DayZ+ You were kicked off the game (BattleEye: CreateVehicle Restriction #2)
svenbreakfast posted a topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I'm playing DayZ+ on a private hive. I've picked up a couple cars I hadn't seen before in DayZ. They were both parked at spawn points, so I don't feel like they were hacked. Anyway, I get booted with this message a couple times a day. What sux is that it removes any camo I may have found, putting me back in survivor skin. Am I doing something wrong? Am I on a lame hive? Is it a DayZ+ bug? -
What's the most unrealistic thing you've ever survived?
svenbreakfast replied to colekern's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Riding down a mountain on an antique bike with a full rucksack and no helmet at 90+km/h and running square into a pine tree at the bottom. Just peddled backward a little bit and was off. -
Road flares suck so how about...
svenbreakfast replied to mtls44555's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Road flares are very useful. Big radius of illumination, attract zeds, can blind NVGs, and the bright red light even looks cool (see banner above). Been playing DayZ+ and using them way more than ever before. Flare gun could be cool, especially if it could potentially immolate a target. Road flares don't suck though, they just do what they do. Compasses, now those suck. -
Who Else Thinks 1.7.5.1 Pushes Annoyance and Survival Too Far?
svenbreakfast replied to Diz (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've recently started playing DayZ regularly again. Mainly this is because I wanted to check out DayZ+ which made a bunch of changes I'd been hoping for. I'd forgotten how much more fun shootouts are with shotguns than snipe-offs. Look. If you're not content to just horde survival necessities/bug out, or sit in a high traffic spot KOSing people all day- the inconvenience is what drives the game. Having a need is the endgame. Zombies should be hard, weather that is achieved via brilliant AI/scripting or occasional glitches- going into zombie infested areas should be a huge risk. I'd rather see good AI, but the end effect is the same- the shit is dangerous. Generally if you're smart you will be fine. Don't go into buildings of a kind that you know glitch. Don't put your back against a wall that might glitch. Always have an exit route planned out. Keep a low profile. Bring the right weapon for the job. Blahblahblah- not too much to think about, just be cautious. If you're too dumb to know you don't fire an Enfield on main street after you've spawned 30 zombies, you're just not good at DayZ yet. The game is 99% about being generally careful. I've been playing Skyrim recently with some hardcore immersion mods. Compared to those DayZ's basic necessities requirements are almost just a passing reference. The temperature is almost never a factor. Sickness is one dimensional and non-debilitating. Hunger and thirst progress at a very slow rate. Water/food is always safe to drink/eat. Wounds are non a non-factor aside from bleeding or breaking a leg, both of which are immediately easily remedied. You can spend 15 minutes in a city and be buffered against any eventuality for a good while. DayZ just has survival elements, but no fucking way does it lean heavily in that direction. It has just enough to, from time to time, produce a need which translates into an informal "quest" that will take you out of your comfort zone and make you vulnerable to bandits/zombies. Simple formula that I think works pretty well. Cars are pretty much the same thing. Just another element to drive necessity and give the game more dimension between PvP 24/7 and staring at a campfire "surviving" by avoiding danger. The cars in DayZ just made it through a huge battle/zombie infestation. There were people shooting bullets and airstrikes and all manner of explosions. There is glass and debris everywhere. Frequently as a driver you are required to go off-road or run people down. Charnarus probably had questionable infrastructure in the first place. There is plenty to justify why maintaining a rotting Eastern European car is a chore. Keep a spare engine, couple tires, windshield, metal scraps, and a fuel tank and you are prepared for anything as long as you have a toolbox. When preparation fails it gives you a reason to go complete a task, and that is content. If there is a bandit or horde of deadly glitching zombies standing between you and getting your car off the road before it is looted what you have on your hands is a video game. Personally I would like to see more complex inconveniences and more nuanced reasons to do shit. Having an objective is central to the game, and it puts you in interesting positions or forces you to make tough choices. In my opinion DayZ is pretty light on reasons to do shit, and doing shit is not very dangerous at all with a little caution. I reject any sentiment that it is too annoying or micro-managerial. It's not. Find another game. -

