Why don't we spawn along the southern coast?
libertine replied to libertine's topic in General Discussion
APOLOGIES TO ANY DEVS THAT READ THIS THREAD: I re-read what i wrote now after some time not having looked at this and it looks WAY more angry than i actually was. Like i said, i just swear a lot lately in life and don't mean to be rude and i mean no offense to any devs! Im just passionate about this game so i get a little worked up sometimes...and im a little worried your going to get to beta a call it a day, but thats no excuse for causing [potential] emotional harm. So sorry guys. -
Why don't we spawn along the southern coast?
libertine replied to libertine's topic in General Discussion
First off, its not raging, i just swear a lot when i talk nowadays :) 2nd, what "reasons"? You mean roleplay? I'm not interested in that. I've done that, i have 600 hours in standalone (before 3 years ago) and god knows how many hours of playing the mod. I've followed the power lines pretending i was trying to find civilization many times. I've *walked*, under them while having my morning coffee. They didn't add another map so i can't explore new areas. These "new" areas of Chernarus, with these new rock formations that look out of a mobile game, that all look the same with the same layout, one town is another town, not that interested in exploring there. I love that they are making the game hard though, i have a hard time surviving now, but it must be that way because when i learn to survive, everything will probably become too easy. In some ways, i think they are doing a great job. -

What character? If there is a character in the main menu screen where you used to normally choose them, they've developed powers of invisibility. I see no character models. 800 forums posts yes, but this was the same forum for the DayZ mod. HaseDesTodes: Don't want your help. Never did. If you think swearing is uncivil and you don't care to give those people help -don't help me, don't ever reply to me, don't interact with me. Rhetorical questions (means no need to reply) Have you figured out yet that "poop" and "shit" have the same meaning, but "shit" is somehow............evil? Wait, oh no its not thats right, humans are just stupid. EDIT: Yep, i just tried it and yes you can set the character, despite not seeing any models in the character screen. I didn't even try, because they for a time didn't let you choose and just spawned you randomly with any character, i thought we were still on the program since i didn't see any characters at all on the screen........ Does anyone else actually see models? -
Binocs/scopes are very valuable! wtf devs?

I only recently started checking deer stands again. Good loot, but i don't see why it would be there as opposed to in a house or supermarket, i thought they were explicitly going for realism in this area. Who leaves a pair of binoculars in a deer stand in a rainy, cold climate or any climate? All that stuff i found doesn't really make sense in the quantity i see it in. I thought they were going to do stuff like put a fully loaded and equipped AK47 laying on a couch on the 7th floor of one of the apartment buildings and another good gun leaning up against a wall in a lonely house in the woods and maybe one would sometimes spawn on the top of a high building in a tent used by a fictional survivor who didn't make it.... Holy S this game. I had an unloaded AR-15 in my 1br apartment closet for 5 years. In Russia, everybody gets a free tank on their fifteenth birthday. Serious -

