Standing in the sun does restore temperature... my friend and I were freezing in the overcast and when we migrated over to another server where the sun was out our temperature began to increase relatively quickly... could be wrong but I am pretty sure that was what was happening.

At the risk of sounding like en elitist bastard I am going to have a little rant. I have been playing Operation Flashpoint and ArmA games since their inception a decade ago. What drew me to Bohemia's titles were their uncompromising and harsh mechanics, tense, butt clenching fear and uncertainty at every turn. Consequences are brutal but it's those flashes of pure, raging panic and coming out of it alive (for the fear of boredom) that made these titles so unique and appealing to me. It's obvious why nobody else makes games like this. Not only are they ridiculously resource intensive but they are risky as fuck. A lot of people like to have an experience delivered to them on a silver platter but ArmA demands you invest yourself. You aren't guaranteed a reward, but when you do get a reward it's simply unlike anything you can find anywhere else. Day Z could only ever really happen on this platform/ engine and it possess an unforgiving and brutal spirit that I believe is what makes it so appealing and compulsive. Fortunately, it's potential greatness has attracted a lot of attention and attracted many, many new players to this engine and this game. For many it has been quite a shock just how difficult it can be but for veterans and those who are willing to invest, it proves to be utterly worth it. What I am seeing is a very vocal group, some of who don't understand the concept of what an Alpha is, and others who are more used to that silver platter service I described above. Those who are ignorant of the Alpha, Beta, RC process can be forgiven. Those who are sitting at the table, smashing their cutlery into the tablecloth demanding items that aren't on the menu need to stop, turn around and leave the restaurant. You are in the wrong place. You were looking for MacDonald's. I like a Macdonald's just as much as the next guy but I wouldn't want it every day. Sometimes I want to dress up, go somewhere with a great atmosphere to wine and dine a little. It may not be to your tastes, and that's alright, but there are plenty of people who thoroughly enjoy this humble, but extremely unique and zesty meal. You can't run into the kitchen and start demanding the chef dump ketchup into everything.

Casual gaming is something that will disappear soon, I believe. Usually casual games are substandard in comparison to those products that "hardcore" gamers are expected to play. I highly suspect that as casual gamers spend more time playing games, their pallet will mature and they will begin to reject substandard products. At the moment (we can already see it changing though) this particular demographic plays the likes of Evony and Zynga games and are quite happy with these products but that is only because they aren't aware of the just as accessible and far more rewarding products that exist. When they do, they will begin to recognize their current favorites for what they are - thinly veiled billing systems. And with that the "casual gaming market" or what I like to call the "Conman's playground" will vanish. Then again there will always exist severely retarded people and with that you will always have someone offering them their thinly veiled billing systems. Hey Zynga, how you getting on over their in "Conman's playground?" getting hot in there? U Mad bro?

I totally agree in that we should help them along and not dismiss them. I don't want to change them I just want them to understand why they like the game and what makes it special. I fear, like many do, that their incessant whining will see the Foie gras brought out swimming in BBQ sauce and a side of french fries. Who knows, it might still taste awesome but it won't be Foie gras anymore and you can get the same kind of thing from the joint down the road, faster and cheaper than you can here ;).

Really like it! The concept really aids the survivor experience of the game. Obviously it needs tweaking and balance but I believe the concept has real potential. For the first time in a game, when's it's sunny, I get this strange sense of being warm and dry. I appreciate the sun more now and nights become something to really consider and prepare for. When it's raining, I 'feel' wet and cold. It's a feeling I've never had in a game before, the sense of hot and cold. It's such a strange sensation and I love it! With the addition of a few graphical aids and further the illusion of heat and cold (breath) I can really see this working well when balanced properly. I've been alive for over 2 days now and I was beginning to find the whole thing to be a bit of a cake walk (even though I am probably about to die, but only because of a bug which wouldn't let me stand up or move after being knocked unconscious by a zombie in a particularly dangerous area). I really look forward to seeing where this goes!

I personally think you should be able to just wonder the forest and find random drops of small kindling and a few logs here and there.

I hope this hasn't been suggested or being planned... if it has I apologize. I suggest, as a test during alpha at least, the removal of kill registration. During our Charlie Foxtrot tournament we removed this feature and immediately we could see a dramatically different behavior in players. Fights became much more tense as neither party knew whether or not the others were dead after an engagement. You would have to investigate your kills to make certain you got them, potentially exposing yourself. It takes the unrealistic certainty out of engagements. "I know I got him because his name popped up dead". At first I can imagine many people not really being very confident about this feature (or lack of a feature rather) but the changes are dramatic and very beneficial to the experience in terms of realism and immersion. I think it's worth a try, what do you guys think? (Again, apologies if this is planned or has already been suggested.)
-
Yeah and if you aren't sure you both may just deem is suitable to get the hell out of there rather than risk investigating or sitting around.
-
I agree, silence dead players.

The temperature effects aren't permanent. Even the worst case of the chills can be fixed... it's just that initial survivability hump. Personally I think the bigger the hump the better. It should be very difficult to survive when you first start out. It makes every day you survive and invest in bolstering your survivability that much more valuable. The idea of the game is not combat against players and zombies (even though that is possible) the driving force, the core of the concept is to survive an extremely inhospitable scenario/ landscape.
-
As I said, it does need balancing certainly :). Try grocery stores... we found two piles of wood in there the other day.

Why temperature may help bandit skin removal
hazzard65 posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Why do I think temperature will balance bandit skin removal? This isn't based on any experiences BUT in theory it should work. What do those cracker ass fuckers - our friends - bandits, like to do? Kill us. How do these less than pond scum bastards tend to do this? They camp. They set up (rat) nests around airfields and other high traffic areas and they sit, and wait for their prey to wonder into their wonderfully hilarious little traps. When a poor so-in-so wonders in, the bandit springs into action with their weapon of choice, the CZ. What do I suspect will happen now that temperature has been introduced along with all of it's behaviour effects? Well when a bandit fuck starts to camp, and his temperature starts to drop he is going to start shivering, his aim will be all over the place. He is going to catch a cold, sneezing, coughing and generally spluttering like a dog that he is. His stealth is shot due to the need to move/ coughing/ sneezing. At the very least this is going to require bandits to change their tactics to some degree. They might not be able to camp anywhere near as effectively as before.... This is of course total speculation and I could be wrong, but we will see. I personally am a survivor looking at almost two solid days alive in game and have yet to murder anyone, bandit and all BUT I welcome the change to remove skins. Involuntary skin change to determine a threat is quite frankly against the nature of this mod and against the nature of Arma. If you have trouble with it, this game demands you learn to overcome it as has been the case since June 2001. If you however feel it's unfair, you hate it, you can't get along I highly recommend you take your whiny, snivelling ass to one of the many, many games that cater to your pathetically mundane needs. -
Agreed, harder... much harder.

Why temperature may help bandit skin removal

OK so the player would need a bucket, a rope, lotion, a French poodle and a record of Goodbye Horses then locate a well. I think this is a feature worth exploring. -

Maybe you have to throw them down a well and make them rub lotion on their skin before they get the hose again in the action menu. -

LMAO! FLAYING BANDITS WITH ROCK HARD RAIN! -
I'd love to see it standardized personally. I think it would be valuable to the experience. And yes I'd imagine you could currently use the debug window to ascertain whether or not you scored a kill... but it's a debug window and I can't imagine it will be active on release.

We will see who the better players are when I send a 5.56 your way fucker. You've got some old school opflash veterans gearing up and prepping for some serious bandit hunting. I hope they introduce cannibalism... I am going to make it my mission to eat every bandit I kill.

If you see a player named Drooling Pacman shoot his ass on sight. He's like -12000 humanity or something ridiculous like that. He's a menace. I've personally seen him slaughtering noobies for fun.

Me and two friends were poking around Mogilevka when we ran into this dude named Lopinka. Boy was this guy a headache. Constantly running, shooting and generally making a lot of noise and causing us no end of hastle. Every time we thought things were finally safe again he would start running around aggravating all the zombies again. Finally he had bit off more than he could chew and the last we saw of Lapinko, alive, was him running off into the black fields with about 15 zombies on his ass. We said good riddance to bad rubbish and carried on scouting the town. About 15 minutes later we decided to head off in the direction we saw Lapinko going, in the hope we could scavange gear from his dead body. We found it and started poking around in his bag. "We got chimps coming up on us" my friend warned and dispatched them with a few winchester shots. I heard some moans "I think I can hear a zombie" *BAM!!* 15 zombies (the group that had killed Lapinko) charged out of the bushes at full pelt. "RUN!!!!!!!" I yelled as loud as I could and we all bolted like deer, straight towards the nearest enterable building and began dispatching as many as we could. I have never shat myself in a game, nor laughed so hard as I did when those f***ing zombies burst from the bushes like that. Frightening and hilarious!