You held up the wrong guy...
svenbreakfast replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you're not a simple-minded person, you realize that interaction is more fun when you can afford it. KOS is an idiot's play style, as in you can't think of anything more interesting to use the engine for. I'm not calling KOS players idiots, just saying they play like idiots. There just aren't a lot of creative people out there, and most will default to the lowest common denominator. Hey, there are plenty of situations where KOS is called for, and if nobody did it, yeah the game would suck a bit. I've told a few people to freeze, enjoyed their discomfort and the sound of their nervous voices, maybe trolled them a little bit, and sent them on their way. It's entertaining for me, and for them it gives the whole game just a little bit more soul. It's called having the balls to be a good sport. Bang your dead is over and done with and forgotten with maybe a minor chemical reaction. If I can afford to do it, I like to give people something to tell their friends about. I'm a community-minded fellow like that. If you just want to shoot people in a game DayZ is too complex an apparatus for that. There are lots of games specifically tailored for digital sociopaths. Props to the bandits who staged this scenario, and nice job helping your buddy. Sucks they were careless, but then again "serious" bandits wouldn't have exposed themselves like that in the first place. Unless they were OG bandits so bored with KOS that they realized a degree or two of interaction is more interesting. -
Your Shoot On Sight Threshold?
svenbreakfast replied to Taggert1313's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't like shooting other players. KOS cavemen really do make this game the most psychologically intense experience I've had since being a teenager playing Doom on LSD. If it comes down to me or you dying I'll do what I can to make a corpse of the latter. If I don't absolutely need to kill you, have a fun evening. That said, I do like scaring people as a community service venture. -
What Does DayZ Mean To You? (PvP or Survival)
svenbreakfast replied to An_Atomic_Penguin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Survival. PvP if the necessity arises. No warrior seeks strife. -
Play on low pop servers or a private hive. That saves you from the bullshit or mouth breathers who get online and decide they will grief fresh spawns. When I started DayZ my goal was to survive. On only a couple occasions did the game get as good as it got during the first few play sessions of a given life. A few times I survived for weeks only to die to a glitch. I realized that the only way to survive was to avoid danger. Which is boring. So I decided to live along the coast, and eventually ended up in a series of encounters with another player on my low pop server which ended in me walking away almost dead and him dead. That was pretty much the "game over" screen for me. I bugged out into the mountains for a long time. After that I decided I would leave my tents and interact with people. I hung out in Berezino and killed lots and lots of zombies, trying out different weapons. I never shot another player (oddly never ran into bandits there, which I KOS). However, I did scare a lot of people. Nothing will mess with somebody more than them coming into a room and being told "freeze". I got a few people to drop their weapons and thank me for not killing them. Honestly giving them a scare was more rewarding than just killing them. It's probably a little more sadistic because the fear in their voices was often evident. For me the magic of DayZ has always been that unnerving level of paranoia which I've not encountered in other games. So that was my present when I decided to give back to the community. I was surprised that I didn't get shot before I got bored. All that said, I've chilled out a lot since my home server vanished and my tents with it. I generally stay up north, and have survived for months. I still have fun logging on, but now that I feel like my fate is in my own hands I'm just surviving until the stand-alone. I feel no need to head to a dangerous place and kill people. DayZ is an emergent gaming experience. Adversity is best when it is un-looked for. It's a roleplaying game from my point of view, and a test of just how crafty you really are. Play on low pop or private hive is my best advice. Beyond that overcome adversity, try some stuff out, and maybe be part of the environment to make other players lives more interesting. Honestly it sounds like your experiences are pretty interesting and I'm jealous in a way. I've been alive too long and had too many close calls to put myself in any serious danger anymore.

