Hackers, and the state of the standalone game?
Gadget (DayZ) replied to KetchupOnTheDog's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My understanding is that because its not standalone it allows arma2 scripting - this is what the 'hackers' use. Once its standalone they can remove scripting support or add additional controls to stop its abuse in dayz. The current client server model is designed to be open, rather than aimed at a mmo type client server model where the server has ultimate control and will not allow clients to manipulate the game world. Standalone is great news! -
More hackers encouraged to hack
Gadget (DayZ) replied to SiGouin's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
LOL, I feel for you. The best thing to do is downgrade @DayZ to 1.7.2.3 files and spawn on a 1.7.2.3 server, then respawn as the button should be back I think. -
Finding heavily armed dead bodies?

Most likely a server 'nuke' where everyone on the server died at some point prior to you just logging on. -
Dayz Current State is Game Over
Gadget (DayZ) replied to Gumpnstein's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I see where you are coming from! You need to remind yourself (as I keep reminding myself) that this is an alpha!! Like minecraft, rocket is listening to people and gradually fixing and implementing things that will constantly shift the game around. In my mind, if you are bored, take a break, post a tonne of suggestions to improve and add to the game and see how it evolves over time. Ultimately the way to properly play this is going to be to wipe the hive and reset servers at point if Release Candidate, or possibly Beta. At that point hopefully most bugs will be gone and it may well play differently than it does now. Possibly more challenging with more to do and less hackers, with incentives to not kill every player on site. -
So you want DayZ, but it's $30.
Gadget (DayZ) replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Or you could stop being a thieving scumbag and buy it all on steam, or search online for cheap retail packs. Just remember Dayz wouldnt exist as it is, had people not paid (you know that money stuff that we all have to earn before we can spend...)... -
Agreed would ne nice to know status. You can always downgrade to 1.7.2.3 in the meantime like ive done. Its an alpha at the end of the day.

RE: Private Hives and 'The Rules' - (Update from Rocket inside)
Gadget (DayZ) replied to Anton17's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ive been playing on my own private server following a few deaths by hackers. Ive played solo (which is still challenging but not as fun as with other players, the way its meant to be played). I personnally think theres room for both - I still hop onto official servers and play my 'other' character. This kills two birds with one stone - there are many players wanting multiple chars, now they can. It stops server hopping, stops alt f4, and removes a massive dependancy on the central hive server. -
WTF I thought this was a survival game?
Gadget (DayZ) replied to kragz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I know what you mean! Initially the game attracts people who want to just survive, explore, trying get vehicles working with friends etc. Ultimately the players in the game are your biggest concern. Basically trust no one, kill on site. I used to want to help people but after 20 or so hostile encounters Ive joined the rest and kill on site, which is a good thing or I would have died several times now instead of managing to survive against the odds. The best thing to do is loot smaller villages, try and stay out of the main towns and airfields, play on servers with < 10 people, check all directions and try and avoid players. If you see a player and they've not spottted you, either avoid them or kill them - if you avoid them and fire at zombies 5 minutes later its likely that player you let go will kill you when you arent looking. Trust no one, appart from friends you met prior to DayZ. Oh, and welcome to the mindless abuse you will get on these forums ;) There's plenty of trolls here just waiting to reply to new posts - don't let them bother you. -
This game will fail long term if the PK problem isnt addressed
Gadget (DayZ) posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I won't be replying to this thread, it's my final post - ive only been here a few weeks and it was fun but wanted to leave my parting views I will keep an eye on DayZ patches and hope that it's worth trying again at some point in future. This is bound to attract all the usual trolling and fan boy posts etc, I couldnt care less, I just want to get an opinion across. The game itself is great, its an amazing concept. The problem is the players themselves have ruined this in the short time Ive played. Nearly every player ive come across is hostile and thats not why some people want to play it. Moving forward this game needs to allow 'private' server play minus hive support, OR allow none PK servers, OR reduce weapon damage a lot. The fainting mechanic is also a pain the @@@ if you've been shot once and cannot recover because theres simply no time to recover - you end up F4'ing and if your blood is low from the hit you likely wont recover - it may as well be a one shot kill game. This will get flamed because I know so many people just play to kill players, and they love it! There in lies the problem, if players like killing players, great, leave them to each other on a server. But when some players like to play solo or in groups, just focussed on zombies, surviving, and the environment, they should be able to do so without being annoyed by other players. The concept of anything goes is quite interesting initially but soon becomes an annoyance, certainly for the people ive spoken to outside of the game. They want to do 'co op' survival elements of this game but after spending dozens of hours surviving and getting resource and weapons etc, to be shot in the back by someone camping an area, knowing you've effectively got to start the whole thing again is fine a few times but then it becomes frustrating because all you are doing is recollecting the same stuff everytime and as a result you then shoot anyone on contact - which is where we are now. If I logged into a public server now, I would be a PK'r as well, because I feel like every person out there is just greedy and wants to kill to avoid having to collect their own loot. Three times now ive got kitted up to the max and played the game 'my way', avoiding all player contact because they are all out to kill players instead of survive against zombies. I realise thats what people seem to like, good luck to them, but I want to avoid playing against them. PvP has always been one of those options in games, you either PvE or PvP but you should always have an option to play on a server where you dont get grief players and people that are simply out to destroy your game. Whilst I was away from players the game was awesome and would have been fun with my friends that ive been trying to convince to get the game, but after my experience and knowing what my friends are like they will get just as ******** off as I have being PK'd every 2 minutes. I am now trying to work out how to run a local server to play away from the hive, it looks like a pain in the **** to setup as it uses mysql etc, surely there must be a proper official way that lan / internet none hive could be supported in future? Anyway, enjoy the game, I look forward to its future but wont be playing on any public servers any more. If this does get read by one of the dev team, please consider what people like myself have said - give us a way to play without the interferance of player killers.- 248 replies

