Cool so we're all agreed then. Competition is always good, it makes people work harder. Pissing all over somebody elses work whilst claiming it as your own and breaking the law or trying to make money out of it = bad.
-
Lol, someone did start making one but sadly it just dissappeared I think. That's what I mean though, I just want to see some fresh ideas.
-
I'd very carefully speculate that there's things some mods accomplish by actually changing (hacking) files in a way that the devs of the official mod simply can't because they play by the rules (and the law). Of course some go even further (Hi Origins XXX) and use other peoples work without crediting them and to rub salt in the wound they then try to make money out of it. Of course it makes no difference to you the end-user depending on your moral compass of course, just thought I'd mention it. Anyhoo, this topic was regarding the the Division DayZero being serious competition for the SA, my personal opinion is that I don't think it stands a chance for the reasons I mentioned earlier, it's obviously providing good competition for the official mod though and that can only be good for everyone.

Why does it have to be a DayZ mod at all? As I said, I want to see the SURVIVAL genre pushed and experimented with. In Dayz the zeds could be anything tbh, aliiens, rabid animals, patients that have escaped from the local asylum... it really doesn't matter because DayZ at it's core is a survival game. That's how it was developed, the actual zombie element was almost an afterthought. DayZ has shown that there is a desire for hardcore survival games. The Zed element isn't the original bit, they're just a convenient antagonist. It's the survival and social tension bit that's new and should be pushed. Like I said, I want to see the modders use their imaginations a bit. Some are though and there's some good mods on the way so it's all good.
-
I wasn't trying to speak ill of the modders, some of my friends work on these mods and spend hundreds of hours of their own time doing so for free. I have more respect for them than most. They're the first to admit though that all they're really doing is tinkering with somebody elses idea. I do think they're running out of ideas a bit, at least some are. When I see yet another "Zombie survival" mod my heart does sink a bit. I want to see them try new things with the whole survival genre, droppin zeds into it every time just seems a bit lacking in the imagination department. As long as they keep doing that I'll keep calling them DayZ spin-offs. DayZ became popular because it was the first Arma2 mod of it's kind (not the first zombie mod though), it was/is an original idea and the SA is the realisation of that idea. Everything else is just riding on it's coat-tails.
-
I'd describe the mod as a proof of concept and the SA as a realisation of that concept. All of the mods are still just playing around with the concept, and within the very strict restrictions that modding entails, the SA isn't bound by those restrictions because it's not tied to a base game in the way the mods are. So no: The mods will always be recylcling the same idea over and over whilst the SA is actually improving the core gameplay as well as bringing a shed load of new content.
-
I just personally feel like the mod and spin-offs have been done to death now. The only way it can be revitalised is by bringing something new to the table, not just some new models etc but something actually new in terms of gameplay. It's the actual gameplay that made DayZ what it is and all the modders can really do with that is tweak it etc. Porting to a new engine doesn't add anything new to the gameplay, it'll pretty things up but after a couple of hours you'll realise you're still playing the same thing. The future mods that get me excited are things like 2017 etc (and many others on the horizon) because at least they're trying something new and using their imaginations. I honestly can't wait to see what the next year brings in terms of modding now that Arma 3 is out but as far as DayZ spin-offs go I've had my fill tbh. Basiacally, I want something new now, not just somebody elses re-hashed ideas.
-
This I'd have to agree with. I've heard awesome thing's about DayZ Zero and I'll be giving it a go when I get time but there's no escaping the fact that ALL of the DayZ spin-off mods are scraping the barrel a bit when it comes to actual new content/ideas. There's lot's of variations on the same theme but really, nothing new. Kudos to all the modders for keeping DayZ alive well past the mods sell by date but due to the nature of modding they'll keep running into the same brick walls in terms of actually bringing something new to the game. If you like how DayZero takes you back in time a bit to the early days then I think your gonna like the SA even more.
-
As far as the mod is concerned choice is good, it's what's kept it alive although the side effect of that is a fragmented playerbase, half of which have no clue what DayZ is even about as a concept/game any more. Still, that's the nature of modding and long may it continue. For the SA though, I propose 2 options and 2 options only: Play or don't play.