How many times have you died to zombies?
svenbreakfast replied to Blippy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Twice. Once was beautiful. I logged in at NWAF before work, and was low on ammo from a very exciting night. I was mobbed and died pulling the trigger on an empty rifle. The other time I was eating dinner while playing and fucked up because of that. My two zombie deaths are my favorites. Been killed a few times by players, but the vast majority have been glitch deaths. -
Where was I and What Happened?
svenbreakfast replied to Skat3rat's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I woulda been freaked out too. Really it's moments like this, for whatever reason hacker or not, that make this game for me. I've had a few X Files experiences, but nothing approaching this one. Sounds like you may have gotten your key stolen by the Aphex Twin or some shit. -
And so it slowly dawns on me... Dayz sucks.
svenbreakfast replied to xdarc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
DayZ doesn't suck. However, once you sort out the formula it loses a lot of its magic. Zombies need to be the focus, not COD, and OP points this fundamental flaw out. Still it is nothing more than the most successful mod in history, and nothing less. Personally, I've already won DayZ. I have survived for over a month, even avoiding bug deaths, I have all the supplies I could ever want, and have killed the one bastard that I really wanted to kill while remaining a dedicated hero. No doubt- it should be a survival game first, a zombie game second, and a player interaction (for better or worse) game third. I'm pretty confident that the stand-alone will deliver, considering that the mod managed to hold my attention as much as any studio product ever has. Rocket and company have real street cred. The mod certainly isn't for everybody, and moreover is not meant to be an MMORPG. It's a video game in the most general sense. You play till you get bored, and that's easy to do considering it is just some shit some guy made using a milsim engine. I really don't get why so many people assume that DayZ is supposed to be some sort of long term commitment, entertaining for infinity, or that it's appropriate to say they "quit". -
Can't Join Home Server Required: 1.62.96751
svenbreakfast posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Hey, I'm doing ok for some reason, but ever since my server updated to 1.7.2.6 a couple of my friends can't join our home server. They have followed all the steps I did when updating. It must be a battleye version thing, as their arma2 and dayz is up to date. I've had them launch arma2 and op arrowhead to try and update BE to no avail. The server appears in the list with an X and they can't join. Any advice? -
ATVs flip easily on uneven terrain. Bridges, railroads, and even the ground in a harbor will flip em too. I'll only open up the throttle on my ATV if I'm on a paved road. In general you should avoid going max speed.

Why Do Zombies Serpentine?
svenbreakfast replied to Elen Sila's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's just because the engine wasn't designed for that type of interaction between models. As for the zig-zag stuff, I hope they smooth it out but keep something like it in. It's about the only thing that makes taking on numbers of zombies challenging at all. -
Awesomeness that is L85A2 AWS
svenbreakfast replied to BuzzBurridge's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When I needed it, it was there, and gave me a very satisfying kill against my nemesis who I must admit was every bit as stealthy as he was a bad shot. It was pretty much the ideal situation for me to have that gun in my nearby tent. Generally I don't like it, but there are situations when it is precisely the tool for the job. -

Players in the last 24 hours
svenbreakfast replied to Kaffarov37's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think people make the mistake at looking at DayZ as some sort of MMORPG minus about every element of an MMORPG. I guess I concede that you can acquire gear and it's online. People are silly coming here and saying "I quit" and shit when it doesn't fit the genre. DayZ is a video game. You are not expected to play forever. It has emergent replay value and it's a sandbox game, but I loved GTA4 in the same regard and haven't fired that up in some time. Why would you assume people are going to just keep playing an alpha of a mod in perpetuity? Do you also watch favorite movie once a week? For the record, I quit DayZ just about every night. -

What is the best loot from a chopper crash site you've gotten?
svenbreakfast replied to Neelon's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Pretty small range of what you can get from a chopper. Seems like people have a real hard-on for the 50 cal sniper rifles, which I have found in abundance. I'm more an M14 guy.
