Better performance, but at what cost?

Here's a few un-doctored DayZ SA screenshots from the pre-alpha build, make of it what you will but I see a vast improvement over what the average DayZ player currently experiences, goodbye potato textures:

Yeh I know but calling it a clusterfuck is over-egging the pudding. It was dealt with quickly. There's a very long list of multiplayer game releases that have gone a hell of a lot worse, most of them by bigger companies with much more resources to draw on too. We are now in the Beta for Arma 3 and so far I'm really impressed with both the content and the polish. If DayZ follows a similar path I'll be a happy bunny.

    What happened to TheLaughingMan?

As far as I understand it, several of his ex-admins posted up videos of his other admins abusing their admin tools. They made a thread about it on our forums somewhere. Laughingman responded to the claims but basically brushed them off. People called him out on it repeatedly and cited other examples of abuse too. After that someone else posted a Skype call he had with a hacker in which he was discussing attacking a rivals server. There were also many other claims made saying he attacked his rivals servers to try and keep the top spot. He did try and defend himself from all of the accusations for a while but there were many and his servers started slipping down the rankings. Some time passed and it seems he shut them all down and disappeared. It's only a name though, he probably adopted another name and carried on with something similar, who knows? When lot's of money is involved (he ran pay-to-win servers) it must be hard to give up.

Better performance, but at what cost?

No, that's just an elegant solution to the fact that there will be hundreds of thousands of items on a map at any given moment, something that never happens in Arma. Also, think about their workflow. They want to create thousands of items to be used in-game. If each one of those items needs to be highly detailed (model-wise) it's thousands of hours of work for the modelers. Remember BIS isn't a massive studio and people are already itchy for content. Having simpler models will allow them to create many more items in a shorter period. The detail will come from the textures. If it's done well then the items can look great. Bethesda use a similar method for games like Skyrim and for the same reason. Their in-game items look great but if you inspect them closely you can see that the actual models themselves are fairly simple, it's the textures and/or bump-mapping that make them look sweet.

[SA] Looting Empty/Depleted Magazines and Individual bullets

Don't quote me on it but I think in an interview Matt Lightfoot pretty much confirmed this for the SA. Not so much the finding an individual bullet at a loot spawn but the fact that you could keep your empty magazines (or find them) and then transfer clips between the magazines for use in different weapons.

    squad identification

You mean exactly like the Squad xml. currently used in Arma and that some people use in the mod already? It's easily doable, just a case of if it fits with rockets plans I guess. He talked about clans etc and discussed things like tatoos and so on so it's not out of the question.
  7. That's exactly the same as me! It's as if we were separated at birth.

    DayZ Fan Art Thread

Lovely image. Welcome back btw ;)
  9. Yeh it does sound like everyone's being PC fanboy but it's just a fact that with fps games a mouse and keyboard is superior. I like using a gamepad for some games (Assasins Creed and so on) but not anything that involves pvp and guns generally, you just can't be competative. I've been messing about with my Xbox controller in Arma 2 and using it for vehicle control and it's actually working out really nicely. My plan is to have the controller on my desk/lap and when I hop into a car I can just pick up the controller and use that, it's the best of both worlds and sooooooooooooooooooo much easier to drive with.

    MY EYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. MAKE IT STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP.

Better performance, but at what cost?

It already looks much nicer than the mod and more people will be able to experience it looking like that due to better optimisation. If you look at most gameplay footage of the average player playing DayZ it looks like they're playing on a potato and many don't even have the high res textures for many of the models. Most simply turn all of their graphics options all the way down to get an acceptable frame rate. Only people lucky enough to have (very) decent rigs actually think Arma 2 looks nice, many have never seen it in all it's glory even though they can play other games on high settings. It's an issue that needs to be addressed.

Will the SA Ever Feel like This?

So in a survival situation we shouldn't value our gear? That's bonkers and I'd argue the complete opposite. Of course our knowledge and abilities is the most important thing and that carries from life to life, our gear doesn't so of course it should and will have value. Anyhoo, I have to run now, nice chatting with you :)

Will the SA Ever Feel like This?

