Weapon cleaning kits are not useless!
FishGuts4Lunch replied to Dagwood's topic in General Discussion
I wish it worked on the fire axe. Since getting a tent and doing more hunting and cooking my axe has degraded at a quick pace. How hard would it be to sharpen an axe or replace the handle? -
I thing much of the reason tent don't get raided as much as you might think is the fact that they are so buggy at the moment. If I go to my tent for the first time after a server reset the contents are often completely invisable. I keep a specific slot empty and if I place something there to contents suddenly appear again. So, a tent raider might look inside, see nothing but be unable to steal the tent either. Trying to place an item inside will not work either unless you know where the free slot is at. I spent one hour to find the perfect spot and it was only visiblefrom one side in a distance for about 10-15 meters. The vegetation was my camo and thats how it should be. You must have been very lucky to find it Without a doubt finding the right spot is the key to having a tent and keeping the items inside safe. I have a feeling that most people will be setting them on the northern edge of the map. There are lots of bolders and crannies where a tent may be hard to find. The down side is that will make it a nasty long trudge to put things inside it or reach it as a new spawn to get yourself kitted out again quickly.I think it is a better choice to take a slightly greater risk and keep it more central. I have been keeping notes of suitable places since my days on the mod. My own tent is also in a sparsly traveled region and pretty well hidden. To be honest I have trouble finding it myself Myself, I am keeping my tent as a backup with all the luxuries I need to set up my charactor with full kit so he can start again without visiting all the dangerious spots as a bambi... A gun, axe, ammo, jacket, pants, vest, backpack, bandages and food.

Well I seem to have made a bit of progress with the tents... Yes, everything apparently was still inside and placing an item in the tent will for the most part make them reappear. I made the stupid mistake of filling the tent to max capacity yesterday and after the server reset I could no longer place an item inside it to make the tent show me it's contents. I was fairly certain that I was screwed at that point BUT low and behold this morning I could see some of the items. I was able to remove and replace several items and see the entire contents at some point. The tents as rather buggy at first and even innitially dupped the full mountain packpack inside twice. I did a Happy dance at this point as being against exploits I don't look a gift horse in the mouth either ;) . Sadly the two extra backpacks were gone a few minutes later but on the bright side, ALL my gear was intact and could be accessed. I have now promissed myself to leave a certain slot in the tent free at all times as this will give me a place to "unlock" the contents by placing an item from my inventory in this space. This causes the tent's contents to become visable. Who knows, perhaps this will act as a sort of safety to keep people from plundering it's contents. If they look inside, there is a chance they see nothing but at the same time they cannot steal the tent because it it full. One other little idiosyncrasy I came across happens when stacking Inventory. I have some jackets, vests and pants in the tent which I naturally filled with items before I place them. But every now and then an article of clothing will refuse to let itself be placed in the tent. If I empty the slots, there is no longer a problem. I can even place the items in the clothing once it is place in the tent. BUT if I put the item of clothing back on my body or try to move it inside the tent, the same thing happens again. I believe it has something to do with the items themselves and not the piece of clothing. Inside the pants I placed a mosin compensator, 5 composit arrows and 3 boxes of mosin ammo (if I remember correctly). But at the end of the day it is all in the tent and safe. I am just wondering what I will do with it all come Tuesday night when the tent must be backed up to keep it from being wiped during server maintenance. The last thing I wasn is to lose my tent!

Indeed There needs to be a slight balance to allowing the bambis to find food and gear up to a basic level in order to survive and having food overly abundant making the need to hunt and fish a moot subject. As you say, I had a terrible time in experimental trying to get to a level where I was not like a injuried/starving gazelle on the plains of the Serengetti. I was constantly finding the houses empty. The only real way to survive was to make your way to a secluded town, log out and then log in just after the server was reset and food was abundant for a short while.

I know at some point drinking water from an open sorce, e.g. a stream or lake as opposed to a water bottle of well is going to mean having to use water purification tablets or risk getting ill. So my thought is, would it be possible to put water in a pot and boil it on a fire, let it cool and then pour it into a canteen or drink it directly and thus avoid the need to scavange for purification tablets or risk getting killed while drinking at a well? ;)
-
Yes but if, as I suspect items of food and drink become more scarce in the future then boiling water would be a great asset!

