Rocket answers to everyone who complains about 3D view
Zombie Jesus replied to gamer222's topic in General Discussion
Lol hyperbole much? Men raise children as a good fathers and are good in the community (real life). Children ascribe manliness ratings to inconsequential bullshit. -
What do you think of people calling Kill on Sight players ... "kids"?
Zombie Jesus replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
I always laugh when called a kid, I just tell them nah I am just still a dick at 30. -
I like having more than one character. When my buddies play we all log out at the same area and now that there is a separate hive I can just play a different character to lone wolf with. I enjoy both perspectives so I do not really care that I am in 1PP only as a lone wolf plus I do not have to run for 30 minutes after I die just to play with buddies during our next session. Limited restarts? For a game you bought you actually want it to lock you out of playing, man the internet is a strange place.

There's no reason to go to the NWAF or the north anymore (here's why)
Zombie Jesus replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
There is actually another military base close to the NWAF that makes the area more profitable than Balota, but I think the idea of giving the map more hotspots was the correct response to the relatively boring aspect of the mod. I never really thought the NWAF was as dangerous as other people made it out to be, there was always plenty of cover when going to the best loot spots and sniping people in those areas was never that easy. I died far more frequently in Stary and while I would often find players at the NWAF the engagements were rarely as boring as getting sniped at the tents in Stary. Once more features are added that require exploration there will be people dispersed to different areas of the map including the NWAF. I hate the canned "its Alpha" response to every thread but in this instance the game truly is bare bones without any feature besides weapons and PvP. If base building is added or at least storage like tents people will wander toward the northern area to set up camp and once vehicles are added you will see people scavenging for those and supplies off the coast as well. If they made the NWAF the only place to find military loot at this stage of development quite a few people would quickly tire of the grind of running up to that area only to be killed by someone camping, so at this stage of development at leas you only had to run to Balota. The point I am making is having multiple hotspots for loot will eventually make the game better, especially once server population increases. I do love the suggestion of having a broke down C-130 or something of value on the runway though, would definitely add to the atmosphere of the area. -
Think im gonna uninstall / wait till its fixed.
Zombie Jesus replied to dirby12's topic in General Discussion
How dare an Alpha have issues in the first couple of months. In reality there is a all caps warning when buying the game and a warning every time that you log in. If it is too big of a deal you are doing the right thing by waiting until the game is more stable. People who do not want to play a buggy Alpha should refrain from buying buggy Alphas. -
Sort of surprised this is even a discussion. Of course we need features and goals to work toward and vehicles are one of those goals. They are bullet magnets so I think some are overstating how over powered they are and before the 10,000+ fully repaired vehicle servers they were not that easy to repair or come by. Anyone who thinks it should take more than an hour or two of looting and repairing is being absurd, it is a game and taking an hour to find parts and repair a vehicle is not easy mode by any definition.

Bummed that the Mosin has become even more unwieldy. I could live with a single shot with a long animation but I hate going into my inventory just to reload the weapon. Rust overtook DayZ as the number 1 game on Steam yesterday (or longer I only noticed yesterday) but that does not mean they have sold more overall. Both games are enjoyable and different so there is no reason to really hate on either one as a fan of one over the other. This is not WarZ and a shameless ripoff and it is nice to see two games like DayZ and Rust rule the Steam charts over the past month. If anything it is a win for the little guy if either is listed as the top seller.

[POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners
Zombie Jesus replied to floj's topic in General Discussion
To be fair the main purpose of this discussion and the other recent discussion was whether there was a demand for removing the exploits from third person and many people have valid points. I enjoy 3PP (less so lately) and would never advocate for its removal, but I would be fine with cleaning up some of the more glaring exploits as long as the fixes were not game breaking. Anything that would make the game look terrible is not something I would be cool with, but other fixes seem like they could easily be implemented without much development time wasted. I am sure many on this thread think it should be THE focus for the developers and I am not one of those people either, but I would like to see them tweak 3PP and remove the low hanging fruit as far as exploits go. -
So Experimental Is Finally Out. Too bad there are no servers.
Zombie Jesus replied to koNtenT's topic in General Discussion
Go to your filter and put the ping at 500 and you will most likely see the experimental servers. -

[POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners
Zombie Jesus replied to floj's topic in General Discussion
I swear I am not trying to be a dick but these polls do not tell you much about the general playerbase. It is a somewhat good indicator of what people on the forum think and that is all, even there it is not that useful since it was not a random sample and is being taken only by those who stumble across the question on the forums. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_bias As a quick snapshot of the forum's attitude it somewhat works, but no other conclusions can be drawn from the poll about the actual DayZ SA player population. /mathnerdrantover Good for us it falls prey to the exact same sampling bias that I just linked. A reliable poll will randomly sample people with everyone having the same chance of being surveyed. This poll and the poll you linked do not fit that category making them both irrelevant. "The majority of dayz players want 3rd person removed." The sad part of that quote is I bet you actually believe what you are saying. First problem is the ONLY objective source of information we have is server lists and server populations and that clearly shows that you are wrong. People point out that they play on 3PP servers due to friends not wanting to play (which points to a higher percentage of people wanting 3PP only but whatever) and not enough servers with low ping (which also points to lack of demand). Those are both true but even with those factors I find it hard to believe a full 58% of the general DayZ playerbase wants 1PP as the only option when so few 1PP servers are populated. -
That is not how you forum, you forum by getting angry. As far as a fresh perspective or even a great fix that pleases both sides I really doubt that will ever happen. 3PP will never be fixed completely since there are plenty of games that have that perspective and almost all of them have exploits attached. DayZ and Arma has a feature I love but makes these exploits even worse with alt free look (sort of makes up for realistic turning speeds), so they could remove that although that would probably cause some anger. They could force to first while prone (I actually hope this one happens) but the corner camping, sitting behind trees, and hill line exploits will probably always be an issue. People who have a huge ax to grind will be upset that those exploits remain while others will call it a necessary evil while playing the perspective they enjoy. Maybe 4th wall is possible but my bet is it is not worth the issues it would cause with coding, server issues, lag, etc. If it was easy it would have been done, otherwise the developers have more pressing concerns. As always it is just my humble opinion and I am frequently wrong.

Admin privileges and server time rant
Zombie Jesus replied to Petrollium's topic in General Discussion
The irony of that from someone who cries about other server options constantly. Also for everyone else I know it is abused but server restarts sometimes need to happen. -
Fine, I posted two other valid (by your opinion lol) arguments as well. In fact I even discussed the exploits you mentioned so I think your post is misdirected to say the least. I could even go farther with "valid" arguments like the fact that many people have trouble running BI games at decent frame rates and frame rate issues look horrible in 1PP compared to 3PP (I will internet slap the first person who says upgrade, it is expensive to upgrade every two years and while I have the means to do so looking down on those who do not is elitist). But enjoyment in gaming is always a valid argument. You guys can call this an anti game or hardcore survival but the reason people are drawn to that experience is to enjoy that experience. Some parts of the game are admittedly not that enjoyable (I have never loved a 20 minute run to some of the areas of the map) but that adds to the atmosphere of having to navigate without a map and the fact that even in a field all the way up north you can still be killed by someone who notices you. It creates the atmosphere that many people are drawn to. The developer is always going to balance atmosphere and entertainment, there is a point where the developer could go too far and just create a game most people get no enjoyment out of playing.
-
The thing that really made 1PP more enjoyable for myself was a better computer. Many of the issues I had with first person was the frame rate issues are much more off putting in 1PP and I suspect many others have the same issue considering the optimization issues of all BI games. I do hate mouse acceleration though and look forward to being able to configure that properly. I always disliked the exploitable aspects of 3PP but lived with them since a smoother gameplay experience was more important personally, but I do agree more people who enjoy 3PP should want the big exploits addressed. I guess I am not allowed to enjoy a brutal and unforgiving zombie apocalypse. So when you fire up DayZ you have this overwhelming feeling of dread that you now have to play a game, that does not sound like the experience the developer was aiming for.
-
Lol it is easy to win an argument when you only pick the arguments you wish to address. For the one millionth time 3PP gives spatial awareness that is severely lacking in DayZ and Arma in general. I do not walk into objects all the time in my day to day life, but in first person navigating a hallway can be a pain. The sound is not that great for echo location although that is a separate issue but it does come into play when discussing realism in 1PP. The other large argument is this game is not strictly a shooter. The vast majority of time spent playing DayZ is spent running in the woods and looting in desolation and both of those activities are often more enjoyable visually in 3PP. Enjoyment is part of gaming so it is a valid argument to bring up even if some want to label it casual Cod nonsense or whatever other arguments being thrown around. I will admit to the sin of playing games for enjoyment, sorry to ruin your hardcore brutal experience with joy. I am actually very interested in fixes to 3PP that remove certain exploits, but the people who want to turn it into a 1PP game only are fighting a losing battle. As Rocket himself has pointed out 3PP is far more popular, a quick look at the server list will show you the same result. You know why developers never cite forum polls, because forum polls are garbage. If you guys keep posting nonsense about how hardcore it is you will see 100 more posts telling you to go play on the 1PP servers with the last statement being problem solved (which is somewhat valid but it has been discussed to death so not worth the circular posts).
-
The real question is how much of a priority would you put on fixing 3PP at this point in the Alpha? I know quite a few people think it is top priority, but many like myself would be more interested in content being added, zombie pathfinding, zombie numbers and spawning, and loot balancing and spawning taking a higher priority. Would love to see some quick fixes but we all have to remember it is not as easy as adding a script for Arma since that was the reason to move to standalone architecture. I realize some might disagree but I am wondering how urgent you think the issue truly is at this time? Are we talking implementation during Alpha, Beta, or retail release?

