Yes! I finally fixed it! What I found interesting was that when I allowed the Arma2oa.exe (beta) to launch, even after getting the error, I was able to load up the game. When looking in player profiles, I had somehow different players for each folder that was located in my root My Documents. This was strange. Also, deleting a character from that menu would also delete the corresponding folder in My Documents. For example, Adobe Photoshop was a player because it was a folder in My Documents. Strange, no? I tried deleting a couple of folders but nothing really happened and didn't know where the coding was that set that folder as the default Arma2 profile directory. I did create a new character and set that as default but the same error would still pop up when trying to launch the beta, There's a shortcut in the main Operation Arrowhead folder that is 'Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch' which used to get the same error as when trying to straight launch it. For some reason, adding this parameter to the target line of that shortcut fixed it: -mod=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion Then I added this line to the Steam shortcut target: "E:\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe" "-mod=E:\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2;EXPANSION;ca;@dayz" "-mod=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion" -winxp -cpuCount=4 -exthreads=7 -nosplash Hey presto! I can now run the Beta through a Steam shortcut, complete with overlay once again!
  2. Aside from the obvious downfalls, I think these types of discussions and suggestions are exactly what the forums are intended for. We have two parties thinking coherently and presenting their opinions and facts about one objective and how it stems out into other areas. I'm pretty sure that posts like these are what are helpful in the development of the mod. If Rocket was at a stage where he was thinking if each server have its own individual database (to combat a lot of the issues the community has) then where else would he need to look, other than the responses to this thread? That is, however, a tangent off from what I started the topic for. Although I have confirmation about the rules from several players here, a specific reply from staff that isn't copying and pasting rules would be most appreciated.

Unfortunately I'm not in the right position to re-download the game (bandwidth). What files did you move?
  4. To be honest, the entire reason I even stumbled onto private hives was just this. I play on New Zealand servers, that got absolutely plagued with hackers especially in the evenings. The group I played with had all 3 of their bases on one server simultaneously raided by hackers, with most of them getting killed/trying fruitlessly to get back to their camps to repeat the cycle. Then came the instant server-wide killings and that was me done, I wasn't playing NZ servers after that. I tried Australian servers, and by chance a couple of them were private hives without being advertised as such. I figured it'd be a good way to gain experience without the threat of instant death from illegitimate means. I'm fine with being outgunned by a better player, or a lucky one, but not a hacker... fuck that. Everything else with private hives came after that, but yeah, that was the sole reason I even accidentally found out about them, let alone played on them. I've seen better players on private hives that don't need hacks and have learned from every death.

Gonna keep bumping this in hopes of a solution Hope the Mods are okay with this.
  6. As interesting as I find this discussion from both parties involved, I did simply ask a question regarding the rules and these servers, not the moral ethics of playing on them.
  7. It seems like in your preaching ignorance that you've actually adopted ignorance. The game is exactly the same in a private hive as is in the public hive, apart from better performance and people sticking around longer. Knowing a couple of people on a server will never change the thrill, danger and effect that running into or seeing another player has in DayZ. You still die, you still lose all your stuff. You still team up with people, you still get killed by bandits and bugs. Generally? Less hackers, DCers, server hoppers and kids and/or people with no interest in the game's longevity that, as stated earlier in the thread, do not give a fuck who you are or what you're doing and will hop from server to server adopting that notion. That's not dangerous, its borderline idiotic and fucking annoying. All the overheads are exactly the same, you just don't have to put up with the general consesus of wide-spread public bullshit as is always in a large body of people. In a private hive I get killed just as much as I do in any public hive. The difference? I can get offered to turn around, to give up my gun, to join them, to be chased, to be betrayed.... what's that? Yes, every option that is and should be available in DayZ. Not just some pointless shoot-em-up in two towns. Yes, its a part of a game, but not the core element. In my own experience, private hives tend to have a ping-limit for IQ - if your IQ is in double-digits, chances are you're not in a private hive. That is experienced opinion.
  8. Had never considered this. Very valid point. Will take this into consideration.
  9. I think you missed the point. I understand what you mean about the game needing to be hard and challenging, but there's a limit to this. I can fairly say that the new player-base probably has no experience with Arma2 or its engine before and it takes a hell of a lot of fucking around before you have even a clue of what you're doing. Playing standard Arma for experience just ain't the same after DayZ. The point isn't about difficulty, even though that might be the reason that one joins a private server. What Nalestom said wasn't about joining, it was about staying. There is nothing tying you to the hive servers when everyone wants to kill each other, your character can be transferred and vehicles/loot are all taken, that's why we have the server hopping Alt F4'ers around, because there is no reason to stay on one server. If your character is locked onto one server, you get just as much difficulty, I can assure you... and after you're there for a while, you stand to lose just as much as ever. The key thing here, is that when your character dies, you don't lose the people on the server and the community built there, since you can't just disconnect and choose another deathmatch.

