Ideas for Hunting/New Equipment for Standalone
serenityrick replied to TIC's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Just to add the OP, perhaps residential houses (and hunting stands of course) have a chance to spawn Deer musk gland tinctures or deer urine. Applying these to yourself can have pros and cons. Pros: Allow you to approach deer more easily. Probably key for hunting with a bow or crossbow. Cons: Zeds aggro range is increased if you go into a city without washing it off To wash it off, simply right click a water source (canteen, water bottle, water well) and select "wash off deer tincture/urine".. or simply wade into a pond. -
The ONLY Realistic Way to Prevent Deathmatching: Make DayZ a Living Hell
serenityrick replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Reading through the OP I was like "Uhhh.. aren't a lot of these suggestions already in the game?" then I noticed it was made almost 2 years ago, haha. -
Since this is supposed to be so realistic
serenityrick replied to Meedle's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Uh.. that's the point of the game. It's a survival simulator with zombies. Take out the need to eat and drink and you have a pretty boring game that is even more deathmatchy than it is already -
Might be a little ambitious but it might be cool if car keys spawned inside houses that were nearby said cars and you would have to get in each nearby car to see which one worked. Then it would play out like you said; the car would start up right away if the driver had a key otherwise it would have to be hotwired every time (perhaps 20+ second animation). Of course, people who are just checking the houses who come across car keys would probably take them willy nilly if not because they are packrats but also because they want to make sure someone else can't have them, haha.

Honestly, and I'm aware I'm probably in the minority on this, but I'd like to see how the event plays out if I'm being robbed or taken hostage. I can't wait until bases, vehicles and the burlap sack are implemented so I can see how something like that is played out. I'm cuffed and hooded and forced into the back of a junker car and can't see where we're headed.. suddenly the car pulls over and I'm forced out and I hear a bunch of flies.. they take my hood off and I see a mass grave of everyone they've killed then it all goes black as I hear a single shot. As morbid as that is, that would be quite the fucking story. And me being unrealistic or lame by charging at a guy who has the drop on me knowing I'm just going to get shot would be..... boring. /shrug

If they can fix the delay of putting something on the ground then I'm fine with not being able to rummage other people's inventory. As it stands, it can take upwards of 20+ seconds for something to appear on the ground which is rather annoying.

The future importance of hunting, cooking, the northlands and rare items (with pics!)

And? The idea is that the buildings in those areas would hardly ever spawn prepared/canned food -
so you kill on sight unarmed players and combat log? That's what I got from the story.

I was doing some testing with putting together a stove and cookpot. This is the exact steps you need to take to put it together: 1. Click and drag the portable stove over a propane tank. This should combine the two. 2. Click and drag the portable stove w/ propane attached into the vicinity. 3. Right click the stove in the vicinity and select "turn on" 4. Once it's on (you'll see the blue flames and sound effect of burning gas going), click and drag the cooking pot over the stove. And there ya go! I didn't have water at the time otherwise I would have tried to test the boiling water and cooking rice aspect although, I'm hearing that's not implemented yet? I'd still like to try :P Also notes: - You CANNOT add the cooking pot to the stove if the stove isn't on first. If you do, it just replaced the stove with the pot. Again, turn the stove on and THEN drag the pot over it. - You CANNOT put the entire crafted stove + cooking pot in your bag. You have to detach the cook pot first.

Some would.. but it would be a lot more inconvenient than it is now for them to do so -

Why are we making it harder to be friendly??
serenityrick replied to Lidskjalf's topic in General Discussion
I'm just going to comment on your first concern about medkits and ammo boxes: The reason why it's not as convenient is because it's more realistic to put the box in your hands in order to see what's inside. It's supposed to be a tradeoff. You get more inventory slots taking up less space in your backpack but it takes an extra step in order to get to those items. I think it's a good mechanic personally. -