No, At this moment it is safe to drink all sources of water without purification. -
Hi there, I have recently started playing DayZ again after a break at the end of version 0.48. I had the good fortune to start directly after the 0.50 patch came out. One of the things that became very apparent in 0.50 was how much harder I need to work to get my character to regenerate health after a zombie hit. Were as in the old days my health would start healing as soon as it was hit, nowadays the window for health regeneration has gotten much smaller. Damage will often drop you below the threshold of healing making it necessary to eat something first to get healing started. I don't consider this to be a bad thing at the moment. I did come across what I consider to be a small exception to the rule regarding eating cooked meat... Unable to resist taking a shot at roaming game, I took down a deer, butchered it and put several of the steaks into my pack. My hope was to make a cozy little campfire somewhere and have a bit of a pick nick. When the time came to start cooking, I was in a bit of a sorry state after 4 Zeds had ganged up on me and managed to glitch in a few hits. I made a fire, cooked the steaks and started having my dinner. Looking at my health bar I noticed something quite extraordinary... Where as normally you need to get your energized and hydration levels up to bright green before healing will start, now I was healing with a bright green energized bar but both the healing and hydration bars were dark green. NEVER seen this before. It would seem to me that cooking and eating meat now gives a player and extra level up health wise compared to eating out of a can. Are you low on health? Have a BBQ and let me know if it makes any difference to how quickly you begin to heal! Time to do a bit of hunting! This woual seem to be another adaptation to making living off the land a bit more appealing. Indeed in the real would after a collapse of civelazation canned food would start to fet quite scarce rather quickly and living off the land becomes increasingly more important. I don't know... I kinda like it. B)

I believe before 0.50 you are correct. My experiance at the moment is that the bar has been raised slightly. Has anyone else had the same experiance?

Tent and Drybag Testing - Good News For Persistence *Updated*
FishGuts4Lunch replied to ob1korobi's topic in General Discussion
I have seen the Warning Notice notice shown in red on entering the game that on Wednesdays all servers reboot for maintainence and any deployed tends will be lost !!! Sadly this will mean the loss of most of the stored gear and packing the tent will mean removing the contents and filling almost all of your storage space with the tent itself. It will come down to deciding which you concider to be more valuable... the tent or it's contents. Personally I have yet to find a tent in standalone but I must admit I and extremely keen to get one. I look forward to the time when I can have a little hidden camp with all the room I need to store the more bulky items needed for living off the land like a bow and arrows, fishing pole, butchered meat etc. I seriously want to get away from spend all my time trudging from one place to another looking for cans or food and weapons and spend more time hunting, fishing and cooking. So instead of killing and being killed at NWA I can patrol and guard my little hideaway from those who would raid it. Sadly, Look as I might I have found nothing as yet and it would seem that even if I found one, as things stand at the moment my joy would most likely be short lived. But I guess one can always hope and dream  -

