I drew a picture of how I imagine a layout of the base where the EVRs take place in the vicinity. In my earlier post I described the gameplay there. I know it seems a bit cluttered, but if you read my post you will understand. I'm also adding a picture without all the writing to let you paint in your own ideas :) Please feel free to add suggestions for the base, too. I can expand/update the current layout, based on your suggestions. I didn't add those shelter rooms I mentioned, but I guess these could very well be inside the houses/buildings. http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg217/MaBo123/dayz_NATO_bionuclear_facility_zpsv5uukkyy.jpg

I would not say the cause of infection was the meltdown of an experimental reactor. It just happens that this reactor melted down and the infected seem to be attracted to it. But they are also attracted to light, sound, etc. Whatever the cause of the infection was, it could have developed after the nuclear accident, as an accelerated mutation of a simple virus or of a potential biological weapon that was set free during the accident, too. I just basically want a badass zone with crazy shit going on ;) The explanations should not go deep, just be very visually visceral; leave it to everybody to make up their own story about what happened exactly. This is the stuff for sitting around campfires and telling spooky stories. I would not like Hazmat suits in the game, nor would I like any protection against the radiation, except in the form of maybe Potassium Iodide (pills/solution) to be ingested after the raid to help return you to normal health. Whichever way you do it, this zone should get you almost killed, even if you succeed in everything and fly out with the chopper. It would be delicate to balance, but can be done. It has to be hard as fuck to come out of there alive - and very rewarding. I think the only place where I would allow a hazmat suit, would be near the reactors inner containment. There should be some kind of air lock that needs someone to walk through in Hazmat and another person to activate it and run the control room. Perhaps it is possible to harvest depleted uranium to be used for more effective/deadly machinegun bullets, e.g. for the chopper or base defenses. Why I don't like the suits is, because you will need to hurry up in that area and inside those suits you would get too hot and have limited options to use your gear. Also you would need pressurized air tanks. At least when they are done realistically.

That's true, but Bohemia coders figured out how to make left ctrl do something else than right ctrl. I have faith :)! Blasphemy! There are no other survival games like Dayz! ;) -
Supressing voice-chat outside of Dayz (Skype, Mumble, TS3, etc.)
S3V3N replied to S3V3N's topic in General Discussion
You are missing the point here. In any other game, just "walking the other way" isn't an option. Dayz is not a competitive shooter, it is a survival game with realistic shooting mechanics. I don't see why the mic in dayz can't be tied to the push-to-talk button. I don't think that is really a big deal and it would more or less just require the user to accept certain server settings. Your mic simply won't work, unless it goes through Dayz's push-to-talk button first. -
I always found that the last major area that needs dressing, the NATO base, should pose some unique challenges. I think it should contain an experimental nuclear device/reactor of some kind that oozes radiation and slowly drains your health and lifeforce, but somehow works like candy to the infected. This first idea is to prevent anyone from camping there, but also to impose a time lock on going to the area and escaping alive again. The second idea is that it should be the only place to find a live helicopter, e.g. parked inside one of the old cooling towers. BUT the area needs to be big enough to force the player into a decision: hunt for the helicopter (and some okay loot on the way), or go for the reactor and find some unique parts needed for basebuilding. Of course, bigger groups might decide to split up there and go both ways, so the heli crew could pick up the ones that go looting hardware. There could still be a few more unique places, e.g. for special vehicles over there, e.g. a tank truck, which allows you to refuel the chopper. Adding yet another objective. No matter how large the group, they would have to prioritize one over the other at some point. Another idea is that the area is actually highly dangerous without a map, keycard or dossier that tells you about lock codes and remote disarming of boobie traps and locations of claymores. These could vary from day to day/restart to restart. So, in order to obtain this information you have to kill and search a certain type of zombie first. Ideally, these "information" zombies don't all spawn there, but also at helicopter crash sites or military bases. They should be recognizable, e.g. by wearing a General's Stars (and hat) or similar insignia; they might have a black briefcase chained to their wrist ^^. Players, who find this information could try and contact others over radio or PA (or leave a message pinned to a wall), in order to work together on this problem. You could, of course, just try to wing it with one piece of information and hope your luck holds up - but you would have limited access. Going into the origin zone without proper preparation will very likely get you killed. Likewise, the information sheets should degrade over time (per server restart) or decay when a player is shot at. So anything but a headshot, any damage to gear or equipment which has the information sheet inside it would make it unreadable/badly damaged; this is again to encourage cooperation, at least until the point where conflict becomes unavoidable. IT also means you need to protect your guy who carries the information on the way in. Sure, a protective case will help there, but he's still a VIP. Add to this the occasional ERV storms, which could be announced by pulsating waves of sound and light from the reactor and you have a really fucking scary situation. I guess you can only survive these ERV storms in special led compartments/isolation chambers that are scattered across the area. Once you enter, you would have limited actions available, i.e. can't pull a weapon or shoot inside. This is, so if you enter a room and there is already somebody in it (perhaps 4-6 seats/iso chamber) you would have to talk about what to do with them when the storm subsides. Perhaps some people would be reasonable enough to cooperate. I think this adds some kind of endgame feature to the game, without feeling like a level-up mechanic. Only highly organised and well prepared groups should be able to get a chopper at all. Or to build things at their camp nobody else can. It would also add a huge scare factor to the game, as there are several unique threats apart from massive amounts of zombies in that area. So yeah, I'm all in for those Namalsk like storms, as long as they are tied into a greater (non-intrusive/non-verbal) narrative. Wanna know how shit started falling apart? Go to Nukeland and see for yourself ;) Yes - I am thinking about this game a lot, because I care a lot about it. Imagine awesomeness! It could be really cool.