If the rarest loot is inland, that's a pretty good incentive to trek that way, don't you think? -
Persistent loot and server resets/stability. Is it possible?
serenityrick posted a topic in General Discussion
I keep reading how servers will have persistent loot. Basically wherever loot dropped it will remain there permanently until someone happens upon it or it degrades fully. Rocket mentioned how he envisioned bases or just areas of the map with just hoardes of gear and food that can and eventually become targets for players to ransack. All that sounds awesome however.. what happens on server restarts? Will all the barracks and military camps and houses that were picked clean simply have all that loot back in them? And if so.. wouldn't that progressively make popular servers have a massive abundance of loot throughout the entire map? And in turn, would that not cause a lot of stress to the server as more and more crates of beans are stored at a bandit or hero camp? Or am I thinking about this all wrong? Or would item/food degradation happen often enough that a lot of items would simply degrade into "ruined" and disappear after a time? Sorry. That was a LOT of questions. -
Is the goal to have 100% of buildings able to be entered?
serenityrick posted a topic in General Discussion
This isn't a criticism or anything. The fact that we can go in almost every single building and house is fantastic. It seems like 95% of buildings are able to be entered which is great. But it begs the question why not push that last ~5%? Again, don't get me wrong. If some buildings are simply static objects, I'm fine with that with the amount of buildings we have now that can be entered. It's just odd that they stopped just short of every single building. Or is it that they just haven't finished editing those buildings yet? -
How butthurt do you get when you die in Dayz? :)

I'm never mad when I die at the NWAF.. I expect to die. I just hope to take some people with me :) -

The increased chance of sickness and diminishing returns on canned food would definitely be a plus and reason to cook, fish and hunt (completely forgot about fishing). That's definitely stepping in the right direction -
So I'm geared up and know how to be careful. What now?
serenityrick replied to pakundo's topic in General Discussion
Explore the new areas Go on a hike to the north and see the incomplete areas See how long you can survive in the NWAF Hide in the bushes near the coast and hunt bandits who are griefing "bambis" -

