    Hotfix Build 1.7.1.1 Rolling Update

Heat packs. That said, temperature in DayZ doesn't seem to be much of a thing to worry about at the moment; I've never been below 35 degrees.
  2. I had to do something similar after spawning in the ocean. Somehow, I managed to swim to shore with only my ALICE pack on my back, nothing at all in my primary or secondary slots (CZ 550 and Revolver, you will be missed). All I had were two bandages, two cans of food, a bottle of water, and a little bit of medical gear (1 painkiller, 1 morphine injector). I'm only glad that I never ended up aggroing any zombies; if I had, I'd have surely been screwed. Finding a pistol and barely scraping by on one magazine was a challenge indeed, but what makes me say NO to any sort of 'removing starting weapons' is the incident I had when I got to Kamenka. I came across a player with a horde chasing him, who decided to shoot at me rather than the horde. I couldn't shoot back; I was completely helpless, and since I had to run for my life I also ended up attracting a bunch of zombies. If you want to take the hard path and ditch your starting guns and gear, by all means, go ahead! I'd be fine if we were only given two or three magazines for the Makarov instead of 6, but those two or three mags would be enough to prevent a newly spawned player from getting raped by the first bandit he ran into, or getting endlessly chased across the map by a single zombie.

    DayZ Stories

I just ran into the stupidest survivor in the history of survival. I'd managed to get back to Kamenka after spawning at 0,0 in the ocean, somehow with my ALICE pack but without any primary or secondary weapon; I'm completely defenseless. Anyway, Kamenka seems awfully deserted of zeds when I get there. Just as I wonder Why's it so empty?, I see exactly why: a player running through the main street with a pack of about 10 zeds chasing after him. What does he do? He shoots me. With his makarov. I run, since I can't shoot back, while he attracts even more zombies. He follows me. He keeps shooting me. WHY?? Eventually I run into a red house in the middle of Kamenka, which he follows me into; I'm fucked, since I ran into the dead end room, but just as he gets into the room before mine he drops to the ground. The zombies ended up killing him and despawning right before my eyes; this idiot survivor had wasted all his ammo on me instead of the zombies chasing him. After shooting at me with what was probably three mags worth of precious ammo, he had only put me down to 7000 blood. I of course proceeded to tell him all of this, thank him for his idiocy, and then scrape by with his makarov and a single magazine I found for it. Some people...
  4. No. "Maybe adds some authenticity: who has a handgun at home?" Who has a Lee Enfield and two M1911s lying around in a supermarket? Or a Winchester in a church?
  5. That's a load of crap' date=' since pretty much every infantry weapon in ARMA II has an icon for it; this rule only applies to people who are carrying weapons that are normally mounted or immobile, such as a GAU-8. Also, since people don't seem to be able to see it, OP's picture [b']clearly shows what kind of weapon it is. The M40A3 is not a part of the DayZ loot tables, so it is definitely a hacked weapon.
  6. If you look at the weapon name up the top, you can clearly see it's the M40, which is not a registered weapon in DayZ. Therefore, you should get rid of it and let a mod know what happened so you don't end up with a database level ban.
  7. So is the trading post thingo up and running yet? I'm tempted to drop in and do some actual trading.

    MK16 - Legal?

Those are also both legit weapons. So far there are no legitimate M16 rifles with optics other than the ACOG, which is not a red dot style optic.

IF this was an actual game...

Game purchase only' date=' DEFINITELY. Subscriptions are things I hate to keep track of, while play-for-free rapidly turns into pay-to-win. While it's still in alpha or beta, having community input is important, but only so far as bug testing, gameplay, item creation, and gear balancing is concerned. The actual goal should stay firmly rooted in what the creators want. Community servers are good' date=' but being able to lock them and spawn items in them would be bad, and immature admins are always a pain... Go for it, if it means you can spend more time working on DayZ and hire others to help out full time! I don't doubt there'd be many people willing to help fund such a venture. Just my 2 cents, hopefully it helps!
  10. Adding a bunch of sounds in general seems to be a good idea. ARMA II has a fairly nice way of handling sounds, and I know I can't have any music or background noise goign on while I'm playing DayZ, because listening to your environment is just as important as keeping an eye on it. Things like unzipping a backpack or the ripping sound of strapping on a bandage would be nice to have, and doors opening/closing would add to the ability to tell what's going on around you; footsteps are very, very handy for telling if a zed or a person is nearby, especially at night.

DayZ: The Worst Best Zombie Game

Considering that someone decided to snipe your thread with their own overstated and controversial opinion, it's not surprising. I did read through the article, though, and it seems to sum up DayZ pretty well; the mod is definitely more about how people react to other people, than they do to zombies, which was put into words very nicely.
  12. I tend to use the 'hide bodies' function on zombies or player corpses so that people don't know that I'm around, assuming they haven't heard my gunshots. It adds a degree of stealth to the game that I find useful, so I'd be happy for it to stay.

