DayZ Standalone Discussion

Cool. I guess when I said gameplay-wise I meant how it actually plays differently. The things you mention are progress for sure. Exluding PhysX and DX11 lighting though the other things aren't unique to that engine, they're just general progress much of which is already taken care of or on the cards for the SA. Don't get me wrong, of course in an ideal world I think we'd all initially loved to see the SA using the Arma 3 engine (RV4) but there's many other things to consider especially from a development point of view and we also need to understand that would introduce many new issues and lengthen the development progress even further. The point I've been trying to make for the last few pages is that they just used the TOH version of the RV3 engine as a starting point (as did Arma 3). Adding thing like PhysX is not out of the question. A number being assigned to an engine just represents that iteration of the engine at that point in time. The engine for the SA is evolving, to keep calling it the Arma2 or TOH engine is already innacurate, it simply isn't that engine any more because there's been so many fundamental changes. When they started dveloping the SA they needed a solid base to work from, the RV4 engine was/is not that base as it's still in heavy development itself. Don't forget they have people on the team that built the engine itself and helped produce Arma 3 so I can't help but think you may be under estimating what they're capable of if given the time and space to do so. These guys know what they're doing which is why I find it slightly ironic sometimes when people compare the SA to a mod using the RV4 engine. The fact is the same people built or are building both. There's already been so many core changes to the SA that it's a different beast entirely now. It may not be apparent just yet but when the fundamentals are squared away and you start to get hit thick and fast with new content you''d have to be a very stubborn cynic not to be impressed. I respect all of the modders this community has (lets not forget that Rocket is/was one of them), they've kept the game alive but I honestly believe people that think a mod ported into the RV4 engine will be able to compete with the SA n terms of genuine progress and how we play the game are either missing something or in denial. Any mod will suffer the same problems, run into the same dead-ends and likely face many more bugs. That is the VERY reason Rocket moved onto the SA so quickly. Modding can only take you so far, I believe most of the DayZ spin-off mods have already reached their potential and are now just scraping the barrel trying to innovate where they simply can't due to the restrictions of modding a pre existing game. It's not a criticism of their talents it's just that they are severely limited as to what they can do within the confines of a mod. Adding some sexy new shading does not change the experience in the long term. The only version of DayZ that can now make any real progress is the SA itself. -

Well you can answer that yourself by looking at the screenies released with the last devblog :/ Here you go: http://rocketkiwi.tumblr.com/post/57212375532/dayzdev-screenshots-from-todays-multiplayer They weren't taken on highest settings but give a solid idea of the current build. Maybe as a player of that mod you could answer a question for me: DX11 lighting aside - Gameplay-wise, how is that mod significantly different to the current mod? -

Warning The creator of this thread has been attempting to make contact with our members to offer help - In fact he has been attempting to steal keys from them. He has been successful once so far to our knowledge. He has been banned but take this advice: Do not let people you do not trust 100% access to your PC in any way. Do not accept files from people you don't know and only download files from trusted sources. As a further precaution, discuss your issues publicly on the forums. You will receive more help and will not be put at risk. People attempting to steal keys will always try to get you to talk to them via PM/Skype etc. Failing to do that will put your PC security at risk and may lead to your key being stolen or worse.

Yeh, it does (or did) work well as temporary storage though. Eg: you're making a hospital run, you can just stash your goodies in the fireplace just outside of town and go grab your meds.

Well I'm glad people completely ignored my long-winded post explaining what game engines actually are... I do agree with you about night time lighting though, we'll have to see how that turns out, during the day atm in testing it's looking far nicer than Arma 2/the mod especially when the weather rolls in and the sun gets low in the sky. -
Maybe. not sure tbh, I haven't played in ages. OP might be on a private hive I guess.

Mk.48 Mod0. Mmmmmmmm. -
I used to use it a lot to store a few valuables before entering a dangerous area. It'll be interesting to see who else does though because people don't mention it very often.

I think in all honesty, a game like DayZ needs to be played with a mic. I know some peeps can't afford one (although they are super cheap now days) or need to be quiet at night etc and I know there are some deaf players too but the social element in DayZ is so important that without one it's like playing with your hands tied behind your back. If you run into a stranger that first 3-5 seconds of contact is so important that saying the right thing could stop a random killing. Communication is just so important in DayZ I honestly couldn't imagine playing it without a mic.

July Round-up: "I want the alpha" < "I want the alpha to be good"
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Hi. Please try to voice your opinion in a mature way without the abuse. It undermines your argument and causes pointless offense to other members. All opinions are welcome here, unprovoked abuse with a smattering of homophobia however is not. Warned and temp posting ban. -
I like it. kind of :/ It's more like a traditional MMO system with "speech bubbles" I guess one issue I could see with it is that when moving around as a group you'd have to be constantly moving your view to see what peeps are saying whereas atm you can just chat as long as you're near enough. I'm not sure peeps would like it for basic communication because to hear people IRL you don't actually have to look at them to hear them, they just need to be near by. It's hard for me to sympathise really because I've always played with a mic so I'm just used to chatting to whoever I want without too much thought.

Yeh don't worry, I wasn't meaning to be too harsh, unlike Inception up there lol^^^^ Anyhoo, head north where men are men and kills are are more satisfying. It'll put hairs on yer chest. I have 2 now just because of moving north. -

I guess if you hang out there you'll get a lot of peeps new to the game that are just trying to figure things out. Not so much stupid as just new and confused, it's like shooting fish in a barrel, not really a challenge. Real men head north ;) -
Hmmm, I never got killed as a medic, and I used to do it every day for a few months. Maybe it's because I always travelled as a pair with my sniper/spotter buddy. Also I didn't really offer any help on the coast to noobs, just peeps further inland or up north. If peeps just wanted thing delivered I told them where to stick it. I always made them drop their gear/weapons and move away from it while I approached them and then when it was safe I'd patch them up. Then, when moving away make sure they stand still or go prone with their back to me (you keep your gun on them and so does your sniper /spotter) then you disappear into the woods. I only had one or two guys try to ambush me but my sniper/spotter just dropped them before they could do me much damage or steal my meds. If you just run around delivering stuff and not really thinking too much, you'll die a lot. You just have to be strict with them. If they don't follow your orders they don't get your help, simple as that. Being a medic doesn't mean being a pussy - to do it well and survive for long periods you have to have constant supplies which means lots of trips to get meds, which means added risk. Also, make sure the "patient" knows that if they don't do exactly as you say they're gonna die. It's the only way to do it and stay safe. That's what I enjoyed about it, having to think tactfully to stay alive, it leads to some really tense situations and some awesome firefights when it all goes wrong. Ahhhh, those were the days. bring on the SA so I can dust off my medic bag QQ

Bandit is easy-mode ;) When you get some more advanced skills you should try being a medic. I love you bandits btw - plOx don't kill me.

@L3uX - Don't speak to people like that on our forum, especially when the'y are voluntary support staff and are trying to help you. 24hr posting ban issued, 1 warning point. That behaviour is unacceptable. Go and find help somewhere else.

I'd definately like to see some more info on the future of vehicles. We know that they're being fully overhauled at some point in the future and that the plan is to allow for vehicle customisation and swapping parts etc. as well as maybe crafting certain elements to aid that customisation. Dean also said they'd like to add more specific and realistic damage models, individual parts being damaged etc. I guess that's all a way off yet though so for now we can only speculate. If the handling could be improved over the traditionally bad Arma 2 handling then that would be pretty awesome. Time will tell I guess. -
