Idea: Player earned abilities.
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to knawx's topic in General Discussion
Epoch is actually pretty fun, as long as you don't go on the OMGWTFBBQ 10000000+ Cars! servers. People can blow up your stuff, attack your base, ect. Zombies are a real threat. Nothing is really, truly, "safe" but it does feel nice to have a little barn or a stash or whatever lying in wait for you. It makes organizing actually meaningful, makes pvp more intense, and also the base building is enjoyable. If they would just exchange those stupid bricks of metal for ammunition currency like Metro, it would be an improvement in my opinion. Also having keys for cars is really cool, and it just kind of makes sense. What car have you seen in the real world that you can just get in and magically drive, anyway? Plus you can take parts off them, destroy them, and even hotwire them with the right tool, which is a fair approach. For what flaws Epoch does have, it makes up for them with a feeling of purposefulness. Even a squirrel knows you gotta save up food for emergencies. I don't see how that ruins the entire point of DayZ. As far as I was aware, DayZ basically has no point other than basic survival, which even in the Alpha, is still pretty easy once you get the hang of the mechanics. On topic, skills are not a good approach. Just learning to play the game is hard enough for a lot of people. The great equalizer of DayZ is personal knowledge. Skills will just tier the game into a higher form of deathmatch where ruthless bandits rule over shitty noobs who die a lot and can't manage to get their level up high enough to give them selves a bandage. (I'm sorry but that's an absolutely terrible idea. The day I see the message "I don't know how to tear up a shirt" is the day I quit this game.) -

You need the correct hand guard. It requires an RIS. -

I'd like a better server browser, and an out of game browser would be nice too. Specifically, I want the "History" list to be sort-able by last time joined. -

You need to keep strafing to avoid being hit. That is all. -
Base building questions

I don't think anyone has the answers you are looking for dude. You're talking about a feature that probably won't make it into the game until a year from now, if not longer. -
Security Vulnerabilities fixed by Patch #2 and Character wipe
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
We're all saying the same to you, Sergey. You admitted yourself that you haven't played the Standalone so... Go away? lol. Why do you waste your time here? Nothing better to do what with WarZ being a smashing success and all? -
Okay.... My character keeps wiping....
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to dcb (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
It's called an update dude. This happens in Alpha. It even says it in the main menu. It was said many times before release that this would happen. You were warned. -

Oh yeah I see that now. Have you tried just changing settings systematically to see what effect it has? -
Pending Update Rev. 0.29.113822
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
Can we look forward to some basic UI cleanup like being able to combine pills and only using 1 purification tablet for each use? Also, I had an idea that all containers (backpacks, clothes, boxes) which are not in your inventory should show up as closed by default, meaning to search through them you would have to deliberately open the item in the inventory menu. This way, you could also make it possible to double click items out of your inventory and into a selected container on the ground, rather than having to drag it. -

Try setting your video memory to "auto" like in the video I just linked. -
Help with a very strange graphics bug (video link)
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to PlutoniumB's topic in General Discussion
Graphics artifacts were a huge problem in the mod, back in 2012. I remember when everything from soldier corpse models, to humvees, to barbed wire seemed to cause it. I've also seen that FLUSH fix before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbgrZ0Hh6bU -

Actually, I disagree. It just needs some tweaking. Speak for yourself Lazy, you fucking dick. Lol. Sorry. Tired of that guy's nonsense. -

Are There Only 3 Guns On 1st Release?
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Yes indeed. Also, some asshat in Austin has been manufacturing 3d printed plastic lower receivers for m4's and releasing the plans publicly online. Reproducing any gun is actually quite simple, if you know the basics of fabrication. -
Needing a can opener to open a can is pathetic

Can openers aren't that hard to find. OP is pathetic. -
Are There Only 3 Guns On 1st Release?
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Colt, along with other American gun manufacturers, is one of the world's largest exporters of guns. In fact, guns are the main export of the United States. Thinking they just cease to exist in other countries is ignorance. Other nations buy weapons from us, so they are in fact used in other countries around the world. Apart from the Ak-47, the M4 and variants are the most popular small arm in the world. M4's also are easily sold to Cartels at gun shows near the Mexican border. Saying M4's aren't smuggled but Ak's are... just silly. Don't let national pride ruin your judgment. In fact, it's very common practice for the American military to leave behind thousands of rifles in old combat zones, because it's cheaper to just make more guns than to ship them back to the United States. Haven't you ever seen Scarface? -
A simple and effective fix for night time gamma "cheating"
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
No, it isn't. Have you ever been to the country? Without light pollution, the stars alone can be bright enough to cast a shadow. Overcast nights are pitch black, and they still are that way in the game. Especially indoors, gamma correction basically makes no difference. In a lot of buildings, items spawn in such a way that not even your vicinity menu will detect them. The only option to thoroughly search for loot is to use a light anyway. -

