Afraid to die - are you?

Ah, damn. I actually fired up the PC and felt manly enough to keep surviving. Guess what? It said: you are dead! I went like: no fucking way and connected to annother server. That one placed me in the debug plains without any gear. Since I follow the news on this forum, I knew I just had to reconnect - and bam - now I'm in Cherno. All the stuff is back. Goddamn, of all the places ^^ This game has a nerve ;) I ran around for an hour or so, managed to evade some survivors at the apartments and look for stuff myself (my 9mm SD is very helpful here). And now I'm actually a little out of town already and the guy is still alive. Perhaps my dude will live on in the virutal realm, if I just leave him be :) It's really stressy now. I don't want to keep pushing on to Elektro. This is exactly the worst case scenario I had in mind.Thank you ,Dayz, for being like that :)

Afraid to die - are you?

I get that. I played a few days with a group of 12-14 year old, and I'm 35 yo. They helped me in Cherno, and I accepted the Skype invite. Didn't know what I was getting into. First, I had to listen to a bunch of "best songs ever".Then they were having a yo-momma battle, etc. It just went on and on. They were just playing like mad and usually didn't even get to the northern parts of the map. When I suggested to go to Beresino and they found a leisure boat on the way they were squaling with joy like a bunch of piglets. We then had to try out the lame ass boat for 20 minutes, while being in the open and always in range of other players. I had to make the decision of leaving them behind and have never joined another group, since. Also, my guy is still alive from back then.

Afraid to die - are you?

I guess that is the key.It is more fun playing with others sometimes and the game surely isn't made to be played alone. Yet, I often really like the loner feeling and I actually relax playing Dayz, lol. So, I hope in the retail game there will be some ways to get on/off traveler groups without fear of backstabbing and just to travel together for a little while. What annoys me about playing in groups is the constant chatter on Skype.

    So criticism not allowed here?

A lof people seem to forget that the Dayz code has already leaked and the idea isn't exactly owned by anyone anyway. So I guess, whoever made Lingor Island will keep developing that and probably take a different direction than the commercial game. I didn't know who made it or what Dayz is exactly, before I bought Arma II for it. However, all mods I played took ages to go standalone and had time to develop and grow, due to community help + feedback. Making Dayz into a second Alpha product, seems like cashing in, but I guess the real reason is, because they cannot do more on the current engine. So, look at this another way - you got the mod and it will stay; even though Rocket won't have anything to do with it. You get another game, which may be more stable and has alot of improved and new features. That's how it'll be ideally. However, I still don't trust the new engine to get rid of the technical problems. We'll just have to see how it works out. And hardcore Dayz fans will probably all get the Alpha anyway, in hopes of having a better game experience than with the current crowded servers.

    So criticism not allowed here?

I spend more time on these forums than trying to connect to Dayz and playing the actual game, lol. Always entertaining bashfest here. I love Dayz and the idea and freedom it gives you initially. I don't like the lack of further developement of the mod. So, I guess standalone is a must. However, I'll wait how it develops, first. I will follow these forums and the ones made for the retail game, and I'll carefully read the arguments there. There are a lot of promising games that make claims of all sorts of things, prior to development. We know Dayz works to some extend, but we also know Bohemia has an engine that isn't fit yet for such a game. They will have to improve netcode, write/use proper anti-cheat tools, get rid of the graphical glitches and improve/develop the actual game. That is a lot to do, and it should take 4 months on full throttle to even adress the most basic, technical issues. If they start now and release a new alpha, only change being it's on the next RV engine, nothing is won. The core problems are technical, get rid of these issues first. It's not impossible, but expensive. If I see Bohemia making these investments and if things sincerely improve for the commercial version, I'll buy it. If not, I'll buy something else. Customer choice prevails ;)

    So criticism not allowed here?

