Isn't item permanence counterintuitive to permadeath?

I never asked for tents. Tents were never in my favor, even in the mod. -
Isn't item permanence counterintuitive to permadeath?
omgwtfbbq (DayZ) replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I played the mod. I still didn't like the tents then. DayZ strives for realism, so why can I die, then get stuff from a now dead version of me? With tents, DayZ doesn't involve death so much as it has reincarnation. Death should mean permadeath. One of the big points of DayZ is that when you die, you're permanently dead. There is no true compromise to having tents with permadeath other than giving items player IDs that expire on death. Because this is difficult/impossible, the solution is to not have tents. However, I am in the minority on the strive for realism over fun. Sure it isn't fun to suffer from starvation desperately looking for food in a wasteland, but it gives tension...atmosphere...immersion, any you'd like. Yes, it's more fun to go back to Elektro firefights without the two hour gearing time, but as mentioned endlessly, DayZ is supposed to be an "anti-game", take that for what you will. It doesn't play by conventional video game rules, so it's questionable when they introduce them. -

Persistent storage wouldn't be as bad as it is if people were locked to one server, but then there's the "well what if the server is down/lagging" argument again. In other words, persistent storage should not exist. -

There is so much broken English in this thread I can't understand most of it

Well I'm a teenager, I'm not clueless, and I usually play on hardcore servers because I don't like people being able to see me over walls. I'd play regular mode more if they did the thing where things you can't see in first person are invisible in third. And as a follow up point, someone said earlier in the thread that it's because the only difference between hardcore and regular servers is the camera angle. However, I'm with you on the fact that the one difference completely changes how people play the game. For now, I'm fine with the name change. Maybe this will confuse people into playing first-person servers more.

This is them acknowledging that everyone on regular servers plays in third person.

As with most of my posts, the point of the thread is to think. Please, dev team, please don't include paid DLC. Please be the shining example of a game that can survive early access development, then be released in full with no additional paid add-ons. No DLC. Full game for $30 (or however much they plan to sell it for). What I don't want to see: -DLC maps for $9.99 USD -Clothing/player items (see below for my point on this) for only $.99! -Perks/player benefits only available through microtransactions -Anything else stupid I can't think of right now. With the clothing point above, yes, I know "The WarZ" or "Infestation: Survivor Stories" or whatever generic name they go by now has tried this, and received a bunch of crap for it. At least, from the audience. Did the DayZ dev team swear that they wouldn't do these kind of things? No. Is it presumed they won't or don't want to? Maybe. I am not stating that they will or won't, I'm just saying it's unclear unless one of the dev team says officially that they will/won't. The reason I bring this up at all is because the dev team on DayZ actually listens to what the community surrounding it wants, more or less. If they didn't, there wouldn't be a Suggestions sub-forum dedicated to having users voice their thoughts on future additions to development. We have heard no statement on whether or not these will be included, as this is a matter to be decided in a year or two, near the end of development. I bring this up to know if I should continue to support DayZ and its development choices. For now, I can even see the possible response to this being that they simply do not know; it being a matter too far forward into the future to determine, whether it be because of financial benefit or something the dev team just decides on. For some reason, and without any proof or verification to back it, I believe the dev team won't include these. Why? I don't know. All I can do is make posts like this and cross my fingers, and that's about it. So dev team, as a lover of this game so dearly, Please don't include paid DLC or paid add-ons. EDIT: This first comment made me immediately sad

Is DayZ going to have microtransactions/DLC?

The problem: Having lower quality textures is literally sectioning off a part of the game until you fork over some money. That would be like if you bought Crysis 3, except it looks like Half-Life 2 until you pay an extra $10 for HD-textures. -

I'd love to see a tank with a nonfunctional cannon, because we play as the average Joe/Mary and they wouldn't know how to fix a tank cannon. How would they fix a tank? I don't know, but it'd be fun to be able to drive a giant metal box with treads with no offensive capabilities. -

omgwtfbbq (DayZ) replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Paying for higher quality textures isn't the best marketing strategy in my mind; why not just patch it in? Your point about paying for a map is the exact opposite of what I was saying in the original post; that's exactly what I don't want to have happen, having to pay for content that should be included. Why should it be included? If there is an additional map for sale, you get exactly 1/2 of all the maps in the game unless you pay extra money. -

Who thinks equipment deterioration is too fast?
omgwtfbbq (DayZ) replied to a topic in General Discussion
Then why not worn? The damage system is flawed because it doesn't make sense for every item. Some it does, example clothes or weapons, but in the case of food or melee weapons, I fail to see how a crowbar can be ruined -

The problem is that I can only sharpen my axe when it's ruined or badly damaged, and it'll only go up to damaged. Why can't I just repeat the action over and over until it's pristine? -

Hey, another endgame thread complaining about the lack of things to do in a game where the entire goal is to not die. It's not like there's another one of these or these or these or these or these or these or these EDIT: Or these or these or these -
100 man servers seem silly to me, there's already a lot of people (in high traffic areas), and the feeling of isolation and survival in the apocalypse is lost if I can have an army of 75 people running with me.

