Third person view removal from SA discussion
serenityrick replied to lev's topic in General Discussion
This is actually a valid question. I'm honestly surprised that Dean and the rest of the DayZ team aren't making it 1st person only considering they are making everything else so realistic and authentic (or trying anyway).. My only thought is that they feel as though they'd lose sales if it was 1st person only. I hope FPS servers are plentiful and popular as time goes on. It's even more stressful than usual covering a buddy who's eating knowing that someone could literally be standing behind a wall looking at both of us knowing the exact time when to step out and fire... and that kind of stress is not good. The stress you get from first person only as you're clearing out a building knowing the other player also has to play in 1st person is the good kind. -

Game as support / medic / hero... It's quite sad
serenityrick replied to TimM1983's topic in General Discussion
Individualism does not mean selfish.. Collectivism is more harmful to the individual because if shunning you from a group (or flat out killing you) is better for the collective, an authoritarian rule will have no problem doing that. You can be charitable and practice/prefer individualism. But individuals don't like being FORCED to do anything for the collective nor should they be (my personal opinion) -
Game as support / medic / hero... It's quite sad

Just keep an eye on them. In order for them to hit you, they have to raise their fists. as SOON as you see them do that, put them down. -
Will melee be improved to be more realistic?
serenityrick replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
Rocket has already admitted that the melee combat won't necessarily get better because the engine wasn't made with melee combat in mind. This is probably the best we're going to get save for some tweaks to when a zombie is knocked down or stunned. But "charging up" attacks or "pushing" won't happen. -
Ideas for dayz: SAFE ZONES and ROAMING HORDES

Safe zones = no. Hordes of roaming zombies? Yes. Already confirmed. -
i found mysterious book: the Island of Doctor Moreau
serenityrick replied to gamer222's topic in General Discussion
That would be great for an RP server. Have someone be a medic priest who reads scriptures to people as he's setting splints or giving saline transfusions :P -
DayZ SA - Initial Thoughts - Will it ever live up to it's potential?
serenityrick replied to Timma (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I know you said that you realize it's "alpha" but I don't know what to say other than.... It's alpha. One of your main gripes was lack of survivalist stuff.. that stuff is confirmed to be in the game. Hunting.. foraging.. cooking.. not implemented yet. When it is, I'm sure we'll see a reduction in food spawns so that people will have to start cooking and hunting. This will mostly take care of the loot hunt fear as in order to look for better gear, you'll have to take care of your survivor.. Rocket has already confirmed different diseases and sicknesses that players will have to be aware of. If you treat your survivor like dirt and eat nothing but canned spaghetti, your health will reduce and the effects of that food will have diminishing returns and you'll be more susceptible to different diseases. This means you have to be aware of what you eat, what you drink, where you go and what supplies you carry. I really don't think it will be a race to whomever gets to the NWAF because you'll be busy trying to keep yourself alive At least I hope so. That's the impression I got from Dean from all his recent interviews. In terms of the whole pvp/loot hunt stuff... the game will go a long way by removing military spawns in the south/near the coast.. or at least remove the possibility of weapons spawning there. The occasional camo jacket or helmet would be fine. But the military grade weapons and equipment should be a long term goal in the north/inland and be super rare. As it is, you can go to a newly restarted server and deck yourself out in less than 10 minutes. -
I actually like this. You should be able to jog for as long as you want but sprinting should be tied directly to your health. If you're on full health and full blood, you can sprint for maybe 60 seconds. Any longer and you start some messages: I feel exhaustedMy legs hurtI feel like I'm going to throw upI'm going to throw up. If you're sick or have a broken leg (reduced Health), the amount you're able to sprint is reduced drastically, like only a few seconds. Enough to sprint from cover to cover, not long distances.

The M4 sound is very bad, along with the ballistics
serenityrick replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
You know.. saying "inb4it'salpha" doesn't suddenly make that answer not legit... Rocket and the rest of the team has said numerous times that the sounds aren't anywhere close to being final. In Dean's words "audio is the easy part". They want to nail down the mechanics first during the alpha. -