This game will fail long term if the PK problem isnt addressed

Another thought Ive just had - for comment / flame - delete as appropriate. How about if the murder count remained even after death on a fresh spawn, and you could reduce the murder count by 1 for every 2 or 3 players you bandaged or morphined etc, maybe only classing someone as a bandit when theyve killed 10 or more people. Then we would have a clear view when playing as to who's probably an arse and who isn't - yes I know it would change the balance completely but maybe just maybe it would make it slightly more forgiving for players who want to play the 'good' role. Its not ideal but it would at least force a balance shift - if the variables were tweaked just right it could mean that say 20 or 30% of people keep repeatedly player killing, with a chunk of neutral players that kill a bit and heal a bit, with say 20 or 30% of players that help people and know who the clear enemies are. EDIT: Possibly even reduce murder count over time - now there's an idea that may (along with the above) shift the balance in a controlable way. We always WANT player killers, I agree it just wouldnt be the same game without them, but its all about risk - at the moment there no risk to playing like an arse. -

I dont know where you got COD from but you are mistaken. COD is one of the worst (yet most financial successful) games ever to be released. I would rather watch paint dry than play COD, so please troll better next time and pick something else, maybe BF3? -

I couldnt agree more. My eyes have been opened from the replies (from both sides) of this thread. One thing has become crystal clear - I keep forgetting its an alpha and the constant player killing might change as there becomes more to do. Secondly, it probably wont change - look at some of the aggressive, rude, sarcastic, clear anti social people that have posted replies to what I felt was a fair view of the game. It appears that the majority are hostile irl - this leads me to my final thought. Its easy to assume (and people keep saying similar things on here) that you would have to shoot on site irl if there was a zombie apoc, because of lessons learnt in the media and games like this prove it. I am not so sure... The difference between being able to hit respawn button and the fact that theres no real risk of just going around on a PK rampage means theres absolutely no risk to being a player killer, irl you might miss, your weapon may jam or the bullet could be dud, you may even draw attention from several other nearby survivors or zombies - attention that even the baddest of bad asses would not want to put on themselves in a real world scenario. No doubt people will start flaming about it being a game now, yet those same people have previously said it wasnt a game but an anti-game, that will make some fun reading ;) -

Sorry if I misunderstood, the whole idea of 'safe areas' and 'banks' just seemed a little too sarcastic to me. I've got no problem with the PvP side except that its unforgiving. ie. no matter how good you are at the game you will die to someone spawning behind you, someone camping etc etc. That's the biggest part of my gripe. I've accepted what a few of the smarter people have pointed out on here - that it is more of a social experiment. I agree its a social experiment that has shown that high percentage of the player base would rather kill on site than work cooperatively. My suggestions here to improve the game are to lower weapon damage, or allow people to run a server that is NOT connected to the hive. -

I see what you are saying, similar to that post I praised a page back. I guess I have to adjust how I play the game, and either just not give a crap about dying, or follow suit and make other peoples lives hell. Seems a shame as I had hoped that it would be a balance of good vs bad players - seems to be just bad players lol. -