Not only is Cherno empty, theres almost no reason to go there from the east coast. I just slowly go through the same buildings till im literally fucking dizzy from all the turning around. Searching entire buildings, one at a time. No loot, no loot, no loot, no loot, sweater, no loot, t-shirt, no loot, pick axe, no loot, no loot, matches, no loot, no loot, empty rifle i've never had ammo for ever, no loot, empty pistol i might be able to use in 3 or 4 hours of more looting/traveling, no loot, oh im wet and hypothermic, dead. Its all the same buildings. Also, a player could pass right next to you, even be there for hours, and you might not see him because of the new lack of wide open spaces, which are a realistic part of industrial locations. Maybe new-Cherno is too big? Don't even get me started on the worthless NE airfield. Its not interesting, no loot, lame buildings, no artistic touches IMO, no military, no story-via-model-placement. This whole game man. Why do we start in a goofy looking clean t-shirt and jeans always and our character models look so fucking awkward? Isn't that why we gave them money, to develop high quality AAA content? Why do i almost always spawn as a women? I've watched male action stars constantly since childhood (for better or worse...) and being a women is immersion breaking. WTF is that? No offense to women and im glad female characters are in it, i'd be disappointed if they wern't but let me choose a male, because im personally fucking male. Let us immerse ourselves as much as we can. This is about US experiencing a survival situation and most of US are MALE. Why is the "wave" emote animation look like a guy waving goodbye to his wife and kids across from a chasm hes about to die on because he can't escape -how about a more human casual wave that fits more situations and works while moving, doens't beg a rely,etc... How come they haven't added proper ladder climbing yet with a good AAA animation including transitionals that look perfectly natural and WHY THE FUCK CAN'T I LOOK AROUND WHILE ON A LADDER? Are we physically challenged characters? Don't you think it might be interesting to stop and look around while on a ladder on one of the tall buildings? Why the fuck can't i look upwards ANY TIME? I can't even SEE straight above me, WTF IS THAT? Seriously, what the fuck is that? Why THE HELL don't you show server population numbers? I was on a first person character the other day and saw all "low" servers.......................................................................................... K? So...if i hit population and flip the list, guess what happens.............................................guess..............lol...........................holy shit this game. Is it a single player game now? All that said, i like that they're making it complex and i really hope they just push forward with their goal of a hardcore survival experience and lets see what we get, but man, rough edges....ho ly shit we have some rough edges. I thought we hired these guys to iron out rough edges. -

Thats really bad, do they assume everyone is using a 1440p or higher monitor or something? Look at Steam screen size statistics devs. This is something that isn't broken here IMO. If i try to spot a guy in the bushes above a town, its going to be impossible without binoculars/scope now. Ill be trying to see individual pixels move on my 1080p screen. In the last 40 hours i just put into dayz, i have found 0 binoculars btw. I also agree, binos and scopes, as they are now, are extremely valuable and instantly get a quick slot. Heres a reality check for the devs: Stand at the Chernarus dock edge with a view of the top of the high tower you can climb thats in the center. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE PEOPLE AT THE VERY TOP WITH THE NAKED EYE! Not only can't i do that, i can't do it with eye zoom ALREADY at 1080p! Maybe they'll complete what they've started here and mandate we all wear fucking eye patches on both eyes so the only way to encounter another player is to bump into them. Or just make the game offline single player. -
I can't get Greenshot or Dxtory to take a screenshot in DayZ. How do you guys do it? Anyone not having a problem with Greenshot or Dxtory?
-
I think they just need to make it a really good, compelling game that fits their original goals and then label it as such ("2.0" or change the name to DayZ: The Experience, or whatever, just an example) and market that info when its all done. People will check it out again, but when they do, they need to see something compelling again, you've got that one chance for most people probably. I hate to say it, but IMO they've got a long way to go. Color palette looks like super saturated Borderlands for f sake when its sunny.
-
I will try that if i can't get my other programs working. I normally am a little afraid to turn on Steam stuff for fear of losing FPS. Not based on any hard info though, i just use these other programs anyway.

[Dev] Eye zoom 'probably' being removed entirely
libertine replied to -Gews-'s topic in General Discussion
I always thought eye zoom was to compensate for the perceivable detail from low resolution monitors compared to the human eye. Makes sense. If so, will its removal also come with a serving of Call of Duty weapon bob animation? -