I would like some more info released, before I blindly buy myself into the commercial alpha. I played NMRIH - an actually great and bugfree mod for HL2 - when people kept telling me about Dayz and how great it is. They chose not to talk about any of the bugs and major problems this alpha suffers. That's how a lot of people here react to criticism - blind on that eye. So I bought Combined Operations and had bought OA before, because I loved Arma, since its early days. I wouldn't say that was a mistake, but had I known the bugginess that is Dayz, I might have waited longer and for a more stable version; or even for the commercial alpha. So, if Bohemia expects people to jump that train, I'd require a little more info, this time. The engine works well enough for Arma and I've never complained about OA. It does what it needs. The same goes for the CLR mod and Project Reality - all are working mods. But Dayz isn't.It has more problems than any other mod I've seen. The thing about Dayz is, it let's us speculate a lot and fantasize about future features, because all that is in now are zombie spawns and item spawns. So there are technical issues with the engine, which I'd like to hear more about the solutions. As well as problems with tools, story and goals, which are absent from the current build. Dayz gathers statistics, but the final experience should be more than days survived and players killed. Could be more, at least. More information never hurt anyone, and I hope we'll find out, soon.
  7. Why is that I run Six Launcher and most of the servers haven't updated to the next version. Do these people prefer the old version, or is there another reason? SRY - it was meant to be 30% not 70% - fingers faster than brainsss....

    Lingor Island Chit Chat.

Lingor looks like the action version of Chernarus. Everytime I watch a video, I see people running like crazy in front of hordes of zombies. I'm not sure that's the game I want to see Dayz become. In fact, I can understand why Rocket doesn't support the mod, despite the interesting setting and accessible buildings. To me, a zombie game should feel a lot like Dayz. I like the quiet moments, but I don't like all the bugs and problems it has.

    NEED A BLOOD TRANSFUSION

If you manage to find (or already have) a knife, hatchet and matches you can kill some boars in the wood and cook some steaks. It's an easier way to get blood back when you're playing solo. However, maybe you're lucky and find someone. Else you could always check out those medics on their server.Google for dayz doctors or medics and you'll find them. Takes a day for them to respond, though. If you're still starting, trying and dying might be easier.

    DayZ Fan Art Thread

I made a sketch today, while relaxing after dinner. Thought about what might be a safe® place to be in the Dayz universe. An island in a swamp wouldn't be too bad. Infected would get stopped and swallowed by the swamp. When you need to cross you could shoot a rope over with an arrow. Perspective is a bit wonky, but I made this up, as I was going along. Sometimes the story comes with the sketch, not before it. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10191409/2012_08_06_swamp_refugee.jpg

So can this not be played alone?

I've been at/around the northern airfield for a couple of days and was just thinking about heading back south. The game told me I'm dead and put me on default planes the next time I connected. I connected again and was back in Cherno. Amazing enough I'm still alive. I carry an AK 74 and an M16A2 M203 +M9SD. I also have a Coyote Backback, ammo and grenades. So, I do have some gear to lose and will shoot anyone on sight. Yet, I didn't have to. Haven't had any problems avoiding the survivors in Cherno, since they make a lot of noise when they are moving in groups (shooting all the time). Now I'm out of town, going for Elektro. I think the rules for going into cities alone are: come well equipped, stay low/quiet and listen to your environment/evade groups. The problem is looting in those cities, since you need a bit of luck running around close to supermarkets and appartments without meeting survivors. I only saw a lot of dead ones yesterday. Unfortunately, the most important rule would be to shoot first if you have an encounter. These guys did the right thing, no matter if they were bandits or not. Big cities are the worst places to be, if you wanna make friends.
  13. I know the first one was asked in different way, but this is more direct: - will the engine for the retail Dayz be custom build, or will it use Arma 3's engine with modifications? - will the core concept of the Arma series (private server host, free 2 play, 1x purchase) stay the same for Dayz? Or will there be a centralized system for everything and several servers, controlled by BIS (like WOW=MMO)?
  14. S3V3N

Fix all of these things first!

