That would be awesome! Maybe I'll try some of the fishing myself, too. The lack of netting kept me from doing it, but I do camp near a lake and go fishing with the rod quite often. But most of the time I hunt. I can't wait until the introduce drying racks and possibly a way to smoke food. I really hope the amount of canned goods is gonna drop significantly when the animal AI and population is more complete.

Because some hotkeys always get deleted after logging off. It drives me nuts too. When you use New UI you actually see the items are removed from the hotkeys and can/have to reassign them. Every time you log in you have to reassign some keys. At least in the next update, we'll see a much improved version of the new UI and these issues will hopefully be gone. It can still take a while, until bows are sorted out though. I expect this to happen, shortly after the introduced the compound bow, since its mechanics will be more advanced and probably be the base for the improvised bow then, too.

Did you know the FAL actually has a grenade launcher option? It might be we'll see some attachments like that, too! This one also has a carry handle. Here's a video:

They really should spawn more netting! I'm not a huge fan of running up and down the coast, but when it happens I usually find half a dozen boats, which usually have 1 or 2 items at them, mostly pants :( I don't see why netting must be that rare and I don't think there should only be those boats at the coast, but also near the bigger lakes around the map. Like the one at Zaprudnoe or the two lakes near Berezino. There are still some static boats there, but those stopped spawning netting ages ago. I also don't like how Rify is really empty and an unused area. I hope they add some interior to the ship, maybe even some cargo, so it can be a more worthwhile place to visit. It's a shame to waste these pretty places for nothing. What happens when you use the fishnet in the ocean? I know the small fish trap (cut plastic bottle with knife) catches sardines, but does the net trap catch just more sardines? OR MAYBE A SHARK ;) I also still have to check if we need to fillet Sardines or if they will cook as a whole. I see a reason to remove guts, but they are really easily cooked as a whole on a stick. I'm looking forward to having the normal fishing rod. I hope it will be a bit more interesting than fishing with the improvised rod. I like all the survival stuff a lot and think there will probably be mods at some point that deal more with hunting+survival than with the whole shooting people thing. I know that's a different game, but somehow I enjoy it more than the military aspects. It just needs a lot more work.

Yeah that doesn't work. I don't know why people give advice when they don't know about these things themselves. If that still worked you wouldn't have made your post in the first place...

That's been complained about several times. The last update made it more realistic to chamber bullets and load magazines into the conventional guns, but the arrows seem to have been rendered useless by it. I could still use the crossbow with a quiver, but that's probably, because it equals a magazine in code, wheras an arrow is counted as single bullets. There is probably a fix in the making. I suppose pressing "r" to reload the arrows doesn't work either? It works with magazines for pistols and most rifles. The only thing you can do then to reload them without going into the interface is to put each arrow individually onto a hotkey. That's a waste of hotkeys, but it may be the only way to reload without intermission. Also, there was a bug where you can put arrows (add) into the quiver and they magically turn into bolts for the crossbow. Then you can pick them up and they magically turned back into arrows ^^ nobody knows what's going on. Idk if this error has been fixed, but since more important stuff doesn't, I would not suppose so; it my also only work with composite arrows or the ones with a bone tip. Just as an alternative, if you want to use the crossbow, but never find enough bolts. At least you can use proper reload with that (though it seems to take twice the time at the moment and was slow anyway).

I don't think you can even drive cars under water any more, since they won't start up. I found a Sedan near Skalisty Island in shallow water once, couldn't start it, replaced sparkplug and battery with pristine ones and they instantly got ruined again. Despite the fact you can drive them with ruined stuff above water, the Sedan wouldn't start up. You're welcome to try it out yourself, but I don't think the cars can submarine any more. Also, from what I've read the terrain near Debug Island makes it impossible to drive up there.