Then you would barely be afraid as a new spawn if everyone did that. Just wander right through Chernarus. -
accelerated time....why people dont like it?
libertine replied to kopo79's topic in General Discussion
I will NEVER play the game at night. Its not scary, its doesn't enhance my experience. Doing all that work, especially when building something, only to have it ruined by some guy using raised gamma or spotting my dumbass using a flashlight and sniping me a split second later. Let me tell you something, I used to play on a set of servers that all had about 45-60 minutes of full nighttime. I couldn't stand it. I asked many times why the heck they bothered with it. Every time the answer was "just use gamma" from many people and the answer went unchallenged with no one angered by the comment. No one bothered by people walking around basically in thermal scope mode compared to them. These were popular full servers too. So, what was actually happening in this instance is: People weren't even playing at night. They were simply playing in the regular game in "black and white" mode with full brightness. What.........was............the.........point? By all means simulate nighttime with a beautiful dusk look to the world, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had or Skyrim. Do whats important, make it *feel* like night time. Bring out the stars and nebuelas. But don't leave honest players vunerable to other players who haven't had life throw enough shit at them yet to be empathetic towards other people's real lives. Plus, as Whyherro123 said, we sleep at night. I slept 12 hours a day till I was about 24 I think due to I think depression. I would hibernate right through a zombie apocalypse. But also, to each his own, it would be great to have as a server option for those that get something out of it. -
Edit: I have now learned that they are in the middle of making some big changes, so if you are a dev, please understand that I realise what I am concerned about you may still be working on. Also, apologies for my comments on Chernogorsk changes, I guess I was wrong about the severity of those changes. I had seen a streamer go through the new Cherno many times and assumed they had taken out the industrial section.........yaaaaaa...no. I just started letting DayZ news back into my life after a 3+ year break, hoping to be surprised at all the new stuff, but I started watching some streams. I can't believe what they did to this game (or didn't do). Most importantly I expected to see a couple of new maps, one with a full cityscape like in the movie "I am Legend", (based on Rocket's comments and common fucking sense)) with new places to explore which is something absolutely crtical for the continued enjoyment of peaceful/survivor type players who don't choose to get enjoyment out of PVP'ing/KOSing. I expected a bit of a story or mystery to figure out, like Origins mod team did with Patient Zero on Tavania. They did nothing. They basically rearranged some buildings......on a map that people already loved. They changed the trees and grass.....that people already loved. I remember being so happy about DayZ originally partly JUST because people would get to experience the beautiful Chernarus map I had known from Arma 2, a beautiful map that IMO set a presedent in gaming. They felt the need to change it apparently. While some of the changes are a small improvement, there are so many backward steps and all of this development amounts to nothing. We also have far less features than the mod, even less weapon variety. We must kill wolves now. I have no fucking desire to shoot what is basically a wild dog trying to survive. In watching streams, I see people using a tiny stick to poke zombies to death, w....t....f? Is this the type of zombie behavior/fighting you have been planning this whole time? Because I think we might have told you to save yourself (and our wallets) the trouble, not splitting the Dayz community with standalone and instead focusing on further mod dev. You still have only a few head variations and they look like they're relaxed in a fucking cubicle doing office work. You guys took out the two best running animations ive ever seen in a game. TWO! Arma 2 had them and you took them out. Why? The new running-with-gun animations looks extremely aggressive, like "I'm going to fuck something up RIGHT NOW!!" aggressive. Looking back at some of the DayZ mod vids, the movement transitions seems so much smoother, like the transition from jogging to crouched-jogging with no speed reduction. I can't double tap the forward key to jump up form crouching and start running quickly. This is just one of a few bits of sophistication from the Mil-Sim aspect of Arma 2 that you REMOVED. We need MORE, not LESS. Its not to say there aren't some improvments with anims and such, but overall after hours of watching streams, we've got a 3 steps forward, 2 steps back game here. They also messed Chernogorsk up, the industrial area was the coolest part of Chernarus IMO, its basically gone. The sense of massive industrial scale, dereclict and IMO quite hunting and interesting, they took out, and they did so to make that part of Cherno look exactly like any other town using building we so all over Chernarus. They added an airplane wreck that looks like it belong in a fucking comic book. Planes don't wreck like that, they are way too fragile to hold together. It looks ridiculous. So we're they've just rearranged a bunch of stuff, on a map that already worked and looked great!?!? The area east of Chernogorsk, just to the west of Skyrim mountain for example, they developed it with some bigger buildings, but it worked well the way it was. It made sense for that part of town to be a small residential homes with that beautiful hillside backdrop, away from Chernogorsk. Does it REALLY matter that they added bigger buildings? Its...okay....I guess? Does it help improve DayZ? Not for me... They took out canned food, one of the most interesting parts of surviving in my opinion and kind of cool and haunting to see one can of food on a shelf, and now food is everywhere, but the process of getting natural food incredibly boring, repetitive and uninteresting, highlighting repetitive, unrealistic animations. Why do the footstep sound effects suck so much (on concrete and a few other surfaces)? (maybe improved now?) In a game, anything that is on the screen full time, or heard over and over and OVER again needs to be 100%. One of my biggest gripes is the rarity and variety of cool assault rifles. (not talking about unfair stuff like thermal scopes or high powered-click-your-mouse button-they-die-sniper-rifles) You can take this stuff out and make the game more survival oriented, but you needed to substitute it with something fun. Its just a big loot search fest right now and fighting zombies whos visual detection code barely makes any sense half the time, not adding to and sometimes even breaking immersion. WTF happened at BI Studios this last 4 years? Zombies could be a cool, dynamic element for this game if they had some variation in behavior and the combat with them was realistic, especially the animations. One other problem I've noticed watching streams is that loot is so rare that there is no reason not to take EVERYTHING you find, such that if you are behind someone, looting the same buildings, you may get nothing for hours, surely there is a better way? Also, in the original DayZ, everything was a prized possession. Now I can pull an effective melee weapon out of any tree, and it doesn't even look believable (skinny unnatrually straight branch). I can find food in any old apple tree. I thought we wanted Man Vs Guns, not Man Vs. Wild. Don't even get me started about nighttime, holy shit, I could never play that because people WILL USE GAMMA adjustments to find you and you will run and loot for hours only to be shot by some kid who has never pondered the results of his actions. Its a game, there will be kids. By all means, make it dusk, beautiful and haunting. Simulate night, make it feel like night, just don't let a gamma adjustment from the monitor or video card settings give an advantage. Plus, we sleep at night.......yes, we humans sleep...at night...9 our of 10 dentists agree. Also, why the unnatural head bounce/bob when moving forward while jogging? It feels cartoony. We evolved to see the world fairly smoothly when moving, same problem with the side-to-side movement when running. Battlefield, starting with 2142 I think has done it the best, they just give a very small hint of the movements your making, truer to real life. Can we reign that in a little bit? Look at Chronicles of Riddick Butcher Bay as a good, although too exaggerated IMO, example. -------------------- One thought occurred to me, that the civil war in Ukraine that is sadly happening is what is effecting development and if that is the case know that I don't intend for this to make you feel bad and to just be taken as some constructive criticism.

