Remember when one bullet killed you?

Besides the time to kill changing in game, it also sounds like you've become jaded and have wrung the experience dry for yourself on some level. Though "humans are the ultimate x factor", you've likely seen most firefight scenarios and most ways people engage in combat many times over. You've whipped that dead horse countless times and now.... https://youtu.be/oica5jG7FpU Meh.

The most glorious means of transportation

I usually do Bonesy but as Claws4life said this guy is almost 100% pure trolling.

The Zombie Hunters: DayZ's least acknowledged play style.

Flinching mechanics and blocking/parrying (all tied to physics) would be enough for me. I'm not really interested in seeing combos personally. I hope everything you talked about and a lot more neither us know about is being tested in some way for DayZ melee mechanics. Also, back a little closer to my OP, a melee soft skill would only be a small damage bonus (15-20%) versus infected and would not affect PvP melee characteristics. Kill 200 infected with melee attacks = first tier bonus 500 = 2nd tier bonus 1,000 = maximum bonus Honestly, I'm not crazy about the whole soft skill thing altogether and wouldn't mind if our characters never changed besides appearance.

The most glorious means of transportation

Because people really are as ignorant as the OP and if 1 person decides to use the search function before posting, it was worth it. :)

The Zombie Hunters: DayZ's least acknowledged play style.

Much of this is well thought out but still is conjecture. We shouldn't make any assumptions right now without seeing what is being worked on. I am hoping for some basic blocking or parrying and I disagree that longer wind-up time needs to be added in necessarily. Once you become accustomed to timing and movements you'll be able to judge when someone is sprinting at you to swing and the impact that follows. Also the time between swings can be significant enough that a single missed swing can be the difference between living or dying. Finally, Bohemia is known for lag problems but I trust the devs when they say all is possible in a smooth environment. I'm not going to cry "the sky is falling" RE: infected until probably some time in Beta, which is when I expect most infected issues to be well ironed out.

The most glorious means of transportation

This has been suggested many times. Please use the search function before creating new topics. Edit: The discussions here are 3+ years old.... You should also go read up on the game and who is working on it. Rocket is no longer involved.

The Zombie Hunters: DayZ's least acknowledged play style.

Much of what you posted is assuming that the infected will resemble anything we have seen so far. I am willing to bet that the infected AI and Horde mechanics in the future may present the challenge you are interested in. You should also be aware that we will be getting a new animation system for characters which should improve melee as well.

The Zombie Hunters: DayZ's least acknowledged play style.

I'm not 100% sure I follow everything you posted but I guess I would respond by saying I encourage a variety of play styles and enjoy hearing of others who try to play in varying styles but certain ways of playing do not appeal to me and I would likely need many many many hours of play time before I tried playing certain ways.

The Zombie Hunters: DayZ's least acknowledged play style.

I've never had to KoS to avoid the squeaking trolls but I'm sure the way I played helped avoid them altogether more than anything. Those players gravitate to areas of the map I usually avoid. Even if I just get shot at, if I see someone first, I would rather reach out to them from a safe vantage point than immediately engage them with firearms. I don't often look to team up, but I do enjoy the random trade or helping the less fortunate with food or gear.

    So everyone is right handed?

Being left handed forces a person to learn dynamic problem solving at an early age. Something as mundane as a doorknob can present a challenge. I have played quite a few games where lefty was an option but it seems less and less these days. I used to get powder burns on my arm while shooting my friends .22 rifle left handed.... I want to emphasize the difference for melee. I move differently due to being left handed and it can be an advantage in a 3D environment. This may even be a contributing factor for my ability to out maneuver people or choose unusual paths across the map. Many right handed people will interpret the environment similarly and cut similar paths where lefties being a minority (and probably being more adaptable) see things a little differently and do not trace the same paths. When it come to keyboard/mouse games all I ever really want is the ability to map custom key bindings. I have written off some games because I couldn't bind WASD to UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT buttons....

    Update download notes for Experimental

    0. There are no official changelogs for experimental and most likely never will be. 1. Bug fixing for desynch is/was/and always will be a work in progress as new game elements are introduced. 2. The infected will return once bugs are squashed in the current builds and their AI server load has been reduced. If you were actually someone who followed DayZ dev closely, you would understand why this thread is a pointless waste. Please go to the "Dev Tracker" section of the forum and read for more detail on everything in your OP.

With characters growing beards and weathering in appearance, can we expect some form of 1,000 yard stare expression as well? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand-yard_stare

    The Psychology of Understanding Alpha

You left out one crucial point in the OP. That just the way DayZ is being built probably causes the SA to have more bugs than the average. We are swapping ALL the core components on to new tech. This is something most studios wouldn't normally try internally let alone in an open alpha.

    Hicks = Zombie or Player?

Wow, junkie Matt Lightfoot is the stuff of nightmares. Has anyone put Lightfoot in the frilly dress yet? He needs it.
  20. I thought you might want to make a correction somewhere, for the record. You definitely do well to keep your cool with all the crazy situations you bring upon yourself. You make your own "hard mode" which is very entertaining to watch, and I've learned a bunch from it too.

I KOS'd and i felt horrible for it.

And the "hot potato of grief" is passed once more.... But it sounds like you project a bit of yourself into the game, and have a semblance of conscience, and want to play a game that doesn't just include shooting at someone else after all. The more you hold onto those notions, the more you leave yourself open to a diverse experience.

    Status Report - 18 Aug 2015

Thanks, devs/all! Great work and overview of the CLE, it sounds like it's pretty well dialed in control wise already too. Maybe in future development work will be ahead of schedule and there will be a breaking point in the bugs once core tech is fully updated. Either way I'm optimistic for the outcome. :beans:
