You can get 'vanilla' private hives ('vanilla' means there are no customisations), so your distinction is incorrect. You want to know how to tell the difference between private hive and the public hive. DC (DayZ Commander) has a filter called 'hide unofficial' which will display only public hive servers. So it's easy to list public hive servers. Unfortunately there is no filter for 'hide official', so when looking for private hive servers the list is mixed. You need to know: · Public hive servers usually have a letter and number designation (Eg. US321) · Private hives have a cloud and cross symbol in front of them. If you're using the in-game server filters, do yourself a favour and try DayZ Commander instead.

I take it you have found a G36A or G36K. They are the only legit guns in DayZ with a dual sight. It's set to the zoomed sight by default, and you're supposed to just be able to press the numpad / key to change to the close-combat red-dot sight on top (which has no zoom). However, when I found a G36K the other day, it took a log-out/log-in or a server restart before it worked. It just started working by itself the next time I played on the server, whereas in the session that I found the gun, I tried everything to get it to function, and it just wouldn't. You can bind the action to another key - it's labelled something like 'combat optics' in the controls dialogue. Great gun - can't wait to kill someone with it. So far I've just been practising on AI bots. Some people think the G36's are quite inaccurate, but I think the dual scope is worth it though.

RIP GB Wireworld Vanilla DayZ Server - It was a lot of fun!

Looks like running the DayZ beta is not pulling players onto the server like it used to! With the player numbers so low, has anyone thought about adding AI patrols onto the server? I've been trying out some other servers, and I quite like the AI... · They are crap at fighting properly, but they can be dangerous if they get line of sight and you're in the open, or if they catch you by surprise. · When you hear them firing nearby, you don't know whether it's players or not; they add a little tension. · It's an additional, interesting way to obtain some military gear. · They only spawn near players, and then they go on patrol. The map is updated every couple of minutes with the patrol's markers, so you can tell very, very roughly where players are on the map, which is a good thing when numbers are low and you're wondering which quadrant of the map you should look for players in. I've no idea how hard it is to implement, or whether it would actually help draw players to the server. -
Why are there still OFFICIAL servers if the problem is so bad?
Dayzo replied to hogscraper's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Most of the hackers are operating on 100 public hives, and on the badly administered private hives. Let's keep it that way... if the the public hive database was discontinued, and they lost their playground, then we might see in increase of hacking on our favourite private servers. No thanks! -
Rifles like the G36 are supposed to have dual scopes - a red dot and a ACOG. I just found a G36 K and the optics button doesn't work. I mapped it from / (NUMPAD) to another key and that didn't work either. Does anyone know why this isn't working?

Very weird... same server, same character... G36K optics working today. Maybe it needed a server restart or something. Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Tell me your stupidest death stories...

The Wireworld UK server is running v1.7.7 a few weeks before the public release. A lot of the vehicle bugs seem to have been fixed. However, one guy was putting a wheel on a vehicle the other day. It suddenly bounced 20 metres into the air and then landed on top of him. Yes, it did kill him instantly. Hilarity ensued. -
Last week I was playing on the Wireworld UK server, scouting Balota Airfield from the hill behind the ATC tower. Suddenly a player runs up and into the tower. I'm friendly, so I thought to myself, 'Well, he can take whatever he wants, and I'll wait a bit and then loot it'. However, the zombies followed him up using both the ladder and the door. He ends up on the roof, and every time he shoots, more zombies come. This guy is going to die unless I do something with my sniper. I raise my sight and... pause. I just watch quietly. The guy eventually runs out of ammo. I could see the panic in his movements as he tried to make for the ladder. Nom, nom, nom. The zombies munch and feast on his flesh right there on top of the tower. If only he wasn't wearing a 24-slot Coyote. It's mine now.

No "classic" servers running? (~1.5.X)
Dayzo replied to Powell (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
The Wireworld UK server is running v1.7.7 a few weeks earlier than the public release (see signature). This version has still got the v1.7.4 initial loadout, but loot appears to be more generous in this patch, so it's quite easy to get all the basics and a good weapons before you leave the cities without too much hard work. The zombies aggro easily, but they are also easy to lose. -
This and some other vehicle bugs appear to be fixed in v1.7.7 (see signature). However, one player on Wireworld reports that after putting a wheel on, it bounced 20m into the air, fell down, and killed him!

Dayzo replied to wireworld's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
15 players from three squads are on right at this moment, which is the minimum it takes to make things interesting. If you want to play on a top-notch almost-vanilla server, get whitelisted now. -
Make private hives come under same rules as public for abuse
Dayzo replied to dgeesio's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
You just need to do some research before you choose a private server. Servers blacklist themselves, because players are not happy and give negative feedback in the server thread. Check out my signature to put you on the right path. -
So does anyone else ever have that instant feeling of regret when they kill someone?
Dayzo replied to LeastDionysus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
On Wireworld UK I have only had eight kills in six months, concentrating on the other aspects of the game instead. Recently I became bored with all that and wanted to do more PvP, but can't bring myself to do it. Since making the decision to 'kill the next person I see', I've let 12 players run right past me. They've all seemed less geared than me, and I don't really need any more gear anyway. So I'd just be murdering to grief them, and I don't see the point. Anyway, it's great to play on a server that lets you decide how you're going to play, rather than just Shoot-On-Sight. -
It seems to be fixed in v1.7.7. However, now there seems to be a bug whereby you occasionally lose all your gear on logging out. Sigh...it never ends.

Use 'regular' or 'veteran' in your server filter if you want to avoid 'recruit' mode servers. It's worth mentioning that it only shows players/zombies when you've already had a line of sight within a certain range. It doesn't update the position once you lose line of sight, and will disappear soon after losing LoS. If you are looking for a good, nearly vanilla private-hive server with veteran settings, you could do worse than Wireworld UK. Check out my signature for player comments.

Using our teamspeak is strongly encouraged, otherwise we can't get to know each other and maintain the community. Basically, the assumption is that people who know each other will treat each other with more courtesy, and if players are able to communicate with each other then there may be less misunderstandings and arguments. It also means that solo players can easily form informal groups. I've played on private servers where, even when teamspeak was provided, no-one talked to each other. One of the things that makes Wireworld different and more fun is because it's more sociable than most other servers. However, I see that some groups/pairs are using their own teamspeak to chat on, but they open Wireworld in another tab. This means they have the 'microphone disabled' icon in our Teamspeak, but we can still open a chat or poke them. I guess it's a good compromise. Also, we have just turned side chat on in the last few days. If it is not spammed, and therefore stays on, then perhaps the expectation to use our teamspeak will be less. BTW, I still recommend to set your VON setting to zero - even though no-one is spamming side chat, sometimes sometimes someone's mic accidentally comes through. The VON setting does not affect the 'direct communication' channel. To date, no-one has been banned for not being on our teamspeak, so don't let that issue prevent your clan from joining the server.

Longest gone without seeing a player?
Dayzo replied to Imafighter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I thought that even if you manage to place them, they got deleted on server restart though? -
Great! We currently have three or four small groups/clans, and some solo players. I hope you enjoy the server. Don't be shy on TeamSpeak - everyone is very friendly.

· Ping/Lag is generally good, and it helps that Wireworld has a 35 player maximum. · No camps or vehicles off the map. If anything is left over the map boundary, then it gets deleted on server restart. · Cross hair is off. Death messages off. v1.7.7 has been ready for release for a couple of weeks. There has been some hold up at BIS or BattleEye. It could be released tomorrow, or in another two weeks. The Wireworld owner got the code early from the developers. When you join the server, even if you are not whitelisted yet and get a kick message, the other server messages in the lobby include the Teamspeak IP and password. When you join Teamspeak, there is a link to v1.7.7 in the channel description. Alternatively, you could just wait for v1.7.7 to be released officially, update it using DayZ Commander (or manually), and then get whitelisted on Wireworld. Hope to see you on the server! 200 vehicles, 24 hour daylight, starting gear, name plates, death messages. Not very close to what Falstaff was looking for!