How to make DayZ great again (by LIRIK and Shortyyguy)
libertine replied to -Gews-'s topic in General Discussion
LESS COMPLICATED???????????????????????????????????????????????? lol, are you kidding me, they already took out a ton of Arma sophistication, like hotkeys. We used to be able to double press forward to get up fast and start running from the prone position, something very handy (and REALISTIC) when the bullets start flying. Gone. Why? They should add in all sorts little natural movement behaviors IMO. less complicated.... we can't even turn our heads all the way around when on a ladder. I wish the devs would utilize the alt key as a modifier to build in all kinds of more sophisticated movement mechanics. The beauty of the alt key is that it can be pressed while the other fingers are still moving the player around. Since jump in DayZ is not used very often, perhaps the space bar should be used as a modify as well. I think they should continue on with the direction they're going, they could really made something special. With modding, it can just be one of many optional play styles, making DayZ standalone fit a larger variety of tastes and just be a base for some awesome mods, I think i'd agree with that. That said, I do agree with 1,2 and 3. I've been watching Mr.Nobody's stream for awhile and when he finds a helicopter crash, there is nothing but clothing. A lot is still in the process of being changed I know/hope. But will say if you are going to create a game with this little loot and variety, or loot like it is now in completely predictable places, IMO, you will need to compensate in other areas with the amount of interesting other things to do/see/hear in the game, but I have a hard time imagining that happening with the dev pace so slow. 4 years for what we have now? MechWarrior Online and Elite dangerous are good examples of games with gameplay that is very slow and/or monotonous (for the average person I think), where in IMO it was really critical for the success of the games to compenstate for the lack of interest in the gameplay area by making everything else more captivating and interesting. Like IMO MWO should have had awesome sfx for huge mech's internal operations and weapons, but they were super simple, the maps and map visuals were simple (until recently), the sophistication of the movement was simple sine wave up and down yank fest stuff from the 80s. In the case standalone, with such a lesser degree of PVP/interaction compared to the mod, I think they need to really compensate on other areas. Zombies for example are an area of interest they could focus on to make a survival experience more interesting to compensate for the potentially very monotonous survival gameplay they are going for. Tons of realistic client side zombie animations/behaviors kicked off by the server side code to help create a sense of zombies being "alive" and real and not feel just some basic code afterthough working in the background. -
Found Brian Hicks youtube channel - faith in dev partially restored :D
libertine posted a topic in General Discussion
I just found Brian Hicks, the creative director's youtube channel from before he was involved in standalone development and I am glad to say I think we are in good hands despite the somewhat slow progress of the games development pace. Also, he sounds like the ship captain guy from Serenity/Fire Fly, Nathan Fillion I think his name is, he even talks/act like him, its weird, but very cool. Major points right there :) But he also has tons of experience with DayZ as it mainly has been in the past and is well used to using all the rare weapons and stuff. My only worry is that based on his videos, since he ran with a group and seemed to have tons of funs with other people, he might be unfamiliar with how it is to play alone and only rely on the game itself for the fun your having. I think solo players really need a bit more stuff to do, more interesting things to find, places to explore because they don't have other people making them laugh while running around Chernerus. Anyway, still fun to watch. Some of his videos are hilarious. How could this guy F up DayZ development. Faith partially restored. Yay eh....so long as there are no choppers involved and DayZ development doesn't start being run from a helicopter, I think we're okay..... -
One thing about the birds sounds that might help a little bit if they worked on is that I think there is too much echo. Like if you get your birds sound effects from a jungle environment, the sound is probably going to bounce off loads of jungle plants and tree leaves and its going to sound like you are in a bit of a chamber. I get that feeling from these sounds but the environment doesn't match. Removing the reberb, hopefully with an effective and simple audio program function, but perhaps with new sounds unfortunately, might help.