It took me four hours to catch one fish, and the server reset before I could pick it up
omgwtfbbq (DayZ) posted a topic in General Discussion
AND IT WAS INCREDIBLE. People are always complaining about how there's nothing to do in DayZ other than survive (even though that is the entire point of the game). A handful are always complaining about the lack of an "endgame" and how the game needs one and they'll stop playing because they're bored...but the implementation of fishing is exactly the kind of thing DayZ needs more of. Instead of the linear path most people take when playing DayZ of "run to place with loot, get loot, maybe shoot one or two people then complain on the forums about not having enough things to do", lately I've been having fun with not even bothering to determine what city I'm in, picking a random road and following it until I hit another town, then repeat. The stress of trying to think of what to do when I get all the gear I need is gone, because I'm not looking for anything in specific. I just travel relatively aimlessly, and I pick up whatever I find along the way. And then I found a fishing hook. The legendary item. Just as rare, if not more rare than a canopener. I had never fished before. I now had a mission. This is the exact mindset I should have when playing DayZ. I should fixate on one goal that won't necessarily make the game instantly easier, but takes time to achieve a small, situational reward that is beneficial in the long run. In other words, something to do that I don't have to do, and will make me want to play more when I achieve the goal rather than go on the forums and complain about not having anything to do and starting another thread called "dayz endgame". STORY FOR THOSE INTERESTED, OTHERWISE, THE PART ABOVE THIS IS MY POINT: The first thing I needed was a stick. Not just any stick, a very specific type of stick (for some reason). An ashwood stick. From ashwood trees. Thankfully, by this time, I already had a firefighter axe on me, so there was no need to go hunting for one. However, I didn't know exactly what ashwood trees looked like (because I try not to Google answers to things like this because I'm so fucking hardcore), so after chopping the shit out of some random forest trees, I realized my axe was damaged. Now I needed a pickaxe to mine some rocks to sharpen my axe. After an hour, I found one. So after resharpening my axe which can only be sharpened once at a very specific interval of badly damaged condition and no higher, nor can I repeat the action to get a better condition, I went to find the sought-after tree. Finally, after another 45 minutes or so, I found the tree. With a sigh of relief, I felled the fifteen-foot majesty which yielded one stick. The perfect fishing pole. With no more inventory space, I grabbed the stick in my hand, tried attaching the fishing hook, then found this physically impossible, likely due to the possibility of crossing an event horizon of some sort. Server reset. I stopped for the day, then found later while talking to my friend that I needed to have worms on the hook before attaching it to the pole, and worms can only be dug up using a hoe or shovel. With the newly gained knowledge that my in-game character has a crippling case of ADHD and is incapable of digging with their fucking hands, I spent another hour and a half sifting through sheds full of hats, looking for a shovel or hoe. I eventually found a hoe, and then had the realization that I required four melee items to get to this point. (Axe for trees, pickaxe for repairing axe, fishing pole for fishing pole purposes, and a hoe for worms) I joyously threw my fishing pole at the nearest zombie, who proceeded to begin eating my shins. After shooting their face, I picked up the hoe, dug up twelve worms which had to be carefully divided into sets of four, rather than eat a can of food and use the empty can to hold like thirty worms, then combined the worms with the fishing hook. I meant to throw the hoe at the same zombie's face, but it had disappeared so the nearest wall had to suffice. I picked up the fishing pole, combined the fishing hook with bait and the pole, and paused. Three and a half hours led up to this moment. I held my creation over my head against the wind, then had to immediately drop it because another zombie decided to start eating my ass. Once dispatched, I grabbed my fishing pole, then ended up running for another half an hour before I found a puny pool of water that was more reminiscent of rain accumulate than a pond or river. Either way, I could fish in it. Thirty seconds later, I sucessfully pulled in a fish. Opening my inventory, the fresh fish sat on the ground in all of its glory, and as I made space in my inventory, and dragged it into my backpack, the message No message received for 10 seconds appeared. Well, shit. TL;DR Try fishing. (I didn't get the fish. Or the food I put on the ground to make space for the fish.)- 16 replies

Like I mentioned in the story, it's a bit ridiculous how I had to find an axe to completely cut down the very specific tree I needed. Even when cut down, the tree gave me one stick, not three hundred.
