Deriding people for trying to contribute to your thread is not constructive. Your original post made a point that the sun is shining and a couple of us had an equally valid point as well. Bright and sunny does not a warm day make. Authenticity can be achieved through a balance of a few core principles (not over complicated, like Milkman said) which will likely never satisfy your expectations for the system. I'm not a mountain climber (though I've done some more casual climbs in my youth) but I am an endurance cyclist (100+ mile rides), I ride in all weather, and have done solo self sustained cycle touring in my state with food and shelter carried on my back. Recently I climbed Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire on a 30+ pound rented hybrid bike reaching the summit in well under an hour (from the base) on their hottest most humid day this year. Yeah, I do some shit too but I don't shove it down anybodies throat. One of the most important pieces of advice I came across in researching cold weather activity is layering. "Dress like an onion." This makes altering your gear for conditions easier and allows for wicking of sweat away from the body, given you layer correctly. With that in mind, in-game we should be able to wear, t-shirt + hoodie + jacket/coat, for added insulation. (*We should not be able to use most pockets in our under layers.) (Not to derail but your avatar begs the question.... have you see the most recent Survivorman? I like (used to like I guess) Les, but after "Survivorman and Son" (where he basically acted like a terrible father/survival partner) and searching for Bigfoot (with full on camping gear), I will never respect him the same. Edit to say: Ed Stafford is probably my current favorite survival "expert" on TV.)

I've never once seen hypothermia and have never needed to build a fire for warmth. Yes, the new spawn should be freezing his nuts off. A "bright sunny day" can be brutally cold. Clothed in full modern winter gear, I have done some mountain climbing on the brightest sunniest of days and could still feel the cold seeping through the very fabric of the clothes. There are plenty of places in this world where you can freeze to death in direct bright sunlight.....

I would like to reiterate that walking OVER water gets you soaked through instantly. This has happened to me on docks and on the shipwreck.

I am all for infected animals though I'm not sure it's something the dev team wants in the game. Small tweaks in behavior are already being implemented and will likely be more sophisticated in the final build. As stated by the devs, those things that totally defy conventional physical properties (exploding, or giant zeds etc), will not be in this game.

Odin Lowe and I both pointed this out already earlier in the thread.

Rodsin I'm 100% sure zombies will never exist. Authenticity and realism are 2 very different concepts in the realm of games and has been a distinction posited by Rocket early on. To just say "zombies remove realism to begin with so we can do whatever", is very short sighted. I believe the concept of authenticity in regards to DayZ is a factor to help keep immersion and suspension of disbelief. Having limitations associated with being human like body temperature and disease are direct examples of this. The way I believe the zeds will act in their final form will be very animal/ape like movement and behavior never extending their abilities too far beyond what a normal human could do. Video games will likely never be "realistic" in my lifetime but a level of authenticity in the graphics and player interactions can make the experience more visceral and immersive.

He makes a valid point though. I would like to cite the countless movies that depict FAR FAR worse things then shooting a child and none of them are banned anywhere (in the western world). Early conversations regarding child/baby zombies were that the team weren't opposed to the idea EXCEPT for the fact that it might get the game banned in some regions. Only because of the old stigma of video games being mostly for children is there any difference on how games are rated and where they are released. Also, any thread RE: zombies in DayZ is invariably going to hit on ALL of these side topics. We should NOT see super human zombies of any sort! No giants, no disfigured mutants, no special abilities, spider/lizard/animal zombies, or exploding zombies. This conflicts with the entire authenticity factor that is a core element of what makes DayZ unique. If you want to see weird mutant zombies, play Resident Evil, it's great for that.

It seems the devs are way ahead of you there, with the invisible zed bug introduced a few patches back....

No stamina "bar" will ever likely be shown. No freaking stagger or tripping! That's for the idiots in the movies that I scream at. I'm playing a game so I can use my SKILLS to get away. A random stumble/trip factor would be horrible (as it was in Smash Bros Brawl). If zombies could be stealthier then slower zombies are viable and YES I think zombies should be able to grab you or pin you down but I believe a very simple quicktime mechanic could be made to defend against this if you have a knife or similar weapon or possibly barehanded with a kick (similar to the defensive knife move in Resident Evil).

You should find a game built for PvP that your laptop can handle and you'll never have to worry again. Problem solved!