Supressing voice-chat outside of Dayz (Skype, Mumble, TS3, etc.)
S3V3N replied to S3V3N's topic in General Discussion
I read some of it, quite a lot actually. Thread is over a year old, so it still stands, why this question can't be answered in a satisfactory way. I understand VOIP, it makes total sense in Battlefield and other competitive shooters. It's not an unfair advantage there. However, in Day it is. Example: I met two guys at the airfield, while I was in the hangar. I didn't know it was two at first. When he couldn't shoot me and I hit him with the 9mm, one of them retreated. While I heard him bandaging, I explained that I have nothing on me, except the pistol and we should each just go our own ways. While I was doing that, he told his buddy to sneak around to my other exit and they effectively blocked both exits for me. And dead. If he would have been forced to communicate openly, I would have reacted differently and taken him out while bandaging and would then only have to deal with his friend. But this way, people lie on one channel and make schemes on the other. How often do we hear "friendly, friendly", when they are actually planning on Skype to kill you. It is the total noob encouragement to be able to use 3rd party comms and it strips the game of what most players are looking for: realistic encounters that demand from the player to use common sense and evaluate all information to form a decision that will safe his butt. We can't do that when someone can literally talk double tongued. Of course, people could still have their codes and do the opposite of what they say, but they would surely be making themselves suspicious and would have to be a whole lot smarter than now. At the moment, dumb people are winning the game. Because they are doing what I consider is on the verge of cheating. I hope there will be a mod someday that will allow servers to kick people, who use VOIP outside of the inbuild mechanics. I don't care if it borders on spyware, as long as it removes this flaw. I think some good options in the thread you linked have been discussed, but one was never mentioned. Dayz could disable your microphone when you enter a server and only activate it when you push-to-talk. Of course it would mean a short admin privilege message at the start, but then it would be really fair. Because when you use a walkie-talkie or PA ingame you can also be heard by anyone. It should be the same with VOIP, at least on hardcore servers or those with special settings. I have nothing against some kids playing it their way. They can keep their TS and bandit clans. But I'd prefer to have some servers that are actually populated by people who want to play the game, as I think it was intended. Because we are the people, who played the mod and we are the ones who supported Dayz before it became a game of selective truth and backstabbing players. If it would be impossible to do, I would not care about it or insist on it. But the way I mentioned it, by muting the mic, unless push-to-talk is active, would not cause any harm and seems no biggie. And no, people would not use their phones instead. They can still play their noob hunger games on servers that allow it (as it is now) and leave us grown ups to enjoy our own game. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This recent example is perfect to illustrate my point: none of that could have happened if both groups would have had to talk openly: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/228270-friendly-my-ass/ And this is what Dayz player interaction looks like these days. There is no denying - and I feel confident about saying it - that people who played the mod and Arma before it don't want this type of interaction. Like I said - two types of servers - to each his own = problem solved! -
Supressing voice-chat outside of Dayz (Skype, Mumble, TS3, etc.)
S3V3N replied to S3V3N's topic in General Discussion
That is alright, because it is not going to be happening that often. I mean, one purpose of the walkie-talkies is going to be the ability to have private communications. People in the direct vicinity will still hear those, though. However, on Skype you can go completely silent, giving an advantage to the players using it; an advantage all the ingame speech mechanics are trying to avoid. But as long as we can still use TS3 and the likes, the radios and private channels make a lot less sense. I still think they have some use for getting random people talking to each other, though. Maybe there will be servers that simply recommend using in-game speech only. If people would accept that and nobody tries to take advantage of it (by using Skype with friends anyway), then gameplay on these servers could benefit from it; especially for solo players. It is okay the way it is, but most of the time I feel Skype takes away from the game, more than it offers. Because, for me, it ruins the atmosphere or Dayz when people are constantly talking. It also messes with the sounds quite a bit. -
I used a couple canteens once (in 0.58 exp) to fill the truck. Even though I then filled one with water, I still got food poisoning. It wasn't difficult to get healthy again, but I still found it annoying that I have no way of telling if a canteen is clean or not. Have you also noticed, you can pour contents from the cooking pot into the canteen (currently only water/gasoline). I expect us to be able to fill the canteens with home-cooked stew (or something like that), in order to keep warm and maybe have more nourishment than from a few cans of food. So the idea of smelling something first to identify it would be cool. Could even go that far that you lose the option when you get hypothermia ^^ About carrying human mean with you - don't you see the irony? In order to carry that you'd have to kill and slaughter a human first, the second of which should give you bad, bad karma ;) If you want people to eat that meat you have to be just as bad as the people who kill you.