Why are there so many abusive players on here? This is quite possibly one of the worst forums ive ever had the misfortune to post on. If you dont post 'fan boy' statements you get stomped on by an average of 20 different forum trolls per hour. It's possible I was killed by a hacker, I honestly dont know, what I do know is that I can play the game very well thankyou, my previous life I had survived for a whole week, spending 5 to 7 hours per day and that included returning fire to 3 other players that attacked me first and evading dozens of other players. But when you get shot from something you dont see all in the space of 1.5 seconds of popping your head around a corner, it becomes more than a little frustrating. I really wish people would read posts properly before trolling - learn to troll properly please, or just dont bother. -

LOL, that's the best reply to any post ive seen on these forums. I take my hat off to you. If I am honest, I can't just shoot people in the back, because I couldnt do to others what they they've done to me. This is my dilema - have they created a game that only PK'ers feel comfortable playing? People who try to excersise morals in this game fail ultimately... -
Why are people getting satisfied over killing people with nothing on them ?
Gadget (DayZ) replied to MrTamarian's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I totally agree. Apparently it's deathmatch over 240km square, with zombies. I think players should start spawning with a pistol again, and zombies should be 'beefed up' big time to deal with weapons noise. eg. A player fires at you, all zombies in a large radius run at him faster than normal and hit 10 - 20% harder. If that was implemented people would think twice about taking that first shot to try and 'loot' a player. -

I said I wouldnt post, but to be honest its hard not to after reading some of the replies. Comments from some about carebears and sims etc - you made me chuckle at least, thanks =) People as always miss the point. PvP in this game is far from fair! Your comment for example, no PvP means no challenge which = boring, yes, I agree! What I dont agree with about this game is playing for 30 hours, surviving many different problems (players and zombies), and then in a tent somewhere (I dont even know where I was), I pop head out, look left - nothing there, look right, nothing there, bam. instantly dropped from 12,000 blood to 3,000 blood and unconcious - how is that fair after 30 hours of gameplay when ive played like a paranoid person, checking in every direction even when moving a between bushes in the middle of nowhere? Which leads me to my point, this game is ALL about PvP, the zombies may as well be removed. I like many were attracted to the idea of an mmo style zombie survival game, what I didnt realise is that it had deteriorated (due to human nature?) into a death match over 240 square km map - counter strike is better imo, at least I know I will spawn with weapons and not have to spent 10+ hours collecting them each spawn - boy counter strike would be popular like that =) I am going back on what I said - just to annoy a few of the people that think they are so good at this game. I will basically start doing what everyone else does and kill anyone I can find on site - had I done that previously I would have notched up a good 10 or so kills of people I previously let walk past me, but now my tactics will be to shoot them from behind, because thats apparently what this game is all about. The devs may as well shrink the map down to 100m square and call it death match with a few zombies! That would sure save people having to explore for 10, 20 or more hours to get kit and then just loose it all to an unseen enemy. Don't get me wrong, I think the PvP element is part of what makes this game, or is it a simulator? The way the player killing is going its forcing people like me to play it in a non sociable way - ie. to just go on a constant PK spree! Why explore the whole map for kit etc when you can just run to the nearest town, camp in a doorway, blow the head of the first person that walks past? If we all did that no one would have any kit to collect off the dead bodies to start with? Anyway, I will go against how I normally play these kinds of games - ie, sociable, helping people, healing people, etc etc (my carebear side I guess ;) ), and destroy other peoples games like they've done to mine. I knew I would die to a player at some point, and I could have lived with it if I had any chance of fighting, or trying to flee but that doesnt seem to be the case with this game. One minute you are there - bang, now your not, start again, learn to play differently, get trolled on the forum for making logical suggestions, then join the trolls in the player killing. Incidentally, I keep hearing a lot of trolling with comments like 'you are one of a minority'. That may well be the case but ive got 4 people in my steam list thinking about playing this game, ive known them all for many years, many offline. They may get the game but I absolutely guarantee they will be in the same boat as me. The people I play with like coop experiences with optional PvP. It's clearly a zombie survival game that has turned into a player survival game. Oh and one more thing, officially supporting a LAN mode or none hive internet mode is totally possible and very easy to implement (as per a few other comments on here). Its up to the developers ultimately. I would hope they can see beyond the death match that it is and provide one of those modes at some point in future. You dont get attached to the kit you collect, you get attached to the invested 10, 20, 30 or more hours of gameplay, to be ended instantly without any opportunity of a defense. If you play in a group I guess this becomes a lot easier, I guess I wouldnt be so annoyed if I was in a group because it makes it hard for 1 person to take on a team, which reduces player killing imo. But if we follow the logic of what people are saying in here, that would be the wrong way to play - coop I mean. What you guys are saying is that I should get a team of 10 or more and just raid servers killing anyone on site - because thats the game. -
Thank god for that lol - I just read this post a hour or two back and read about the 'Restart' button in the pause menu... At the time I didnt think anything of it. 20 minutes later I logged in (after surviving for a week and collecting almost everything I needed to survive, and surving 3 hostile player attacks), and then hit 'Restart' by accident.... Doh, I was pretty *$$£$£!" at myself.... I respawned after considering not bothering any more until it passes beta, and ran for 10 minutes to the nearest town I could see and bang in the middle of the road - 2 dead bodies, both FULLY kitted up with every single item - GPS, Map, Compass, Knife, Hatchet, NVG, Range Finder, Toolkit, Matches - everything I had lost except I had now gained NVG. A tonne of ammo and 1 of everything else you can possible need - blood pack, morphine, anti biotics etc. i was extremely lucky...

