  1. Theres a lot of talk about how overpowered the L85A2 is along with lots of gripes about NVs advantage over those without them. I thought I might weigh in with my own ideas. First of all, I think the AWS ought to be separated from the L85A2 rifle altogether. Instead, make non-zooming infra red binocs an in game item. Note that these are binocs and not goggles that you can flip down and use as you run. You can stop for a moment to detect threats and targets with the clarity of the AWS but firing at them would have to be done the old fashioned way. They should fit into the standard binocular slot on the left of the inventory, this means that being able to detect the enemy with ease comes at the price of the view distance that the binocs/rangefinders provide. Secondly, I would nerf the view distance of the NV goggles. A simple increase of the gamma means that using NV doesn't approximate fighting in the daytime for some players while others are bathed in darkness. The NV should allow a player to make their way around an area and avoid zeds along with an obvious advantage to CQC. Other players should be easy to see no more than 150m away. Thirdly, I would like to add something which is a slight departure from real life NV and Infra-red, the military that developed them would have dealt with this problem ages ago but it would balance the use of them well in game. Both scopes use illuminated display screens, why not let a little light bleed out from the edges of the scope? I'm not talking Sam Fisher style NV, that would be stupid: How about just a mild glow around the head of the user, like an extremely weak chemlight? Just enough to pick them out if you look hard enough for them. This would make using your Infra-Red or NV less of a no brainer and more of a tactical choice. If the enemy is busying themselves doing something else you would easily get the drop on them. If they are dilligently checking for glowing lights in the distance they might just see you coming if they look hard enough. Green for NV, Red for Infra-red would be the obvious choice. What do you reckon?

    Ability to Combine Partial Magazines

I made a thread about reducing ammo that wasn't too well received (as the poll shows). http://dayzmod.com/f...2148-ammo-poll/ One great thing that came out of it was Kayakinack coming up with the idea of limiting the available ammo, not by the amount of ammo that you find but the number of magazines that you have to load up with bullets. Imagine that when you recover a rifle it has a single full magazine. Then, as you progress through your story you find more ammo in the form of small quantities of bullets that you have to manually load into the magazine that you originally found. You could have a pack which is filled with bullets but the means to fire them all at once is limited. Reloading could take upwards of ten seconds, not an option in a protracted firefight. Finding a second magazine could mean needing to find another weapon of the same kind or a loot spot that drops them. One man armies are not guys with great guns and lots of ammo but guys with great guns and spare, fully loaded magazines. The ability to simply slap in another full magazine becoming a luxury that many don't have.

    Helicopter Ropes

You have a parachute if you want to do that. Also you can get in without the heli landing as long as it hovers low enough.

    Why break what wasn't broken?

The respawn button was removed because it created large server loads by people spamming it to get to good locations. The waiting for character to create and overly long loading text? That was in no small part because of people respawning. You are a survivor anyway, you dont have a choice of where you begin your story. Kamenka has a trail of six deer stands to loot in relative safety, what makes you think it's a shit place?
  5. A good effort but, as was mentioned before, the what you hate about Day-Z question should be multiple choice. Also, the do you tend to play in groups? question is loaded. It should read: Do you tend to play in groups? -Nope, I'm a lone wolf -I sometimes play with buddies -I sometimes team up with strangers -I always play in a group There was no option for sometimes playing with buddies.

    Ammo Poll

It seems like the most intuitive way to limit KOS is not by reducing the availability of weapons but by dramatically reducing the amount of ammo available for them. Chris Rock said it best: Of course, this is already applied to many of the rare weapons in the game like the AS50 and the FAL, this means that tough decisions are often made between having an excellent rifle but not having the ammo to use it. I would like to see this applied to the mid tier weapons as well. Perhaps the addition of magazines that are only partially full or not dropping ammo with the weapon spawn would be a good idea, leaving a player with the need to go searching for ammo before he can start killing. Personally, I like the idea of players having to weigh up their options more before opening fire on other players and zeds.

The deer stands were super effective. Move on.

    Caltrops.

Caltrops are for vehicles aren't they? If so, fuck yeah! A single use patch of caltrops could be deployed on the land or road and used for hijacks, taking out all wheels at once. The obvious drawback being that the bandits would need to find four wheels to recover the vehicle. Caltrops wouldn't work on Zeds would they? Since they don't seem to be averse to pain (they don't falter or retreat when they've been shot) some tiny spikes in the ground wouldn't cause enough physical damage to stop them from walking. Players on the other hand? Caltrops could force a player to walk gingerly over the areas to avoid them, sprinting over them could cause you to prone and not be able to stand until bandaging your feet. Great for preventing enemies from attacking your base or rushing your position.

