First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well one simple and easy fix that'd solve a few issues would be to just lock the horizontal plane of the camera. Just doing that alone would make it trickier (although still possible at distance) to use the cam to look over the edge of buildings and down from windows without exposing yourself. Maybe when you kneel or go prone the cam could tighten up to the player, slightly restricting the usual freedom it would give you but still allowing you to use it as your "peripheral" vision. Not sure really, there's lot's of potential ways of going about it without ruining the actual use of the 3rd person cam. Why do we need a 3rd person camera that allows us to look at the top of our own head? Anyone? -
First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think I'll try to explain one last time why I think that the 3rd person cam as it is now is detrimental to gameplay. For me it's not about realism, authenticity, being hardcore or an old-school DayZ hipster or any of the other things that get levelled at you when you dare to suggest changing something that has become the norm. It really is purely about gameplay and I think the 3rd person cam currently does need "fixing". Here's one gameplay example where for me the 3rd person cam massively detracts from what could be potentially awesome gameplay scenario. So you're in the new Cherno/Electro, scouring the streets for loot, moving from cover to cover and being a very careful and tactful player. Now let's remember that in the new Chrernarus almost every building is enterable and in the cities most of those buildings now have multiple floors with windows overlooking the streets. These vantage points (and there's now a lot of them) simply don't exist in the mod so currently you only really have a few rooftops to worry about. Now a careful player will be keeping his eyes on the windows and rooftops looking for movement, potential snipers or just any general threat. You may even be part of a team, in which case it'd be wise to get one of your team mates constantly looking at the windows overlooking your position while you go about your business. But there's a problem here. The 3rd person cam allows anyone inside those new interiors to look out of the windows and scan the surroundings without having to physically look out, they can just manipulate the cam to the right angle and stay completely hidden. But hey, it's ok right? I have 3rd person cam too so it's fair right? Well not really no. I can't use my 3rd person cam to scan the inside of all of the buildings and vantage points around me so I'm now confronted by a street with many windows and rooftops, all of which could potentially have a player in them looking straight at me, the problem is there's no way of me knowing. It's now irrelevant how good my tactics are or how careful I am, I only have two choices: Avoid that street altogether or take a massive gamble and head down the street with no way of knowing if I'm being watched and potentially sniped. Common sense dictates to me that I now have to avoid every major street with windows overlooking it because I simply have no way of detecting any potential threats there, it's just a massive gamble (more than it should be) everytime I enter one of those streets. This is just one of countless scenarios I can think of in which the 3rd person cam (as it currently is) massively detracts from the potential gameplay in a certain situation. I'm not arguing to have it removed, I'm saying in certain scenarios it need restricting so as to avoid situations like the one above. -

Again - So lets assume it's not going to be removed but instead tweaked for the SA (as suggested by Dean at Gamescom). No need to get pissed off with me because I don't like 3rd person cams, the fact is it's probably not going anywhere. My opinion carries no more weight than yours, they'll be reading this thread. AGAIN though, they are looking at ways to adjust it so now's your chance to give your ideas of how that could be done. This is just a discussion, please keep your toys firmly in your prams. -

Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I just want to hear some nice ideas for maybe restricting the 3rd person cam a bit. Is that too much to ask? I highly doubt Dean will completely remove the 3rd person cam but he has said they'll look at ways of changing how it works so that it can't be used to look around corners and and over walls etc. With that in mind here is our/your chance to speak directly to the devs and let them know how you think that could be done, don't waste it by banging on about the same old shite for page after page. It's an issue that needs to be addressed, here's where you get to say how you think that could be achieved. There are many things currently in the mod that are a direct side effect of it being a mod of Arma 2 (map markers, name plates, legs breaking in a gust of wind etc.) These weren't design choices for the mod, they are there by default. The SA isn't a mod so these issues need to be discussed as there is now an opportunity for the devs to build the game as they see fit. Hint - Saying it doesn't need fixing is not a solution the devs are looking for. -

Same here :/ If you think a magical periscope cam that allows people in a game like this to look around corners and over tall walls without risk isn't broken then I'd suggest maybe you just got too used to it. I also get the feeling you've just jumped onto the end of this thread and haven't read much of the solid reasoning already offered for needing it to be sorted. If you read my other posts you'll see that yes, I do want as many options as possible removed from server admins. -

Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I thought we'd moved on to discussing a decent compromise? Look, people that want it removed and people that don't are literally never going to agree. There can be no debate about the fact that currently the 3rd person camera in DayZ has too much freedom of movement allowing players to exploit it, that is just a fact. Surly the next logical step is to discuss how it could be fixed to keep everyone happy. -

It completely baffles me how these journos actually manage to get paid for this shite tbh. I thought this was a 2 month old story, but no, some bright spark has today decided this is "News" and the editor agreed for some reason. When you think that this is their full-time job, it's what they do, it's how they earn their bread then you have to be slightly frustrated that they can't raise the bar a bit. In the last devblog (a while ago now) when when Dean said there was no release date, that made it into several stories and was quoted by a couple of big YTers as "DayZ release date pushed back to September!" meaning they once again completly managed to miss-inform their viewers. Jesus Christ. The more I type about them the angrier I get. How hard it it to just type facts into your keyboards ffs. -

Sure everyone likes different things, but designing a game involves deciding at some point what has a place in that game and what doesn't. I like tanks and Ferrairi's too, should those be in the game? No of course not because they have no place being there. -

Well there is no release date so it's just pure speculation in their part. If I had to guess at all I'd say they may be right, but then I'd make sure to communicate to people reading my words that I was guessing, unlike the shower that pass themselves of as games journalists these days. -

Yeh, it is tricky though. People said the same thing about Dean in the past a few times because he was fumbling around with the controls a bit. TBH it's just a bit of a nightmare trying to get used to it because the build literally changes every day. The crafting is especially tricky because it's literally never the same when you login in. It's something that get's tweaked/updated every day pretty much so you never really have time to learn your way around the menu's etc. Apart from the basic character movement everything else feels really different to the mod/Arma2 etc so it's just hard to adjust. Anyhoo, as SmashT said Matt just makes the tea so he did pretty well I reckon ;) -

To bring it back on topic slightly :) when the last blog/footage was released lots of people were pretty critical of the player movement/animations. I don't think they've changed a lot since then but this time around peeps don't seem to be half as critical about it. I wonder if people are just getting used to them or if their expectations have been lowered? There's definately loads of room for improvement but maybe peeps have finally got used to the fact it's never going to look like GTA? -

I guess it can be tricky showing features that are constantly changing/are very new when you know thousands of people are looking at you. That's what I'd assume anyway, he seems to know the game inside-out during testing. -

But they are :/ If you go and look at any game in pre-alpha it's not pretty, the thing is though publishers don't usually show any footage/gameplay from this early stage. That's because people get confused and fail to understand that it will be improved upon. After the E3 footage, everyone's toys got thrown out of the their prams "Hurr durr, this game broken man!7 months wait for this shit!". Now people can see that it's starting to come together, too slowly for some but it's getting their regardless. Did people honestly look at the E3 stuff and think that was it? Do you look at this footage and think that's it? No, of course it isn't. Everything is a work in progress, use your imagination a bit. -

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
@ Teo - You could argue that for every single thing in DayZ though. "Just let the admins decide!".... "Choice is key!"... I couldn't disagree more. This is probably the last thing I'll post on the matter because I'm just repeating myself now but... Decisions that are key to the very core experience of DayZ need to be taken away from the admins. The last year has shown that given the choice, players will generally choose the path of least resistance. By far the most popular public servers for a while had stupid starting loadouts, rediculous amounts of vehicles, pay to win elements and anything else that could be added to basically make the game "easier". Many of these players haven't even had the chance to play DayZ in the spirit it was intended. That's not their fault, it's a result of admins having too much choice and not really caring for the game, just wanting full servers to boost their ego's and wallets. Edit - Well Dsi1 ninja'd me with almost exactly the same point, it's good to know I'm not going mental , great minds think alike B) -

Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's got nothing to do with "nit-picking" or being a recent scape-goat. It's just about a pure design decision for the game. It's something that's been discussed for as long as DayZ has been a thing. It's been discussed a bit more recently because the SA is drawing near and it's now that people need to make their feelings known about these types of things so that the devs have the maximum amount of feedback to base certain decisions on. That's why Demon made this thread. -