Most Memorable Moment Thus Far?
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to nwackes's topic in General Discussion
I don't think I'll ever forget the first time I spawned. I was in Prig. I managed to find a screwdriver but found it didn't work. As I left a house I saw a man running and after him were two guys with hatchets saying "Where do you think you're going?" and such. They looked at me but I immediately turned and ran North. I went through the apartments around Cherno, found some stuff, then made my approach to the city. I wanted ammo for my new Mosin. As I'm moving through the town I see an aggro zombie chasing a player, who goes into the fire station. I carefully made my way around and found a dead body behind the building. When I entered the building, a man with a hatchet came in after me and got a swing in, but I managed to side step his follow up attack and struck him multiple times in the back, killing him. At this point, my screen is blurry and I'm bleeding all over myself. Then another guy comes in and starts punching me while I am bandaging myself. I told him in direct chat to kindly fuck off, and ran for my life. My adventures continued for a long time after that. I made it all the way to the NWAF, got fully geared along the way, and overcame an illness. I even made it to the shipwreck on the east coast with the same character. Shortly thereafter I lost my character due to the patch. -
blood type is pretty stupid
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to nilloc93's topic in General Discussion
So long story short - if a guy is about to kill you, just scream out "I'm O negative!" No but really, if you think the odds are "impossible" of having compatible blood, then you clearly didn't bother to look up how blood compatibility works before posting. -
Guns too Over powered at moment !
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to dgeesio's topic in General Discussion
True, I think knockdown states are a quick fix to this. However, since this game is supposed to be about long term survival, I think it's inevitable that the damage model will need some serious revision. It would just be awesome to have a character that gets shot, manages to survive, and over the course of a few days actually makes a full recovery. Also, I really want surgery. So badly. I loved the medical system that Americas Army 3 used (despite some of it's flaws). I like the thought of being able to actually gain expertise into how to do surgery and prevent infections and such. Playing as a doctor appeals to me. -
Survivor Getting Tired After a 'Long Day'?
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to GanjaPalooza's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like a bug to me. Or maybe you got sick somehow and that did it, although those are some pretty odd symptoms for an illness. -
Patch #2 Incomming - What do you want to see?
SalamanderAnder (DayZ) replied to knawx's topic in General Discussion
1: Fixes to any known bugs you have, obviously. 2: More accurate status indicators to nourishment levels. This can be done however you want, just figure it out. Personally, I'd just like to see the old hud placed in the inventory screen next to the character. It would be kind of nostalgic, while still being off screen during gameplay. At least we'd be able to check it at will. 3: Water purification tablets. No matter how many "tablets" I have, it uses all of them when I purify a bottle of water. This is very annoying. I want more than one use out of those things. 4: The ability to combine medical items like pills. It's frustrating when I find myself carrying two bottles of vitamins that have barely anything in them, or one pack of antibiotics with 11 pills and one pack with 1 pill. Why can't I combine those things? 5: Better implementation of the "hands" box. You can right click an item and select "take into hands," but you can't just drag an item from the vicinity into your hands box. 6: Hot bar keys need to respond better. I find I have to press every hot key twice. That is annoying. 7: Animation smoothing for certain tasks would be nice. Switching weapons while moving, for example. Or walking while taking a drink. I don't know how much work that entails, but it looks like it was slightly improved in the last patch. 8: Gas lanterns work without a gas canister. Seems like a quick fix. 9: Eating and drinking should leave behind waste objects, like in the mod. I like tracking players that way. And finally, please include configurations for crafting, cooking, animals and gutting, as quickly as possible. It's a major chunk of the game and it would make the experience feel much more rewarding. I just want to cook a can of beans or a steak and have a nice, hot meal. It would also be cool if eating cooked food improved the state of your character. Also zombies.