The RV engine is the worst engine ever made.
serenityrick replied to EchelonEffect's topic in General Discussion
Rust looks awful... Standing on a hill overlooking a field or city in DayZ SA looks amazing and it's not even close to being optimized yet. As for other games bringing the scale that the RV engine does? Nope. Not without loading times and instances. Not with 50-100 players. -
Suggestion: Consume ENTIRE item
serenityrick replied to GrumpyGat (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I actually like it how it is. It should take time to sit down and eat. Not just right click, eat an entire can in 3 seconds and be on your way. So the next solution would be "well, it can take the same amount of time, just require one click".. I still prefer the former method because if you hear someone or something coming around the corner, you can ready yourself rather quickly whereas with the latter, you'd have to wait out the ~30 seconds. Unless they implement some sort of "cancel action" button but I think that would cause some issues as it might be difficult for the game/server to recognize when you stopped eating and how much food is left in the container. Just stick with what we have. It's fine. The only issue I have with it is that it takes a few seconds too long from the time you stop eating to when you can put the can back in your hands. It's a little irritating. -
Sorry. I can't do it. I can't feel bad for people who kill undergeared players near starter towns. One of the rare times I'm glad someone ghosted in this game.

DayZ SA Pros & Cons list [+suggestions]

You: Doesn't sound like you know it to me. I found the nearest water pump, ate a few cans of food and didn't have another thirst/hunger message for hours. -
fast and highly observant zombies are bad for the game
serenityrick replied to Antiklimax's topic in General Discussion
Let's say all the bugs are worked out regarding zombies and their wall hacking and hitting through ceilings finally stops.. this is my personal wishlist for them in terms of their behavior and thread: Zombies should be slightly faster than the players. This would up their threat considerably. If you're playing alone and you're careless in a town or city and alert a hoard of them, you should instantly feel panic set in because you won't be able to outrun them. You have to find a place to hide and hopefully line of sight some of them and fend off the ones that found you... or die trying.Zombies, when aggroed, should constantly be screeching and growling and yelling. Perhaps their screeching intensifies as they get right up on you. Having the same few audio bites play every couple seconds is meh.. Having multiple zombies moaning and shrieking as they are hot on your tail would be absolutely terrifying especially given that you won't be able to outrun them forever.Short and sweet. Those two things would be fantastic in my opinion. Having them be a threat would definitely encourage people to team up and co-operate. Having them run faster would also serve the purpose of making obsolete having a designated player who just runs in, gathers a train of zombies so another player can go in and loot a town. On the surface it sounds good because it encourages team work.. but there's just something lame about someone running in circles forever where the zombies will never catch up or do any damage. It's predictable and shallow game-play. On the player side of things, stealth should be easier to achieve. In the mod, you had a GUI telling you how exposed you were and obviously that won't be the case in this game.. And in the mod, the best way to bypass zombies was going prone in a town. This however made things rather boring and slow going.. so in the SA, crouching should be good enough to bypass zombies unless you were in their direct line of sight. Standing up, shining lights or making noise would be near suicide in a town with a lot of zombies though. -
DayZ SA Pros & Cons list [+suggestions]
serenityrick replied to whatisthis's topic in General Discussion
If you're getting the thirsty/hunger message all the time it's because you're doing it wrong. Those messages signify dangerous levels of dehydration or hunger. It would be like going for a run all day without water in real life and being like "damn! I'm thirsty!" and going to the fridge, pouring yourself a half glass of water and thinking you'll be fine. You're thirst may be quenched for a little bit, but you didn't get enough water, plain and simple. Same deal in the game. You only drank (or ate) just enough to stave off dehydration/hunger for another few minutes. When you find a water pump, spam the action key and keep drinking until your stomach is FULL. You won't have to see another thirst message for hours. Same deal with eating. Don't hoard food. Eat everything you come across. Preferably, you want to get some food in your stomach before you completely fill it with water. Once you realize this, your "issue" with the hunger/thirst system will completely go away. -
Wouldn't happen. Rocket said that they specifically only have one basic zombie model so that they can have many of them on screen at once. Having the servers populate 3 different ones would be far too taxing I imagine

Got attacked in Cherno, when I was editing the video I noticed he had been following me the whole night.

Hot keys for flashlights, bipod...

I believe once it's in your hand, you can use the context menu (middle mouse click) to turn flashlights on and off. May not be the same way with headlamps though -

Ideas for Hunting/New Equipment for Standalone
serenityrick replied to TIC's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Just to add the OP, perhaps residential houses (and hunting stands of course) have a chance to spawn Deer musk gland tinctures or deer urine. Applying these to yourself can have pros and cons. Pros: Allow you to approach deer more easily. Probably key for hunting with a bow or crossbow. Cons: Zeds aggro range is increased if you go into a city without washing it off To wash it off, simply right click a water source (canteen, water bottle, water well) and select "wash off deer tincture/urine".. or simply wade into a pond.