Heheh - fun post! Did you have to read it at school, or why the hate? I have no idea what it's about, but it sounds like some romantic bullshit novel. I've found some more books, one of them rather interesting: - Hindu Literature - by Hindus, I guess ;) Can't post a picture as photobucket is being crap once again. I've read a collection of stories translated from Hindu with the easy name of "Vetalapantschavinsati" (try saying that quickly three times - or once...) and it was quite entertaining. More of a moral compass, like "The Prince" by Machiavelli, but at the same time more or less a fairy-tale collection like "1001 Nights". I expect the Hindu Literature book to be somewhat similar and will try and take a loot at it, if I haven't already used it for fire. The trouble I have most of the time that in the process of looting the book has to go at some point, because I need the space.

Yeah I noticed that too. Quite surprised, but happily so. It should be noted though that this kind of setup is not the norm. If you build something like that on anything but the experimental or roleplay servers you are just making yourself a bigger target ;) What I like about the status report is that things like the "post processes" involve a great deal of visual enhancements, starting with better particle effects . including weather conditions like fog, smoke and storms/lighting down to a better-looking ambient occlusion and smaller improvements to the visibilty of fire and muzzleflash effects. I also like the "parallelization", which will make better use of the interplay between the different CPU cores and the GFX-cards, increasing the speed. When that is all working and the costs of those game economies are reduced, the devs can introduce (or re-introduce) systems like the horde-AI, which have been presented as WIP-concepts in the past. We've seen these new features tested and working in developer videos, but there is no point introducing them when the engine has trouble dealing with what is already in the game now. So these seemingly small additions will make a great deal of difference and I'm sure we are going to see more about the features you guys have inquired about, shortly after the 0.60 update. It may seem like this isn't a big update, featurewise, but it is a very important one. So I'm willing to wait and hope for the best, and I think we will be in for some surprises.

Yeah, like Zelot said, this is exactly how the trade zones in the mods work. In the mods you go there to sell guns and vehicles and buy other stuff like more guns and other vehicles. The Dayz idea is a bit different. Instead of a "god mode" (what this is essentially), there should be clans working on establishing bases that will get a reputation for trade. The clan members control who enters and make sure they leave their weapons at the gate (which means everyone has to be searched). Then you are brought to a tent for trading and smoke a shisha with the esteemed local warlord ;) Yet, I think you aren't completely wrong about your idea. I've been playing Ark and frankly I quit it, because small clans can't even think about fighting the big ones. Every night (when nobody was online), big clans would saddle up all their big dinos, prepare explosives and breach into all the bases worth of it. There was no way to defend against it, since nobody was home. So the next morning we would always begin at absolutely zero, which you only do so often, until you say: "fuck this game." And never play it again; I haven't even updated it in three months. I think there should be something like a neutral state, instead of a neutral zone. That would mean that to establish a base, several members of a group would have to "sign up" as the creators of that base. When they aren't online, the base cannot be torn down or affected in any way. As a sign for neutral state, the bases could show a blue flag or any other kind of symbol. Camps wouldn't be affected by this, they would be just like they are now. If not at least one member from the clan that setup the base is online every 48 hours for a duration of x-hours, or if the combined playtime of all members who set up that base is under ~10 hours a week, this base loses its neutral state ability and can be attacked at all times, even when nobody is online; this way you prevent people from building bases and then disappearing. If a base hasn't been accessed for "x"-number-of-days, it should also lose its neutral state to the same extend. Another thing I could imagine is that bases will draw infected towards them, so they would surround the base like a natural shield, making it very hard for groups to break into them. That would however pose a problem to the base owners aswell, because they would have a hard time getting in and out of their base every time. --- The reason I suggest this is not because I fear battles around bases, but because I know there will be exploiters who will do nothing else but attack and rape bases when their owners aren't online. If a base is attacked and won over it should either involve a real fight or pose a real thread. The attackers could wait until the owners leave their base, before starting their break-in, but then they cannot know when they return or if anyone else will spawn there. It should add a real sense of danger to the situation, instead of the mind-numbing break in people performed in Ark, where they would just keep hitting the same bloody wall for half an hour, until it gave in and they could enter the base. In my opinion a lot speaks for putting things in a neutral state and it actually adds to the realism, because in real life, you would be sleeping in that base and would take notice of people charging it. If you're offline and lose all your stuff that will just lead to an endless circle of building the most pointlessly confusing base layout, in order to make it as hard as possible for people to break in while you are offline.

