  1. Love the idea of a peacekeeper faction. Right up my alley. Definitely interested; I sent you a PM, SomeoneMustGetHurt. Also, as an idea, peacekeeper clans should keep two lists, regarding bandits. One for "safe" ones that don't pose a threat, or at least have been encountered without having to be put down, and another for "psychos" that have proven that they're okay with being a bandit, and should be considered "shoot on sight" for members. A bit of external bookkeeping for the players in the clan, sure, but it adds a bit of RP to it, and a clan leader could easily keep the list on Dropbox, and let their members know when they update it. Task forces in law enforcement keep tabs on both current and potential threats, and it seems to work a good portion of the time, so why not in DayZ?

Eh, this will probably get easier once the people that just RDM get bored and go back to CoD, where that's the whole point. Sorry, but in what seems to really be trying to be a survival sim, just randomly killing people is not acceptable, at least not to me. Maybe I'm over-entitled to say that, maybe that makes me a person that should be ridiculed, but I'll stand by that opinion no matter what. If you're going to RP a psychopath, RP them to the fullest. Be inhuman. Act inhuman. There aren't /that/ many people in the world that can be a "successful" serial killer, and act normal until they get a chance to kill, then pull the same act on the next person. If too many people try to be that type of person, it throws things off. Heck, maybe even try RPing as different types of people every time you die. That sounds like it'd be really fun, actually, and makes me think that maybe wiping Humanity on death would be a good idea, or at least providing an option for it. Sure, some will abuse that and pretend they're RPing the same psycho every time, but bleh, people already abuse the spawn syetem, the disconnect system, etc. No doubt individual servers will take harder stances against that type of behavior over time, same as they're starting to take down ragequitters that don't give people a chance to loot them when they start to lose a fight. It'd be neat if there were a way to have a "bio" for your character somewhere, so, if you wanted to be known as a vicious killer, someone people would avoid or try to initiate combat with if they felt lucky, you could, or if you wanted to fool people by pretending to be normal, you could, or if you were a peacekeeper, you'd give the unjust a reason to go after you, and possibly get killed themselves. Guess for now I'll use my forum sig for that. :P

Quite a bit, but I'm too tired at the moment to get into this again. Really don't feel like being dogpiled with insults and "orders" to stop playing the mod.

trance, probably a bad idea, considering a moderator has already said it's against the rules, and that you will be banned if you do it.

Wow, so many insults thrown around in the past few pages. Really making the community look good, you guys. "Stop whining" "Stop playing" "care-bear"(Which I suspect is a language filter in the forum's database, probably for some sort of derogatory term) "Adapt or die" "STFU" You know, more people should see this thread, so they know what kind of people seem to be in a majority in this community. Maybe /that/ would get Rocket to take a harder stance on RDMing and spawncamping. Then again, if he's cursing people out over suggestions, maybe not. This kind of crap is why I don't even load this mod up, haven't since a couple days ago. The influx of new users has created a sub-group of a particularly nasty sort, and the "hardcore" ARMA elitists are jumping on the bandwagon because they want the server slots open for themselves, and they hate newcomers.

First off, he's a modder. He knew full well when he started this project that by putting up a forum, and releasing an alpha, he was inviting criticism, from the internet no less. Second, he doesn't /get/ a cut of the new sales unless BI decide to hire him or something, which probably isn't happening soon. ARMA 2 has a license, and by modding it, hell even by playing it, you're subject to that license. If he started making money off of the mod, which not only uses many of BI's resources, but their engine, without their official consent, he'd be in deep shit. Third, yes, you do respawn. Otherwise, why would my character still have the same name, the same voice, and in a few unlucky cases, show up at the exact spot his predecessor spawned in? Nice try. Look, I didn't intend for this to become a glorified flamewar, as it's shaping up to be. I just, like a few others that have posted here, have a problem with spawncampers. I have no doubt that Rocket will do /something/ about that as development moves on, because ARMA 2 or not, this is a popular mod, and it has to cater to a lot of people. I shouldn't be so harsh on an alpha build, yeah, but it's easy to get agitated when there are so many jerks populating the servers.

Something that puzzles me: Respawning is not relative to anything in real-life. It's not something that's simulated in the mod, because it's an impossible concept in real-life. Why should these bullshit "adapt or die" "rules" be applied to such a concept? Why should, instead of punishing people that spawncamp, new players have to figure out a way to avoid being killed two seconds out? I really hope nobody here speaks for Rocket on this matter, because that's one of the worst decisions a modder could make if they want people to be interested. If some ass goes and shoots me in real-life, I'm pretty dead, and can't jump in group chat and tell the cops who it was, or go seek revenge with a shiny new gun that's magically produced just for me. I can't do much of anything, because I'm /dead/. In real-life you don't get to respawn, so a lot of this argument is thrown out the window, because in DayZ you do in fact respawn, and unless you take a nasty bump to the head each time you're killed, you retain your memories from the life that was just ended. As much as some of you hardcore "ARMA IS A SIMULATION RAWR" folks would love to make new players suffer, Rocket should be able to see, and accept, that there are things in the current spawn/pvp system that need to be addressed, and fixed, if the mod's going to be any fun for anyone that hasn't been stockpiling gear since the start, or doesn't have a good spot in a crane already. As for "why don't you fight back?" you try fighting back when you get shot not a minute after spawning, probably from a crane or other tall structure, likely a good distance away, and all you have on you is a Makarov. That's not skill on the part of the camper; it's a cheap kill of a non-threat.