Ah, so they act like magazines now. Because when you have multiple mags for something you can also just push "r". I think this is a bug though, but a useful one. They don't really have to remove stuff like this!
-
I admit, even though I have a magazine for the Amphibia, I haven't fired a single show yet ^^ The game makes me so paranoid that I always fear someone will hear me. So I only shoot when I get into trouble with other survivors. And so far used only the CR75 and the rifles. I'm gonna try out the Amphibia. Also gonna post some screenshots of all the weapons I collected this patch. I must stop picking up CR75's. I have five already, but this weapons glitch was so extreme and I lost so many weapons at the start (on experimental) that I simply got used to taking everything I can. I started making camp right away, which now amounts to six barrels, 2 civilian tents, one car tent + truck and 6 or 7 backpacks; half of them crafted. I am a terrible hoarder in this game. Yesterday, I found a stash of dropped loot only 50 meters next to my main base where most of my barrels are. I've often seen people just walk past my place so close I could shoot their dick off. So far I was extremely lucky to not have lost anything. And I didn't build everything in the same place, either. But every day, I expect either a server restart and wipe or a camp raid to rid me of my precious gear. I was just really lucky so far, and I do like the barrels. Much easier to hide than tents! Pictures tomorrow, if I can get on the server. I'll also try shooting the Amphibia and check if it is superquiet now, it being a silenced pistol with an extra silencer ^^
-
I've had 2 of those so far. On experimental. All of them worn. I'm going for a friendly look, so maybe people will forget about all the pistols and shit I'm carrying ^^ Not working so far, I still have to shoot everyone where it counts. On the back I have a CR527, scoped with 2 mags. I didn't have any more ammo, until I ran into an SKS guy, who "donated" his fully kitted SKS as well as 60 bullets. Life in Dayz can be so unfair, but he started shooting first. I really like these civilian weapons. More than good enough to defend yourself, and I'm not a bandit. I only shoot when I have to. I mainly wanted to post this, because I find it hilarious that you can attach a crafted suppressor to the Amphibia AND then you can put it into the holster, too! This thing is just unbelievably long now and you can't aim at shit with that bottle blocking the ironsight completely ^^ Strange enough the makeshift silencer is the only attachment that shows up on the starting screen. The CR75 is silenced too, but its attachments don't show.

