It's not that there's a problem with the existence of bandits, it's that here's a problem with the prevalence. Shoot on sight is kind of boring as well to be honest. I don't mind creeping around the apocalypse, but the fact that I can say with 90% certainty that the proper solution when I see movement in the distance is to open up on them before they do the same to me....well, that's unfortunate.

The audible radius on all shotguns but the Winchester is 90m. The Winchester is audible for 125m. Not a huge difference, but it's there. -
I like it. You might want to throw in some stuff about finding gear though. Barns and deer stands are fantastic.

Barns are your best friend. You can find basically everything you need in the game in barns. http://dayzdb.com/map Learn it. Love it. Fear it. Get off the coast. Try not to play alone, and try not to play at night. It's better to crawl for 5 minutes than to run for 30 seconds and have to fire your gun. Automatic weapons are great, but shotguns are normally better. They're quiet, accurate, powerful, and have plentiful ammo. Disconnect, don't AFK. Always keep at least one antibiotic, one bandage, one morphine, and one painkiller in your inventory. When you need them, you likely won't have time to get into your pack. -

I think a lot of the reason bandits are so common is that zombies aren't really threatening. There's no sense of PVE to the game, no difficulty outside of other players...and if that other guy happens to be bored, you're not going to have a chance to fire back. By the time you realize he's shooting, you're dead.

I attempted to let people live for the most part, but it's just too much of a risk. I run with a buddy from out of the game, and we've found that even the most docile seeming players will turn on you the second they think they can get away with it. It's why we stick to low pop servers and stay away from central areas.

Find a barn. Find every barn. You'll find some hatchets and shotguns, maybe a lee enfield pretty quickly if you just hop from one to another. -
Is it really necessary to be so pedantic over the difference between a clip and a magazine, particularly if you're not going to bother to explain the difference?