DayZ Commander is definitely the best solution to the 'bad version' problem, and it is the easiest way to update and play DayZ. Just to clarify though, those are not servers in the install/update list. They are community-built variations of DayZ, some with customs maps. Most are quite large in file size, so I would not recommend installing any of them until I actually wanted to play. It also makes your Arma folder slightly more cluttered and confusing if you ever need to do some manual updating. The other issue is that you need to know WHY you want to play a variation. For instance, if you don't like the military weapons in the original DayZ, because you think it spoils close combat and is unrealistic, then you'd need to know which variations address that issue and how. If you think the Chenarus map is too big for Player versus Player (PvP), then you'd need to know which variation has a smaller map whilst retaining all the weapons and equipment you'd want to use. So before playing the variations, I think it is a good idea to exhaust the original DayZ mod; get to know it well and discover its flaws. By the way, DayZ v1.7.7 is just about to be released, and it looks like it could be the best version of the original DayZ for quite a long time. Back to DayZ Commander: The actual servers are listed on the 'servers' tab. You set your filters and then click 'refresh all servers'. One of the filters says 'any mod'. For just now, I would choose 'DayZ Only'. Personally I also set 'max ping' to 150, and I like to set 'survivor count' to between 10 and 35 for public servers (to avoid hackers, who generally stick to the higher population servers). Select 'hide unofficial' to only list the public hive servers. By all means give the public servers a try for a week, but remember, tents and vehicles don't transfer from server to server, only the gear that you're carrying. So if you find a vehicle, you'd want to stay on that server until you lost it. If you make a camp, you'll have to note down which server it is on, and 'server hop' when you want to get gear from your tent. When you meet a player on a public server, you really don't have any choice but to shoot on sight. And of course, when you get killed, your tent is raided, or your vehicle is stolen, you'll always be wondering if they were using a hack to find you or your camps. Some hacks are more obvious, and you may find yourself teleported to somewhere nasty. My advice to new players though, is don't waste more than a week on the public hive. Just have a go to see how bad it is, and then start looking for a private hive. They are not all equal though. For instance, only a few are close to the original vanilla DayZ - most have a load of modifications which turn the game more into Arma or Battlefield. A lot also have power-drunk, teenager admins who don't even attempt to run a balanced, fair, impartial server. When you get to the stage of looking for a private hive to play on, make sure to give WIREWORLD UK a look.

Wireworld UK is close to what you want... it's nearly a vanilla server with veteran and 3rd person; the only changes are: · AS50 and m107 removed. · 42 vehicles (default is 35). · Tents last 999 days after death (default is 3), so your camps are permanent. · Night vision chance has been increased at heli-crash sites. · Currently it's a full moon every night to encourage players to stay later in the evening. Usually it is normal cycle. · Currently side chat is on as an experiment to help solve any accusations and misunderstandings. So far players have not spammed it. The players' age range is late teens to beyond middle age. There are occasionally younger players on the server because the owner runs a gaming centre and some of the kids there play a bit of DayZ. They are under supervision though, and don't mess around any more than the adults do. The amount of players varies. Before Easter it was 20-35 (the server is capped at 35). At the moment it seems to be 8-20. We are starting a recruitment drive today, so hopefully numbers will increase again soon. Importantly, most of the regulars want to play DayZ as it was meant to be played. Players scavenge, build camps, repair vehicles and help each other, just as much banditry and PvP. Teamspeak is strongly encouraged, so we all get to know each other a bit, and on the whole it's a pretty good crowd (of course not every one gets along, but that makes for some good drama). Compared to other servers, there has been very little hacking; if there has been any, it's been subtle enough to go undetected fort the most part. Oh, and we're running v1.7.7 before anyone else, so you'd have to download our PBO package. Once 1.7.7 goes public, then we'll just be using the same files as everyone else. See my signature for the link to the official Wireworld thread. Got to Papa's Whitelisting Bonanza thread for clear instructions of how to sign up, and a fast-track whitelisting (if he's online).

Longest gone without seeing a player?
Dayzo replied to Imafighter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
On the public hive when I first started, I used to avoid high population servers due to hackers. With ten or less players, sometimes I could go a week without coming into close contact with anyone. After a long period of monotony, you usually get a good rush of adrenaline when you finally come across another player unexpectedly. However, waiting a week for a two minute fire-fight became a bit too extreme and boring. On high population servers, with 40+ players, it becomes too difficult to bother collecting gear for your tents or to repair and hide a vehicle (especially when you'll only manage to keep them for a day or two), so it becomes a bit too PvP orientated for my taste. I never really get the same rush on these servers because you always expect to bump into someone. The server I play on (WIREWORLD UK) is capped at 35 players, which I think is perfect for Chernarus. It gives you plenty of space to build camps & repair vehicles whilst still having a good chance of coming into unexpected contact with other players. Of course, finding other players in the hotspots is quite easy if you want some straight-forward PvP. -
Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?
Dayzo replied to Maloney (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I wouldn't call TS cheating. The server I play on (WIREWORLD UK) strongly encourages players to use the TS. Not only does this level the playing field, it also helps to create a server community, since we all get to know each other. I do wish there was a way that could stop dead players from passing information on to their team though. -
And a server devoid of other players?
-
lmao. Brilliant.