I play on both, 1p is public and the 3p is private. I'm not a fan of completely full servers, but the private hive is actually fuller on the weekend than most 1p servers ever get. I have a strategy of decoy camp building and I also build inside and on top of houses a lot. There are a lot of industrial structures nobody walks/climbs onto at the moment. I even build in churches and temporarily inside the gym (though the gym is not a good place at all - it just looks fun). I'm not going to name my best spots, as you will find those yourself over time. I also doubt you are really exploring the whole map, because there are areas around Gorka/Berezino and from Ratnoe to Krasnostav which are hardly ever visited, have a great deal of (small) lakes and rivers that aren't on the map (good for hunting!) and patches of dense forest or rock to hide your camp at. Like I said - eventually every camp gets found, but you can hide them much better than most people do. It's just a matter of identifying the routes you never walked yourself. In a way, placing a camp is the most counter-intuitive thing to do, because your brain will always tell you "this is a great spot". It really takes some resisting the impulse to set up camp as quickly as possible, because once you do, you start filling them up and then can't move anymore. It also helps to make a decoy or "public camp" not too far from your own camp, where you can store all the lesser needed/less valuable items and which you can set up for trading (with a message in a tent). The map is still huge and in fact, it's 4x larger than anything else I've seen played, including Fallout 4. Sure, there are no instances or underground areas, like in e.g. Ark, but this is already a very large map. Take into account that at some point there will be a stamina system, so people can't just blaze about the map as they wish any more. It will also be harder to keep yourself healthy and fed, creating further obstacles for the marathon-camp-seeker. Of course, at the same time we'll have more vehicles, so that will even things out a bit. But I think with the future options and hopefully some new items (like camo-nets and traps) to camoflage our camps better, we won't have too much trouble keeping our tents a lot safer than now. The only trouble I have is that I'll most likely blow myself up with my own traps much more than anyone looking for my camps ;)

Hmm, but in the mods they had the pretty terrible LOD system from Arma. So things would pop up at different times and be visible from miles away, before the rest of the scenery even loaded in. I'm thinking that when we have particles added and maybe some ground fog, there will be places where you can hide a camp pretty well. Even on foot you have to get quite close to spot a tent. And with a heli, flying that low could be a real risk. I agree though that the little bird is the perfect tool for spotting camps. It's made to fly low, you can put people to spot on each side and it can land on a piece of paper, it's so small. I also expect we can rappel down at some point. I've been wondering, if maybe the devs will opt to not show camps from out of the air, because that's the only way to stop people abusing the choppers for camp hunting. I also don't see how currently you could stop someone from landing inside your base, unless you mine the place and renew the mines every fooking day; risking to blow yourself up in the process aswell... There are a lot of issues I have with the camp creation versus realistic gameplay (visuality) at the moment. One thing I can think of is that there may be more rewarding places created in the future, which can only be reached by chopper; or which can also be reached by boat, but require a more dangerous route. At the same time, aviation fuel would have to be so limited that it forces you to make a decision: go looking for bases and risk getting shot. Or go to the unique places to pick up gear you can't find elsewhere and save your chopper for later. However, at some point even the most unique places have been razed and the chopper pilots will go about finding camps. There really is no way of thinking around that, just minimizing the damage. It's a great thing to fly in the mods every once in a while, but the problem I have with it in the mods is: either you have too many choppers in the air, so nobody takes a car any more, or you have too few choppers and everyone will hunt you and shoot at you, making it a pain in the ass to fly around and refuel. I guess the latter is what will happen in Dayz and choppers will probably only make sense to be used for clans who can protect them. Which means most players will not even be able to fly around and are then also subjected to people assaulting them and their camps from the air. But what can we do? It's a much requested feature and I don't think the devs yet think about the long-term consequences of features they're adding.

