friend at Stary Sobor military tents. Had camo & a M249, and an MP5SD in my large Coyote pack for stealthy zombie killing. Funny thing was, after a day with a new char, I was already kitted out nearly as good as I was when I died, even got NVGs. No M249 yet though, although I did find the FN FAL NV. Ended up dropping that because I only had 1 clip for it. My average before that was usually 3-5 days, but now I've got a good feel for staying out of trouble most of the time. Hoping to break that record of mine! :) -
The ssshhhh sound could have came from the flare when it was lit and thrown. And if you didn't see anyone, it was probably a player with the invisible character bug.

I have a story of my own, and one that I saw with my very own eyes. It's not particularly weird or creepy, but it's still....a bit odd. A buddy and I were at Stary Sobor, and I was down checking out the military tents while he was up on the hill providing overwatch. After I finished up, I met up with him up on the hill, when he noticed a survivor on the distant SW hillside. What was odd was that he was out a bit from the treeline there, just standing up there out in the open with a Winchester in hand. The weapon was lowered, and he was basically just standing there not moving. At first we thought he was one of the glitched corpses you occasionally come across that are still standing up, except they always seem to have their pistol out and they're not moving. We watched him for a couple minutes, and the only other thing we noticed was that he was in the idle animation, where he'd slowly shift weight back and forth to different legs and move the weapon a bit. I don't know if you stand still long enough with your weapon lowered if it will do that automatically or not, never tried. About that time we also noticed there was another survivor in the same area, a bit more to the left / more to the south of us, a good couple hundred feet away or so near where the next treeline starts. He was prone and alternating between looking down at town through his binoculars and sniper scope. We contemplated me trying to run all the way around town to try and flank them to see if they had anything worth taking while my buddy covered me, but then the guy that was prone got up and ran off over the hill into the distance, the idle survivor still just standing there. We decided to just leave them alone. We had no idea if they were even together or not. The idea crossed our mind was that maybe he was just playing decoy or something with him just standing up there out in the open. If the sniper was paying any attention to our area, it would have worked as we wouldn't have seen it coming, having directed all our attention to the standing guy all alone. Maybe it was his 'Mysterious Stranger?'

I KNOW you're an exploiter if you disagree

If the problem isn't fixed properly, people will still take advantage of it one way or another. Being temporarily locked out of a server you disconnected from, regardless of reason, is a good start, but it's not perfect either. -

Dying in DayZ doesn't necessarily mean you lose all your stuff, if you are lucky & fortunate enough to have a stashed tent or vehicle somewhere. I fail to see why you're trying to apply some arbitrary measure to suit your needs. -

FFS, MMO implies....Massively Multiplayer Online. Just because it doesn't fit into one of the already established game styles doesn't mean it can't be a type of MMO just because you say so. -

EVE online definitely has some of the strictest anti d/c mechanics in place, and it does just fine, as do the other myriad of MMO games. It doesn't stop people from complaining about it, but it also doesn't stop people from enjoying the game either. My point is, players have to deal with the risk if they want to play. "What if" scenarios have no meaning, because the mechanics will be applied to everyone once implemented regardless, no special exceptions or double standards. -
Back sometime in May when i first started playing i spawned as a bird in the debug forest. It was hard to control lol Yeah, I believe that was tied to a bug (or cheat / exploit) in a previous version of DayZ that's since been fixed.

Logout timers would fix most issues, although a small login freeze for maybe 5-10 seconds would be better. I'd even support a short temp-ban from the server you disconnect from to combat those who server ghost to get behind people. The logout timer itself though should be a number one priority though. And as mentioned before, almost any MMO has them to prevent just quitting out to avoid death. -
How about the thread about the fabled walkie-talkie radio where if you pick it up you hear a numbers station that spews out map coordinates of the deer stands?
-
Too bad, so sad. I'm sorry if you feel that you being inconvenienced is more important than the rest of the community to help stop the exploiters and cheaters. Play on a different server maybe?

I spawned in the debug wilderness yesterday after logging in after wearing a ghillie suit for the first time. I ran for an hour and a half SE and nothing. I am about to die of hunger and would really like it if I didn't lose my toon. Will this update fix my save? or will it just prevent it from happening again? Thank you Sir. (Yes' date=' all my files have been updated) [/quote'] Find and join the Canada 2 server. For some reason, this is one of the known servers that puts you in the debug forest instead, which is only about 5 minutes from a town on the western edge of the map. I did this trick when I kept spawning in the barren wilderness and it worked great.

Teleporting back to a previous position
castun66 replied to The Manager's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I haven't ever experienced it, but my friend suddenly had it happen to him twice last night, on two separate servers. Both instances teleported him near a helicopter crash site we had previously checked. The first time it happened was a good 15 minutes later after we checked it (which got him killed in the process too because there ended up being another group there by then) and the 2nd time it was only about 5 minutes later or so. -
:D Awesome.

For what, hitting invisible targets that are out in the fog? :)
-
Essentially, yes, although the MP5SD doesn't use subsonic ammo, they share ammo with the standard MP5. The integrated suppressor on the SD version actually contains the gas expansion and prevents the bullet from reaching supersonic speed in the first place, from what I understand. So in reality the 2 variations on those shouldn't have separate mags.

Trying out a few servers in a row to find the best one that suites you isn't even what I would consider server hopping anyway. In these cases I feel it would only be a slight inconvenience to have to wait a few extra seconds to quit. There won't be a solution that is 100% perfect and going to please everyone TBH.