I find this new shoulder camera is not helping either. It's even harder than before to get a fix on anything in 3rd person. Takes at least a bit to get used to. Even in first person I sometimes find it fiddly, to e.g. check someone's pulse and bandage him. Especially when you shoot them on a hill and they glide down on it unscounsciously evading your every effort to keep them alive. I've always played Arma in Third person and first person mix, so I'm not changing my playstyle. But I wish a few things were more accessible in the menus.

A shame you missed the big Bohemia Sale earlier this year. It had both Arma II and Dayz in it, basically for the price of one game. I would not want to have missed my Arma II-Mod experience and there really is a lot different stuff to do in the mods. Also, in the current Dayz SA build there are no zombies or very few. The mod is much more feature complete and you have cool vehicles and different versions of the mod with focus on different playstyles. I particularly liked Namalsk where you could really feel the cold. There are lots of different maps for the mod(s), so you will have much more to explore there. However, having said that. I played the mods for years and had a great time, but since I have the Standalone I never played the mod again. The standalone drives everyone crazy with its bugs and work-in-progress systems. But if you can have patience, it will come out the better game. If I were you, I'd buy either one of them now and wait for a sale to get the other, if possible. Can't go wrong that way ;)

Heh, this is hilarious! I can really imagine how this guy thought he's really cool and doing all the fancy tuber bullshit, like stripping people and knocking them unconscious to teabag them. And then his "friend" figures what a giant turd this guy is for having no imagination of his own and he tears him a new one. Sometimes it takes a video game to learn the true nature of people ;)

That house seems to have a glitch with collisions. I had the exact same experience with a guy in Khelm - same type of house. He scared the shit out of me, because at first he didn't say where he was and I was expecting to get shot any second. However, turned out I couldn't even see him. I tried dropping a backpack for him and we tried some other stuff, but he couldn't take anything on my side and I didn't see his. I hope this green house is on the bugtracker. Maybe you should report it, since it is now confirmed to be a repeating glitch. I never log off in houses, just to be safe. I had a blast playing today! Can't remember having spent this much time in Dayz since months! On a single day I rescued a stuck truck, hunted deer, fished, and I cooked deer and fish on a stick over the fire . And tried to tan leather, which isn't working for me. And I only lost a Crossbow, 2 combat knifes, a CR75 and god knows what else ^^ (that weapon dropping glitch is killing me; even when I have free inventory space my knife disappeard after sharpening the sticks. I have no idea how and why the CR75 went a little later). The best part was that I'd parked the rescued truck for others to find and nobody took it all day. Then, before I went fishing, I saw it parked in a village I passed through. I tried to talk to whoever was driving it, telling them I'm friendly and that I'd parked it down the road. Couldn't find anyone, so I went fishing. At least 30 minutes later, I return to still find the truck parked there, so I thought: hell, I'm gonna drive a little closer to my base and drop it off again. As I was still in thought, I see a guy stepping on the road and shooting his SKS at me. Bullets ricocheted off the cabin. I swerved to the left and hit him, knocking him out. Unfortunately I also hit a tree and ruined two tires. As I got out to see if he's still alive, his friend in complete paramedic set comes running up to me. I decided to better be on the safe side and took SKS and MP5 off his buddy. And I shout: "Are you armed? I don't wanna shoot you!" Instead of replying he storms at me with his fire axe, so I shot at him, missed and had him chase me. I switched weapons, which made me slow down, giving him his chance to hit me - but he missed. So I turned around with the MP5 and pretty much lit him up with 15 shots that dropped him. All his clothes were ruined, but what do I care? I just took some ammo and went my ways. If these guys had even tried to reply to me, I would have sent them on their way. But this way, I lost a combat knife and CR75, but got a P1, SKS and MP5 - all with plenty of ammo. Thanks god for studid people :)!