My camps almost never get found and I never place them anywhere near the edge of the map, either. There are even some places in towns where you can put camps at and people will walk right by them. People often misjudge the amount of space available in the less-traveled areas and around mountains. The problem is, these areas are often not well-accessible and too remote from any good loot locations, so they won't be used more, until we have more reliable and easier to maintain vehicles (bikes, etc). To me it is a challenge to find actually good places to camp at, and I've been doing this since Arma II's mods, so I've had camps discovered and rebuild them in a better place. It's trial and error, but there will never be a camp that cannot be found. If you make a huge uniform forest area around the map, all you'll achieve is yourself and others getting lost and people spreading out there for dull hours just looking for camps. There will be bases, so if a camp isn't big enough or gets too big to be hidden at all that's the next option. Of course bases will be broken into, but there will be ways to protect them, at least. Personally, I prefer many small stashes and will leave the big base building to others. I've had a camp on a pretty crowded server for over a month now and nobody found it, yet. Admittedly, it's the best place I ever build at, so I can't give it away. But if you run around towns and think about places you never visit there, you are already close to having found a great spot; there just isn't a perfect spot.

The nobility, skill and courage of french #dayz players summed up in 67 secs

I'm not sure about the last one, but you might have heard of one called "The French Revolution" ;) Here is the John Cleese quote for you, at around 1 Minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ULvKtcmWgo I don't know who taught you history, but I find it amusing you have not the faintest idea what a civil war is. It doesn't have to be called "civil war" (in the name) to be one. Oh you US-Americans... Have a nice day. -

If it's not a war with an external enemy it's called a civil war. And they've had a good dozen of those. Besides, it's a John Cleese joke. -
What's that about Elks you mentioned, Jo? Are there elks in the game? I've only seen deer so far, but would love some moose or elk. Later for camps it might be fun to be able to make trophies from the heads and hang them outsde or inside the base. That could also be done with human heads or zombies, so you'd see if who lives there is a cannibal, hunter, infected-killer or a badass, who mixes it all up. I'd definitely want tropies - if fishing gets expanded it would also be nice to have a little bit randomized fish sizes and a trophy option for them. They could be like calling cards for our bases to identify, who lives there and what they like doing. I didn't read everything, but I suppose you guys already named tracking or some kind of indicators (e.g. trace near lakes, pointing the direction of the deer; bark eaten off young trees; broken shrubbery) in order to find out, if there are animals around - and what kind of animals there are. Boars would leave a track through shrubbery, while deer would eat bark and gather around waterholes. You're totally right that it is annoying to keep checking the same places without having a clue what brings out the animals or when they are there. In another thread I added time of day to one of the features for animal hunting. Deer will mostly come out and feed at night and are a bit more cautious during a full moon.

Welcome to Dayz ;) I played a lot of Arma II myself and the map is really different in some aspects. First of all it is larger and the new towns in the north are probably the nicest ones created for the game. Then there are places that are nice to explore once, but don't offer a lot of gameplay options at the moment (Rify/ship and Prison Island). Apart from that, there are some nice buildings that aren't in the Arma series (School - looks nicer than the ones in the mod/e.g. Taviana; Clocktower in Novodmitrovsk). The game currently consists of three zones, so you will find different loot, depending on weather you are closer to the airfield or to the coast. It's quite interesting to find out where some items start spawning and learn where to find things you need. Overall this system isn't really that diverse yet, but you'll still find a few nice things. I like the hiking paths in Dayz. There are actually some maps online (there is a group on Steam for hiking routes), but generally the paths are bald patches in the forest or the meadows, which are usually a bit brighter than their surrounding. They are particularly fun to explore with the 4x4 Lada Niva, but if you follow them on foot, you might see some nice places, too. It's more for the lonewolf though, as you won't often meet other people. Hiking paths will usually take you to holiday camps or lakes/rivers and the likes. Holiday camps are new in the game and I've found gas cookers there more often than elsewhere. Apart from that they have no real use, but it's nice to find them all. Finally, the hunting is pretty cool, if you're into that kind of thing. Sneak up to a group of animals (deer, cow, sheep, fox, chicken, domestic pig, wild-pig, rabbit) or startle one of the smaller ones as you walk by and be quick enough to shoot it. Chicken feathers and bones can also be used to craft arrows with a stick. The bigger animals will give you fur, which you can tan into leather, using fertilizer inside a barrel. (Fertilizer can also be made inside barrels from plant material - which you gte by growing veggies and guts from the animals you skinned for their fur); fertilizer isn't that hard to find though. You can also craft a sling trap and catch a rabbit, but that is not really exciting to do ;) it happens when you wait at ~150 m distance from the trap. In the small apartment houses you can find three kinds of tents: military, car, civilian. In combination with the barrels that already gives a decent option for creating camps. I usually find tents in the medium size apartment houses in the north; the smaller settlements seem to have more tents than the big cities. And if that isn't enough you can craft a fishing rod and bait (worms can be dug up from the ground with a knife, or found when you make a garden patch) then you fish and cut up the fish and either boil it in a pan/cookingpot and with the help of a stone oven (crafted), a tripod and pot, a camping gas cooker, or on a makeshift hobo stove, crafted from a barrel (punch holes in it with an axe or knife). You can also use a long stick from cutting a tree to grill the meat/fish individually; just be carefully, currently the stick will go on your back and your axe goes in your hands and on the ground when you putit away. Make sure to check for your axe after cutting trees. There is a lot more survival in Dayz SA than in the mods, and I hope you'll enjoy some of it. When it rains, make sure to wear rainproof clothing or go inside. If you got wet, it's best to make a fire and get dry. Sorry, these may not all be pro-tips, but since you're a bit new I thought it couldn't hurt sharing.