Back to DayZ standalone after 3 years - thoughts
libertine replied to libertine's topic in General Discussion
Let me first say that I have now learned that they are in the mddle of making some big changes, so if you are a dev, please understand I get what I am concerned about you may still be working on. I was happy to find out that the maker of Tavania was leading the project as that is a great map that looks realistic, is expansive and has a lot of interting nooks and views, but....they say they are not building a map. Maybe Brian, because of his map building experience, feels it will be super easy to make a new map, which isn't a bad sign. I am just so done with Chernerus its not funny. One idea that I think would be nice is if they could build in some nice occlusion culling for apartment buildings so we can make a real city with a good size and also some underground areas, possibly large underground areas with little hidden entrances here and there. One idea I had for apartment buildings is creating a boulding box for each room and if the player view point doesn't have line of sight to the bounding box, then don't render any of the interior of that room. That would be one tool to help build up a vast city area like an I am Legend-like map or like in The Division. I don't even think it looks or sounds that much better. Sure there is some things, like the gun sounds are better, but now less varied or interesting IMO. There is a reason they use inaccurate weapon sounds in movies. They sound cool and interesting. Realism is great, but I've got some bad news for those who think realism is everything. Take a look around you in real life. Look at the realism and check out those incredible graphics, the soft shadowing OMG!. Borrrrrrriiiiiinggggg. My point is, the goal I think should be believability and entertainment, not realism. Life is just too short. But this is a highly personal thing, because, continuing with the gun sound example, someone who shoots guns all the time probably has his immersion broken if the guns don't sound real. But....moving on....trees. Trees are more varied and detailed, but they have gotten smaller and less magnanimous and less impressive in some ways. The shore/waves sound is something I really miss, even the crazy loudness of it. Same with the wind-through-trees sound that I don't hear anymore. Both lended an expansive feeling to the environment IMO. Are we seriously not going to have guns like L85A2 or M4A1 Holo? Check out the gun list for the Origins mod (for Tavania btw). I rarely saw any of the higher end guns, only had the L85a2 or the M4A1 holo once I think) but they were there, somewhere out there for me to find and roam the map with. http://dayz-origins.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons -
I've been in forests that were dead silent. It depends on the part of the world you are in. To my life experience, watching streams, the birds and the forest don't sound right, too loud, sometimes too varied, it sounds like I'm in a jungle. The shoreline sound is missing too. It was too loud sometimes in the mod and extended too far without falloff, but now its missing in situations where you should definitely hear it. They should have it be audiable from a distance, it was a pleasant sound when it was appropriate, same with the wind sound which was very atmospheric IMO. The new wind sound is like a sound of wind you hear when you are indoors and the wind is pushing itself in. Heres the old sound. The sound of the waves is also here at 16:56 if you don't remember it.
-
Just the 3D is awesome and makes it worth it IMO. I played 100s of hours in 3D on a 46" 3DTV sitting right on my desk giving me a horizontal FOV about the same as the Rift. The 3D turned the screen into a window, it was some of my best gaming experiences because Chernarus was so beautiful and haunting. Same with Tavania.