While I honestly have no idea, my inkling is that those values will be tweaked once the game progresses. I mean.. they have to right? Based solely on the fact that you CAN cook things, something tells me Rocket will change it so there will be a reason to do so.. like prepared food will actually be a lot more rare across the board as it inches closer to a full release. Or perhaps the longer your player is alive, the less canned food does for him/her. You can eat a can of spaghetti to satiate yourself and stop yourself from starving but to truly satisfy your character and not be hungry ever 3-5 minutes, you'll have to cook your food. Agreed. I addressed that as well. My assumption is that the food values for those items will be significantly reduced once both cooking and hunting is introduced. Right now they need high values as that is literally the only source for food right now in the alpha. But again, that's all an assumption. -
Why is the world of dayz so static ?
serenityrick replied to pogosphere's topic in General Discussion
the OP could have been shortened up considerably by simply typing "I have no idea how video game development and game engines work" You're asking this game to have all the physics of half-life, super smooth animations and combat of The Last of Us or modern FPSs AND have a massive overworld keeping track of thousands of zombies and loot spawns and dozens maybe hundreds of players at once? Good luck with that. -
What a ridiculous conclusion to arrive to; "Not only will I not be nice or helpful to anyone in this game ever again, I'll torture any and every person I come across from now on!"
-
Probably not worthy of a new thread but I'm going to post anyway. Earlier today I was exploring some of the new areas with a friend. We were at that new area north of Chernogorsk with the tall apartment buildings and he decided to provide overwatch from a somewhat nearby building with a Mosin and a badly damaged scope (great idea!) while I looted the two super markets in Dubky. After a relatively unsuccessful trip I started to make my way back across the field when all of a sudden I heard a very sharp and VERY LOUD crack of a bullet whizzing by my head. In Mumble I laugh and ask my friend, "Was that you?" (thinking he was just messing with me) Before he could answer all of a sudden there was a BARRAGE of gunfire from the south. Bullets hitting all around me. I'm yelling "Shit! Shit! I'm taking a ton of fire!" (Pic of initial contact. My friend is on the roof to the northern most building) I turn 180 degrees and look for any cover at all. All I see is that patch of trees and I zig zag my way through them.. all the while bullets are whizzing by my head and hitting the ground all around me. I'm yelling "There's at least two of them! Holy shit for the love of God give me cover fire!" And he's like "Dude I can't fucking see them. Where are they!?" While running I hold alt and turn to look behind me and I see one of them crossing the road to try and flank me. "One of them is on the road trying to flank just below you!". At this point my screen is completely washed out and the gunfire stopped after I lose them in the trees. I quickly bandage myself and finish up just as one of them starts firing again. I somehow manage to not get shot despite taking what seems like forever to stand up from a crouching position to retreat back to these apartment buildings: I get into the building and make my way to the 4th floor and look out the window. My friend finally has visual on both of them heading north. It seems as though they gave up the hunt.. but then my friend decides to try and take them out. He misses and they turn around and stay huddled in the bushes just north of my buddy's position. He starts laying down fire to keep them pinned in that location as I make my way to flank: I am now within maybe 20 yards of them hiding behind a tree.. unfortunately these guys were very twitchy DayZ players. They would CONSTANTLY move.. back and forth back and forth. They literally did not stop moving. Felt like I was watching someone play Unreal or something, haha. So I slowly made my way up to a bush within just FEET of them and one of them decides to run out into the field. I have a pretty good view of him so I shoot him about 4 times in the chest and he goes down. HIs friend immediately starts back tracking and looking for me. I look back at the first bandit and he's already getting up. He was just unconscience and apparently only for a moment. I put another couple rounds in him and then I have no choice but to assume/hope he died and start worrying about his friend. We circle some bushes and I say to him "Hey hey hey.. let's not shoot eachother okay? let's just stop." .... no answer ... he round the bush and I try and put the remaining shots of my clip into him but I only had one shot left.. *clickclickclick*... shit... I try and run away and he puts me down.. seconds later he puts the finishing bullet into my head and I die. My friend chronicles the conclusion of the firefight over mumble for me as I begin collecting gear from scratch at Chernogorsk. They make their way into the building and get to the final ladder up to the roof and they start yelling at him to come down.. my friend tells them to come up (lol).. this goes out for about 5 minutes or so and then silence. My friend was like "Shit.. he's probably ghosting to another server.. let me go and put myself in a corner so they don't flank me".. and he turns around to get a good position and he runs right into the guy... who teleported right behind him (via ghosting to another server) and kills him. Such a lame ending to an otherwise great encounter. Long story short... the adrenaline I felt as bullets whizzed by me as I'm being absolutely barraged by gunfire was fucking amazing and the ensuing fight and general encounter was really fun! But overall left a bad taste in our mouths since in the end they ended up "winning" because one of them abused the system rather than just accepting the stalemate. -_-

Absolutely. I'm not pissed at all that they were trying to kill me on sight.. and I'm certainly not an advocate for trying to get that mentality out of the game. The only thing I was irked at was the combat logging/server ghosting shit. The encounter legitimately ended in a total stalemate and that's how it should have ended. Instead the player(s) in question felt the need to abuse the current system to end it on their terms.

And after living through the initial barrage, I completely agree now. I mean they were close enough to hit me once and luckily I wasn't knocked unconscious but still, they had to be pretty far away.. and that should be the risk/reward with firearms in this game. If you want to make sure your bullets count, you should basically have to get closer if you're not using a long rifle. Prior to this, my same friend and I were just testing accuracy nearby while we both sat on separate rooftops north of Cherno. After reading about everyone in this forum complaining about gun accuracy I said "Okay.. one shot. See if you can hit me at that distance. I'll even post another map of our test: He was using the same Mozin with the "Badly Damaged" scope. Granted it wasn't exactly a record setting snipe or anything, but I fully expected the shot to miss. Instead I hear about .001 second of the shot audio and my screen goes black instantly and I see the words "You are dead." That seems totally fine to me. It's a long rifle and I was completely still. If he was using an M4, I would expect most shots to miss or barely graze me and that's how it should be.