Not at all; rather, he/she seems to think it would be alright for rape, torture, kidnapping, etc. to be modded in. Freek314, with that attitude, I'm not sure many people would miss you, either.

What Saz said. Random bandits going around killing people is fine; they're bandits, and usually get shot on sight anyway. We're talking about people sitting in the harbor area, shooting people RIGHT AFTER THEY SPAWN. That has nothing to do with people only being nice because society makes them. It has a lot to do with people trying to make the game hard to enjoy for everyone except themselves. Besides that, just because the mod is a zombie survival sim doesn't mean common decency shouldn't be enforced by the administration team. Sure, there are jackasses in every bunch, and the lack of real consequences makes people act horrible, but you know what else happens in real-life? People get kidnapped, tortured, raped, humiliated in public places, and it happens for reasons ranging from gender, race, orientation, and sometimes because a few people in this world are just batshit insane. By the logic of some of the people in favor of camping on the coast, that should totally be allowed in this game too, because it's realistic, and people are horrible in real-life. Make sure to tell BI that in your next email, guys. I'm sure they'll really love DayZ then. Edit: Ohhh, my rep is going to suffer from this thread. Fine by me; I'd rather be unpopular and express my opinion than loved because I don't speak up.

Alright, I'm just not even going to entertain whatever mind-game you're playing, deadbolt. As for "people have fun in different ways," any respectable community will not tolerate spawncamping, under any circumstances. Many FPS servers will permaban people for this, literally every MMO that's still around has some system or other, sometimes more than one, in-place to keep it from happening, and you know why? So jackasses that get their jollies from trolling others like that don't get that satisfaction, and so new players don't just give up and do something else after being camped for the third time in a row.
  12. metal_izanagi

    Official disconnect thread

Agreeing with Griff here. Anyone that actually likes this mod, and enjoys playing it, wouldn't be so chickenshit as to ragequit over dying. The only reason I could see it being okay is if you get spawn-camped, as happens quite often on the coastline. But in that case, if you just spawned, and got killed, it's a lot faster to just roll another character than quit the game, restart, then log back in, so anyone that does that may as well be allowed to, since all they're depriving their killer of is the gear everyone starts with, assuming the person even goes to get it, which is almost never.

    The PvP Discussion Thread

Yeah, see, that doesn't work, to0t. I don't mind if a bandit gets a legit jump on me out wherever, be it the woods, city, or as I clear a building and secure it. What I do mind, and what I can safely speak for a lot of people also minding, is people sitting in a hard-to-reach place right next to a known spawn zone(I've spawned in the coastal area three out of the five or so times I've tried to play the game) and shooting people that might not even know a whole lot about how the game works. Would you prefer to log into an MMO, in a starting zone, and have some level 50 master of stabbing everything run up, cut you down, and log you out, forcing you to log back in just so they can do it again? Didn't think so.
  14. metal_izanagi

    The PvP Discussion Thread

1: That makes two trolls using memes in this thread, when people are trying to have a serious discussion about this subject. 2: deadbolt, you seem to be taking this from a "real-life" perspective, and not a gaming perspective. It's confusing, because you're completely ignoring the legitimate reasoning behind being bothered that there's no downside to just sitting in a crane or on a building sniping people as they spawn, and instead doing what I'm pretty sure amounts to accusing me of having a complex of sorts.
  15. metal_izanagi

    Official disconnect thread

The bedroll idea is perfect, should definitely be implemented. Making a person stick around for two minutes, or even one minute, no matter where they log out, is a bit much, considering in that minute(or worse, two) it would be very possible for a banditard(I like that word, btw. Good one, DeadJohn) to just walk up and shoot you in the face, and next thing you know, you spawn in the middle of nowhere, or worse, on the coastline where there are sniper assholes in the cranes half the time, minus all of your gear. That's a pretty huge jump from "slightly unfair" into "Jesus that's not cool" territory.
  16. metal_izanagi

    The PvP Discussion Thread

That doesn't even address my previous post. It's very damn relevant when you have spawns being camped by griefers, or random killings even when people are helpful, because it puts people off of trying to get into the mod, and makes being "good" and not a mass-murderer a fairly bad choice for survival, something that just doesn't happen in reality. It has a lot of effect on me, btw. It's no fun to spawn, get shot in the head, go through the loading process again, spawn again, get shot AGAIN, rinse, repeat. It might be fun for the little bastard sitting in a crane sniping people, but it's not even remotely fun for the people he keeps griefing. The mod should be developed so that /everyone/ can have fun, and not just a select few that manage to get their hands on decent gear and kill everything in sight. It'd be different if it were an MMO, and the people that kill indiscriminately were actually getting something, like experience points. All they're getting is a giggle and the knowledge that other players aren't enjoying the game.
  17. metal_izanagi

