September Round-up: DevBlog, #DayZDaily, PAX, GDC China
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Prisons have been talked about both here and on Reddit for over a year, including by Rocket. -
"Well so much for taking on Ideas from the Forums in DAYZ Suggestions, from his comments he didn't even read this Thread." "The Prison will be on it's own Island and look like an old Chateu type Building, pretty much what Gregor proposed not a few Posts above this one." Oh rly.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Crosshairs, nameplates, mapmarkers... the list goes on. None of these things were design decisions added to improve DayZ. They are all literally a result of it being a mod of Arma. Now they're making the game how they want so things like a flawed 3rd person cam should also be looked at. It'd be silly not to. Just to repeat: I want the 3rd person cam to stay, I also want it to be fixed. As I said earlier in the thread, it may not be possible but not even looking at it would be stupid. -
First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Or just fix the glaring issues with third person view then we can all play together and enjoy the same game. =) (btw, not one person has yet explained why the issues I raised with the third person cam earlier in the thread are acceptable or in anyway good for the game.) I accepted a long time ago that 3rd person cam is here to stay and haven't once said my preferred way of playing is superior to anybody elses. I have highlighted an issue though (an issue that the devs accept needs addressing) and haven't read one satisfactory reply as to why it shouldn't at least be looked at. I haven't bothered posting on this thread for a while because it's just descended into "YOU SUCK!". - "NO YOU SUCK!" which isn't very exciting. Some people have said "but it'll break the game QQ". Well in that case it won't have worked and we can carry on as we have it now. Being scared that it won't work is not a valid excuse for not at least letting them try. -
Fix the Dang Zombie Damage and AI already
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to Mikeloeven (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
OP - Please understand that what you are playing is a free mod of a 4-5 year old game. With that comes many limitations. The community developers of this free mod work hard in their precious spare time (FOR FREE) so that we can play it and have fun (for free). Of course there's many aspects that can be improved and that is what they are constantly working towards, within the many limitations imposed on them by virtue of the fact that this is a mod tied to a base game which is a niche military simulator that was never intended to have zombies in it. -
Can't play arma 2 pmc, etc anymore
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to kilo37's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Launch Arma - got to expansions in the main menu - enable/disable whatever it is you want to play. Disabling DayZ will give you back Arma. -
First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You're missing one important point though. Arma is a game based around sub-communities (ShackTac for example). That is Arma's strength. A small community can set up the game how they like to play and off they go. DayZ's strength will lie in the fact that it is a global community, all playing in the same world, all able to trade, meet and so on across multiple servers, countries and time-zones. As soon as you start to split that community up you weaken it and the premise of the game as we've seen with the private hives over the last year. Comparing the 2 games is pointless, they're just too different. That's why I'd like to see the devs basically dictate one standardised experience. Even if it means I have to compromise what I'd ideally like to see, which I already have. It's for the better of the game in the long-run. -

How do people make DayZ wallpapers? The artsy-looking ones.
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to RoyBloggins's topic in DayZ Mod Gallery
It's a combo of photo/image manipulation mixed with hand-drawn images using a tablet in PS. The things you can do in PS are only really limited by your imagination and/or talent tbh. @Taco, those pics are awesome =) -

A combo of Photoshop skills and talent. The above pic was originally a poster from something not DayZ related and then the artist (I forget his name but he's a member here) has manipulated the image and added some of his own art to it to give the impresssion that it's a scene from DayZ. -
When he needs inspiration he just needs to look over his shoulder. The truth is it was meant to have darts sticking out of it but I forgot to add them :/

DayZ Standalone Discussion
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to griffinz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No. See what you've done there is looked at one thing that the devs chose to focus on in a devblog and assumed that's what the entire SA is all about. The actual survival element will be the core of the SA. You will be pleasantly surprised if all you're expecting is some new guns with attachments. Please remember that in these demonstrations, they are not showing you the whole game each time. They usually focus on one thing to show what they're currently working on. -
That's the fun part, good luck.
-
what have I done. Now peeps are just beaning me and taking them back. I logged on to see 17 lovely cans donated to my cause but they've all been taken back. Damn you all.
-
*Arma is how it's spelled. You might wanna get that right if you're basing a whole channel around it =)