Did crossbows get nerfed in 1.6 patch?

At the moment, crossbows take up too much ammo space, are too inaccurate to use. I mean, come on, it's a hunting crossbow. They're meant to have some sort of sight! The one time I tried using a crossbow, it got me killed in a slow, painful manner; missing too much, scrounging for ammo meant I encountered more zeds... and eventually they just wore me down because the crossbow was so damn useless.
  14. Just a couple of quick questions that I hope can be answered fairly succinctly... We all know tents and vehicles can store supplies, and act as little bases to go back to and dump loot in or store things safely when your backpack fills up. I've so far avoided using them because I don't know how long they last. Does a server crash result in your tent disappearing? Or a server reset, which some servers do every 4-6 hours? Or do tents / vehicles remain present and fully stocked after server resets/crashes? (I know they aren't persistent across servers, though.)
  15. Duckman404

Regarding tents / vehicles and server resets.

Okay, I guess for now I'll use tents to store stuff that isn't super important, like spare food and wood... Thanks for the answers!

Will zombies back off if you keep running?

Ah, but that's not entirely true; if you put trees and rocks and fences between yourself and the zeds, you can buy those few seconds you need to turn around, sight your weapon, and breathe a little to aim properly and pick off a few of them. Of course, if you're out of ammo that's a different story entirely...

    What to do?

Stealth. I've snuck into plenty of towns that are packed full of zombies, looted every building that is enterable, then gotten out without ever firing a shot. When dealing with other players, Stealth x2 is required; not only do you need to look out for your own self, but you have to be constantly looking over your shoulder for other players, and using cues such as footsteps, flares/flashlights/chem lights, gunshots (that aren't your own), or zombie aggro to tell where other players are.
  18. You can fire normal rounds out of silenced weapon in real life' date=' but they aren't anywhere near as quiet as subsonics. [/quote'] Actually, there really is no need for MP5 SD ammunition: the MP5SD has holes drilled in the barrel that reduces the velocity of normally supersonic bullets to subsonic by releasing gas pressure from the barrel. So a normal MP5SD would be able to fire the MP5 ammunition at subsonic velocities, because that's how it's designed. Kinda wish this was taken into account in DayZ, since most of the time I see no reason to grab an MP5 over an M4A1.

Will zombies back off if you keep running?

Putting as many obstacles between yourself and the zeds is your best bet to temporarily get some breathing room from them: weave between trees and rocks if you're in a forest, or draw them into buildings and dash out if you're near civilization. As said previously, smoke grenades work the best, if you can get far enough away to toss one down without being clawed to death, but make sure you go prone once they're drawn to the smoke. The runners, in my experience, do not give up. Ever. Damn zombies ghosts will even phase through walls just to get a swipe at my beans...

    Bandit/Survivor Morphing to be removed

Neither do I, but once the bandit skin is removed it'll give me even less incentive to try and interact with other players. For realism points I'm glad there's going to be no more bandit skin, but in terms of gameplay I suspect there's going to be very little reason to trust anyone besides your IRL friends.

    Build 1.5.8 rolling update

I think what's happening here is that the Winchester 1866 is slowly being turned back into what it should be - a rifle. In real life' date=' the 1866 isn't a shotgun. The only reason I can think it's still using 12 gauge slugs in-game is because no one's bothered to make a model/entity for .44-40, which is what the 1866 [i']should be firing. In any case, no lever-action shotgun could possibly hold 15 rounds; it'd have to be six feet long! I'd welcome more shotguns to the game, such as a double barreled hunting shotgun or maybe a Winchester 1887, which would fire 5 shots rather than 15.

    Build 1.5.8 rolling update

Glad that the Winchester has been fixed, the gun nut in me was crying that a 15 round shotgun that looks like a rifle even exists... Once I get home, I'm sure I'll be finding out how wonderfully broken the temperature system is, then go wood hunting so that I don't lose half my blood :D

Is it like this for everyone?

I can attest to this. One time, a bandit being chased by a horde of zeds ran past me, spotted me by a supermarket, and decided to use me as bait by shooting me with a winchester. I went down, bleeding badly and with broken limbs from a couple of shots, but unluckily for the bandit I was still able to see well enough to empty a couple of revolver rounds into him. He went down and stayed down, while I managed to (barely) hold off the rest, heal, and get away on about 500 blood. Long story short, he who has more blood comes out on top.

Is it like this for everyone?

I think the only safe way to get away with a kill is to sneak up on the target, dump a few rounds into the back of their head, then get behind cover as soon as you can. I've had something similar happen to me, where I unloaded about 5 rounds of 5.56mm into someone's face, only to have them kill me a few seconds later despite being dead.