The polls are useless and I stand by that statement 100%. It is a voluntary forum poll and by no means represents a truly random sample. The example I gave earlier is a perfect comparison, asking people on a conservative website their feelings about Obama would not be representative of the population at large. The Forum and Reddit are populated by people who play DayZ but often have a different mindset than the general population. Then you have the problem of making it 100% voluntary to those users who actually stumble across the topic. If you had said the poll indicates forum users prefer 1PP I would have no grounds to challenge you, but since you specifically said the polls indicate players prefer 1PP I called you out on having a poor understanding of how to present useful data. The polls in question indicate nothing but the preference of the few forum users who actually answered the question, any other conclusion is so fraught with bias and sampling problems that it makes the poll...useless. I don't have to challenge you with an equally useless poll, that would just double down on this stupidity. Your beef is with math, not with me. I am not challenging you to be a jerk, I am challenging you because you are taking garbage polls and using them to make conclusions. We have both gone way off topic though and frankly I have been enjoying 1PP servers lately. It is different and maybe more people will come around and hopefully some of the exploits can be reduced in 3PP to make those servers more enjoyable. I like the spatial awareness of 3PP but the roof camping and corner peeking gets old and I too have experienced the terrible 3PP camping standoffs that these servers produce.
-
Maybe you have never taken a statistics course (apparently you have, your professor would be ashamed to see you defend these sources) but even 1000 participants in that type of poll is massively flawed. Lets start with the obvious that many of the polls have biased questions or introductions from the start. Then you have to consider where the poll is being offered. But the main reason the poll is 100% useless as a barometer for DayZ players is the fact that it was a voluntary poll on a forum. To get a real idea of what the actual preference was you would have to randomly sample players of the game using a non biased questionnaire, not offer a voluntary poll on a forum. Then you would have to ask the actual question of preference, not some stupid question like "would you continue playing if 3PP was taken out of the game." If you ask that question you are getting the answer to a completely separate question and can make no inferences on the player bases preferences.