How can anyone know what the next Real Virtuality Engine will be like? The artefacts have been in Arma (1) already. They just weren't that frequent or extreme. So, it might very well happen, they are in the next game, too. Any fix announced makes me suspicious about how they want to achieve this. I've only witnessed one patch so far, but for me 1.7.4.2 was the more stable version and more fun to play. It's almost unplayable for me now - and all within a couple of weeks and after one patch. 'Also, I am sure they don't want to give us more tools to fight back (against banditry), because just adding stuff that isn't working and conflicts with things that already cause conflict doesn't make sense. The team is looking for solutions to make this game more stable, but it works with an engine that even Rocket stated "was meant to be a military simulation" and not created for a massive online experience. I'd like to know about those two things: - will the engine for the retail Dayz be custom build, or will it use Arma 3's engine with modifications? - will the core concept of the Arma series (private server host, free 2 play, 1x purchase) stay the same for Dayz? Or will there be a centralized system for everything and several servers, controlled by BIS (like WOW=MMO)? I don't think the latter will apply, since - at least now - Dayz isn't meant to sustain a character for weeks or even years. Perhaps 0,05% of all players would be able to survive that long. It would however give back server control to the game developers. Yet, then you'd have a prescription based system or a big number of cash-shops (run by NPCs in-game), where you can buy ammo and certain guns, or even cars; that would completely ruin everything, imho. So, it is really difficult to create this game and not fail. Rockstar puts 100 Million $ + into either of their games. They buy the finest external components (Euphoria, Havok, etc.) to make sure the sandbox experience is controllable and gives THE ILLUSION of freedom. Here we are with Dayz, the one game that wants to give freedom for real, and we see how it doesn't work on too many ends. I've played games/mods in Alpha. Even Pre-Alpha. They were different. If your philosophy is ultimate freedom and you hand out dozens of guns, everybody is just going to shoot each other. There is a clear rule in writing that every author knows, which is: when you show a gun at the beginning of your movie, somebody is going to shoot it, in the end. This is your story. Not quite enough, but still a good start. I just hope it doesn't get worse from here.
  15. S3V3N

Fix all of these things first!

I think nobody minds organizing their gear in a backpack. What we do mind is guns getting eaten, because the backpack doesn't open, and you can only guess by the numbers how many slots you have left. Put a rifle in it and - bam, it's gone. I have very good hardware, I need it for my job. Yet, since the last update I get the triangle artefacts, EVERY single time I play. And they are usually in the direction I have to walk into. This happened right in Cherno today and I must have been blind lucky that nobody shot me/spotted me. Nothing fixed the issue , even though I remarked myself how changing gamma and resolution helps. It doesn't. And you don't wanna reconnnect when you're right in Cherno. So the graphical gliches really annoy me. After more than two years and massive amounts of patches, Bohemia still found no way to fix this? It's actually far worse on Dayz than on vanilla Arma, but whenever it occurs the game is over for me. - Also - let's not forget everybody has different bandwith and some of the problems with zombies spawning may not be the same for other players. I've seen zombies spawn right in the walls of a hut or inside a wall when I was only a few meters away. However, I've only seen that happen on servers that lagged a lot for me. It's almost classic MMO style sometimes, when you stand ten meters away from an infected and he hits you nonetheless. Despite these known issues (that other MP games have too), I think the Infected AI is brilliant and they are interesting in their movement patterns. Unfortunately it seems like the infected never switch from one pattern to another. They are brilliant to counter, as long as you are crawling. If you move faster, you can easily get by tons of them and shoot the ones you have to. I almost never look at zombies now any more. My dude is a week old ingame and all I'm afraid of are graphic bugs, backpack issues and other players.
  16. What's the meaning of the message I often see while connecting, when another player joins. It says they use a modified datafile. Is this an indication of a hacker, or does it mean something else? I don't think it says it with every player that connects, so I'm a bit suspicious. Any Ideas?
  17. Ait, thx for the info. Thought it can't be something too bad with the frequency it was happening.
  18. I also get a lot of "bad version" and disconnects from the servers. There are different beta versions for 1.7.2.4? How is this gonna help, I wonder? It's already bad enough to wait for connection and now it takes me 10-20 tries before I actually find a server I can play. The only workaround for me is to write down servers I play and check my records every now and then. Judging from todays experience I spent at least an hour trying to connect to servers and played roughly 1:30h, before the server restarted.

    Lingor Island Chit Chat.

So they took the buildings from Operation Arrowhead and made a map. I've been wondering why that wasn't possible, because these buildings can almost all be entered. But they have the wrong look for Chernarus, and I guess taking vanilla Arma map made more sense to Rocket. At least he knew that the map itself wasn't causing any issues. Operation Arrowhead's Map with zombies would be a bit strange. It's too large and empty. This is definitely still Dayz - they see 2 other survivors and shoot them without a word... I'll stick with Dayz and my rainy Chernarus. In fact - lately I play a lot more OA than Dayz. At least OA loads up in a few minutes and I can play some.

    Battleye's a joke...