Haha, next week: KOS becomes a hero... It's ok KOS, just evolution of a DayZ player, best to just lie back and take it like a man.
-
I think it's been suggested a few times before but not for a while. This one's well thought out though =) And your first post too! Welcome to the forums, good to see another Londoner on-board.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeh but they're just saying what they think, that's exactly what forums are for :/ Doesn't mean it's gonna happen. If that was the case I'dve quit the forums last year when every other suggestion was "how can we make a gameplay mechanic to stop KOS?". Luckily the devs have a very clear idea of what type of game it is they're trying to make, so whilst they read the forums and listen to peoples views, it doesn't mean they're gonna make a game by commitee. If you think that's the case then you've forgotten what Dean was like when he was running the mod. He spent half the time telling people he hated their ideas and the other half trying to explain that the game he wants to make isn't the sort of game we'll have seen before. If you're worried that his single-mindedness or motivations have changed now that money is involved then I can guarantee you that you're under-estimating him. Of course though, for many peeps only time will tell and that's fair enough. -
Pink fluffy ones? Deal.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's not getting removed and it never will be so I'm not really sure why the peeps that like it are getting their knickers in a twist tbh. Al they've said is that they're going to look at it. That's it. They're not stupid, if it's going to fuck the game up they'll just leave it alone and the SA will be exactly as it is now. Rocket, the lead dev loves using 3rd person view, you should be happy about that. Chances are there is no elegant way of doing it, in which case it'll just be left alone. Of course I'd like to see them try it but I don't want them to break the game in the process. Anyhoo, one thing we can agree on at least is about the admin thing <3 -
I loved it! I subscribed too. You're really talented. Your animation style reminds me of the cartoons I was brought up on. That's a good thing .
-
I just read through almost every one, one after the other. Keep up the good work =)
-
Cheers peeps! I might have time to get a new one up today, the pub is calling me though and that ice-cold beer isn't gonna drink itself...
-
Oh well since you asked: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/146730-dayz-allstars-comic/ I've only made two, just to see what happens tbh, it's good fun making them though and a shed load quicker than animating. I only started yesterday so be nice... Oh, and when do we get to see your "Sex Hair" animation?
-
Well if you get bored you could always read my comic..... I'm making a new one as we speak....

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Cool. I'm the same tbh, I do however think it's worth a small amount of their time to see if they can refine the 3rd person cam though. My reason for this (apart from thinking it's currently flawed) is that I don't want the community segregated as it has been over the last year. I want everyone playing the same DayZ and enjoying the same experience. I know it's unlikely, that's just what I'd like to see. I don't want admins to have ANY choice about the "style" of DayZ they choose to put on their server. They host a server and that's it. If they break the rules they get blacklisted , adios. Regarding the business side of things, we'll just have to agree to disagree =) -
Wired: How a near-death experience inspired a blockbuster zombie game

I guess that's where the "social experiment" part comes in. -
First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Good business decisions are much more complicated than simple maths, if that's all it boiled down to we could all just get out our calculators and get rich. And lol at you keep wanting the thread locked. Also, we haven't created any polls, other members have, if not my fault if you don't like them. We could use censorship I guess and lock it all down. I'm starting to think you studied at the Sergey Titov school of business practice. Anyway wtf :/ I haven't even argued to have third person cam removed, I even said that'd be a stupid idea... -
Phew! I thought you were gonna merge me. Cheers Bones, I promise to behave from now on.

Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes, technically he is an employee but I'd argue that at this point due to DayZ's success it's a fairly symbiotic relationship. Anyhoo, I didn't want to go too far off topic, it just infuriates me when people start talking about the business side of things when to be blunt they haven't got a clue what they're talking about. -