Let the game develop on its own for quite some time and after full release I would love to see modding. It could extend the life of the game and allowing creativity can produce some great experiences. There is a downside (1000+ YoloSwag server with full sniper loadout self bloodbag x-ray vision server), but the upside is giving the game a far longer lifespan and far more content for the players. I think the pros outweigh the cons in a long term debate, but in the short term I would love to see the developers get a shot at staking out their vision for the game. Plus I find it sad that gamers are so happy to give up modding in favor of corporate control of gaming (damn I sound like a hippy), this is the reason every game has DLC and real money marketplaces. I am glad there is still a small slice of gaming that allows for outside innovation and I would hope it would expand to more games and not contract. Sure you have to put up with some terrible mods, but it is worth it for the gems that are often produced outside of the traditional avenues (like DayZ mod itself). Bad_mojo pointed out that a map editor at this point in development would be a great addition and I have to agree. It is win win for the developers as well, they could allow for extra maps without having to waste development time on making them. Sure a good amount of them would suck (cough Fallujah), but we might get some great additions like Lingor and Namalsk.

I bet if you take a poll on an ultra right wing website you might think Barack Obama is the Anti Christ Socialist from Kenya, that does not mean the majority of the people actually believe that viewpoint. Learn how statistics work and how to actually analyze a population's views in a statistically relevant manner and come back and post that sentence again without feeling dirty. Since no valid poll has ever been conducted (and to top it off the poll you are referencing did not even ask the preference it only asked if people would still play if 3PP was removed) lets not get bogged down in which perspective is actually in the majority. If we are going by the only non biased source which is server populations then it is clear, but even there many have pointed out the problems with using that as a source so it is not bullet proof either. I actually think some of the ideas in this thread were worth the read and it is nice to see Tommes making relevant points and not getting frustrated with other users. I have actually learned to enjoy 1PP with my newly upgraded computer so maybe with increased optimization more people will find themselves enjoying 1PP as the game performs better. I have made it well known that I am never in favor of removing variety so do not count me as a full convert, but I would love to see some of the exploits removed and so far some decent ideas have been presented. Whether or not they are feasible with the current architecture remains to be seen, but we can all hope for a better game.

Lol, slow clap for the flame. Rocket worked for Bohemia when the mod was created and it generated a huge amount of sales for Arma 2, so it is inaccurate to say it was not generating any income for the company. I also have to laugh at children (or adults with the mind of a child) who somehow think making money for work is a sin. Unless you plan on never receiving compensation for your work you have no room to talk. Come up with a good idea that almost a million people will buy within a month and maybe you can have dat DayZ lambo money. Most likely you will spend your life whining that other people have the ability to make money through hard work while you feel entitled to also share in that wealth without having to do the actual work. To the OP, yea there will be official content added but as far as the direction of that content it still remains somewhat up in the air. They have spoken about base building, tons of items/weapons, and of course completely redone vehicles, but the other content that comes in will most likely have to do with crafting and a deeper medical system. If modding is allowed you will see diversity in the SA just like you did with all the various mods of the mod. So my best bet would be the SA will eventually enjoy a good amount of content, but only time will tell how much diversity is allowed through modding.

Only way to really fix these issues is with private hives.
Zombie Jesus replied to Mullucka's topic in General Discussion
Combat logging solution. Thirty second timer for logout. Ghosting solution, two to five minute timeout on rejoining a server. Long enough to make ghosting a bad idea but not long enough to make server crashes or other unexpected reasons for leaving and rejoining a huge burden. Server hopping solution...got me there. -
Only way to really fix these issues is with private hives.
Zombie Jesus replied to Mullucka's topic in General Discussion
The persistent character is a way to minimize loss from a server being shut down or otherwise unavailable. Sure you would lose all of your stored gear and vehicles, but at least you can walk away with the gear you have on your character. I always liked having multiple servers but it did get confusing from time to time and if they at least minimized server hopping I would be fine with a hive. Private servers do nothing to stop combat logging though since they can just wait or join another server and come back later and still have a all their gear on the original server. If they added a timer to rejoining a server ghosting would not be effective so that fix is fairly easy, the hardest fix is server hopping. -
Usually it is server lag. Sometimes it has to do with the client's internet but usually it is happening to everyone. Edit: Although I am sure Damn Yankees has something to do with it.