I think people think too little about how Arma is set up. It's not a central server system (except for the ones that store our character). Servers can be made by anyone 'n anywhere. If WOW would be run that way, imagine the kind of hacks we'd have seen. But no, Blizzard puts a shitload of money into keeping the control over their game and sealing it from the real world. That's why it works. That's why it's prescription-based. WarZ - I fail to ever look it up, because the one screenshot I saw was so weak I almost puked. However, it will probably finance itself by prescription and advertising, or rather a cash shop. They will also try to keep things running their way. Just like Mortal Online and every of the other MMOs does for protection. The Arma system is just incredibly vulnerable to hacking, not because you can alter scripts, but because there is no control over who does it and when. You'd have to be admin and read the changelog, hours after the hacker is gone. Then, if he came via proxy he can just keep coming back and back again. Or there is probably even another way, which I can't think of right now. Arma should have long released something like G-Mod, because the scripting is almost the best part of the engine. The fact that original scipts (like Rocket's) can be ripped that easy, makes if difficult to believe for me that the same engine can run a retail version of Dayz. (Even if Dayz' engine is a modfied version of the Arma engine, it will use the same source code). If they solve these problems, they are gonna solve them for both, Arma and Dayz. And I'm looking forward to the day.

    Lingor Island Chit Chat.

Oh, it's not legit? Because I thought a Haiti-like scenario would fit the game/mod very well. It could be interesting to see an island that was still recovering from a natural desaster, e.g. Tsunami (you'd see construction sites, rebuilding, etc). It would also make a lot of sense to have power shut down in a scenario like this, just as a precaution. A lot of things could still be operational, but you have to find out where and what is. It seems easy as pie to rip the original scripts from Arma II mods. It happend to the CLR mod, which had some offspring, too. I see a lot of promise in a scenario like this. Islands are perfect locations for dystopian settings (jurassic park, island of dr moreau, Dead Island, etc). I can't seem to connect though, servers are either locked or have me waiting forever. Even though it's not legit, I'd like to have seen and figured out what it's like. From what I heard a lot more buildings can be entered, which is a good thing, imho.

    [Problem]spawn as a bird

As far as I remember the bird-bug was an early form of anti-cheat protection (in original Arma) , which mainly applied to people, who didn't buy the game. However, it also seemed to occur for all kind of random reasons, so I'm not sure why it happens now. You might try and start up vanilla Arma II and create a new character. It's supposed to help with the other "animal bugs", so I don't see why it wouldn't apply here.

    DayZ Fan Art Thread

It said my "quota is full" when I used the advanced editor. Since you also uploaded 2 images, I guess it's the same for you. It sucks we can upload only two images, especially since every one you upload is really amazing. I loved the first one with the dude inside the coin laundry, eating. Loved the second one and third one too. I would really like to paint with that grime and grit too, but I'm not sure how you and some other people achieve this painted look. Must be some kind of texture involved, right? Keep it up, love to see more. I've been writing three pages of dialog today for a cartoon series I wanna start. If you're interested chat me up, maybe I can do the writing and you the painting. Think you'll do a better job, overall.

    Banditry exploded

I think a lot of this depends on the stage of the world and the stage of the infection at that time. Sure enough humans would try to keep their humanity and try to live and work together, at first. As long as they believe in any kind of authority returning, they would also be afraid of having to face consequences for their actions. But in "the Road" you can see how it works when there is absolutely nothing left and it's either you or him. In "Platoon" you see how war makes people think about their own survival more than about comradery and playing on the same team. I think it is legit to say, people would be fighting each other deathmatch style at some point. However, in Dayz, there is an abundance of food, medicine and weapons. This is the first stage of the apocalypse - not the last - so to shoot people now and run around like idiots has no other meaning and purpose than shooting somone and running around like an idiot.

    The Death of DayZ

It's weird. I remember playing Killing Floor on UT2004 when it was a mod for many years. It was so buggy at the beginning and I had trouble with the weapons and hitting zombies in that mod. Yet, I would have never chosen to rip off the developers heads and take a crap down their throat. I stayed supportive to the game and today Killing Floor is a stable standalone (which I stopped playing some time ago). It was great being part of that development, even though I could only witness the changes and had no part in them. That game inspired me to think about games and work on mods myself. I cannot see how you can hate Dayz so much for the crap that people do to it. If you want to be safe, get organized. Create a server that needs registration and has an admin banning everyone who cheats, for good. It's not like it is impossible to do. The real problem is that people buy a game for 20$ and then expect to be mouthfed with a spoon. Dayz is about getting it done yourself, not waiting for mail from the gamemaster.
