July Round-up: "I want the alpha" < "I want the alpha to be good"

Her arms are too long. -
Nice one. I've never heard of "Pivot" but I work with After Effects a lot so might check it out. What's the reason you choose it over other animation software?
-
It's really good! I tried fixing the link but for some reason occasionally they don't work, I'll give another mod a shout to see if he can sort it. I liked and subscribed because that's the sort of animation I enjoy. Moved to gallery ;) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

We all know about the December release date and why it was missed, it was explained at length in various interviews and the devblog. I think it's the misconception that they've missed multiple release dates that rustles people jimmies. -

But that was a few months ago now and you know the situation has changed :/ There's only so long you can keep digging up the December thing to make a point, things have moved on since then and that is well in the past. -

When you say more you mean quicker, right? They're working as fast as they can, the fact is as Rocket clearly says on that Reddit thread there is certain things that simply have to be in place before a public release, those things aren't quite ready yet. That's just how it is. -

It's playable when it's not completely broken. We've barely been able to test it for the last week due to a game-breaking glitch. If you'd have purchased the alpha and then not had access to it for a week would you be happy? Probably not. Even though people expect to find bugs in alpha it still needs to be stable. -

VERY few games write an entire engine from scratch. Most game devs do exactly what the DayZ devs are doing, take an existing engine that suits their needs and then work with it. -

See, I think it's because people think the devs keep missing release dates that their impatience grows out of control. When you ask people which dates they mean they usually quote somebody that was just speculating about a date based on a mis-quote. 6 months is a VERY short time in terms of game development.- 526 replies

ARMA 3 DAYZ VS STANDALONE
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to The Jackall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Regrding motorbike helmets please, please....PLEASE try and understand that what you have been shown is a development build. Yes they will exist in game as will many other types of clothing. Many of your points seem to be a result of looking at a PRE-ALPHA DEVELOPMENT BUILD and thinking that's the final product. Use your imagination about what will be added over the next few months and the potential that will have for gameplay. -
ARMA 3 DAYZ VS STANDALONE
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to The Jackall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm gonna be a bit lazy here and quote myself from another post a made on a similar topic a couple of weeks ago because I feel it applies equally to your post and the points you've made: The mod and all of the variations of it have one thing holding them back, they are mods. With that comes many problems, even if ported into Arma 3 for improved visuals these problems will remain or even get worse as Arma 3 is still in heavy development itself and it will introduce many more issues that the modders aren't familiar with, that's why DayZ is using it's own variation of the RV engine. Seemingly "small" things being added to the SA will change the overall gameplay immensely. Some mods have basic crafting but it will always be fighting against the engine because as a mod, the developers can't change that, they can just tweak code. The SA devs can actually re-code the engine itself to suit the needs of a game like DayZ, they have people on the team that helped make the engine itself so understand it better than any modder could ever hope to. For the SA the devs will eventually be adding THOUSANDS of new items ranging from survival equipment, crafted melee weapons, weapon modifications such as butt-stocks and fore-grips, vehicle parts to hundreds of new items of clothing all of which will have their own advantage/disadvantages and not just be there to look nice.. The new server architecture means that the scripting/hacking you see in the mod will literally no longer be possible although of course hacking will always be present as with any other mutiplayer game. It also adds the possibility of GLOBAL loot tables. The new disease mechanic that's been discussed by Rocket has never been attempted in ANY other game. Ever. It will be complex and a gaming first, it will dramatically change the way we play. The weather will become more important too. There's so many "small" things being changed that when added together form to make a very different game in terms of how we will approach survival within the game. I haven't even mentioned the plans he has for base-building, vehicle customisation, in-game streaming of live official radio stations or new maps yet but they're ambitious and a million miles beyond anything you've seen in the mod or any of the variations of it. For me it's pretty simple, the mod and all of it's spin-offs are going to be left far behind the SA. It will take time though, initially the public alpha will be released and some my not see the fundamental differences because content WILL be limited. As content gets added over time it will become apparent that the mods just won't be able to compete or keep up, they won't even be close, they'll be forever trapped in their constant cycles of patching and bugfixing where adding the simplest thing or making the smallest changes can break the whole mod whilst the SA strides forward offering us new and varied ways to play DayZ- 67 replies

There's literally no statistics to back that up because private hive numbers aren't recorded. Having said that, it's probably true, the hype for the mod can only last so long, for it still to be as popular as it is now with the limited content the mod offers is nothing short of a miracle and proves people want a game like DayZ. The SA isn't losing players though, it's not been released yet so has everything to gain (and to prove) and the only way to do that is to take the time needed to make a solid game. If it's released and then built on solidly over the next few months (year?) then people will want to play it, that's just a fact. If it's rushed out to try to capitalise on the mod-hype (which was the initial plan with the December release date for a ported mod) it'll fall at the first hurdle and lose any faith people had in it, if it does that then it really will be in trouble. It's not a first past the post system. DayZ already has peoples attention, attention many larger gaming companies would kill for, now they just need to release a good game to take advantage of that.

Fekkin sarcasm, always makes me look silly. I just thought you were really stupid :/
-
Well that's just silly. The mod was a proof of concept, the SA in time will hopefully fulfill the potential of that concept.

DayZ is draining at first...but it's fun.
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to RoyBloggins's topic in New Player Discussion
Firstly, I'd advise finding a server that doesn't start you off with gear etc. Sure it's nice and handy but the fact that everyone's starting like that means you're gonna get shot a lot more than usual as it's a PVP focused server so it's going to attract a lot of players who's sole aim is to have firefights. PVP is an important element of DayZ but not the focus. However, that's up to you really and how you like to play. Tents allow you to store your gear in them. They will stay there indefinately but hide it well because others can find it and steal your loot. -
And on that note, locked. See you in the SA.
-
Looks interesting. I think for now though Rocket can still sleep soundly at night. You say DayZ is too late and then try to prove your point by showing a buggy mod in alpha as competition. Ironic no?

Can you stop trying to live up to your name and either give some advice or move on please? Cheers. -
Yup, there's many more in the works too. Some that were predicted to wipe the floor with DayZ have already been released, more are to come, tis the way of the gaming industry. Nothing the DayZ devs can do about it apart from release an awesome game. If they rushed it, that's the last thing we'd get. Regarding the zeds etc, it's been explained many times why the development build looks like that, the clue is in the title though. Many animations are just placeholders etc. as are the sounds, when everything is in place it will all come together, until then, yes, it will look buggy and broken - that's what development builds look like.