I am amazed how much hydration I manage to build up just by eating. I now find myself eating more often to the level of stuffed just to keep my levels up to par. The sodas and Rasuptin Kvaas have taken on a whole new level of importance in the game. I am very greatful that at this point we are still able to drink from open water without getting sick, otherwize we would be having a war were people were spending all their time looking for water purification tablets. LOL Bandits killing people for water purification tabelts! Hey would that be a cool feature... Boil water to make it drinkable! This would give all those pots and pans a whole new value! -
What can i do if i dont trust anybody?
FishGuts4Lunch replied to OoohShiny's topic in New Player Discussion
It's a good feeling when you meet another player and then leave one another in peace and maybe even help each other out... But it's not without it's dangers. If I find mayself in a low danger area OR if I find an lightly armed/unarmed player I will try to spare their life and maybe even help out if i can do so with little risk. Having the drop on somebody makes it less difficult to be nice I'll give them some food and perhaps some gear but keep them at a distance and under shot. If I have my doubts or they don't follow instructions, they are toast. It is often easier to be nice if you are in a small group. Then one can keep an eye on the person while the other helps out. What ever you do, don't give them a weapon. Or if you feel you absolutely must, give them the gun and agree to plave the ammo in a house down the road and then make like the shepard and get the flock out of there. Now I say "small group" because I feel that once a group get too big it tends to turn into a contest to up the body count. as long as it is only two or three players the gang mentality is less likely to take hold. In many cases you come across other players totally by accident. Walk into a room or come around the corner and find yourself nose to nose with someone. Unless they are a total bambi or haven't seen you so you have the drop on them, I say waste em. The safest way to play nice is to travel in a group and use team speak or similar to stay in contact. MY personal rule is be nice if you can but take no chances. -
The good and the bad of 50th patch
FishGuts4Lunch replied to kakysas666's topic in General Discussion
Another "Good" that I have come across is that Zombie hits don't seem quite as damaging to clothing at this time. I have taken several hits while sparing with my axe and to date only one pair of cargo pants were ruined. inside the pants themselves one item damaged an one ruined. If you ask me this is a big gain. I used to get so frustrated when after long searching a matching ensamble was afinally aquired only to see a vest or backpack ruined from a chance Z hit. One little glitch I have come across is a tendancy for my charactor to suddenly start punching wildly for several minutes. If you are not trying to be stealthy and your hands are empty or only holding a melee weapon it isn't all that bad. But my buddy was less fortunate when holding an assult rile which promptly emptied it's clip, wounded another player and advertised is presence to a wide area. I have found the easiest work around is to make my charactor pick up an item and the punching stops. I have now noticed that the punching starts just after I return from an Alt-Tab to another off game screen. Doing another one or two Alt-Tab switches seems to cure the problem. -
I know the drill involved in reporting all the servers that violate the Terms Of Service one comes across in the browser list, how to identify them and where to report them. That isn't the point of this post. On multiple occasions I have taken the time to scan the browser list for servers announcing "Join=Kick, Character delete, Members Only" and a large number of variations of forbidden practices. I looked up the host and sent them an email informing them the server in question was in breach of the the Dev.'s TOS. I added a link to the TOS so the host could verify the violation. I then added these severs to my favorites list and watched to see if my efforts resulted in the server changing it's name. In total 53% of the servers reported failed to amend their practices involving a name violating the TOS. One host specifically took no action what so ever (ch##pa.net) Not a single server from this provider changed it name in the 2 weeks following my complaint nor did they ever acknowledge any complaint sent to them by me. The address I use was correct and verified. In other words, just don't give a crap. I have yet to see a server disappear after a complaint. So if you take joy in the idea that your complaint is going to cost some little dipstick his server subscription, forget it. The chances of it happening are minuscule On the other hand several providers gave an immediate response to my email as well as a follow-up email and most of the servers reported to these hosts rectified the title it used within 2-3 days... Bravo! So is there really any point in reporting an abusing server if more than half the providers could care less if the Terms Of Service are violated or not? I believe it is. If each player took the time to send just a single report that will be millions of complaints in total and should make the providers take notice. Arbitrary or not the rules are clear and if you don't like them then your aren't being forced to host a server and are free to spend your money on cigarettes and booze instead. Still I can't help feeling that an email to the server in the end of the line. There must be more we can do to ensure the little shits keep to the rules. I'm also sure the Dev.'s have recourse to enforce more action against those in violation but the question is, can they be bothered to do so? I would love to see a list of severs who's right to host the game has been revoked. Name and shame are it were. Other thoughts?
-
Like I said before the rules are irrelevent. They are plainly stated and if you don't agree, take a hike! I'm sure that at some point as we move into the full version things will become more lienient. But at this point while testing we need the info withing confined restraints for development.
-
In other words a shotgun email? If you send an email to all 5 then one has to be right?
-
Smash, That was choopa.net. / Choopa.com... both link to the same host. I used the email abuse@choopa.net and .com as well without ever getting a single responce. These links are listed on their website. I very much doubt it is due to them never receiving the emails. Some forums are sensitive about naming names so I wasn't sure if using the actual server name was concidered out of line.

Do Zombies Dream Of A Good Nights Sleep? (Zombie feedback)
FishGuts4Lunch replied to SmashT's topic in General Discussion
I like ythe stronger, faster zeds but s many others have said, I would enjoy it more if they went agro a bit less easily so we could stealth past them and when they are killed a bit of a respawn delay would be nice, say 90 seconds? The new axe hit mechanics are a bit of a pain in the ass. I enjoyed it the way it was. -
I just wanted to say I did find a Hunter 22 in a green residential building in electro. Didn't find any ammo though.
-
I do the exact same thing. I have two characters on experimental and two in stable branch... hardcore and regular in each. Changing the file in steam only takes a few minutes.
-
My browser history has become so full I can no longer see which server I played on last. Is there any way to delete to browser history or reset it. I would like to be able to see which server I played on last and add it to my favorites if I like it without searching through all the clutter. When I get a steam invite it takes me directly to the server without me ever seeing the name. The filter in the browser is useless in my experience as typing the IP or name under "HOST"in the filter results in a blank server list
-
I checked that file... not the one we are looking for. Perhaps it is somewhere in steam?

On experimental, does the raincoat prevent you from getting wet?
FishGuts4Lunch replied to thequantum's topic in General Discussion
I have been trying it out and this is what I have on the subject... Not wearing a raincoat means you are soaked in less than a minute. Just going outside is enough, it happens almost too quickly to describe. One moment you are dry and the next minute the tag next to your avatar in the items list is "SOAKED". There is little in the way of transition between the two states Putting a raincoat on considerably delays the time it takes to get soaked. Your character goes through a transition from damp, wet & soaked. In my experience in takes about 15 - 30 mintes to become soaked. I have the impression that the better the condition the raincoat is in, the longer the process takes. Sewing kits do not seem to improve raincoats. -
If you eat as much as you can and drink water every chance you get you will eventually get past the "Hyadrated-Stuffed" to the "healthy" stage where your character will heal in just a few minutes.
-
Could be you just have a nasty case of crotch-rot. If they get damaged use a sewing kit to patch them up.
