  1. Did you use stuff from Blair Witch on this? That stuff is giving me goddamn nightmares.
  2. I noticed the temp. is no longer listed in the top right Debug window. So now if my gauge goes reddish... am I getting too hot or cold? I am guessing cold. Damn this DayZ is serious business.

    dayz for mac?

Chazg, take note: there is a huge difference between Bootcamp, as Synopsis mentioned he uses, and Parallels. Parallels is a program that runs on OS X that virtualizes a PC. You run it out of the box and you have a nice black screen with a blinking C: cursor on it. Then you install your flavor of supported OSs. Bootcamp IS a native PC using the hardware in the Mac. Parallels will be slower and probably buggy, since you are borrowing resources from the host (OS X) and everything you do is a translation. It works amazingly well, but I am not too sure about running a modern game in Parallels. Let us know!

Can't you just shoot them in the head?

Considering even throwing a can while prone involves the animation taking 5 minutes to do jumping jacks and throw the can TWICE, plus the constant lag and low framerates - "just shoot em in the head" sounds like a comment from someone who hasn't actually played the game yet. Or go ahead, you do that. Good luck.

Yes sir. The newbie phase is one hell of a litmus test. If you pass it at all, it means you like the game enough to figure out the best way that works for you. Damn, I even like just hanging in there at night, trying to pick out the big and little dippers, and listen to the breeze.
  6. I used the Enfield quite successfully my 1st / 2nd day, helping out friends who were getting chased by Zs. So don't be afraid of it. Some guns are loud but, I would suggest that you not be on a crowded server when you are new anyhow, so the risk is mitigated. Anyhow, the common items seem to disappear just as I join a server, so beggars can't be choosers. :)

    City on Fire

I've seen that too. It was my first time in Elektro. My first thought was... man this place is screwed. I also considered trying to get the zombies into the fire if they were chasing me but then I realized, there's no way they'd let me off that easy. I haven't seen that since.
  8. Working but I didn't do any of that weapons patch .zip file that has been mentioned. I'm on 1.7.2.4, that's all I know. I never downloaded or manually installed any beta patch. Anything I ever did was verify through steam, repair failed verifications (I wish I knew more details to assist), updated through Commander. It only updated DayZ. It claimed my Arma2 was out of date. I finally clicked update in 6 Launcher, it updated some more, verified beta, and said I was all good. Back to Commander, and got in a 1.7.2.4 game.
  9. WORKED. DETAILS: Restarted Steam as Admin. Verified Cache files, and had to update one in both games. Attempted to update from DayZ Commander - complained about the Arma2 version. <- false error? Ran update from 6 Updater. Searched for games in Commander - after unchecking the "Ignore incompatible versions" (because Commander doesn't know what I have now... weird) Joined an updated server lickety split. NICE NEW SPLASH SCREEN
  10. I launched 6 Updater so I could check my version. I says 1.7.2.4 under the DayZ graphic. Then under that it says "UPDATE". I did not click UPDATE. I launched DayZ Commander to join a server I was on last night - 1.7.2.3 Stuck at Loading...
  11. My buddy axed me in the back "by accident" trying to save me from a horde attack. I told him to grab my pack and wait for me someplace as I had some decent stuff I needed, like food, canteen, knife, etc and I didn't feel like grinding away for it. Funny though, I haven't seen him in a few days.
  12. Xaian, the fact is you don't know what was going through their head. You are probably right - he was a motherless POS who was preying on the vulnerable. Take one look at any forum thread and you will see they are everywhere. Remember, this is an online game. People are evil. But the minute they suspect that your 6 is covered, they go crawling back to their corner. I hear ya though. Crappy day trying to survive. Better luck next time. We've all been there. And for the love of baby Jesus, use your god-damned Direct Chat. At least it will stop me having to murder you next time too. ;)

Yes sir. Literally your first time or two, stay down big time. Also, use 3rd Person View (hit the Enter on the NumPad) and hold down ALT while looking around to keep your head on a swivel.

