Why is a helicopter an ambient sound?

When walking around, I sometimes hear a helicopter flying by. There is no helicopter, but the sound of one plays. Anyone know why this happens? When it happens at night, all I can think of is -

Now that I think about it, it would also be one of the best secondaries, if you're stealthy enough. You could clear out cities with the knife if you approach zombies carefully. -