LOL, there's a bunch of ignorant people on here. If its too long to read don't reply - do us all a favour and save us having to waste our time reading crappy pointless replies. I take my hat off to the OP. I've done similar things in other kinds of games and I agree it totally spoils it - not just for everyone else but for you. I've had god mode in a couple of MMOs and kitted myself out for a while and you soon realise there's nothing to do and the items you spawned are worth nothing because you never earnt them. That said, what you should do moving forward is report any exploits you come across to Rocket =) I would hope that this game gets to the point where its not worth the effort for people to use scripts and hacks etc as theres not much you could exploit with them. Perma bans are all fine and well but that doesnt stop the problem. Typically the kind of people that want to disrupt the game use trojans to steal steam accounts and then use innocent peoples accounts to carry out the work. Plus, once a career hacker is banned - that's fuel to the fire for most of the hackers ive come across... -
2 Dead Survivor Bodies - North East Supermarket
Gadget (DayZ) posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hi, I am about to post my survivor story, but before that I wanted to post here to see if I could find the two players that someone killed in the North East Supermarket, the one South West of the North East Airfield. I have survived for around 5 or 6 days now and my own story has been quite amazing so far - as I am sure everyone elses are in that personal way that seems to come from this game. I had found the North East Supermarket earlier this morning, just as I was at deaths door. I was severely injured, shaking, blurred vision, starving and on the verge of fainting with less than 3000 blood left and dropping due to starvation (despite what ive read about it stopping dropping at 4000 or something?!?! - and I wasnt bleeding, it was continued to drop 10 per second and nothing would stop it). I could not believe my luck when I spotted the supermarket, it was the light at the end of a very long tunnel, I had been looking for food for hours. Since the area was quite litterally dead and I had seen or heard from no other survivors in that area, I camped at the Supermarket and ate until I was fully recovered. I used that Supermarket as my 'base of operations' all afternoon. I explorered the nearby towns and villages, raided crashed choppers, and the airport before returning to that location and logging off as it was what I considered 'a safe area'. How wrong was I.... I logged on around 16:30 GMT (approx) and as I spawned there was a dead player in front of me. My heart was pounding, this dead player - was he definitely dead? The flies confirmed the fact. I extremely cautiously peeked around the corners to find to my horror another dead player in the doorway between the main part and the back of shop. I checked their kit to see if there was anything I needed but other than a milatary torch there was nothing I didnt already have. Both of these players were pretty well kitted out, maps, both torches, gps, rare weapons etc. I wish i could have helped them before they died, I wish I could find out exactly what happened. I can only assume they were killed by a bandit as they were both facing in the same general direction - ie. away from the front part of the shop, suggesting they were facing an enemy at the back of the shop, perhaps another bandit came in the front whilst the one at the rear acted as a distraction. What i've learnt from this is never log out in any area that is likely to be of interest to others, you dont know what you may find when you login. Secondly, if you hear gun fire from one direction and there are two of you - cover your back as it could be a distraction, or another seperate bandit could take advantage of the distraction. If the two players who died in there happen to read this I would love to know what happened exactly - I felt so gutted for you both, I could see that these players had done a fair bit of exploring to have gathered the kit they had and they died in the building that saved my life hours earlier. -

Good idea but they were both facing the same general direction, and they both were kitted up to the teeth - ie. tonnes of food, bandages, morphine, bloodbags, both had every accessory except NVG, both had Alice packs or better, both had very rare snipper rifles and assault rifles. On reflection I wonder if that server had just been 'nuked' by one of these scripts ive just read about?!? Sounds the most logical as both players appeared untouched - ie. their bags looked to be full to the brim with nothing missing. I took one Bizon SD magazine (he didnt have Bizon he just had the 1 mag, but I already had a Bizon) and the better torch off one body and left everything else as was.