Can you use it on someone's balls? This could be a very interesting tool for modding + bambi torture. Reset Character + Force survivor model: female! ;) I know my logic is crude, but hey - just for laughs!

Sorry, somehow I thought the image upload was borked. However, click on the first links and you should see all of the pics.

Ah, by accident, just like I did once ^^ Sorry to hear about your guy's death! I've had a weird mixed bag of things today. I'm a bit miffed about losing crossbow and combat knife, but hey - I FOUND DEER :) First of all - I didn't go looking for deer, I wanted to try out fishing. So I located a nice pond with nothing else around, because I wanted some quality time and possibly start a fire there, too. When I got to the lake, I heard trampling and saw the deer jumping around below me. I startled them . I got out my crossbow and took aim - too low; much too low. I raised my aim, fired and got a one shot kill. But it wasn't the buck. I changed my position, laid down and waited for the buck to come past. I knew to hit high this time and the first bolt killed it. Aparently crossbow is a one-hit-kill, no matter where you hit it. On the way down there, I came past one deer that was stuck on nothing, so I took it out too. After I skinned the buck, I saw another deer stuck near the water, so I axed it and took its pelt. Overjoyed by the 4 pelts, I did not realize at first that my crossbow was gone. Weapon glitch... After I'd skinned the buck, my combat knife was also gone, because when you skin them, your inventory fills up with all the lard and meat, so there is no space for the knife in inventory any more. And crossbow and knife were gone for good. I moved everything around on the ground and they were not stuck below or invisible. My best piece of advice - drop the crossbow/weapon, before skinning an animal! That way, at least you can pick it up again. The same goes for the knife. Search for stones, rightclick on one and make a stone knife. The big disappointment was tanning the leather. Even though I had the barrel and fertilizer for this, it doesn't work. Something is happening and it takes several minutes, but then the barrel is empty. I tried moving things in and out there, to see if maybe the tanned leather would pop up. I restarted and tried with only one leather inside - but the result was the same: not working. aim rly high! stuck deer wait - where is my crossbow? the spoils of hunt back at base: all pelts gone... But hey, at least I found some deer when I was actually only going fishing. It seems logical to me, to search near lakes now. I'm gonna look around some of the other lakes on the map (especially those in forest) to figure out if that is a location the deer spawn at. Can't use the pelts yet, but there is a lot of meat and they look really cool, though they are laggin around quite a bit.

Why are you stitching up the wounds? I usually just bandage. Isn't that enough? Or is stitching the alternative to bandaging? Why would you do that though, bandages can be cut out of nearly every shirt, while sewing kits are far more valuable to fix your own clothes and such; granted, they do spawn quite often now and close to each other, too. But still - why the stitches? I'm curious. I've only ever done that by mistake. Same as drinking Gasoline for me. It's brilliant that the "refuel" and "drink all" tabs are right next to each other when you stand at the truck ^^

Hey! I was driving around and noticed someone had managed to get their truck stuck on a fence. It was repaired and had sparkplugs + battery, so I decided to free it and take it for myself; It's hard to see, but the one I was driving is blue and the one stuck is green; I had to increase gamma to actually see what I was doing. Basically, I turned it around and pushed it off the fence. If you need to do this, go very slow and push from different angles. Eventually, you'll get the truck into some balance on the fence, so you can turn it around and even shove it off the fence from below. This truck is situated on US, East 0-1, south of the village of Shakhovka. It is ready to drive, as I left battery and sparkplugs in. If you claim it, pls post a pic (or message) in the thread, so others don't have to bother going there.
-
Yeah, it's been asked many times. It's ridiculous you need a truck to free another truck, but at least it works. I remember, in Arma II OA when I flipped a quad the only way to get it back up was also to patiently drive it forward + back, until you finally hit something the thing could lift itself up on. It could take 15 minutes of that shit to get going again. Other games simply have a "flip vehicle" option, I actually thought ARMA had it too, but I remember sitting and turning it manually; so I guess, no. Trucks should simply not be able to glitch onto those things, but changing the collision mesh (it is invisible) to be taller would probably also prevent the players from jumping over fences. The only thing I can really think of to solve this is to actually make four wheel drive work on the vehicles. Because if I can get grip at the back, I'd probably be able to pull myself out of a situation like this. It wouldn't be much different from the old quad problems, but at least you could struggle and get yourself out of a ditch then. UPDATE >>The truck has been claimed by someone, so don't go looking for it, unless you want to be in that area anyway. thx!<<

