    We look for the standalone?

Aporis has no clue what he is talking about. That being said, just wait.

Will hackers really be subdued in SA? Not likely.

This is from January. In it Dean clearly describes the main differences between the new server client architecture. Consider this. Ballistics in Arma 2 are calculated by each client individually, and then resolved. Now, the server calculates all bullet trajectories. This means the only way to make a bullet go through walls is to literally hack the server. Same goes for running any scripts, creating items, ect. The server dictates all variables based on player input, so it is now the umpire. Even rocket admits that it probably won't stop people from hacking in some minor ways, but cows from the sky, teleportation, boxes full of equipment randomly appearing and the mass hack attacks should finally be a thing of the past. These are the debilitating hacks which ruin the game outright, and they are still there. "Memory hacking" means basically fuck all when the server is constantly logging and dictating your health, location, inventory, and ballistics. It also makes catching cheaters much easier, which means they can be removed quickly by admins before they start to create mass chaos, as they generally do.

You don't know what you're even talking about Ozelot. They are rewriting the engine to specifically prevent client side script injection, which is the major cause of all hacking. Of course you can't fully prevent hacking, but at the very least it can be minimized to a playable level. The other half of it is keeping a vigilant, updated system which will catch successful hackers and ban them. But with the new server/client architecture, script injection will basically be impossible. The server is in control of all scripts.

SA: Suggestion for terrain side effects

He was probably following orders. I'm assuming they were moving towards an objective when they were attacked.

SA: Suggestion for terrain side effects

Yes. I was thinking about this as I walked up the hill to my car the other day after class. Even a mild incline over a long enough distance can be exhausting, especially when you are carrying a pack full of stuff. I think it would make people think more about they way they move around in the environment. Take the sniper hill above the power plant in Elektro for example. you can just run basically straight up that almost vertical hillside with no difficulty, when in reality, you'd have to plot out your path like - "well I can't climb straight up there, It would probably be better to just go around to the other side where it's shallow." Also it would mean getting caught on the side of a hill would be a seriously dire situation. I don't know if anyone saw this video the last time I posted it, but it's one of my favorites. Notice how once the soldier is making his decent and being fired upon, he doesn't go back up the hill. Why is that? Well, quite simply, he's carrying nearly 100 pounds of gear. He even tries to double back for a second, which is the first time he takes a hit. Going back up that hill would make him a sitting duck for the shooter who is trying to zero in on him, so he has to continue moving with the direction of the terrain to avoid gunfire.

    [SA] How To Fix Clothing

Yeah, it's a good idea. They could create multiple textures or material states which could reflect your repairs on the clothing item, that would be nice. Also you should be able to use duct tape, cloth, thread, and needles could all be used to repair clothes or equipment. He knows that items can get damaged, leviski. He's suggesting ways that players could repair damaged items.

    DayZ Early Access on SteamDB.info?

gummy, you're quite the fool if you think I actually expect all that stuff right away, if ever. I'm describing some ideal gameplay mechanics that the devs should shoot for. There's no reason to shoot down future goals just because you think you know everything about game development and BI, which apparently you don't. DayZ made Bi booku bucks on sales of Arma 2, not to mention all the sales revenue they just got from Arma 3. They have some development cash to go around. Just look at what they've done with the engine so far. The only reason they haven't attempted certain things is because they chose not to. They aren't just a bunch of fucking hobos sitting around in an abandoned warehouse with laptops they bought at goodwill like "OKAY GUYUZ LETS MAEK GAMEZ NOW LOLZ." They are going to continue developing the game. Rocket said himself, they aren't putting vehicles in until they've been done right. They've already discussed vehicles having batteries and other features. It's not impossible. Just because you think it is, doesn't make it true. They just need time to develop the game into the product it is aiming to be. This project is fundamentally a ground-up experiment. That being said, despite all it's flaws, it has a great core and actually the Vr engine can be quite flexible. If you think it's so limited, why don't you just look at armaholic. If this game was so utterly shit to begin with and it was impossible to make new features, then how could mods like Overwatch and Epoch exist, not to mention other great mods like A.C.E? The engine is quite flexible and I think perfectly capable, given time and a focused direction. The only reason vehicles in Arma aren't treated that way now is because they were not designed from the bottom up as a survival game.

    Degrading Backpacks: Stuff Falls Out

Um. I don't know... Its simply logic. You have to define what you are looking at. Only fighting each other is a competition. Being able to fight each other combined with a goal or some kind of common objective is what makes it a game. It's kind of a long vid just skip to 2:30 for the juicy bits.

    How do you get around?

I drive whatever I can find. Other than that, mostly I walk. I generally never bring a gas powered vehicle into town, I'll hide it a few klicks away and carefully hike in, infiltrate, loot, ect. If I'm in a shit spawn like Kamenka, I generally just run straight north. It's stupid to do anything else. The further north you go, the closer to the edge of the map you are, the more likely you are to find a nice little player hidden vehicle and live for more than 1 hour and 9 minutes. Come to think of it, you never seem to lose humanity from stealing. That's kind of interesting to me. I mean, I consider the laws they have up in Canada or Alaska and such that basically say it's legal to break into a shelter in a life or death situation, as often times a lonely hiker may find themselves in. I guess that's a pretty big rationalization for snatching every scrap of another man's worldly possessions, but eh. I'm only borrowing it, really. By the time I log back in, it will probably be gone. (Car keys? SA? Please don't release vehicles in the standalone without keys. Hot-wiring, acceptable if done right.) Anyway, every time I spawn I basically mad dash north to the treeline at the very least. Unless I'm in a town, in which case I'm like Sam Fisher until I find a gun. I guess I'm addressing your question more generally as "how I get around." I try to stay concealed at all times. Keep the high ground wherever it might be advantageous. Observe all possible sniping positions and scan carefully. Ect. When in doubt, go North. That's my motto. I usually make big loops and double back through woods to get to a destination. It's my way of checking my own six, and also sweeping the map for vehicles or tents. More often than not, I'll come across something to get me on my way.