You know why the French had so many civil wars? - So they could win a war, occasionally. I've played with English, Norwegian, Swedish, Russian, Spanish, Romanian and god knows what other nationalities. But with the French in Dayz, I've always had trouble, as soon as they have a working weapon. But most of them are terrible shots, so just keep running (unless it's a behaviour experiment you're conducting) and don't react to "stand still, I don't shoot" or "I 'ave something for you". Chances are you can get out alive. Also there never seems to be just one French at a time. One French is probably harmless, but since they always come at least in a pair, we'll never know. Occasionally I've wondered, if they just misunderstood me, but I've given them the benefit of the doubt far too often. I really don't know what's the issue. I like a good fight, but I've always, always experienced the same sneaky execution attempts like you have. And since it's never a one-on-one, I usually died, too but I made damn sure I wasn't the only one. And now I just ignore French-English speaking people and go my own way. Really feels wrong to pick out the French in particular, but out of all the incidents I've had with French players, even since the mod days, maybe 1% ended non-violently or in a fair fight. It's so odd! My favorite Dayz nationality are probably Russians. I've been killed by Russians and even I had to smile about how smart they went about it and how accurate they shot. That's something I learned from and I can respect, but this blatant lying and the constant talking that many French do pisses me off to no end. Again apologies to the French players, who don't act like that, but the majority of your countrymen drag you down in my rating. -
I didn't see that. He doesn't need it anyway, heh. Yes, many animations are missing and it is much too fast to take things out of the car. I wouldn't mind, if it was easy to put them in (because - you know - danger), but if it took longer to remove something. Perhaps sometimes even more than one step? E.g. - open hood animation, release cables from battery animation, take battery out animation. That would make it a lot harder to hijack someones car. These guys were dicks, you were nice enough to stop and there was lots of space for them on the bus. I guess that kind of shit will always happen (same as people that destroy camps by packing tents), but in the future, at least there will be less competition, because there are more vehicles. I'm really looking forward to motorbikes. Always was my favorite mode or transportation in the mod, just sucks for having no storage space. 2 things I noticed: you were talking in car mode when you "beeped-beep" the friendly guy, so he could probably not hear you, unless you were right next to him. When the 4x4 wheels were all ruined it was possible that is slid down the hill or got stuck in a tree. Happened to my bus when I logged off. Best to keep them i gear, but maybe that doesn't even help. If you want to, you can call me when you need protection for the bus again. I always have this idea that two people should get out whenever the bus stops and stand watch/guard, so no shit happens. Too many good people play alone, while a lot of idiots play together and kill all the fun. My Steam ID is SinKing, should say Hamburg/Germany. I play mostly 1p, so if you need me, I have to equip on your server, first. Anyway, hope to meet you ingame, because you are a really good player and I like your vids. Small tip': if you want the videos voted up, maybe ask people to give your videos a quick vote on youtube, since we can't do it when it plays windowed on forums. Cheers and so long!