Due to the word "zombie" being partially under debate here I began my examples from where the name began and as pointed out in my post, not to be considered truly "undead" (as I had hoped I had indicated by prefacing with the idea of drugs/magic being involved and the use of quotes around the word undead). I think the main difference between the early cultural types of undead are their capacity for independent conscious thought and action. Many of these entities were held responsible for deliberate sophisticated actions against the living (not limited to eating their brains). The creatures we associate with zombie are automatons, hence the use of the word to describe a feeling of thoughtlessness, numbness, or general lack of awareness.

Here's the breakdown, no interwebs needed, kids! First (historically), there were "voodoo zombies", using magic and/or drugs a shaman controls the "undead" using it's "soul" as the UI. Slow, mindless, but strong and unflinching. (Carpenter: The Serpent and the Rainbow 1988) Second, good ol' Georgey Romero comes along and says, "meteor radiation" can raise the dead. Mostly slow, mostly mindless, truly rotted corpses, first advent of head shot needed to kill. (Night of the Living Dead 1966) Thirdly, 70-80's exploitation horror movies depict "toxic government waste" as a possible reanimator of corpses with a taste for "brains". Slow, fast, amputated, coming in all shapes, and sizes, these zombies are often what most people think of when they think "zombie". (____ of the Living Dead, 70-80's) Lastly, our modern "rage zombies" popularized by movies like 28 Days Later, are mindless violent flesh ripping fiends who have contracted a "disease/virus" that has turned them into such. These zombies are mostly fast and animal like in their movements. ALL of the last 3 types have been depicted with the ability to infect people they have wounded in most cases.
-
1966 And yes, they are indeed "infected" or "rage zombies" who are not "undead" but more like mutant beastial humanoids that still exhibit regular body functions but have no real consciousness as we know it.

First thing I thought with combination of model and wording in the tweet.... All due respect to Hetstaine ....

This hotfix seems to have solved server DC for me so far. I joined a New York server and experienced one really bad bout of desynch where I thought I was outside evading a zombie but I was still stuck in a green piano building getting hit by a zed. Other than that, fighting 3 and 4 zombies at a time with my fire axe wasn't a problem. I ran past a seemingly random zed that was just standing in the wilderness, scared the crap outta me but it never aggro'd even though I passed it very close. So far, so good! Thank you, devs!

The War on Wilderness - Reclaiming Myshkino
☣BioHaze☣ replied to Katana67's topic in General Discussion
I feel like I am never in danger of getting lost in the wilderness anymore and I feel like tents and vehicles will be even harder to hide as the wilderness shrinks. I do agree with you on most of your points but here is a possible 2nd point of view: Personally, I try to remind myself that this game is working towards an entirely different set of rules and balances and some changes may shift things one way or another before it's complete. Eventually, if loot in general is much much more rare (central loot economy), and high pop servers tend to have 75+ players at a time, and raw survival becomes more difficult, maybe having more military locations and less wilderness will work out...? -
^It's called "thunderdome" and people have been doing it since the mod.
-
Did you try to log out and join a different server? If so, try going back to the server you were on before you lost the character. I know that a respawn bug from the last build was easily remedied by quickly logging out and back in as well. Hope that helps a little if it happens again...

Normally I would agree 100% but I'm seeing all of my lowest ping/more popular East coast servers having DC issues after about 15 minutes (similar to Experimental). If I play on servers between say 50-75 ping I get the best balance of performance. I believe server DC issues may be tied to persistence (hicks said this?), and it seems that due to load + overall usage if the server is high traffic it brings out the bug to it's fullest. This is total conjecture on my part and I could be way off but I can only speak from my personal experiences regarding servers and this update. I just played on a 60 ping server with rain for over an hour with good synch, door states, and zombie interactions, and decent frame rates.
-
It's reported in known issues for this update. When you quick press LMB you go from the item in hand to a different item in the hot bar. I would be swinging with my melee weapon and it would switch to the compass. :(
-
What are you doing to avoid the hot bar glitch (Is it only slot 3)? I am currently only keeping my melee weapon in the hot bar to avoid it. Or are you just making sure you don't panic and spam the button? :P
-
What are peoples thoughts/feelings on "ruined" clothing? I haven't had a chance to test it out thoroughly yet myself but does anyone know what the differences ruined and all other states is currently? Is the level of melee protection they offer the only thing effected currently or are heat and water repellant properties changed as well? I think the down jacket I had on wasn't keeping me as warm but it's difficult to verify. Does a ruined raincoat still repel water...?

Servers have the option to enable persistence currently and it is up to each admin whether it is on or not. Look in server titles for terms like "Persistence Enabled".

Found a police car spawn and like another posted earlier it was buried. http://i.imgur.com/f3G78je.jpg