Urghghgh, ok last word on the matter: I was referring to when he was developing the mod, not the SA They are the rules of modding. When you are modding somebody elses game/content/assets there are certain things you are not allowed (legally) to touch, Dean and the official mod devs respect those rules, many others don't. I've gone over all of this already. Now he is making the SA he has access to everything and can change anything he likes at a core level to suit DayZ, with modding you can't do that. Until you understand the fundamental difference between modding (and the legal responsibilities that go with that) and developing an actual game with full licensing rights you will remain confused. Adios, much love.
-
Anyhoo, to bring this back on topic - The proposition was that DayZ will be good competition for the SA. I think it's good competition for the official mod but when it comes to the SA it doesn't have a chance. That's not a slight against the DayZero devs, they just won't be able to keep up. What you've seen of the SA so far is just the tip of the Iceberg. And @Jackal - you said that you like the survival elements of DayZ and like how DayZero has gone back to the roots of DayZ a bit, if that's the case then I honestly think you're in for a treat with the SA =) Anyhoo, that's me done with this thread - I've made my points, take them or leave them, it's all good and just my personal opinion.
-
That's because in modding there's certain files that legally you aren't allowed to alter. Dean and the official mod devs play by the rules so comparing their talents to people that don't is simply unfair. I know you don't care about that but nevertheless it's important that you understand why some mods can make changes that the official mod devs (and Dean before them) can't. And stop all of this "wahhh" dean dropped the mod bollocks. He kept the mod running for free for longer than most mod devs do and he is now turning that into an actual game to fulfil it's potential. Let's remember, these mod-mods you're playing are based on DayZ. The thing that still makes the gameplay unique is Deans work itself and the engine provided for that was designed and funded in-house by BIS themselves. Before DayZ came along there was nothing else like it so to keep saying "BIS don't care" when they're the ones giving Dean the creative freedom and financial backing to realise the games potential is rubbish. I'm not saying some mods haven't improved on it in certain areas, of course they have, that's what modding is all about and that is it's strength but lets not forget what brought us all here to start with.
-
Please elaborate.
-
Yes we would because that's exactly what modding is. Somebody develops an idea, somebody else mods/tweaks/enhances that idea. That's the very core of modding and what drives it forward. Locking down files stops that in it's tracks. I really do think there's some people here that don't fundamentally understand what modding is and how long it's been going on for. For free.

Dayz convention (Own or Know a good pub?)
Fraggle (DayZ) replied to strideynet's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'd go too. I've never even been to any of these games conferences (E3 etc) so I'd love to go to something that just lets me geek out for a day. I vote for just picking a pub too, if it grows from there then we can just hire out a massive conference centre and make it official. Not sure about the missus cooking breakfast though, we'd have to eat beans on toast (in honour of DayZ) and she's Swedish so I think think the whole "beans on toast" thing would probably turn her stomach. You can all crash on my floor anytime though. Hopefully though we'd still be drunk from the night before so it wouldn't matter anyway. -
That's exactly what community modding is. The irony of that one sentence alone is mind-blowing. Imagine if Dean had taken that approach with DayZ, you wouldn't have any choice and the DayZ mod wouldn't have any competition. Earlier in this thread you agreed competition is a good thing.
-
I think you're misunderstanding the whole concept of what community modding is if I'm honest. People have been modding Arma for over a decade. There's hundreds of mods and a shed load of resources provided by BIS to to so. At the risk of repeating myself, modding is a hobby. People make these mods using assets that have been made (for free) by other community members and using (for free) the resources provided by BIS. The peeps that make some of these mods have probably made less than 1 -2% of the actual content it is that they're now "selling". Until you grasp that it is not theirs to profit from you will never understand why some people are so infuriated by it. I'm genuinely proud to be part of the DayZ community but as a long-term member of the BIS community I'm saddened and depressed to see the way things are now going. P.S - You "not caring" about certain issues does not make it any less of an issue.