You know what just occured to me? Where the hell was that player getting a jerry can from? It can't have been in his backpack, so the only solution is he took it from the car? Really confused about this one and why it stayed in my mind for two days only to pop up today ^^

Yeah, good suggestions. The notes are only good when you put them in a tent/barrel/vehicle. It's a start. But I liked one bug in particular, when you could throw paper and it would stick to things like trees, walls/ceiling and the road; they were hovering a bit though. I thought that was intentional and used it for target practice with the crossbow to figure out the scope. I agree, you could do fun things with these papers, if they stayed in the world a bit longer. It also reminds me a little bit of the notes you could write in Demon Souls to warn other players: Another book I've never seen. No idea what it is. Sounds old. - The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justfied Sinner - James Hogg
-
I used to have three bibles on me once, because I kept finding them (in the small chapel) and had one at 50% from the day before. I tried going around as a Jehova's Witness and force people to accept my bible, but unfortunately I found no one that day to throw them at. I want to play as priest - it was one of my favorite outfits in the mod; plus you can pretend you're Batman. I never found Sun Tzu. I now wonder, if "The Prince" by Machiavelli is in the game. I think there is at least one more book by Jane Austen in the game. I found "Great Expectations" at one point, I think. I found the last plainsmen too and thought it looked cool. I don't think I've read a Western in my life, unless you count Karl May's books, which are complete hogwash. I forgot about that book (see? this thread already helped one person! ;)) I think there is at least one more Western in the game and somehow I associate these books the most with Rocket; maybe they were part of his selection? The Red Bage of Courage sounds interesting, it's fun when something is meta like this in a game. A book I remember finding only once, which I held on to for a long time was a Russian Learning book (at least I think it was Russian). To make things perfect, I found it at a school, too. Reading in game is just for lulz. I'll never go through a full book there, either. But there are some really good books in the game and some I've never heard about or forgot about. I began looking at almost all the books I find, even though originally I just needed paper to write silly notes at my camps. I wish there was an animation for reading. I haven't yet been shot, while standing in a house and filing through a book. That would be hilarious, if someone came in and I'm standing there in full gear and flipping pages without a care in the world. It would also be a pretty good "away from keyboard" animation, if you needed to take - let's say - a shit ;) and don't want to run out of town and into a tree first.
-
The blackening is happening again. I lost that other character, but I'm quick to gear up. The UMP is really amazing. I shot infected at ~300m today with the ACOG scope aimed a little over their head. I still like the AKS-U, but hands on - the UMP is really a lot better:
-
You have the beard of a 9-year old, but your pimp hat and $ shades give away that you were separated from your parents and had to eat wolf-meat. See how sensitive I get from just posting this thread? I can almost not feel my balls anymore - no wait, they dropped to the floor. I forgot: I have balls of steel. As for the next book on my list. Found this today: - The Last Man - by Mary Shelley It's almost like someone knew what they were doing when they selected the books for the game. I'm gonna start a library at my public camp, as usually it's in Olsha ^^ I forgot what the server name is, but if you search "Norway" and 1p you'll find it (it's "#1" of the norway servers). I also run a bus there and will probably start asking people to bring me books to pay their fare. I'll probably get shot, too ;)
-
Great, man! Your videos get better all the time. Nice editing! I cracked up when this guy pulled out the gas can and started hitting people :) Surprised you survived that long and it again shows that not everbody has a kill-on-sight attitude. I tend to get that though when I'm extremely well geared (scoped and silenced weapons, lots of ammo); I always think they'll kill me for my stuff. I haven't seen a car in days now. Either they are all stored away or I'm taking the wrong routes. When all four wheels are wrecked, cars should respawn after the next server restart, methinks. The incident with the bus shows, why it's good that we need tools in the future to unhook battery and sparkplug. It sucks that people can just run up to the bus and take the battery out.