That's cool. I see areas far east of Seattle, Washington like that a lot. There is something about the older buildings and Russian (or...eastern) of DayZ that I like better than modern U.S. buildings though. I'm also moving near a Skyrim'esqe area, lol. Like no kidding Skyrim mountain range. I've been wandering around our massive industrial area in downtown Seattle recently taking reference photos for game art and possibly/hopefully one day a DayZ mod or another game like DayZ. But its fun to wander through these areas, it looks totally post apocalyptic sometimes, with dirt and garbage everywhere and rusty machines sitting in overgrowth. Pretty cool. Yet I still find the lonely, sparce buildings in DayZ like in Chernogorsk(how it used to be...) more interesting. Just found this site, very cool if you like abandoned industrial stuff. http://www.oblivionstate.com/forum/ Exploring with Josh on youtube is pretty fun. If you like Chernobyl, these two channels are pretty cool IMO.

0.62 Sounds make it hard to differentiate
libertine replied to Henk Grunn's topic in General Discussion
This sounds fine to me. Just make in non-repetitive and not annoying. Forest sounds like a jungle tho. -
Naw, I mean getting up quicker from prone, ie, lying on the ground. Arma 2 feature. A feature of real life as well. People tend to move a bit quicker when the bullets start flying. If I were making a game, I would definitely consider adding a movement mode toggle with possibly 3 states to make movement look and feel a little more situationally appropriate with endurance limits for things like panic sprinting.
-
While there at it, if they could put "double tap forward key" to jump up from prone quicker (like we used to be able to), so I can't move at realisticly situational speed when the bullets start flying to try and keep them from ripping half my face off, that would be nice. Or we can just keep taking the cool bits of sophistication from Arma we were lucky to have out of DayZ.

The hardcore servers i play on are constantly crashing. & "Animations: Zombie attack animations polished." Um, what? Polishing is what you do when you are about finished with your work. Please, please, tell me that was a mistake because what i see in game is some of THE worst A.i. behavior i've ever seen in a game. Please tell me the zombie A.i. we see in the game is 2% of what you have planned. I remember hearing a quote from Rocket about animation being a huge framerate killer and i wondered if maybe he got that idea from comments about made about the controversial Euclideon Infinite Detail engine, that it had no animation and to which some assume resulted solely from a lack of animation, which WAS NOT NEARLY the only contributing factor.