I'm thankful the rain isn't as extreme as yesterday any more. Basically whenever it stopped to rain yesterday, I would run for 30 seconds just to have the next patch of bad weather hit. Today, was much better. Here is how my day went: I was in the forest south of Mogilevka. I went to check Mogi, hoping to find some deer, but of course didn't get lucky. So I took Basher's advice and headed up to Green Mountain, where I found no deer either, but a russian helicrash with Gorka jackets and pants and a tortilla backpack. I stashed my hunting backpack near the crashsite but out of sight, hoping to pick it up later. I felt much relieved to trade my yellow raincoat for a Gorka jacket. It started raining lightly a few minutes later. I went to check the base at Green Mountain, but nothing at all spawned there. So I continued down to the holiday camp and then to Zelenogorsk, where I found a CR75 in the Police station. I was cautiously moving through town, but I seemed to be alone, so I went and checked the officer's barracks. TTKSO's jackets were littering the place, but nothing useful for me there. Just as I was leaving, the trusty "putting-gun-away" bug reminded me that another player was approaching. I circled back out of the area, because frankly, I was carrying too much to get involved over a few cans of beans he might be carrying. To my convenience he'd parked a blue truck only 50 meters below the base and didn't take out sparkplugs or battery. I started it and returned to my base of currently 3 barrels. I took a break at Pogorevka to refuel my truck using one of the waterbottles; I didn't know that I really don't have to refuel the trucks at the moment. However, the short break reminded me of the hunting backpack I'd left bhind, so I went back up to Green Moutain and fetched it. As I returned to my base I saw a truck stuck on some fence, so I took it upon me to free it and left my own truck behind. Then I organised the stuff in my barrel base, parked the truck and went off to write this post. All in all - a good day! Know thy glitches and thou shallst survive! ;)

TIL that DayZ runs much smoother on Windows 10.
S3V3N replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
I still have no clue what you are talking about with the one motherboard deal ^^ But then again, my question was answered, so thanks a lot! I guess I'll try it on my webbook and if it does anything better than Win7, I might consider switching the rest of my systems too. Is it necessary to format your drive or can you do an installation, while keeping old files? I have a lot of stuff I don't really wanna backup, and as far as I remember you can just install the new system without losing personal data. Correct? -
no message received 1-10 mins into server :(
S3V3N replied to littlejames's topic in Troubleshooting
I got that two or three times yesterday and it was always for 11 Seconds. I could still play though and didn't get kicked. I think that that's probably ping related though, as everyone is playing on the "wrong" servers, because they cannot get into one in their own region (on experimental builds). Servers are full to th brim and I guess there is some good data streaming into Dayz HQ now. Plenty of people are playtesting and pushing server stability to its limits. -

S3V3N replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
Really? Only on one motherboard? I was thinking about updating my netbook just to see if Win10 is any good first, before putting it on the gaming rig. But if I do that I cannot upgrade my other machine (for free)? I have not seen them advertising that. It says: get Windows 10 for free - not: on only one machine. Is that confirmed, or did any of you update multiple machines (for free). It seems like Grimey Rick is running multiple copies. Also, I've checked it out a little bit and you might wanna go for custom installation to fiddle with those privacy settings. As Win10 is by default gonna watch your surfing habits and report them back to base. And then you will be sent flower printed toilet paper and stuffed unicorns, because Microsoft decided that's what you want from life ;)