    The hatchet

Thanks - yes I've seen that. My mistakes early on were 1) Swinging from too far away and 2) In a panic, not realizing that you can't sprint and swing... sounds obvious but under adrenaline, things happen. I know the exact behavior you mention. You would think if you rushed at them, surprising THEM, they would just attack right then and there. I am sure that will be refined down the road. Good times.

    The hatchet

Pedro, I was just about to post about this. I was having a lot of hatchet problems last night. It was my first time with the hatchet. Playing with a buddy who had it, it seemed foolproof. But, I got killed EASILY by 2 walkers and I couldn't take them out for some reason. Then I respawned and managed to find one quickly, and since it was night time, I hacked about 30 of them to bits because I could sneak up on them. But if I mistakenly aggravated one or two, they would still get several swipes in before I landed my hits. I think there was some lag between my +attack and the actual swing, but even then... something was wrong. If you can offer any other tips, I'd appreciate it.
  16. 16) The ALT key. Hold it down. You can do it while moving too, but NOT whilst also holding SHIFT to slow down. 22) No. God damn it. LOL.

Great post, LOLbot. I am a new player as well. Not even a week in. Hopefully some other intrepid types are looking here in search of some tips, without too much hand-holding. To gain the best experience, don't look for all the answers. Remember, the desperation is part of the fun. But to cut down on the annoyance factor, yes... the windows you can see in are the buildings to try. If all you find are tin cans, grab em. You can use them to divert a few walkers from your immediate area. Throwing is buggy as hell though, so it will take some practice. You might launch the can a mile away or you might bounce it off something near to you so definitely practice. And read the tutorial about the backpack. Chances are you are not using it for its intended purpose yet. Good luck and look me up. Oh and watch your legs... if you break em you will need morphine, which, though many people insist that it is so common, I have yet to find any. /shrug
  18. Have you ever been able to launch it, or is this a new problem? Can you launch Arma2 by itself? Can you launch Arma2:OA by itself? If you used to be able to launch it, in steam, verify the game cache for both Arma2 and Arma2:OA You mention 3 ways you tried launching. Steam, 6 Updater, and "something else". What's the 3rd way?

    Worst Community Ever

OP: You looked for a gun for 30 WHOLE MINUTES? When I first started, I crawled around for fucking DAYS.
  20. With this: Do Not Engage: ... 2) Unarmed Starting Players (Doesn't include players with large packs) Do you mean - if there is an unarmed player who happens to have a large pack (it happens), kill them?

    Worst Way You Ever Died

My 2nd day I fell off a perch in the pitch black. Landed on some landing halfway down. I have no idea what as I was new to the game and the area and was just scared and spooked. Someone red-lighted me, I tried to play it safer, and backed clear off the ledge to my death. Goodbye all the goodies in my pack. I am sure there are many more, worse ways to go. Maybe even today!

    Why do they run?

LMAO! As a card-carrying Bandit Conversion Facilitator, I must say there is some compelling truth to your argument!
  23. I was just wondering about this last night. Since I found a tent (with nothing in it...) and since it wasn't mine I couldn't take the tent, then theoretically couldn't the server be overrun with tents if the deployers never came back to remove them?

New players cant get past learning curve

So many posts. Some immature trolling. OP, the point is this: This game is not for everyone. I'm sorry you don't like it or Arma2. When I bought it, I wasn't sure how much I would like it either. Luckily it was all right up my alley and I rolled with the normally-unforgiveable bugs in Arma. It could have gone the other way, but I am glad it didn't. You took the trouble to register here and post, so perhaps you still have hope or desire to make it work. If you change your mind, look me up. Peace!

    [GUIDE] Gear/Inventory

Dude, thank you for this. I have been using backpacks all wrong until I read this. That is to say, I was carrying around empty backpacks the whole damn time. Now I can fill my bag with dozens of empty tin cans and still have room on my "person" for a bunch more empty soda cans!