    Degrading Backpacks: Stuff Falls Out

You guys are aware that gear degradation is happening in the SA, right? It's not like you can avoid it. The reason is to make supplies and gear a real, tangible commodity. It will seriously make you think twice about the pros and cons of wasting bullets on some unarmed noob. It wouldn't really get you any gain, and at the worst it might even be a loss as it will attract zombies and other armed players, which will not only threaten your life but your ever precious gear supply and equipment. I really think zombies should be able to damage your clothes and packs. It would make them an even more serious threat. Frustration is what makes a game a game. Without a challenge, or an objective, you're just playing with a toy. A game needs environmental challenges for you to play against. That's kind of the whole point...

    Degrading Backpacks: Stuff Falls Out

I love this idea. Also, there will be item degradation from shooting backpacks and clothing, which makes sense. You can't riddle a backpack full of holes and expect it to hold up. It would be nice if a moderately damaged or destroyed backpack would drop items which you could literally see on the ground. Of course you could pick them back up if you see it, but a lot of people might overlook it until they check their pockets again... Perhaps doing things like crouching or going prone, or standing up from prone, or vaulting, could slightly spike the chance of an item being lost, so if you know you have a pretty raggedy pack, you're going to think twice about jumping clear over that fence. It really wouldn't take a lot of time under serious conditions for a bag to degrade. Backpacks last for a while when they are taken care of. However, imagine you are in a situation where a: zombies are tearing at your clothes and pack all the time. (That should also effect your item condition, and chance of losing items, btw), b: you're probably stuffing the pack with way more than it can bear, as not every backpack is made equal. Some backpacks are very easy to break when they are just woven out of thin nylon with no supporting straps or a frame, for example. Anyone who has ever done serious primitive camping knows that not all backpacks are alike in terms of durability. c: you are probably being shot at or even attacked with melee weapons by other characters constantly. Also, you are walking literally everywhere you go, meaning total time you are applying stress to the straps is a lot more than in your modern, daily life. All of these factors clearly show that hard living will make things break more often. I'd also like to be able to repair clothes and packs with thread, duct tape, and the like. It would be nice if they could create visual adjustments for player repairs as well, maybe some little decals or a simple texture replacement on the item could reflect the player's general level of modification and repair.

    MEGA MOD

Mods have destroyed vanilla DayZ. Thank goodness they aren't allowing mod in the SA. I hope they never do. Every feature they implement in the SA should always be vanilla. Mods will inevitably split the community across private hives thus evaporating the scarcity of items, undermining global item economy, and generally just turning the game into a giant PvP "all weapons on spawn and instantly find a vehicle instantly" clusterfuck. No thanks.

    DayZ Early Access on SteamDB.info?

I'm not happy to see the absence of vehicles in the Alpha, but I understand why it's necessary. I want vehicle repairs to be more complex and in depth when they redo them. I'd love to see vehicles have real maintenance problems like dead batteries, bad starter motors, alternators, manifold gaskets, spark plugs or ignition coils, cracked hoses, bad belts, ect. On top of that it would be great to see fluid levels that are important to a car's function. You could pour water (or perhaps even urinate) into a radiator to keep an overheating car running. There could be an oil level which would go down very, very slowly, but over time would require replacement. Perhaps the presence of cracked hoses in a car could result in low power steering fluid or brake fluid. All of these parts and fluid levels would affect a vehicles overall performance dynamically. Cars could sometimes have manuals which would explain symptoms of a vehicle and common problems that could cause it. If they made the system nuanced and difficult enough, it could require some real skill to actually repair a car effectively. I'd also like to see a function similar to the "study Body" feature which would have to be used on the hood of a vehicle to examine it and find out what might be wrong with it, instead of just having that information given to you as soon as you get in. The vehicle hud should only give you things like fuel level, temperature, oil pressure, and engine warning lights.

    Make grass render further

Nobody's talking about 3d grass. Just forcing a common minimum render distance only for grass would be enough. However, if you are hiding in grass, you should be aware that it's not an invisibility cloak. Even in real life a ghillie suit would not hide you in short grass. I prefer to hide behind solid objects whenever possible.

DayZ Developer Blog 7th September 2013

That post is over a month old and games PC just pulls those quotes from old reddit posts. They don't reflect the official timeline. Surely we don't know exactly what kind of complexity they might be dealing with in terms of making that server architecture work properly. It's very likely they'll still be making improvements to the server/client com even after the Alpha release. My posted quote from rocket is much more recent. It clearly indicates that they are working 100% full steam ahead, which is a VERY good sign. It means the Alpha should be just around the corner. Check it. This is from today. https://twitter.com/Hicks_206/status/393461281950146560/photo/1 "High morale after our multiplayer internal test."
  23. If you look on the last page there is a video of this idea working as a mod for the current build of DayZ, so I don't think the engine is really relevant. This is totally possible, and it should be done in the standalone.

    Change the destroyed clothing textures.

This is just for anyone who hasn't seen it. Why would a shirt turn grey from being shot? I get it maybe for natural degradation, but please, I beg you, if a clothing item is on a player, and they get shot, the shirt should be bloody. It's obvious. That grey decal is hideous. Just being nitpicky. Otherwise, superb work.

    Current Trend

I guess I don't see the appeal in getting 120 stanag mags. Scarcity makes the game more interesting for me. I kind of like looking into my backpack and going "damn, I only have 3 mags and two of them are basically empty..." That's just the reality of the situation.