    how can i

I recommend finding a server with public teamspeak or side channel enabled (more likely would be team speak). Lots of players are there looking to team up for raids, recoveries and repairs. I met a squad through that. Just be wary of who you are meeting and where. Bring a friend. Tell your parents. Beware of windowless UAZs.
  11. I thought it would be interesting to take a general poll on what they would like the weapon scheme to be. I see two different ways that Day-Z could go on this: There are games out there that have a very limited and therefore highly specialized weapon scheme, like Half Life 2. Each weapon performs a specific role: Crowbar: Melee Pistol: Light sidearm Magnum: Heavy sidearm Crossbow: Long Range sniper SMG: Light Assault Pulse: Heavy Assault Shotgun: Short ranged heavy damage Having very specialised but limited number of weapons meant that their introduction was meaningful. When father Grigori throws you the shotgun in Ravenholm it makes you a much more efficient zombie killer. Just prior to fighting the combine soldiers at shorepoint base you pick up the pulse rifle, saving you from pumping entire magazines of SMG ammo into them. Weapons are upgrades but they also change your playstyle. The problem is that there is little scope for using a weapon in an interesting way. The antithesis to this would be the weapon scheme of Borderlands, with over 17,750,000 different ones in game. The earlier weapons balance advantages (power, Rate of fire, range) with disadvantages (reload time, recoil, range). As the game progresses, the disadvantages become less apparent. A ranged weapon with high power or a shotgun with a good rate of fire for instance. The problem here is that with the shere number of weapons the difference between one another become negligable. The thrill of a new weapon becomes a chore, not to mention a scrolling fest, trying to compare them properly. Of course, there are already more weapons in Day-Z than there were in HL2 and they are based on real world weapons so a procedurally generated weapon scheme is out of the question. But the question still remains of what kind of weapon scheme Day-Z should have. A large number of weapons means being able to tailor your weapon choice exactly to your playstyle instead of considering a new weapon a simple upgrade. Someone might favour a weapon because they know it well, not plan on holding on to it until they get an AS50, L85A2 or FAL, the "endgame" weapons. The problem with this would be that finding a new weapon would have less importance because the differences are more subtle. A small number of weapons would mean a more class based playstyle with an obvious progression your weapon upgrades but limited scope to find a weapon that suits you perfectly. Have at it!

    General Weapon Poll

It's pretty easy to qualify why they are there. They are secure buildings that were used as a base of operations in the major cities by the military.

    Ammo Poll

I love the idea of finding individual bullets and loading them into a limited number of magazines manually. It would be cool to have to duck under cover to get your remaining rounds into a mag, ready to be fired. It would be very fiddly though, the mechanic would need some finesse.

    General Weapon Poll

Try duct taping a scope onto a rifle that it wasn't intended for IRL. It would be absolutely useless.
  16. I play an open, non-hive server exclusively now. Along with the rigid no-hack policy, side chat enabled and a public TS channel it's just nicer to play on a server that feels like home. There are people I collaborate with, fight against, steal from. There is an ebb and flow to how the different factions are doing along with a steady stream of less accomplished players that hop in for a quick game, some stay for good. I would hate to see non-hive servers that do a good job and run a clean server banned.

DayZ as a stand alone game?

You can see that the logic here is incontrovertable. So you're complaining that you might be charged twice for something that you weren't charged for the first time.

Prevent Spawn Point "Choosing" by Suicide

It's certainly a good compromise for gameplay, Zed. But the other reason respawn is being disabled is because of the increased server load due to character creation. People's lack of patience is fucking up the servers for everyone else; That's why the waiting for character to create screen takes ages for some and that's the reason why respawn is no longer going to be spammable.
  21. I took a look around for a thread like this but either it never existed or it was lost to forum traffic long ago. I thought it would be fun to share the music that reminds you of Day-Z. Here's two to begin: Lyrics about teamwork and mutual distrust from Rocket's fellow Kiwis. The Remnants- Bad Taste (OST) Aesop Rock tells a story of a paratrooper that becomes injured by a malfunctioning 'chute, becomes disoriented and embarks on a frantic killing spree, not knowing who is the enemy or what his objective is. Chorus: "I have landed safely. I have not received my papers. I have zero natural enemies. I don't know my location. I have no training in reconnaissance, combat or colluding. I'm calling for my orders, over. 'Strap on a helmet and start shooting.'"
  22. A skilled lone wolf couldn't retrieve the container from the docks. But could he take out one driver and his passenger as they transport it to the site of their base? Taking out a chopper is a much tougher task though. Perhaps the chopper would have a limited altitude and speed due to the extra weight of the container? Hearing the siren of the dock crane would be a signal for rival factions to ready roadblocks and ambush points as the truck/heli team expends their ammo and bloodpacks on waves of zeds.

    Dynamic deer stands

I'm on board with the OP's idea. I do a lot of looting deer stands before heading North, I'm sure lots of other players do because it's a relatively risk free means to pick up a decent weapon or high end supplies. I get into the habit of a certain route like heading to the three deer stands North of Kamenka, then east to the barn there, then North to the deer stands just South of Bor. It's predictable and normally gives decent loot but it's boring as well. Dynamic deer stands give the player another chance to read the land for their location (three military/police zombies milling around by a tree line). Also, dynamic deer stands change from being a source of loot to a possible sniper location; It attracts players to them as much as it provides cover for an easy PvP kill. The sacrifice of realism is negligable. Deer stands are flimsy structures, many are even built to be portable. They would change location on server restart as opposed to despawning and respawning while the server is running.

    Snow

footprints that mark your path a little too well. Blood in the snow to track injured players? Walking in a straight line to hide your numbers? Players sticking out like a sore thumb in snow? HDR effects of snowblindness? Actually bothering to use heatpacks? Hell Yes!

    Headlamps

Excellent idea. Not only would they leave your hands free to wield a weapon, tying the direction you shine your torch to the direction you are looking as opposed to facing just makes more sense. I think they should be semi-rare drops in industrial areas.