Well I guess pvp and kos are 2 separate debates. I love pvp and I accept (and always have done) that kos will always be a part of DayZ. It's honestly never really bothered me, I just see it as part of the game and another risk to take into account. In the SA, people will still KOS nothing will change that but having more consequences and making people have to consider their actions more (for example, maybe you only have 15 rounds for you DMR instead of 5 clips) will affect gameplay for the better in my humble opinion.

Will the SA Ever Feel like This?

Lol, wanting weapons to be rare doesn't make people a carebear. That's a lazy response. Wanting EVERYTHING you collect, craft and salvage to have value can only be achieved through the player having to work for it, items being rare or at least not growing on trees is an important part of that. Calling people that disagree with you carebares is stupid: I love pvp, I love intense firefights, I love being sniped at from a hill when I least expect it. I've played on the RV engine since OFP. I'd argue that having value attached to your gear makes those firefights more intense than it is in a game where you can just grab yourself a new gun and try again. I really don't know how else to spell it out for you. Many people that want items in DayZ to be rare, or at least rarer than now (including guns) are liking it because everything is more intense when items have value, that does not mean people want to avoid conflicts and sit in the woods singing "cum-by-yah", it means they want added intensity to conflicts and enjoy having their pulse go through the roof because their character and items have value attached unlike most other fps or pvp games. In fact I'd say the carebears are the ones wanting loot growing on trees because they're too scared to enter a gunfight knowing their precious loot could be lost and it'll take effort retrieve it.

    Bullet proof bushes

Sounds more like a hacker than a buggy bush to me.

Will the SA Ever Feel like This?

Yup, the game probably will lose a lot of those players, that doesn't really worry me because I'm not sure it was ever really aimed at players who want constant pvp anyway, we have other games for that including Arma 3 where you have a whole warchest of military toys to use whenever you want. It will also gain many players that it became disheartened over the mod when the playerbase shifted over the months it was at it's height last year so no harm done really. I personally love pvp but in Dayz that needs to be within the context of a survival situation where other factors come into play that you don't have to consider in other games that have pvp elements. That's what makes it unique. If weapons are easy-come-easy-go then we might as well play Arma.

    Regarding the radio in SA

As with most things being tried out for the alpha, much of it is experimental and will rely heavily on player feedback once we're playing to see which direction it takes and if it will be included in the final release at all. IMO people need to generally chill out about seeing new things being added. If new things/ideas aren't added or at least attempted then we may as well stick to the mod. Something being tried out does not mean it's written in stone, the game will evolve over development largely based on player feedback/statistics etc. Many of the things we're seeing haven't been tried in any game before, EVER, so it's only natural to be skeptical about it but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be attempted, in fact I think that's precisely why it should be attempted. I've seen so many hysterical posts recently (not you Victus) where people see a new feature such as food having certain calories and so on, then take that idea to the most extreme conclusion in order to state why it's rubbish. When we see a new idea being implimented, we need to remember that it is one small thing amongst many that will make up the game and that as an idea/concept it will evolve throughout alpha and beta testing. That's my opinion anyway.

    Regarding the radio in SA

No need to panic. Firstly you need to remember they'll probably be rare. Secondly you need to remeber they will require batteries which will probably be rarer. Thirdly you need to remember that you can shoot people that piss you off. Technically, think of how VOIP works now for direct chat in-game. The radios are basically an extension of that already existing feature.

    Radio station music in standalone?

Yes, in the same presentation that they showed the radios, he also said they are now accepting community submissions for people to host their own stations. Many people seem to have watched his DEMONSTRATION of him playing an 80's tune and overlooked everything else said about it.

    Rezzed - June 2013 - Developer Session

Rocket *wakes up and tweets "urhghghg... I feel weak today". 10 minutes later: IGN Exclusive!: DayZ SA confirmed to be released within the week! Honestly it drives me nuts though and over half of my posts (literally) are correcting people that post mis-information after Rocket has said something or demonstrated something. At Rezzed he DEMONSTRATED a radio and how it would work in game. To do that he played an 80's song. He also said that they are accepting player submissions for radio stations and clearly said that radio content will be community driven. Somehow people just see the radio and hear the song and then and completely manage to miss or ignore everything else said about it and think everyone in the SA will be running around playing 80's classics, it drives me bonkers.