    Hasn't anyone else encountered this?
  11. Totally agree. Its because you're forced to use just that one server if you want to use that gear. In turn, you have to use just that one server and meet all the neighbors that have to use it too. Then you sort of realise its not because you have to use that server for your character's gear, but because you want to use that server, full-stop.

    Zombies way too hard now

Have to say these are very good points that I've thought about for a while. 1) I understand the random effect that zombie damage can have given your blood, but in my experience, it literally is if you're under 8000 blood and get zombie punched, you're unconscious and get eaten alive. Seems ridiculous? I've killed two players only to have a zombie come at me from the sound of gun fire, hit me once, and I'm on the floor to die right by my dead victim. It seems too stupid to be true. Having to kill another player using wit, skill, experience, force, luck... only to have a zombie effectively 1HKO you on a 'random' roll right next to your dead opponent. I wouldn't be saying this if it only happened once but its happened several times. If you're under 8 or 9 thousand blood, stay the fuck away from anything. 2) Hatchet aiming in general seems bugged but since they're supposed to be the 'silent killer' for zombies it is quite annoying to have it work so inconsistently, especially if you were new to the game. If having a hatchet as a weapon is supposed to be a real solution for zombie killing, it needs to be: a] Able to be equipped without having to fuck around, dropping your gun and reloading it and whatnot when you're trying to be tactical and stealthy with a silent weapon - it really makes it a laughable irony, and b] The hatchet aiming/zombie hit box needs to be worked on. 3) Got to say, initial Zombie spawns seems pretty fair throughout the game, even in high-loot areas. But the respawn definitely needs considering. Helicopter crash sites, I can understand the respawn rate needing to be high, but not in a bloody abandoned shed or petrol station.

I hate to keep bumping like some annoying forum new-guy, but I've searched google up and down without an answer (relating to the beta version) and my own troubleshooting has been exhausted with nil point.

    Zombies way too hard now

Oh, you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. You see, these particular zombies were in the Heaven's Gate cult and their zombie Jesus was coming to earth on a comet. You just happened to be searching around a barn for beans while they were leaving their earthly vessels.

    Zombies way too hard now

Yeah, I was aware of the OA patch nerfing the lower sidearms and whatnot, but not being able to kill a zombie with a revolver shot to the head? Come on...

    Zombies way too hard now

Oh, one thing I did forget to mention in my last post. I don't know whether its down to zombies being buffed or guns being nerfed but guess what happened today? I headshot a zombie with a revolver and it didn't die. Did you hear that correctly? I headshot a zombie with a revolver and it didn't die. My zombie kills read 3, and headshots read 4. I hadn't killed any other players. I definately hit it in the head, the animation (blood) changes when you give it a headshot. I don't think they're too strong now, but I think that was an interesting thing to point out.

    Zombies way too hard now

Definitely think they needed a buff and they seem alright for as much as they can be alright. The only problem I would have with it is the difficulty curve. I remember as a new player it was hard enough but it'll take even more bullets to drop those zombies now. Its a lot easier for us that know the game but there is more of a steep drop off for new players. I personally think now zombies have gone from a none-existing threat to an average threat. Before, zombies could very occasionally get a lucky hit on me when I'm low on health and knock me out or break a leg, but that was it. I was honestly surprised to see people with 70+ zombie kills when all you had to do was run through a town or forest and they're gone. I never had to kill a single zombie unless they were blocking a stairway or door. Since the latest patch I've met more friendlies than before, tenfold. Maybe its the servers, or maybe people have realised that now the zombies have stepped up a little bit then saftey in numbers is now required a little more than running solo and not bothering to use a gun unless a player shows up. Now ammo does need to be conserved for tricky zombie hordes as well as players. The main reason, however, is now you can't just run around town shooting off your Enfield, because 15 zeds will swarm you and if they don't cause you a problem, they will at least reveal your location. I don't want to sound as though I'm just happy with every change in every update, but I'm pretty happy with 1.7.2.4 so far, minus the graphics glitching. The zombies really needed this boost.

I've tried verifying both caches and started them both more than once, have even moved the profiles out of my documents and started another profile and set it to default on both Arma2 and OA. Still no luck. Strangely, it regenerated two profiles after I moved them out of my documents and started the game. That must mean there's a line of code somewhere and a backup/alternate location for profiles. Assuming that's even the issue. Can anyone help? It only occurs when launching the OA beta. Reinstalled several times already with different beta versions.
  19. Huh, the L85 was removed? Having never had that gun, fanboyism / non-conforming / antagonistic opinions and comments aside... I'm glad they removed it.