    The PvP Discussion Thread

When the intention is nothing more than "because I could" or "it pisses them off" it's called griefing, and most /decent/ communities frown upon that shit, because it makes the mod look petty, it makes the playerbase look bad, and it makes the developer look really bad for allowing it to continue.
  18. metal_izanagi

    The PvP Discussion Thread

I'd like to know this as well. It's put me off of the game for now. PvP is fine, but it's not PvP when you're just killing to kill, and not even trying to get anything out of it. There's no experience system, you don't get a medal for killing people that are pretty much harmless to you, and it makes you look like a dick, not just in-game, but out of the game as well. As I said in another thread, if the only reason you're playing the game is to get some cheap kicks from killing people that have no chance, you should first off be banned from every server, and secondly, your name should be put on a wall of shame pointing out to everyone the kind of people, and the kind of behavior behavior, that make/makes the mod look bad. Also, this isn't really a PvP thread, so it shouldn't be deleted.

    Should we scrap bandit models?

Okay, that quoted post wasn't even by me. It was by Rinner23. Back on-topic, allowing players to tag others as a feature of the mod would encourage, as I suggested somewhere else, I forget exactly where, mob rule/popularity votes. Does this /really/ need to be a mod where goons can just troll all over the place as part of the damn system? Then you'd have people being harassed by constantly being tagged with stupid crap, or outright lies. Pretty sure BI doesn't want that kind of PR with a mod they're actually interested in working with. As for the "bigots" thing, I didn't mean that there are bigots in the mod. It was a reference to how lawlessness always has a foil, no matter how grimdark you want the setting to be. Don't jump on a soapbox without reading a bit first, man. You've been getting /really/ defensive about this. Chill, we're here to have fun, not I dunno, mock people that are insecure about humans to begin with, and hate the idea of a zombie mod where the zombies are an afterthought to the humans. If I wanted to do the whole "everyone is a suspect, you're going to get killed for no reason" thing, and all the stress it comes with, I'd just go to Uganda. The moral system needs to be there in some form, for sure, because otherwise it's safer to only refrain from shooting your friends, and kill everyone else. With all of this realism talk, turning the game into Lord of The Flies with zombies like that is kind of dumbing it down a bit. Adding peacekeepers would /greatly/ expand things, with positive humanity gained from killing bandits. It would also prevent people from accidentally being labelled bandits just for taking out a guy who killed another player out of nowhere. That would be three factions right away. Bandits, Peacekeepers, and the Survivors caught in the middle of what would likely be daily skirmishes between the two fightey groups. Would also mean that you could stay in a "grey area" by balancing bandit/survivor and peacekeeper kills, meaning if you were really that hellbent on not wanting anyone to know if you're trustworthy or not, you would have to work for it. Humanity should gradually rise over time, and be increased by doing things like leaving supplies in stashes, bandaging the injured, and so on. Sure, people would farm that stuff to keep in the "grey area" of Survivor, but that's going to happen regardless, and at least the decent folks that play the game to play, and not to step on everyone else, would have real options. Bottom line, if you're not playing to have fun, but to get your kicks from frustrating and upsetting other players, you shouldn't be welcomed in the community, and moreso, BI shouldn't want you as part of the playerbase. Just because it's a game doesn't mean it's okay to be an asshat about it. Some of the stuff that happens in EVE Online is exactly why it's always going to be a niche game. A majority of people tend to not be interested in dealing with backstabbing assholes in a game, when they probably have to do that in real-life already.

boneranger, that sounds like it'd be pretty interesting. Kind of dumb to not be able to even see a person's name, though. It's not even remotely realistic, considering there's group chat, oh right, and you're playing a video game.
  21. metal_izanagi

    The PvP Discussion Thread

I do agree with the way the zombie count has been increased. It makes /any/ shooting a last resort, which is a lot more realistic than the previous Dead Island-style "three zombies show up, shoot them, keep going" thing. If BI really works with Rocket on this, possibly with some engine improvements for even more zombies, it'd be great to have shambling hordes and small packs of the current Dawn Of The Dead(2004) sprinters.(And the odd jockey-type frog-hopping dude now and then. Definitely saw one of those when I first started.) Didn't mean to get so hot-headed before; not enough sleep lately, waking up at odd hours, etc. Sorry 'bout that, and thanks for not being too hard on me over it. :) Edit: Direct chat as in private messages? That sounds like a recipe for harassment and whining, imo. It's bad enough when you have people advertising their locations constantly in group chat; I don't need people bugging me one-on-one about how I should totally trust them even though they're a bandit. Wouldn't do it myself, but it also opens the avenue for people to relentlessly whine if someone kills them after they've done well for themselves, gotten a rifle or something, etc. /That/ would piss anyone off to no end, without a doubt, to have someone crying at them privately like that. If you want private chats with your clan/friends, use Skype or something.

Any way you handle the current system, it's not good for a large number of people. Either a more complex system, or less incentive for bandits to go around murdering everyone with no regard, would be an acceptable change.
